The thesis is divided in three chapters, each one covering one topic. Initially, the thermo-mechanical and impact properties of materials used for back protectors have been analysed. Dynamical mechanical analysis (DMTA) has shown that materials used for soft-shell protectors present frequency-sensitive properties. Furthermore, through impact tests, the shock absorbing characteristics of the materials have been investigated proving the differences between soft and hard-shell protectors; moreover it has been demonstrated that the materials used for soft-shell protectors maintain their protective properties after multi-impacts. The second chapter covers the effect of the visco-elastic properties of the thermoplastic polymers on the flexural and rebound behaviours of ski boots. DMTA analysis on the materials and flexural and rebound testing on the boots have been performed. A comparison of the results highlighted a correlation between the visco-elastic properties and the flexural and rebound behaviour of ski boots. The same experimental methods have been used to investigate the influence of the design on the flexural and rebound behaviours. Finally in the third chapter the thermoplastic materials employed for the construction of ski boots soles have been characterized in terms of chemical composition, hardness, crystallinity, surface roughness and coefficient of friction (COF). The results showed a relation between material hardness and grip, in particular softer materials provide more grip with respect to harder materials. On the contrary, the surface roughness has a negative effect on friction because of the decrease in contact area. The measure of grip on inclined wet surfaces showed again a relation between hardness and grip. The performance ranking of the different materials has been the same for the COF and for the slip angle tests, indicating that COF can be used as a parameter for the choice of the optimal material to be used for the soles of ski boots.

Eye injuries are a large societal problem in both the military and civilian sectors. Eye injury rates are increasing in recent military conflicts, and there are over 1.9 million eye injuries in the United States civilian sector annually. In order to develop a better understanding of eye injury risk, several previous studies have developed eye injury criteria based on projectile characteristics. While these injury criteria have been used to estimate eye injury potential of impact scenarios, they require that the mass, size and velocity of the projectile are known. It is desirable to develop a method to assess the severity of an eye impact in environments where it would be difficult or impossible to determine these projectile characteristics. The current study presents a measurement technique for monitoring intraocular pressure of the eye under impactloading. Through experimental tests with a custom pressure chamber, a subminiature pressure transducer was validated to be thermally stable and suitable for testing in an impact environment.Once validated, the transducer was utilized intraocularly, inserted through the optic nerve, to measure the pressure of the eye during blunt-projectile impacts. A total of 150 impact tests were performed using projectiles ranging from 3.2 mm to 17.5 mm in diameter. Investigation of the relationship between projectile energy and intraocular pressure lead to the identification of at least two distinct trends. Intraocular pressure and normalized energy measurements indicated a different response for penetrating-type globe rupture injuries with smaller diameter (d < 1 cm)projectiles, and blunt-type globe rupture injuries with larger diameter (d > 1 cm) projectiles. Furthermore, regression analysis indicates that relationships exist between intraocular pressureand projectile energy that may allow quantification of eye injury risk based on pressure data, and also that intraocular pressure measurements of impact may lead to a better understanding of thetransition between penetrating and blunt globe rupture injury mechanisms.

The age of the subducting Nazca Plate off Chile increases northwards from 0 Ma at the Chile Triple Junction (46°S) to 37 Ma at the latitude of Valparaíso (32°S). Age-related variations in the thermal state of the subducting plate impact on (a) the water influx to the subduction zone, as well as on (b) the volumes of water that are released under the continental forearc or, alternatively, carried beyond the arc. Southern Central Chile is an ideal setting to study this effect, because other factors for the subduction zone water budget appear constant. We determine the water influx by calculating the crustal water uptake and by modeling the upper mantle serpentinization at the outer rise of the Chile Trench. The water release under forearc and arc is determined by coupling FEM thermal models of the subducting plate with stability fields of water-releasing mineral reactions for upper and lower crust and hydrated mantle. Results show that both the influx of water stored in, and the outflux of water released from upper crust, lower crust and mantle vary drastically over segment boundaries. In particular, the oldest and coldest segments carry roughly twice as much water into the subduction zone as the youngest and hottest segments, but their release flux to the forearc is only about one fourth of the latter. This high variability over a subduction zone of < 1500 km length shows that it is insufficient to consider subduction zones as uniform entities in global estimates of subduction zone fluxes. The new generation jet engines operate at highly demanding working conditions. Such conditions need very precise design which implies an exhaustive study of the engine materials and behaviour in their extreme working conditions. With this purpose, this work intends to describe a numerically-based calibration of the widely-used Johnson–Cook fracture model, as well as its validation through high temperature ballistic impact tests. To do so, a widely-used turbine casing material is studied. This material is the Firth Vickers 535 martensitic stainless steel. Quasi-static tensile tests at various temperatures in a universal testing machine, as well as dynamic tests in a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar, are carried out at different triaxialities. Using ABAQUS/Standard and LS-DYNA numerical codes, experimental data are matched. This method allows the researcher to obtain critical data of equivalent plastic strain and triaxility, which allows for more precise calibration of the Johnson–Cook fracture model. Such enhancement allows study of the fracture behaviour of the material across its usage temperature range.

As a fundamental contribution to limiting the increase of debris in the Space environment, a three-year project started on 1 November 2010 financed by the European Commission under the FP-7 Space Programme. It aims at developing a universal system to be carried on board future satellites launched into low Earth orbit (LEO), to allow de-orbiting at end of life. The operational system involves a conductive tape-tether left bare of insulation to establish anodic contact with the ambient plasma as a giant Langmuir probe. The project will size the three disparate dimensions of a tape for a selected de-orbit mission and determine scaling laws to allow system design for a general mission. It will implement control laws to restrain tether dynamics in/off the orbital plane; and will carry out plasma chamber measurements and numerical simulations of tether-plasma interaction. The project also involves the design and manufacturing of subsystems: electron-ejecting plasma contactors, an electric control and power module, interface elements, tether and deployment mechanisms, tether tape/end-mass as well as current collection plus free-fall, and hypervelocity impact tests.

Virtual testing of composite materials has emerged as a new concept within the aerospace industry. It presents a very large potential to reduce the large certification costs and the long development times associated with the experimental campaigns, involving the testing of a large number of panels, sub-components and components. The aim of virtual testing is to replace some experimental tests by high-fidelity numerical simulations. This work is a contribution to the multiscale approach developed in Institute IMDEA Materials to predict the mechanical behavior of a composite laminate from the properties of the ply and the interply. Continuum Damage Mechanics (CDM) formulates intraply damage at the the material constitutive level. Intraply CDM is combined with cohesive elements to model interply damage. A CDM model was developed, implemented, and applied to simple mechanical tests of laminates: low and high velocity impact, tension of coupons, and shear deformation. The analysis of the results and the comparison with experiments indicated that the performance was reasonably good for the impact tests, but insuficient in the other cases. To overcome the limitations of CDM, the kinematics of the discrete finite element approximation was enhanced to include mesh embedded discontinuities, the eXtended Finite Element Method (X-FEM). The X-FEM was adapted to an explicit time integration scheme and was able to reproduce qualitatively the physical failure mechanisms in a composite laminate. However, the results revealed an inconsistency in the formulation that leads to erroneous quantitative results. Finally, the traditional X-FEM was reviewed, and a new method was developed to overcome its limitations, the stable cohesive X-FEM. The properties of the new method were studied in detail, and it was demonstrated that the new method was robust and can be implemented in a explicit finite element formulation, providing a new tool for damage simulation in composite materials.
