Information is summarized on juvenile salmonid distribution, size, condition, growth, stock origin, and species and environmental associations from June and August 2000 GLOBEC cruises with particular emphasis on differences related to the regions north and south of Cape Blanco off Southern Oregon. Juvenile salmon were more abundant during the August cruise as compared to the June cruise and were mainly distributed northward from Cape Blanco. There were distinct differences in distribution patterns between salmon species: chinook salmon were found close inshore in cooler water all along the coast and coho salmon were rarely found south of Cape Blanco. Distance offshore and temperature were the dominant explanatory variables related to coho and chinook salmon distribution. The nekton assemblages differed significantly between cruises. The June cruise was dominated by juvenile rockfishes, rex sole, and sablefish, which were almost completely absent in August. The forage fish community during June comprised Pacific herring and whitebait smelt north of Cape Blanco and surf smelt south of Cape Blanco. The fish community in August was dominated by Pacific sardines and highly migratory pelagic species. Estimated growth rates of juvenile coho salmon were higher in the GLOBEC study area than in areas farther north. An unusually high percentage of coho salmon in the study area were precocious males. Significant differences in growth and condition of juvenile coho salmon indicated different oceanographic environments north and south of Cape Blanco. The condition index was higher in juvenile coho salmon to the north but no significant differences were found for yearling chinook salmon. Genetic mixed stock analysis indicated that during June, most of the Chinook salmon in our sample originated from rivers along the central coast of Oregon. In August, chinook salmon sampled south of Cape Blanco were largely from southern Oregon and northern California; whereas most chinook salmon north of Cape Blanco were from the Central Valley in California.

Shortspine thornyhead (Sebastolobus alascanus) abundance was estimated from 107 video transects at 27 stations recorded from a research submersible in 1991 off southeast Alaska at depths ranging from 165 to 355 m. Numbers of invertebrates in seven major taxa were estimated, as was substrate type. Thornyhead abundance ranged from 0 to 7.5/100 m2, with a mean of 1.22/100 m2, and was positively correlated with depth and amount of hard substrate. Invertebrate abundances were not significantly correlated with numbers of thornyheads. Shortspine thornyhead abundance estimates from this study were several times higher than estimates produced by bottom trawl surveys off southeast Alaska in 1990 and 1993, the two years of survey that encompassed the submersible transects; however, the trend of increasing abundance with depth was similar in the trawl surveys and in the submersible transects, suggesting that trawl surveys systematically underestimate abundance of shortspine thornyheads

Pacific sea surface temperatures (SSTs) are examined for their associations with (1) summer rainfall, and (2) the latitude location of the mid-tropospheric subtropical high pressure ridge (STR) in the southwestern United States during 1945 to 1986. Extreme northward (southward) displacements of STR are associated with wet (dry) summers over Arizona and an enhanced (weakened) gradient of SST off the California and Baja coasts. These tend to follow winters marked by positive (negative) phases of the PNA, Pacific/North America, teleconnection pattern. Recent decadal variations of Arizona summer rainfall (1950s wet; 1970s dry) appear similarly related to southwestern United States synoptic circulation and eastern Pacific SSTs.

The crosstalk between naive nucleus and maternal factors deposited in egg cytoplasm before zygotic genome activation is crucial for early development. In this study, we utilized two laboratory fishes, zebrafish (Danio rerio) and Chinese rare minnow and Chinese rare minnow (Gobiocypris rarus), to obtain mutual crossbred embroys and examine the interaction between nucleus and egg cytoplasm from different species. Although these two types of crossbred embryos originated from common nuclei, various developmental capacities were gained due to different origins of the egg cytoplasm. Using cDNA amplified fragment length polymorphism (cDNA-AFLP), We Compared transcript profiles between the mutual crossbred embryos at two developmental stages (50%- and 90%-epiholy). Three thousand cDNA fragments were generated in four cDNA pools with 64 primer combinations. All differently displayed transcript-derived fragments (TDFs) were screened by (lot blot hybridization, and the selected sequences were further analyzed by semi-quantitative RT-PCR and quantitative real-time RT-PCR. Compared with ZR embryos, 12 genes were up-regulated and 12 were down-regulated in RZ embryos. The gene fragments were sequenced and subjected to BLASTN analysis. The sequences encoded various proteins which functioned at various levels of proliferation, growth, and development. One gene (ZR6), dramatically down-regulated in RZ embryos, was chosen for loss-of-function study; the knockdown of ZR6 gave rise to the phenotype resembling that of RZ embryos. (c) 2008 Elsevier Inc. Sedimentation variables and benthic community data were collected at seven stations during four seasons in Xiangxi Bay of the Three Gorges Reservoir, China. Summer, the season of highest discharge into the reservoir, was characterized by the extreme sediment loading. The benthic macroinvertebrate community was dominated by oligochaetes across all seasons at most stations. In winter/spring, macroinvertebrate density and richness increased. Correspondence analysis showed that community structure differed among stations at the two ends of the bay in winter and among almost all stations in spring, However, no variable associated with sedimentation appeared to be associated with differences in the community.

We study the mutual passivation of shallow donor and isovalent N in GaAs. We find that all the donor impurities, Si-Ga, Ge-Ga, S-As, and Se-As, bind to N in GaAsN, which has a large N-induced band-gap reduction relative to GaAs. For a group-IV impurity such as Si, the formation of the nearest-neighbor Si-Ga-N-As defect complex creates a deep donor level below the conduction band minimum (CBM). The coupling between this defect level with the CBM pushes the CBM upwards, thus restoring the GaAs band gap; the lowering of the defect level relative to the isolated Si-Ga shallow donor level is responsible for the increased electrical resistivity. Therefore, Si and N mutually passivate each other's electrical and optical activities in GaAs. For a group-VI shallow donor such as S, the binding between S-As and N-As does not form a direct bond; therefore, no mutual passivation exists in the GaAs(S+N) system.

We study the essential roles of self and mutual inductances in superconducting charge qubits and propose a scheme to couple charge qubits by means of mutual inductance. We also show that the Hamiltonians can be exactly formulated in compact forms in the spin-1/2 representation for both single- and double-qubit structures.

The dependence of the differential capacitance of polypyrrole doped with several typical dopants on potential is presented, which shows that the differential capacitance varies with the potential, the doped polypyrroles with electroactive ions give the largest capacitance near their formal potentials, which is attributed to the mutual media for electron transfer between polypyrrole and electroactive dopants. The existence of two conducting phases was observed in the complex capacitance plots. The electroactive anions act as an intra-conducting-phase medium for electron transfer, the electroactive cations act as an inter-conducting-phase medium for electron transfer. The mutual media between polypyrrole and redox dopants lead to the increase of the discharging time.
