In a combustion process involving fossil fuels, there is the formation of species Chemiluminescent, especially CH*, C2* and OH*, whose spontaneous emission can be used as a diagnostic tool. In the present work, mapping and determination of the rotational temperature of the species CH* produced in flames on a burner fueled by Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) was carried out. This study is part of a project involving the characterization of supersonic combustion in scramjets engines, whose study has been conducted in the hypersonic shock tunnel IEAv laboratories. The technique used was the natural emission spectroscopy, which has as main advantage of being non-intrusive. The rotational temperature determination was made using the Boltzmann method, whose principle is to relate the emission intensity of the species to the temperature by means of spectroscopic constants established. The temperature values were determined from the analysis of electronic bands AX and BX of the radical CH*. In order to confirm the results of flame temperatures obtained by the natural emission technique, was also used the technique of line reversal sodium. The results of both techniques showed that the temperature of the flames investigated is about 2500K a 2700K

The increasing demand for devices for solid state applications in many technological areas has resulted in a high demand for new materials. Among these material have the advantage of being manufactured with different chemical compositions, and may have physical properties equal to or higher than the corresponding crystalline material. The aim of this paper was to produce borate glass system 50B2O3 – 15CuO – 20Li2O – 15X (X = Na2O, K2O, RbCl e Cs2O) to analyze the influence of the atomic radius of alkali in the physical properties of this glass system. The glasses were synthesized by the process of melting and molding. The characteristic temperatures were determined by the technique of scanning calorimetry (DSC). The non-crystalline was determined by x-ray diffraction. In order to determine the molar volume a density measurement by using the Archimedes method was used. The structural characterization was carried out using the technique of infrared spectroscopy

High pressure NMR spectroscopy has developed into an important tool for studying conformational equilibria of proteins in solution. We have studied the amide proton and nitrogen chemical shifts of the 20 canonical amino acids X in the random-coil model peptide Ac-Gly-Gly-X-Ala-NH2, in a pressure range from 0.1 to 200 MPa, at a proton resonance frequency of 800 MHz. The obtained data allowed the determination of first and second order pressure coefficients with high accuracy at 283 K and pH 6.7. The mean first and second order pressure coefficients <B-1(15N)> and <B-2(15N)> for nitrogen are 2.91 ppm/GPa and -2.32 ppm/GPa(2), respectively. The corresponding values <B-1(1H)> and <B-2(1H)> for the amide protons are 0.52 ppm/GPa and -0.41 ppm/GPa(2). Residual dependent (1)J(1H15N)-coupling constants are shown.

The PSFC (Pr0.5Sr0.5Fe1-xCuxO3-δ) is a new mixed oxide perovskite and has been studied and evaluated the cathode materials for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs), mainly due to its good compatibility with the electrolyte (CGO) and its high ionic conductivity and electronic in intermediate temperature. In this work, PSFC powders with two different compositions (Pr0,5Sr0,5Fe0,8Cu0,2O3- PSFC5582 and Pr0,5Sr0,5Fe0,6Cu0,4O3-PSFC5564) were synthesized by the citrate method using a new route. The powders obtained were characterized by thermal analysis (Differential Scanning Calorimetry and Thermogravimetry), and the material calcined at 800, 900 and 1000 °C for 5h were analyzed by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), with the Rietveld refinement of the diffraction data and dilatometry. PSFC5582 composite films were obtained by screen printing of powder calcined at 1000 °C. The films were deposited on substrate ceria doped with gadolinia (CGO) and then sintered at 1050 °C for 2h. The electrochemical performance of the electrodes was evaluated by impedance spectroscopy and the interface electrode/electrolyte was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The specific resistance area (ASR) was 0.44 Ω.cm² at 800 °C, slightly lower than those reported in the literature for cathodes containing cobalt. The thermal expansion coefficients of both the PSFC compositions were obtained and varied between 13 and 15 x 10-6 °C-1 , in a temperature range of 200 to 650 °C, demonstrating the good thermal compatibility of cathodes with Ce0,9Gd0,1O1,95 electrolytes (CET = 12 x 10-6 °C).

We present the results of electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and x-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements in Tb1−xYxRhIn5 (x = 0.00, 0.15, 0.4.0, 0.50 e 0.70) single crystals. Tb1−xYxRhIn5 is an antiferromagnetic AFM compound with ordering temperature TN ≈ 46 K, the higher TN within the RRhIn5 serie (R : rare earth). We evaluate the physical properties evolution and the supression of the AFM state considering doping and Crystalline Electric Field (CEF) effects on magnetic exchange interaction between Tb3+ magnetic ions. CEF acts like a perturbation potential, breaking the (2J + 1) multiplet s degeneracy. Also, we studied linear-polarization-dependent soft x-ray absorption at Tb M4 and M5 edges to validate X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy as a complementary technique in determining the rare earth CEF ground state. Samples were grown by the indium excess flux and the experimental data (magnetic susceptibility and specific heat) were adjusted with a mean field model that takes account magnetic exchange interaction between first neighbors and CEF effects. XAS experiments were carried on Total Electron Yield mode at Laborat´onio Nacional de Luz S´ıncrotron, Campinas. We measured X-ray absorption at Tb M4,5 edges with incident polarized X-ray beam parallel and perpendicular to c-axis (E || c e E ⊥ c). The mean field model simulates the mean behavior of the whole system and, due to many independent parameters, gives a non unique CEF scheme. XAS is site- and elemental- specific technique and gained the scientific community s attention as complementary technique in determining CEF ground state in rare earth based compounds. In this work we wil discuss the non conclusive results of XAS technique in TbRhIn5 compounds.

The present work deals with the synthesis of materials with perovskite structure with the intention of using them as cathodes in fuel cells SOFC type. The perovskite type materials were obtained by chemical synthesis method, using gelatin as the substituent of citric acid and ethylene glycol, and polymerizing acting as chelating agent. The materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, spectroscopy Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy with EDS, surface area determination by the BET method and Term Reduction Program, TPR. The compounds were also characterized by electrical conductivity for the purpose of observing the possible application of this material as a cathode for fuel cells, solid oxide SOFC. The method using gelatin and polymerizing chelating agent for the preparation of materials with the perovskite structure allows the synthesis of crystalline materials and homogeneous. The results demonstrate that the route adopted to obtain materials were effective. The distorted perovskite structure have obtained the type orthorhombic and rhombohedral; important for fuel cell cathodes. The presentation material properties required of a candidate cathode materials for fuel cells. XRD analysis contacted by the distortion of the structures of the synthesized materials. The analyzes show that the electrical conductivity obtained materials have the potential to act as a cell to the cathode of solid oxide fuel, allowing to infer an order of values for the electrical conductivities of perovskites where LaFeO3 < LaNiO3 < LaNi0,5Fe0,5O3. It can be concluded that the activity of these perovskites is due to the presence of structural defects generated that depend on the method of synthesis and the subsequent heat treatment

The Body Mass Index (BMI) has been used worldwide as an indicator of fatness. However, the universal cut-off points by the World Health Organisation (WHO) classification may not be appropriate for every ethnic group when consider the relationship with their actual total body fatness(%BF). The application of population-specific classifications to assess BMI may be more relevant to public health. Ethnic differences in the BMI%BF relationship between 45 Japanese and 42 Australian-Caucasian males were assessed using whole body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan and anthropometry using a standard protocol. Japanese males had significantly (p<0.05) greater %BF at given BMI values than Australian males. When this is taken into account the newly proposed Asia-Pacific BMI classification of BMI 23 as overweight and 25 as obese may better assess the level of obesity that is associated increased health risks for this population. To clarify the current findings, further studies that compare the relationships across other Japanese populations are recommended.

By using the Rasch model, much detailed diagnostic information is available to developers of survey and assessment instruments and to the researchers who use them. We outline an approach to the analysis of data obtained from the administration of survey instruments that can enable researchers to recognise and diagnose difficulties with those instruments and then to suggest remedial actions that can improve the measurement properties of the scales included in questionnaires. We illustrate the approach using examples drawn from recent research and demonstrate how the approach can be used to generate figures that make the results of Rasch analyses accessible to non-specialists.

It is often postulated that an increased hip to shoulder differential angle (`X-Factor') during the early downswing better utilises the stretch-shorten cycle and improves golf performance. The current study aims to examine the potential relationship between the X-Factor and performance during the tee-shot. Seven golfers with handicaps between 0 and 10 strokes comprised the low-handicap group, whilst the high-handicap group consisted of eight golfers with handicaps between 11 and 20 strokes. The golfers performed 20 drives and three-dimensional kinematic data were used to quantify hip and shoulder rotation and the subsequent X-Factor. Compared with the low-handicap group, the high-handicap golfers tended to demonstrate greater hip rotation at the top of the backswing and recorded reduced maximum X-Factor values. The inconsistencies evident in the literature may suggest that a universal method of measuring rotational angles during the golf swing would be beneficial for future studies, particularly when considering potential injury.

Computer tomography has been used to image and reconstruct in 3-D an Egyptian mummy from the collection of the British Museum. This study of Tjentmutengebtiu, a priestess from the 22nd dynasty (945-715 BC) revealed invaluable information of a scientific, Egyptological and palaeopathological nature without mutilation and destruction of the painted cartonnage case or linen wrappings. Precise details on the removal of the brain through the nasal cavity and the viscera from the abdominal cavity were obtained. The nature and composition of the false eyes were investigated. The detailed analysis of the teeth provided a much closer approximation of age at death. The identification of materials used for the various amulets including that of the figures placed in the viscera was graphically demonstrated using this technique.

X-ray computed tomography (CT) is a medical imaging technique that produces images of trans-axial planes through the human body. When compared with a conventional radiograph, which is an image of many planes superimposed on each other, a CT image exhibits significantly improved contrast although this is at the expense of reduced spatial resolution.----- A CT image is reconstructed mathematically from a large number of one dimensional projections of the chosen plane. These projections are acquired electronically using a linear array of solid-state detectors and an x ray source that rotates around the patient.----- X-ray computed tomography is used routinely in radiological examinations. It has also be found to be useful in special applications such as radiotherapy treatment planning and three-dimensional imaging for surgical planning.
