We study the nonlinear photonics of rare-earth-doped oxyfluoride nanophase vitroceramics (FOV), oxyfluoride glass (FOG), and ZBLAN fluoride glass. We found that an interesting fluorescence intensity inversion phenomenon between red and green fluorescence occurs from Er(0.5)Yb(3):FOV The dynamic range Sigma of the intensity inversion between red and green fluorescence of Er(0.5)Yb(3):FOV is about 5.753 x 10(2), which is 100 to 1000 times larger than those of other materials. One of the applications of this phenomenon is double-wavelength fluorescence falsification-preventing technology, which is proved to possess the novel antifriction loss and antiscribble properties. There has been a perception of increasing river channel instability in north west rivers and the River Lune in particular in recent decades. This has been attributed variously to: (a) long-term trends in precipitation-runoff regime; (b) changes in land-use such as moor-draining and sub-soil draining such that the river is more flashy than previously, and (c) a change in the magnitude-frequency relationships of flow such that high discharges are occurring with increased frequency. Resources are available in the form of rainfall and runoff records, archived information on channel planform, land use statistics and local engineering experience which have not been jointly and fully evaluated. Effective interpretation of the nature of channel change through time with respect to this resource may enhance the Environment Agency's ability to manage the river channel efficiently in the future and will aid the development of effective policy. The results of this study will for the first time, provide robust guidance with respect to long-term channel adjustment and the appropriate management options. The research provides suggestions as to how policy might be developed taking account of other pertinent factors.

In (2 + 1) dimension, growth process of thin film on non-planar substrate in Kuramoto-Sivashinsky model is studied with numerical simulation approach. 15 x 15 semi-ellipsoids arranged orderly on the surface of substrate are used to represent initial rough surface. The results show that at the initial stage of growth process, the surface morphology of thin film appears to be grid-structure, and the interface width constantly decreases with the growth time, then reaches minimum. However, the grid-structure becomes ambiguous, and granules of different sizes distribute evenly on the surface of thin film with the increase of growth time. Thereafter, the average size of granules and the interface width gradually increase, and the surface morphology of thin film presents fractal properties. The numerical results of height-height correlation functions of thin film verify the surface morphology of thin film to be fractal for a longer growth time. By fitting of the height-height correlation functions of thin film with different growth times, the growth process is described quantitatively. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The CGIAR Strategy and Results Framework sets out four system level outcomes (SLOs), namely: reducing rural poverty, improving food security, improving nutrition and health and sustainable management of natural resources. In pursuit of these objectives the CGIAR has developed a set of sixteen CGIAR Research Programs (CRPs), each of which is expected to make specific contributions to a range of intermediate development outcomes (IDOs) linked to the SLOs. As part of this work the CRPs are developing impact pathways and theories of change designed to explain how the programs will achieve IDOs. The purpose of the present paper is to explain the approach that the CRP on Aquatic Agricultural Systems (AAS) is taking to using these programmatic tools to help achieve impact.

The dynamics of the survival of recruiting fish are analyzed as evolving random processes of aggregation and mortality. The analyses draw on recent advances in the physics of complex networks and, in particular, the scale-free degree distribution arising from growing random networks with preferential attachment of links to nodes. In this study simulations were conducted in which recruiting fish 1) were subjected to mortality by using alternative mortality encounter models and 2) aggregated according to random encounters (two schools randomly encountering one another join into a single school) or preferential attachment (the probability of a successful aggregation of two schools is proportional to the school sizes). The simulations started from either a “disaggregated” (all schools comprised a single fish) or an aggregated initial condition. Results showed the transition of the school-size distribution with preferential attachment evolving toward a scale-free school size distribution, whereas random attachment evolved toward an exponential distribution. Preferential attachment strategies performed better than random attachment strategies in terms of recruitment survival at time when mortality encounters were weighted toward schools rather than to individual fish. Mathematical models were developed whose solutions (either analytic or numerical) mimicked the simulation results. The resulting models included both Beverton-Holt and Ricker-like recruitment, which predict recruitment as a function of initial mean school size as well as initial stock size. Results suggest that school-size distributions during recruitment may provide information on recruitment processes. The models also provide a template for expanding both theoretical and empirical recruitment research.
