History has shown that projects move in and out of poor status through the life of the project. Predicting the success or failure of a project to complete on time because of its recent history on the contract status report could provide our project managers another tool for monitoring contract progress. In many instances, poor contract progress results in the loss of contract time and late completion of projects. This research evaluates the combinations of work type, point in time physical work begins, recent poor status, and contract bid amount as indicators of late project completion.

Les méthodes de design et de construction des routes développés dans le sud canadien ont maintenant besoin d’être adaptés aux environnements nordiques du pays afin de prévenir le dégel dramatique du pergélisol lors de la construction d’une nouvelle route. De plus, le réchauffement climatique occasionne présentement d’importants problèmes de stabilité des sols dans le nord canadien. Ces facteurs causent des pertes importantes au niveau des capacités fonctionnelles et structurales de l’Alaska Highway au Yukon sur un segment de plus de 200 km situé entre le village de Destruction Bay et la frontière de l’Alaska. Afin de trouver des solutions rentables à long terme, le ministère du transport du Yukon (en collaboration avec le Federal Highway Administration du gouvernement américain, Transports Canada, l’Université Laval, l’Université de Montréal et l’Alaska University transportation Center) a mis en place 12 sections d’essais de 50 mètres de longueur sur l’autoroute de l’Alaska près de Beaver Creek en 2008. Ces différentes sections d’essais ont été conçues pour évaluer une ou plusieurs méthodes combinées de stabilisation thermique telles que le drain thermique, le remblai à convection d’air, le pare-neige / pare-soleil, le remblai couvert de matières organiques, les drains longitudinaux, le déblaiement de la neige sur les pentes et la surface réfléchissante. Les objectifs spécifiques de la recherche sont 1) d’établir les régimes thermiques et les flux de chaleur dans chacune des sections pour les 3 premières années de fonctionnement ; 2) de documenter les facteurs pouvant favoriser ou nuire à l’efficacité des systèmes de protection et ; 3) de déterminer le rapport coûts/bénéfices à long terme pour chacune des techniques utilisées. Pour ce faire, une nouvelle méthode d’analyse, basée sur la mesure de flux d’extraction de chaleur Hx et d’induction Hi à l’interface entre le remblai et le sol naturel, a été utilisée dans cette étude. Certaines techniques de protection du pergélisol démontrent un bon potentiel durant leurs 3 premières années de fonctionnement. C’est le cas pour le remblai à convection d’air non-couvert, le remblai à convection d’air pleine largeur, les drains longitudinaux, le pare-soleil / pare-neige et la surface réfléchissante. Malheureusement, des problèmes dans l’installation des drains thermiques ont empêché une évaluation complète de leur efficacité.

RESUMEN El dolor dorso lumbar es un síntoma que afecta a gran cantidad de personas y población trabajadora en el mundo y comprende un importante problema de salud. La prevalencia de dolor de espalda baja en población trabajadora se estima en un 60% a un 85%, mientras que la prevalencia anual en la población general varía entre un 15% al 45%. La incidencia anual de dolor de espalda en la población general se estima entre 10% y 15%. Objetivo Determinar la prevalencia de síntomas musculoesqueléticos de la región dorso lumbar y los hábitos de vida de trabajadores en una empresa de construcción en la ciudad de Bogotá. Metodología Se realizó un estudio de corte transversal. Se analizaron datos secundarios procedentes de una base de datos de una empresa de construcción ubicada en la ciudad de Bogotá, con 282 trabajadores. Se incluyeron variables sociodemográficas, laborales, hábitos de vida y síntomas musculoesqueléticos. Se hizo un análisis descriptivo considerando las medidas de tendencia central para las variables cuantitativas y distribución de frecuencias para variables cualitativas. Resultados Se incluyeron a 282 trabajadores con un promedio de edad de 33.4 años (DE=10.2). El 93% correspondió al sexo masculino. La prevalencia de síntomas musculoesqueléticos en región dorsal fue de 26% y región lumbar 31.2%. La mayoría de trabajadores se encuentra en el área operativa con un 87,9% en la tercera década de la vida y con un tiempo en la empresa de 11 a 18 años (42.8%). Otros factores que se asociaron con la presencia de síntomas en la región dorsolumbar fueron: realizar oficios domésticos, el sedentarismo y dormir menos de 6 horas. Conclusiones Los síntomas musculoesqueléticos derivados de la actividad laboral en la construcción constituyen un problema significativo influenciado por los factores de riesgo relacionados con el trabajo, las características sociodemográficas y hábitos de vida que pueden jugar un papel fundamental para la aparición de sintomatología. Por lo tanto, se requiere que los trabajadores sean incluidos en programas de vigilancia epidemiológica, con el fin de establecer acciones de prevención que permitan disminuir la aparición de dichos síntomas.

Objetivo: Establecer la relación entre la percepción de seguridad con los factores ocupacionales y socio demográficos de los trabajadores pertenecientes a 11 clínicas odontológicos particulares en Bogotá. Materiales y métodos: Estudio de corte transversal en población de trabajadores pertenecientes a clínicas odontológicas particulares de Bogotá (Colombia). La muestra incluyó 105 odontólogos y 107 auxiliares pertenecientes a 11 clínicas odontológicas privadas en Bogotá que cumplieron con los criterios de selección. Se incluyeron variables ocupacionales y socio demográficas y las relacionadas con el sistema de seguridad y salud en el trabajo. Se aplicó el “Cuestionario Nórdico Sobre Seguridad en el Trabajo. Para los factores socio-demográficos de la población estudiada, se utilizó estadística descriptiva, medidas de frecuencia absoluta y porcentual, las variables cuantitativas se describieron con medidas de tendencia central y de dispersión; para la asociación de las variables cualitativas con el tipo de percepción se usó la prueba Ji Cuadrado de Pearson o el test exacto de Fisher para valores esperados menores de 5. Resultados: Las dimensiones con mejor percepción fueron las relacionadas con la confianza en la eficacia de los sistemas de seguridad (D7 3.35±0.43) y la Administración de justicia de seguridad (D3 3.1±0.55). Las dimensiones que evalúan la Gestión de empoderamiento de seguridad (D2 2.74±0.99) y la prioridad de los trabajadores con la seguridad (D5 2.64±0.54) tuvieron la menor percepción. La percepción de seguridad fue buena en general teniendo en cuenta que el promedio de todas las dimensiones fue superior a 2.5; percepción mayor significativamente en los hombres (3.78±0.38), odontólogos (3.89±0.38) y personal que tienen o han tenido pareja (3.83±0.4). Las personas con más trabajos adicionales (4.07±0.17), mayor nivel educativo (3.89±0.31), mayor antigüedad laboral (3.92±0.51) y trabajadores mayores de 30 años (3.89±0.35), mostraron mejor percepción de seguridad. En el análisis multivariado los factores cargo y antigüedad laboral encontraron asociación en las dimensiones 2, 4 y 6 (p<0.001), mientras que para las variables numéricas, las dimensiones 1, 3, 4 y 6 tuvieron asociación significativa las variables género y posición (p<0.001). Conclusiones: La percepción de seguridad en las siete dimensiones se relacionó con el género, edad, estado civil, nivel educativo, cargo, posición y antigüedad laboral. No se encontraron diferencias significativas por turno de trabajo o clínica.

Health issues such as cardiovascular disease are often due to dietary habits. Thus, meat industry needs to reduce salt in their products. However, production of low-salt content dry-cured not affected. The current study evaluated the effect of salt reduction from 6% to 3% in two Portuguese traditional blood dry-cured sausages. Physicochemical and microbiological parameters, biogenic amines content, fatty acids profile, texture profile analyses and sensory panel evaluations were considered. Differences due to salt reduction were noticeable in a faint increase in water activity, which slightly favoured microbial growth, with the highest yeasts numbers found in 6% salt sausages. Total biogenic amines content ranged from 224.72 to 1302.81 mg kg-1 dry matter, with higher amounts, particularly of cadaverine, histamine and tyramine, in low-salt products. Still, histamine significant differences were observed due to salt content. However, texture profile analysis revealed that low-salt products showed lower resilience and cohesiveness, even though no textural changes were observed by the panellists. Nevertheless, low-salt sausages were clearly preferred. Still, taking the safety of these traditional meat products into account, the results obtained for pH, aw and biogenic amines, have shown that a reduction in salt content should be accompanied by complementary safety measures, such as the use of starter cultures to minimise microbiological and chemical risks.

Our cities are constantly evolving, and the necessity to improve the condition and safety of the urban infrastructures is fundamental. However, on the roads, the specific needs of cyclists and pedestrians are often neglected. The Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs), among whom cyclists and pedestrians are, rarely benefit from the most innovative safety measures. Inspired by playgrounds and aiming to reduce VRUs injuries, the Impact-Absorbing Pavements (IAP) developed as novel sidewalks, and bike lanes surface layers may help decrease injuries, fatalities, and the related societal costs. To achieve this goal, the End-of-Life Tyres (ELTs) crumb rubber (CR) is used as a primary resource, bringing its elastic properties into the surface layer. The thesis is divided into five main chapters. The first concerns the formulation and the definition of a feasible mix. The second explores the mechanical and environmental properties in detail, and the ageing effect is also assessed. The third describes the modelling of the material to simulate accidents and measure the injury reduction, especially on the head. The fourth chapter is reserved for the field trial. The last gives some perspectives on the research and proposes a way to optimize and improve the data and results collected during the doctoral research. It was observed that the specimens made with cold protocol have noticeable performances and reduce the overall carbon footprint impact of this material. The material modelling and the accident simulation proved the performance of the IAP against head injuries, and the field trial confirmed the good results obtained in the laboratory for the cold-made material. Finally, the outcomes of this thesis opened many prospective to the IAP development, such as the use of a plant-based binder or recycled aggregates and gave a positive prospect of an innovative material to the urban road infrastructures.

This paper features a tool to carry out environmental performance evaluation in highway rehabilitation works, as a component of environmental supervision activities. The procedure involves (i) evidence gathering by conducting technical inspections and reviewing environmental compliance reports, (ii) ranking nonconformities according to a proposed weighting framework, and (iii) calculation of an environmental conformity index. For the sake of testing and calibration, the procedure was applied to five road segments that were submitted to rehabilitation works in Sao Paulo State and the results were treated qualitatively.

Objectives: To document and describe the effects of woodstove burns in children. To identify how these accidents occur so that a prevention strategy can be devised. Design, Patients and Setting: Retrospective departmental database and case note review of all children with woodstove burns seen at the Burns Unit of a Tertiary Referral Children's Hospital between January 1997 and September 2001. Main outcome measures: Number and ages of children burned: circumstances of the accidents; injuries-sustained, treatment-required and long-term sequelae. Results. Eleven children, median age 1.0 year, sustained burns, usually to the hands, of varying thickness. Two children required skin grafting and five required scar therapy. Seven children intentionally placed their hands onto the Outside of the stove. In all children, burns occurred despite adult supervision Conclusions: Woodstoves area cause of burns in children. These injuries are associated with significant morbidity and financial costs. Through public education, woodstove burns can easily be prevented utilising simple safety measures. Background: Several studies have shown that variation in serum gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) in the population is associated with risk of death or development of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, or hypertension. This association is only partly explained by associations between GGT and recognized risk factors. Our aim was to estimate the relative importance of genetic and environmental sources of variation in GGT as well as genetic and environmental sources of covariation between GGT and other liver enzymes and markers of cardiovascular risk in adult twin pairs. Methods: We recruited 1134 men and 2241 women through the Australian Twin Registry. Data were collected through mailed questionnaires, telephone interviews, and by analysis of blood samples. Sources of variation in GGT, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and of covariation between GGT and cardiovascular risk factors were assessed by maximum-likelihood model-fitting. Results: Serum GGT, ALT, and AST were affected by additive genetic and nonshared environmental factors, with heritabilities estimated at 0.52, 0.48, and 0.32, respectively. One-half of the genetic variance in GGT was shared with ALT, AST, or both. There were highly significant correlations between GGT and body mass index; serum lipids, lipoproteins, glucose, and insulin; and blood pressure. These correlations were more attributable to genes that affect both GGT and known cardiovascular risk factors than to environmental factors. Conclusions: Variation in serum enzymes that reflect liver function showed significant genetic effects, and there was evidence that both genetic and environmental factors that affect these enzymes can also affect cardiovascular risk. This paper concerns the study of biocides application in old timber structures of maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Ail.), previously impregnated with other products. A method was developed in laboratory to determine in situ the penetration depth of a product applied superficially. As initial treatment, three traditional products for sawn timber for buildings were used and, for new treatments, two newer, more environmentally benign products were used. Their ability to penetrate the pre-treated surfaces was evaluated after 1, 2 and 3 applications at 24 hours intervals and the results obtained are presented. Finally, the applicability of the developed test to the in-situ evaluation of timber structures is also discussed.

Environment monitoring has an important role in occupational exposure assessment. However, due to several factors is done with insufficient frequency and normally don´t give the necessary information to choose the most adequate safety measures to avoid or control exposure. Identifying all the tasks developed in each workplace and conducting a task-based exposure assessment help to refine the exposure characterization and reduce assessment errors. A task-based assessment can provide also a better evaluation of exposure variability, instead of assessing personal exposures using continuous 8-hour time weighted average measurements. Health effects related with exposure to particles have mainly been investigated with mass-measuring instruments or gravimetric analysis. However, more recently, there are some studies that support that size distribution and particle number concentration may have advantages over particle mass concentration for assessing the health effects of airborne particles. Several exposure assessments were performed in different occupational settings (bakery, grill house, cork industry and horse stable) and were applied these two resources: task-based exposure assessment and particle number concentration by size. The results showed interesting results: task-based approach applied permitted to identify the tasks with higher exposure to the smaller particles (0.3 μm) in the different occupational settings. The data obtained allow more concrete and effective risk assessment and the identification of priorities for safety investments.
