Three new cage-like mixed-valent polyoxovanadates [Ni(1,10'-phen)(3)](2)[V10O26] 1, [Zn(2,2'-biPY)(3)](3)[V15O36Cl](.)3H(2)O (2) and [Co(2,2'-biPY)(3)](3)[V15O36Cl](.)3H(2)O (3) have been hydrothermally synthesized for the first time and characterized by elemental analyses, IR, EPR spectra, TG analyses and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The polyoxoanion of I exhibits an interesting empty ellipsoidal [V-2(IV) V-8(V) O-26](4-) 'host' shell, while the oxo vanadium clusters of 2 and 3 possess a spherical [V-8(IV) V-7(V) O36Cl](6-) cage with a Cl- ion encapsulated. The structure-directing role of organic templates (1,10'-phen and 2,2'-bipy) on the formation of the polyoxoanion structures is discussed.

Drug-protein binding is an important process in determining the activity and fate of a pharmaceutical agent once it has entered the body. This review examines the method of microdialysis combined with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) that has been developed;by ours to study such interactions, in which the microdialysis was applied to sample the free drug in the mixed solution of drug with protein, and HPLC to quantify the concentration of free drug in the microdialysate. This technique has successfully been used for determining various types of binding interactions between the low affinity drugs, high affinity drugs and enantiomers to HSA. For the case of competitive binding of two drugs to a protein in solution, a displacement equation has been derived and examined with four nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and HSA as model drugs and protein, respectively. Microdialysis with HPLC was adopted to determine simultaneously the free solute and displacing agent in drug-protein solutions. The method is able to locate the binding site and determine affinity constants even up to 10(7) L/mol accurately.

2002cx-like supernovae are a sub-class of sub-luminous Type Ia supernovae (SNe). Their light curves and spectra are characterized by distinct features that indicate strong mixing of the explosion ejecta. Pure turbulent deflagrations have been shown to produce such mixed ejecta. Here, we present hydrodynamics, nucleosynthesis and radiative-transfer calculations for a 3D full-star deflagration of a Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarf. Our model is able to reproduce the characteristic observational features of SN 2005hk (a prototypical 2002cx-like supernova), not only in the optical, but also in the near-infrared. For that purpose we present, for the first time, five near-infrared spectra of SN 2005hk from -0.2 to 26.6 d with respect to B-band maximum. Since our model burns only small parts of the initial white dwarf, it fails to completely unbind the white dwarf and leaves behind a bound remnant of ~1.03Mconsisting mainly of unburned carbon and oxygen, but also enriched by some amount of intermediate-mass and iron-group elements from the explosion products that fall back on the remnant. We discuss possibilities for detecting this bound remnant and how it might influence the late-time observables of 2002cx-like SNe. © 2013 The Authors Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the Royal Astronomical Society.

The mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase family is activated in response to a wide variety of external stress signals such as UV irradiation, heat shock, and many chemotherapeutic drugs and leads to the induction of apoptosis. A novel series of pyrrolo-1,5-benzoxazepines have been shown to potently induce apoptosis in chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) cells, which are resistant to many chemotherapeutic agents. In this study we have delineated part of the mechanism by which a representative compound known as PBOX-6 induces apoptosis. We have investigated whether PBOX-6 induces activation of MAP kinase signaling pathways in CML cells. Treatment of K562 cells with PBOX-6 resulted in the transient activation of two JNK isoforms, JNK1 and JNK2. In contrast, PBOX-6 did not activate the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) or p38. Apoptosis was found to occur independently of the small GTPases Ras, Rac, and Cdc42 but involved phosphorylation of the JNK substrates, c-Jun and ATF-2. Pretreatment of K562 cells with the JNK inhibitor, dicoumarol, abolished PBOX-6-induced phosphorylation of c-Jun and ATF-2 and inhibited the induced apoptosis, suggesting that JNK activation is an essential component of the apoptotic pathway induced by PBOX-6. Consistent with this finding, transfection of K562 cells with the JNK scaffold protein, JIP-1, inhibited JNK activity and apoptosis induced by PBOX-6. JIP-1 specifically scaffolds JNK, MKK7, and members of the mixed-lineage kinase (MLK) family, implicating these kinases upstream of JNK in the apoptotic pathway induced by PBOX-6 in K562 cells.

Transitioning from elementary to secondary school is a major event in adolescents' lives and can be associated with academic, social, and emotional challenges (Shaffer, 2005; Sirsch, 2003). Considerably less research has focused on the transitional experiences of students with intellectual disabilities (lD) as they enter secondary school and the role of educational inclusion in this process (Noland, Cason, & Lincoln, 2007). Conceivably, students with ID who leave inclusive elementary schools, where they have been educated alongside their peers without ID, and who enter segregated secondary educational placements may experience unique social and emotional challenges (Farmer, Pearl, & Van Acker, 1996; Fryxell & Kennedy, 1995; Shaffer, 2005). This study examined the transitional experiences of 6 students with ID and the role of educational inclusion, with a focus on elementary to secondary school transitions from inclusive to segregated settings and vice versa. This study included the collection of multiple sources of data. Semi-structured interviews with 6 caregivers and students with ID were conducted. Students' Individual Education Transitional Plans were discussed in caregivers' interviews to determine how they shaped students' educational inclusion experiences (Ontario Ministry of Education & Training, 1999/2000/2004). Parts ofthe following questionnaires were "qualitized" (Tashakkori & Teddlie, 1998) and administered orally: "Youth Self-Report" (YSR; Achenbach, 2001 c) and "Child Behaviour Checklist Caregivers Form" (CBLC/6-18; Achenbach, 200la). The findings of this study contribute to the literature on educational inclusion by highlighting the positive/negative social and emotional impact of congruent and incongruent transitional experiences of students with ID and the role of educational inclusion.

The limit of electron transfer in electron affinity from the oxide surface to the electron acceptor (EA) are reported from the adsorption of EA on DY203, mixed oxides of DY203 with alumina and mixed oxides of Y203 with y-alumina. The extent of electron transfer is understood from magnetic measurements.

The addition of the atropisomeric racemic sulfur compound 4,4′-biphenanthrene-3,3′-dithiol (H2 biphes) to a dichloromethane solution of [{M(μ-OMe)(cod)}2] (M = Rh, Ir, cod = cycloocta-1,5-diene) afforded the dithiolate-bridged complexes [{Rh2(μ-biphes)(cod)2}n] (n = 2 5 or n = 1 6) and [{Ir2(μ-biphes)(cod)2}n]·nCH2Cl27. When 1,1′-binaphthalene-2,2′-dithiol (H2 binas) reacted with [{Ir(μ-OMe)(cod)}2], complex [Ir2(μ-binas)(cod)2] 8 was obtained. Complexes 5 and 6 reacted with carbon monoxide to give the dinuclear tetracarbonyl complex [Rh2(μ-biphes)(CO)4] 9. The reaction of 9 with PR3 provided the mixed-ligand complexes [{Rh2(μ-biphes)(CO)2(PR3)2}2] · xCH2Cl2 (R = Ph, x = 2 10, C6H11, x = 1 11) and [{Rh2(μ-biphes)(CO)3(PR3)}2] · CH2Cl212 (R = OC6H4But-o). The crystal structure of 6 was determined by X-ray diffraction. Reaction of the dithioether ligand Me2biphes with [Rh(cod)2]ClO4 in CH2Cl2 solution afforded the cationic complex [Rh(cod)(Me2biphes)]ClO4 · CH2Cl213. Asymmetric hydroformylation of styrene was performed using the complexes described. The extent of aldehyde conversion ranges from 53 to 100%, with selectivities towards branched aldehydes in the range 51 to 96%. The enantioselectivities were quite low and did not exceed 20%.

The recommendation to reduce saturated fatty acid (SFA) consumption to ≤10% of total energy (%TE) is a key public health target aimed at lowering cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Replacement of SFA with unsaturated fats may provide greater benefit than replacement with carbohydrates, yet the optimal type of fat is unclear. The aim was to develop a flexible food-exchange model to investigate the effects of substituting SFAs with monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) or n-6 (ω-6) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) on CVD risk factors. In this parallel study, UK adults aged 21-60 y with moderate CVD risk (50% greater than the population mean) were identified using a risk assessment tool (n = 195; 56% females). Three 16-wk isoenergetic diets of specific fatty acid (FA) composition (%TE SFA:%TE MUFA:%TE n-6 PUFA) were designed using spreads, oils, dairy products, and snacks as follows: 1) SFA-rich diet (17:11:4; n = 65); 2) MUFA-rich diet (9:19:4; n = 64); and 3) n-6 PUFA-rich diet (9:13:10; n = 66). Each diet provided 36%TE total fat. Dietary targets were broadly met for all intervention groups, reaching 17.6 ± 0.4%TE SFA, 18.5 ± 0.3%TE MUFA, and 10.4 ± 0.3%TE n-6 PUFA in the respective diets, with significant overall diet effects for the changes in SFA, MUFA, and n-6 PUFA between groups (P < 0.001). There were no differences in the changes of total fat, protein, carbohydrate, and alcohol intake or anthropometric measures between groups. Plasma phospholipid FA composition showed changes from baseline in the proportions of total SFA, MUFA, and n-6 PUFA for each diet group, with significant overall diet effects for total SFA and MUFA between groups (P < 0.001). In conclusion, successful implementation of the food-exchange model broadly achieved the dietary target intakes for the exchange of SFA with MUFA or n-6 PUFA with minimal disruption to the overall diet in a free-living population. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT01478958.

The objectives were to separate canine seminal plasma proteins (with SDS-PAGE) and to determine the correlation between specific proteins and semen characteristics. Three ejaculates from 20 mixed-breed dogs, of unknown fertility, were collected by digital manipulation. Ejaculate volume and color, sperm motility, sperm vigor, percentage of morphologically normal spermatozoa, and membrane integrity (hypoosmotic swelling test and fluorescent staining) were assessed. For each dog, seminal plasma was pooled from all three ejaculates and proteins were separated with SDS-PAGE, using polyacrylamide concentrations of 13% and 22% in the separation gels. After staining, gel images were digitized to estimate molecular weights (MW) and integrated optical density (IOD) of each lane and of individual bands. Total seminal plasma protein concentration was 2.19 +/- 1.56 g/dL (mean +/- SD; range 1.12-5.19 g/dL). A total of 37 protein bands were identified (although no dog had all 37 bands). In the 13% gel, molecular weights ranged from 100.6 to 17.1 kDa, with four bands (49.7, 33.2, 26.4, and 19.5 kDa) present in samples from all dogs. In the 22% gel, molecular weights ranged from 15.6 to 3.6 kDa, with nine bands (15.6, 13.5, 12.7, 11.7, 10.5, 8.7, 7.8, 5.6, and 4.9 kDa) present in samples from all dogs. Combined for both gels, the majority of bands (85%) had molecular weights < 17 kDa, with B20 (15.6 kDa) in high concentrations in samples from all dogs. There were positive correlations (P <= 0.01) between two bands, 134 (67 kDa) and B5 (58.6 kDa), and sperm motility (r = 0.66 and r = 0.46), sperm vigor (r = 0.56 and r = 0.66), percentage of morphologically normal spermatozoa (r = 0.55 and r = 0.59), the hypoosmotic swelling test (r = 0.76 and r 0.68), and fluorescent staining (r = 0.56 and r = 0.59), respectively. In conclusion, 37 proteins were identified in seminal plasma; two were significantly correlated with semen characteristics. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AimTo evaluate prospectively the clinical and radiographic outcomes after 2 years of loading of 6 mm long moderately rough implants supporting single crowns in the posterior regions.Material and methodsForty SLActive Straumann (R) short (6 mm) implants were placed in 35 consecutively treated patients. Nineteen implants, 4.1 mm in diameter, and 21 implants, 4.8 mm in diameter, were installed. Implants were loaded after 6 weeks of healing. Implant survival rate, marginal bone loss and resonance frequency analysis (RFA) were evaluated at different intervals. The clinical crown/implant ratio was also calculated.ResultsTwo out of 40 implants were lost before loading. Hence, the survival rate before loading was 95%. No further technical or biological complications were encountered during the 2-year follow-up. The mean marginal bone loss before loading was 0.34 +/- 0.38 mm. After loading, the mean marginal bone loss was 0.23 +/- 0.33 and 0.21 +/- 0.39 mm at the 1- and 2-year follow-ups. The RFA values increased between insertion (70.2 +/- 9) and the 6-week evaluation (74.8 +/- 6.1). The clinical crown/implant ratio increased with time from 1.5 at the delivery of the prosthesis to 1.8 after 2 years of loading.ConclusionShort implants (6 mm) with a moderately rough surface loaded early (after 6 weeks) during healing yielded high implant survival rates and moderate loss of bone after 2 years of loading. Longer observation periods are needed to draw more definite conclusions on the reliability of short implants supporting single crowns. To cite this article:Rossi F, Ricci E, Marchetti C, Lang NP, Botticelli D. The objective of this study was to evaluate the electrocardiographic alterations in the cardiac rhythm in dogs treated with levamisole hydrochloride over a period of 24 hours. Thirty-six mixed-breed dogs, both male and female, all clinically healthy, were used in the experiment. The dogs were divided into 6 groups with 6 dogs in each group, according to dosage and route of administration. The Holter test was initiated immediately after the treatment, and was maintained for 24 hours. In the group treated with 10 mg/kg by way of subcutaneous injection, one of them showed ventricular premature complexes, sometimes isolated and other times in pairs, and ventricular tachycardia, concentrated mainly in the first hour after administration of the drug. In the group of 6 animals treated subcutaneously with 25mg/kg, four showed isolated ventricular premature complexes, ventricular bigeminy and trigeminy, mainly during the first 2 hours after administration of the drug. All the animals in the other groups showed sinus arrhythmia followed by sinus arrest. The disturbances in the cardiac rhythm observed in clinically healthy animals treated with levamisole hydrochloride, indicate that it is preferable to avoid subcutaneous administration of levamisole hydrochloride and that the oral administration of the drug should be done with caution. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. Using the QCD sum rule approach we study the Y(4260) state assuming that it can be described by a mixed charmonium-tetraquark current with J(PC) = 1(--) quantum numbers. For the mixing angle around theta approximate to (53.0 +/- 0.5)degrees, we obtain a value for the mass which is in good agreement with the experimental mass of the Y(4260). For the decay width into the channel Y -> J/psi pi pi we find the value Gamma(Y -> J/psi pi pi) approximate to (4.1 +/- 0.6) MeV, which is much smaller than the total experimental width Gamma approximate to (95 +/- 14) MeV. However, considering the experimental upper limits for the decay of the Y(4260) into open charm, we conclude that we cannot rule out the possibility of describing this state as a mixed charmonium-tetraquark state. An high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for the enantioselective determination of donepezil (DPZ), 5-O-desmethyl donepezil (5-ODD), and 6-O-desmethyl donepezil (6-ODD) in Czapek culture medium to be applied to biotransformation studies with fungi is described for the first time. The HPLC analysis was carried out using a Chiralpak AD-H column with hexane/ethanol/methanol (75:20:5, v/v/v) plus 0.3 % triethylamine as mobile phase and UV detection at 270 nm. Sample preparation was carried out by liquid-liquid extraction using ethyl acetate as extractor solvent. The method was linear over the concentration range of 100-10,000 ng mL(-1) for each enantiomer of DPZ (r a parts per thousand yenaEuro parts per thousand 0.9985) and of 100-5,000 ng mL(-1) for each enantiomer of 5-ODD (r a parts per thousand yenaEuro parts per thousand 0.9977) and 6-ODD (r a parts per thousand yenaEuro parts per thousand 0.9951). Within-day and between-day precision and accuracy evaluated by relative standard deviations and relative errors, respectively, were lower than 15 % for all analytes. The validated method was used to assess DPZ biotransformation by the fungi Beauveria bassiana American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) 7159 and Cunninghamella elegans ATCC 10028B. Using the fungus B. bassiana ATCC 7159, a predominant formation of (R)-5-ODD was observed while for the fungus C. elegans ATCC 10028B, DPZ was biotransformed to (R)-6-ODD with an enantiomeric excess of 100 %.
