Health safety during trips is based on previous counseling, vaccination and prevention of infections, previous diseases or specific problems related to the destination. Our aim was to assess two aspects, incidence of health problems related to travel and the traveler's awareness of health safety. To this end we phone-interviewed faculty members of a large public University, randomly selected from humanities, engineering and health schools. Out of 520 attempts, we were able to contact 67 (12.9%) and 46 (68.6%) agreed to participate in the study. There was a large male proportion (37/44, 84.1%), mature adults mostly in their forties and fifties (32/44, 72.7%), all of them with higher education, as you would expect of faculty members. Most described themselves as being sedentary or as taking occasional exercise, with only 15.9% (7/44) taking regular exercise. Preexisting diseases were reported by 15 travelers. Most trips lasted usually one week or less. Duration of the travel was related to the destination, with (12h) or longer trips being taken by 68.2% (30/44) of travelers, and the others taking shorter (3h) domestic trips. Most travelling was made by air (41/44) and only 31.8% (14/44) of the trips were motivated by leisure. Field research trips were not reported. Specific health counseling previous to travel was reported only by two (4.5%). Twenty seven of them (61.4%) reported updated immunization, but 11/30 reported unchecked immunizations. 30% (9/30) reported travel without any health insurance coverage. As a whole group, 6 (13.6%) travelers reported at least one health problem attributed to the trip. All of them were males travelling abroad. Five presented respiratory infections, such as influenza and common cold, one neurological, one orthopedic, one social and one hypertension. There were no gender differences regarding age groups, destination, type of transport, previous health counseling, leisure travel motivation or pre-existing diseases. Interestingly, the two cases of previous health counseling were made by domestic travelers. Our data clearly shows that despite a significant number of travel related health problems, these highly educated faculty members, had a low awareness of those risks, and a significant number of travels are made without prior counseling or health insurance. A counseling program conducted by a tourism and health professional must be implemented for faculty members in order to increase the awareness of travel related health problems.

Considering Alan Turing’s challenge in «Computing Machinery and Intelligence» (1950) – can machines play the «imitation game»? – it is proposed that the requirements of the Turing test are already implicitly being used for checking the credibility of virtual characters and avatars. Like characters, Avatars aim to visually express emotions (the exterior signs of the existence of feeling) and its creators have to resort to emotion codes. Traditional arts have profusely contributed for this field and, together with the science of anatomy, shaped the grounds for current Facial Action Coding System (FACS) and their databases. However, FACS researchers have to improve their «instruction tables» so that the machines will be able, in a near future, to be programmed to carry out the operation of recognizing human expressions (face and body) and classify them adequately. For the moment, the reproductions have to resort to the copy of real life expressions, and the presente smile of avatars comes from mirroring their human users.

From a narratological perspective, this paper aims to address the theoretical issues concerning the functioning of the so called «narrative bifurcation» in data presentation and information retrieval. Its use in cyberspace calls for a reassessment as a storytelling device. Films have shown its fundamental role for the creation of suspense. Interactive fiction and games have unveiled the possibility of plots with multiple choices, giving continuity to cinema split-screen experiences. Using practical examples, this paper will show how this storytelling tool returns to its primitive form and ends up by conditioning cloud computing interface design.

The aim of this paper is to address some theoretical issues concerning the narrative practice in cyberspace. From a narratological perspective it intends to clarify the functioning of time and space in storytelling. For that purpose it traces the concept(s) of memory inherited from rhetoric; the use of memory as a narrative device in traditional accounts; the adaptations imposed by hyperfiction. Using practical examples (including two Portuguese case studies - InStory 2006, and Noon 2007) it will show how narrative memory strategies can be helpful in game literacy. The main purpose is to contribute to serious game research and (trans)literary studies.

This study investigates the way of learning the English language in Portugal. First-year students of the faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of New University of Lisbon were selected as participants in the case study. As data collection tools a questionnaire and focus-groups were used. 115 students completed the designed questionnaire and after that 12 students were selected for the more detailed focus-group discussions. Results of the research show that most part of the students´ English knowledge is received from outside the classroom by means of movies, songs, computer games, the Internet, communication with friends and other sources. Also, the results show that motivation is very important in language learning process and motivated students acquire the language faster and easier.

A ideia de que as Matemáticas de Portugal (e de Espanha) atravessaram, depois de um período áureo nos Descobrimentos, um longo deserto onde não foi possível florescerem Mestres, nem escolas, nem cultura científica, nem investigação de relevo foi, durante muito tempo, reiteradamente veiculada, inclusivé através de alguns dos nossos mais referenciados historiadores da Matemática, como é o caso de Gomes Teixeira ou de Rey Pastor. Mas a verdade é que o estudo da História das Matemáticas em Portugal tem, na última década, vivido um interesse crescente onde sobressaem, em particular, uma leitura menos enviesada sobre, por exemplo, o papel educativo dos Jesuítas ou a publicação das obras completas de Pedro Nunes. Está-se assim a contribuir para uma compreensão mais completa da História geral de Portugal, de que a História da Ciência e da Cultura faz parte. José Anastácio da Cunha (1744-1787) foi figura de proa no século XVIII português. Sabíamo-lo matemático que, sem nunca ter saído de Portugal, havia sido capaz de antecipar, em mais de 50 anos, os esforços de matemáticos franceses e alemães para fundar a Matemática com rigor. Sabíamo-lo também autor de uma vasta e diversificada obra de inegável importância matemática mas, igualmente, autor de textos poéticos. Agora, com o projecto que denominámos de MAT2, centramo-nos em José Anastácio da Cunha e pretendemos, se possível, ir ainda mais além. Partimos de uma descoberta, árdua mas com final feliz, em um Arquivo de família: o da Casa de Mateus. Sentimo-nos, com esta “sorte”, privilegiados e gratos por nos ter sido gentilmente concedido o acesso a um vasto conjunto de documentos únicos (diários de viagens, notas de aulas e correspondência) que incluem memórias autógrafas e inéditas de Anastácio da Cunha. Organizámo-nos, cientes do trabalho árduo que temos pela frente, multi e interdisciplinarmente englobando a Matemática (nas suas múltiplas especializações) e a História (incluindo a da Matemática) mas também contando com a Física, a Informática, os estudos militares ou a Arquivística e as Humanidades; reunimos académicos, mais e menos veteranos, com investigadores jovens e juntámos valências nacionais e estrangeiras. No presente artigo daremos conta do percurso trilhado, até agora, pelo projecto MAT2.

Currently in Portugal academic excellence in higher education is given recognition through merit prizes. Because honours students can be seen as having the potential to achieve imporant levels of professional expertise, especially if they have some personal skills, it is important to know not only the marks of the students but also the personal characteristics that contribute to academic success and which may also be important for career success. Some theoretical models of giftedness and excellence agree with this idea and this work considers the latest contribution of Renzulli (2005) where it is pointed out that excellent achievements result from the combination of motivational, intellectual and creative factors as well as from co-cognitive factors which are most associated with personality functioning in a particular context. The main purpose of this paper is to analyze how honours students differ from their classmates in various psychological dimensions: Cognition-creativity, Motivation and Learning Strategies, Persistence, Social Interaction, Drive for Excellence and Cultural Interest. These dimensions were measured by the Inventory of Psychological Characteristics Associated with Academic Performance (ICPADA), which was constructed taking into consideration the previous study of Scaeger et al. (2012). The sample included 914 Portuguese higher educatoin students from a first cycle degree in the Bologna process. Participants were selected from three different fields of study: Social and Human Sciences; Science and Technology; Arts and Humanities. The data collected through the administration of the ICPADA was presented, and the results revealed a higher self-perception by honours students in all areas analyzed, with the exception of the dimension of social interaction. In addition an interaction effect was revealed for persistence, social interaction, and cultural interest. The field of study and whether the participants were honours students or not were also taken into account. Some implications for future studies are presented here along with possible interventions for honours students.

As características da atualidade exigem que se seja criativo e inovador. Todo o indivíduo pode rentabilizar intencionalmente seu potencial criativo, podendo e devendo a universidade ter um papel importante nesse desenvolvimento. Porém, observam-se perceções de barreiras à expressão criativa em alunos universitários, apesar de existir muito pouca investigação acerca do tema. Neste estudo, quis-se então analisar perceções de barreiras à criatividade em estudantes universitários portugueses, tomando 582 alunos de três áreas curriculares (Artes e Humanidades; Ciências e Tecnologias; Ciências Sociais e Humanas) e dois níveis de graduação (licenciatura e mestrado). Usou-se o Inventário de Barreiras Pessoais à Expressão Criativa, adaptado à realidade portuguesa. Foram avaliadas diferenças, considerando os fatores do inventário, mas também os seus itens numa análise mais detalhada. Encontraram-se diferenciações nos fatores para a área curricular e, no caso dos itens, para as duas variáveis estudadas. Algumas reflexões são feitas no sentido de repensar práticas no quotidiano académico.

This article revisits Michel Chevalier’s work and discussions of tariffs. Chevalier shifted from Saint-Simonism to economic liberalism during his life in the 19th century. His influence was soon perceived in the political world and economic debates, mainly because of his discussion of tariffs as instruments of efficient transport policies. This work discusses Chevalier’s thoughts on tariffs by revisiting his masterpiece, Le Cours d’Économie Politique. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) was conducted to test Chevalier’s hypothesis on the inefficiency of French tariffs. This work showed that Chevalier’s claims on French tariffs are not validated by DEA.

It has been the main concern of CEHUM, as a Research Centre within the Humanities which operates in an inter and transdisciplinary structure to listen attentively to the “noise of the world” and attempt a global interpretation of the signs of the times issuing from the world around us, as vibrant echoes of many social and cultural pressing issues. Every year each new Colóquio de Outono attempts to give evidence of that concern through the topic chosen for debate, ample enough and challenging enough to trigger a lively multidisciplinary dialogue amongst the diff erent research groups that compose this centre, the participants and our invited guest speakers. Throughout the three days of this 16th Colóquio de Outono we had the privilege to debate the propositions of a vast number of national and international specialists in the manifold fi elds of inquiry here represented, engaging keynote speakers, project advisors, members of research teams and external researchers attached to the various research projects currently running in CEHUM, in the fi elds of literature, linguistics, philosophy, ethics, visual arts, cultural studies, music and performance. Each specifi c fi eld of studies was however never seen isolated, but always embodied in a geo-cultural context and within the scope of a wide variety of critical debates and current theories of knowledge, as a signal of our understanding of the Humanities as a rich and plural territory which engages us all, scholars, researchers, students.

This text concerns a program about the Promotion of Social and Communicational Skills and Mediation (PSCSM) developed with children aged between 10 and 13 years in a non-formal educational institution. The program of intervention had, as its purpose, the promotion of social and communicational competencies and mediation, thus enabling the children involved to have a healthy and responsible sociability in the different contexts in which they find themselves: family, school, peer group, amongst others. It was developed over 13 sessions with objectives and activities intentionally planned with the view of promoting competencies of communication, co-operation, responsibility, a critical spirit, solidarity, autonomy, respect, integration, inclusion and the recognition of rights and duties. This work was carried out with an action-research methodology that resorted to various techniques and instruments to gather and record information. The results obtained showed the impact and benefits of the program and they also revealed the necessity of educational institutions investing in the promotion of an ethical literacy and the empowerment of the children and young people for healthy sociability and active citizenship.

Esta propuesta de investigación se enmarca en los encuentros y discusiones que se están realizando en la Escuela de Artes de la Facultad de Filosofía y Humanidades (CEPIA, CIFFyH y SeCyT, de la U.N.C), en relación a las problemáticas de la investigación en Artes. Los encuentros llevados a cabo en diversas ocasiones y a lo largo de 2009, demuestran la necesidad de establecer un campo particular de la investigación y su relación con la práctica artística. Este proyecto nace de estas inquietudes y establece ciertos ejes de trabajo que permiten poner en práctica ciertos esbozos imaginados. En este sentido, nuestra propuesta se centra en definir la misma construcción escénica como objeto de estudio, delimitando sobre éste la problemática de lo real en el trabajo de la ficción, proponiendo además un equipo que permita investigar en su propio desarrollo creativo las diversas variables que entran en juego. De este modo, se trabajará en una propuesta de laboratorio escénico donde los planteos de orden teórico atraviesen la práctica y, a su vez, la observación de ésta permita una reelaboración y profundización del pensamiento contemporáneo sobre la problemática ejecución/representación, desde los diversos órdenes en que ésta interviene. La idea de representación teatral que planteaba Aristóteles señala que las acciones devienen necesariamente en la definición del carácter de los personajes. Este concepto es clave en el desarrollo del teatro occidental y por ende en las diferentes concepciones de actor. La definición de acción dada por Aristóteles es problemática para parte del teatro contemporáneo ya que supone que toda acción es mimética. También da por supuesto que en el teatro se conforman personajes, y que la unidad narrativa está dada por una programática, que es definida por la acción.La presente investigación se propone indagar en la relación entre la ejecución de la acción y su representación en el desarrollo de un laboratorio teatral. Esto implica que necesariamente es aplicada al trabajo escénico. Nuestra hipótesis de partida es que la relación conflictiva entre acción, ejecución de la misma y representación, se produce a partir de la operación material sobre lo real . Estas intersecciones podrían ser pensadas como una teoría del montaje donde la corporalidad es el principio necesario e irreductible de la construcción. La intersección de lo real es una problemática que permite ahondar sobre los procedimientos por los cuales se construye la escena. La idea de un teatro material, obliga a pensar con qué procedimientos se construye ficción. Un teatro que intenta recalar en lo “real” como modo de señalar la cosa misma, se propone, desde la perspectiva de la realización, indagar en los mecanismos de su construcción (procedimientos), por lo cual supone que la actividad teatral puede dar cuenta de los procesos por los cuales se realiza. La realización de una acción, puede remitir a sí misma y genera una relación “extraña” y ambigua con el mundo de referencia. La acción en sí misma, pone en cuestión la idea de modelo y da cuenta de una crisis en la representación. La teoría ha intentado dividir y sistematizar de manera binaria la manifestación teatral: Teatro de Representación/ Teatro Performático, para distinguir un teatro vinculado a la creación de personajes o para relacionarlo a un teatro de ejecución. Sin embargo, pensamos que es posible encontrar en la producción escénica, intersecciones de lo real que median el mundo de la representación y el de la performance para la construcción de ficción. Nuestra hipótesis de base es que si intervenimos el plano de la ejecución en el actor, la representación varía sustancialmente sus mecanismos de producción de sentido. Este primer planteo no es conflictivo hasta que se pone de manifiesto lo real. This research’s proposal is framed into the meetings and discussions that have been taking place in the School of Arts of the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities (CEPIA, CIFFyH y SeCyT, of the National University of Cordoba), concerning the difficulties of research in Arts. The meetings carried out along 2009, demonstrate the need to establish a particular field of research and its relation to the practice of arts. This project is born from these concerns and it establishes central axis for the work, that enables us to put on practice some sketches imagined. In this regard, our proposal focuses on defining the construction of the scene as object of study, in itself, delimiting the issue of “the real” in the work of fiction. Proposing, furthermore, a team for researching the many variables that comes into play, in their own creative development. Consequently, the work will be developed in the method of a scenic laboratory, where the theoretical proposals cross over the practice and, in turn, these observations allow a reworking and deepen of contemporary thinking about the problematic of performance / representation, from the diverse orders in which it intervene. The idea of theatrical performance proposed by Aristotle, indicate that actions necessarily turn into the definition of the nature of the characters. This concept is key to the development of Western theaterand consequently on the different conceptions of actor. The definition of action given by Aristotle is problematic for a part of the contemporary theater, because it assumes that every action is mimetic. Also presumes that in the theatre the characters are formed, and narrative unit is given by a programmatic, which is defined by the action. This research proposes to explore the relationship between implementation of the action and its representation in the development of a theatrical laboratory. This implies that it is applied necessarily to the scenic practice. Our preliminary hypothesis is that the co.
