Estudos de freqüência, morfologia e diagnóstico de Entamoeba gingivalis, Gros, 1849

Realizamos estudos de freqüência de Entamoeba gingivalis entre 100 pacientes atendidos nos ambulatórios odontológicos da Ufiiversidade Federal de Uberlândia (UFU), utilizando-se esfregaços corados pela técnica de Papanicolaou modificado, revelando um expressivo índice de 62% de positividade. A afinidade do corante pelo conteúdo vacuolarfagocítico impede uma nítida visualização das cromatinas central e periférica do núcleo do parasita. Lavados bucais de outros 10 pacientes foram utilizados para avaliar em qual método parasitológico de diagnóstico (a fresco e em coloração por hematoxilina férrica, Giemsa e Papanicolaou) ocorre melhor visualização do parasita. O exame afresco do sedimento do lavado bucal revelou 100% de positividade e nítida visualização do parasita. Nenhuma técnica de coloração dos esfregaços se mostrou adequada, apresentando o núcleo freqüentemente mascarado pelos vacúolos fagocíticos. Em preparações coradas por azul de toluidina e na microscopia eletrônica de transmissão pode-se observar caracteres morfológicos típicos do protozoário.

First record on Loxosceles laeta (Nicolet, 1849) (Araneae, Sicariidae) in the West Zone of São Paulo City, São Paulo, Brazil, and considerations regarding its geographic distribution

Loxosceles laeta spiders were captured in the West zone of São Paulo City, this being the first record of the specie in this area. Since loxoscelism is an important public health problem in the South region of Brazil, it is necessary to investigate the presence of this spider in São Paulo City.

Primeiro registro sinantrópico de Loxosceles laeta (Nicolet, 1849) (Araneae, Sicariidae) no Município do Rio de Janeiro, Estado do Rio de Janeiro

Loxosceles laeta é a espécie de aranha-marrom de maior importância médica, causando acidentes de maior gravidade, além de apresentar hábito sinantrópico. No presente trabalho, é apresentado o primeiro registro sinantrópico de Loxosceles laeta no Município do Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brasil, a partir de encontro e coleta ocasional de espécimes, no período de agosto de 2005 a junho de 2009. A espécie foi registrada em um prédio do Museu Nacional/UFRJ, localizado no parque da Quinta da Boa Vista, área urbana na Zona Norte da Cidade do Rio de Janeiro. O foco foi considerado localizado e restrito. Loxosceles laeta é adaptável às condições climáticas da região metropolitana do Rio de Janeiro, o que torna possível o estabelecimento de novos focos da espécie e a ocorrência de loxoscelismo na região.

Owner portraits and heraldry in the "Lamoignon Hours"

Because of the distance in time and the lack of testifying documents, one should be extremely careful when labelling portraits in medieval books of hours as donor portraits or owner portraits. There are, however, manuscripts that reveal their first owner within their decorative programme, and the Lamoignon Hours (Lisbon, Gulbenkian, ms LA 237) is one of these. This article aims to discuss the iconography of the three portraits found on f.165v, f.202v and f.286v, as well as the relevance of portraiture and heraldic insignia in books of hours and the significance of such content to the original owner and to those who possessed the book afterwards.

The morphology of the foregut of larvae and postlarva of Sesarma curacaoense De Man, 1892: a species with facultative lecithotrophy during larval development

Previous study on the resistance of larvae of Sesarma curacaoense submitted to starvation has revealed a facultative lecithotrophy during zoeal stages, but megalopa and first juvenile stages are exclusively feeding stages. In the present study, the gross morphology and fine structure of the foregut of S. curacaoense were investigated during larval, megalopa and first juvenile stages. The foregut of the zoea I show specific setae and a filter press apparently functional. The foregut undergoes changes in the zoea II (last larval stage) with increment of setae number, mainly on the cardiopyloric valve and complexity of the filter press. After metamorphosis to megalopa stage the foregut become rather complex, with a gastric mill supporting a medial and two lateral teeth well-developed. The foregut of the first juvenile is more specialized compared to the previous stage, showing similar characteristics of the decapod adults. These results provide further evidence of facultative lecithotrophic development in the larvae of S. curacaoense.
