In this paper, we have prepared of a topography/chemical composition gradient polystyrene (PS) surface, i.e., an orthogonal gradient surface, to investigate the relationship between surface wettability and surface structure and chemical composition. The prepared surface shows a one-dimensional gradient in wettability in the x, y, and diagonal directions, including hydrophobic to hydrophilic, superhydrophobic to hydrophobic, superhydrophobic to superhydrophilic gradients, and so forth.

The valence of Pr and relationship between bond covalency and T-c in Y1-xPrxBa2Cu3O7 (x = 0-1) have been studied using complex chemical bond theory. The results indicate that the depression of superconductivity in Y1-xPrxBa2Cu3O7 can be reasonably explained by bond covalency difference for the bonds between CuO2 plane and CuO chain. T-c decreases with the decreasing of bond covalency difference and reaches zero when bond covalency difference is zero (or bond covalency in CuO2 exceeds that in CuO chain) at Pr concentration 0.55 and valence +3.30. These are in good agreement with the experiments and meanwhile suggest that the valence of Pr is + 3.30 in Y1-xPrxBa2Cu3O7. The results also indicate that for Pr valence less than +3.15, superconductivity always exists for whatever Pr concentration, whereas for Pr with a valence of +4.0, superconductivity disappears as soon as Pr concentration exceeds 0.19. This supports with the viewpoint that higher valence Pr will contribute more electrons to CuO2 plane, filling the mobile holes responsible for conduction. For PrBa2Cu3O7 with no Ba-site Pr, our calculation suggests that it will be a superconductor if the average valence of Pr is less than +3.15. (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. The viscoelastic behavior of phenolphthalein poly(ether ketone) (PEK-C) and its relationship to yielding was studied. The following phenomena were observed: (1) The relaxation behavior at strain near yield closely approximated that at low strain but near the T-g; (2) the temperature and strain rate dependence of yield stress could be modeled by the one-process Eyring theory and the value of the activation volume was the same as that of the glass transition; and (3) according to the Zhurkov-Bueche equation, the cu transition was related to the yield behavior. All these results indicated that the glass transition was the main factor that controlled the yield behavior. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

A series of samples having the composition of La2-xSrxNiO4(0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1) were prepared and used as catalysts for NH3 oxidation. It was found that the La and oxygen vacancies exist in the La2-xSrxNiO4-lambda(0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1). The unit cell volume decreases with the increase of x. For bath c and a parameters there appeared a turning point at x = 0.5. Doping with a lower valence cation Sr2+ in the case of La2NiO4 resulted in an increase of Ni3+, consequently the formation of oxygen vacancies, the increase of reducing ability and the increase of catalytic activity. In the oxygen TPD of La2-xSrxNiO4(0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1) appeared three peaks, the alpha' peak at about 400K was attributed to the surplus oxygen desorption, the a peak at 700K which approaches to a maxium at x = 0.6 was attributed to the oxygen adsorbed at oxygen vacancies. The beta peak at about 1000K which depends closely on the x and favors the catalytic activity was attributed to the reduction of Ni3+. The catalytic activity of La-2-x SrxNiO4 mixed oxides in the NH3 oxidation in general could be attributed to the extent of the redox reaction: 2Ni(2+) + O-2 + V-0(..) reversible arrow 2Ni(3+) + 20(-) where V-0(..) representes the oxygen vacancies and O- the oxygen species adsorbed at the vacancies.

In this paper, three topological indices A(m1), A(m2) and A(m3) have been applied to multivariate analysis in structure property relationship studies. The topological indices oi fourty-three asymmetrical phosphono bisazo derivatives of chromotropic acid have been calculated, The structure-property relationship between color reagents and contrast of color reactions with cerium has been studied by A, indices and structure selective factors, Good results have been obtained.

In this paper A, topological indices and molecular connectivity inidces have been applied to multivariate analysis in structure-property studies. The topological indices of twenty asymmetrical phosphone bisazo derivatives of chromotropic acid have been calculated. The structure-property relationships between color reagents and molar absorptivity of color reactions with ytterbium have been studied by A(m) indices and molecular connectivity indices. Good results have been obtained.

In the area of food and pharmacy cold storage, temperature distribution is considered as a key factor. Inappropriate distribution of temperature during the cooling process in cold rooms will cause the deterioration of the quality of products and therefore shorten their life-span. In practice, in order to maintain the distribution of temperature at an appropriate level, large amount of electrical energy has to be consumed to cool down the volume of space, based on the reading of a single temperature sensor placed in every cold room. However, it is not clear and visible that what is the change of energy consumption and temperature distribution over time. It lacks of effective tools to visualise such a phenomenon. In this poster, we initially present a solution which combines a visualisation tool with a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model together to enable users to explore such phenomenon.
