We present an extensive dataset of dimethylsulphide (DMS, n = 651) and dimethylsulphoniopropionate (DMSP, n = 590) from the Atlantic Meridional Transect programme. These data are used to derive representative depth profiles that illustrate observed natural variations and can be used for DMS and DMSP model-validation in oligotrophic waters. To further understand our dataset, we interpret the data with a wide range of accompanying parameters that characterise the prevailing biogeochemical conditions and phytoplankton community physiology, activity, taxonomic composition, and capacity to cope with light stress. No correlations were observed with typical biomarker pigments for DMSP-producing species. However, strong correlations were found between DMSP and primary production by cells >2 µm in diameter, and between DMSP and some photo-protective pigments. These parameters are measures of mixed phytoplankton communities, so we infer that such associations are likely to be stronger in DMSP-producing organisms. Further work is warranted to develop links between community parameters, DMS and DMSP at the global scale.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a frequent complication in individuals with cancer and is considered to be a cause of substantial mortality. Epidemiological studies identify malignancy as an independent VTE risk factor and show that cancer patients are at increased risk of both initial and recurrent VTE events. The risk due to cancer is compounded by the effects of chemotherapy and other treatments. The pathogenesis of cancer-associated VTE is complex involving multiple interactions between tumours and various components of haemostasis. The development of a systemic hypercoagulable state is considered a key pathogenetic feature and is attributed to tumour expression of tissue factor and other procoagulants, activation of vascular cells by tumour-derived cytokines and adhesive interactions between tumour cells and host cells. An increasing body of evidence indicates that the activation of haemostasis in malignant disease contributes to tumour growth and progression by stimulation of intracellular signalling pathways. The interaction of tissue factor, thrombin and other coagulation factors with protease activated receptor (PAR) proteins expressed by tumour cells and host vascular cells leads to the induction of genes related to the processes of angiogenesis, cell survival and cell adhesion and migration.

PURPOSE: Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) accumulate during aging and have been observed in postmortem eyes within the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), Bruch's membrane, and subcellular deposits (drusen). AGEs have been associated with age-related dysfunction of the RPE-in particular with development and progression to age-related macular degeneration (AMD). In the present study the impact of AGEs at the RPE-Bruch's membrane interface was evaluated, to establish how these modifications may contribute to age-related disease. METHODS: AGEs on Bruch's membrane were evaluated using immunohistochemistry. A clinically relevant in vitro model of substrate AGE accumulation was established to mimic Bruch's membrane ageing. Responses of ARPE-19 growing on AGE-modified basement membrane (AGE-BM) for 1 month were investigated by using a microarray approach and validated by quantitative (q)RT-PCR. In addition to identified AGE-related mRNA alterations, lysosomal enzyme activity and lipofuscin accumulation were also studied in ARPE-19 grown on AGE-BM. RESULTS: Autofluorescent and glycolaldehyde-derived AGEs were observed in clinical specimens on Bruch's membrane and choroidal extracellular matrix. In vitro analysis identified a range of dysregulated mRNAs in ARPE-19 exposed to AGE-BM. Altered ARPE-19 degradative enzyme mRNA expression was observed on exposure to AGE-BM. AGE-BM caused a significant reduction in cathepsin-D activity in ARPE-19 (P

This paper investigates the use of supply chains as a source of knowledge transfer to manufacturing businesses in South Yorkshire and the effect this can have on improving economic performance. It also looks at where assistance originates from, what factors influence who gets the assistance, and what the benefits are.

Actions that involve making contact with surfaces often demand perceptual regulation of the impact — for example, of feet with ground when walking or of bat with ball when hitting. Here we investigate how this control of impact is achieved in golf putting, where control of the clubhead motion at ball impact is paramount in ensuring that the ball will travel the required distance. Our results from ten professional golfers indicate that the clubhead motion is spatially scaled and perceptually regulated by coupling it onto an intrinsic guide generated in the nervous system.

Size-spectrum theory is used to show that (i) predation mortality is a decreasing function of individual size and proportional to the consumption rate of predators; (ii) adult natural mortality M is proportional to the von Bertalanffy growth constant K; and (iii) productivity rate P/B is proportional to the asymptotic weight W8 -1/3. The constants of proportionality are specified using individual level parameters related to physiology or prey encounter. The derivations demonstrate how traditional fisheries theory can be connected to community ecology. Implications for the use of models for ecosystem-based fisheries management are discussed.
