A stable lipid cast film was made by casting a lipid in chloroform onto a glassy carbon electrode. We imbedded a new mediator norepinephrine into this lipid cast film, which was considered as a biological membrane model. Through electro catalytic oxidation of ascorbic acid by this system, the anodic overpotential was reduced by about 250 mV compared with that obtained at a bare glassy carbon electrode. The electrochemical behavior of norepinephrine in the cast film was controlled by diffusion. The obtained diffusion coefficient of ascorbic acid was 1.87 x 10(-5) cm 2 s(-1). The catalytic current increased linearly with the concentration of ascorbic acid in the range from 0.5 to 10 mM. Using cyclic voltammetry, we obtained two peaks for ascorbic acid and uric acid in the same solution. The separation between the two peaks is about 147 mV. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. 1,7-Diaminoheptane (DAH) had been covalently grafted on glassy carbon electrode by amino cation radical formation, which resulted in a stable cationic monolayer under proper pH conditions. Dawson-type tungstodiphosphate anion, P2W18O626- and small molecule, Ru(NH3)(6)(3+) were alternately assembled on the DAH modified electrode through layer-by-layer electrostatic interaction. Thus-prepared multilayer film had been characterized by cyclic voltammetry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The P2W18O626- multilayers exhibit high electrocatalytic response and sensitivity towards the reduction of iodate. With the increase of the number of P2W18O626- the catalytic current was enhanced and the catalytic potential shifted positively. Iodate in table salt was determined at the modified electrode containing three layers of P2W18O626- with satisfactory results. The multilayer electrode is promising as an electrochemical sensor for the detection of trace iodate.

An electrochemically stable monolayer of tris(2,2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) was obtained for the first time. It was based on the electrostatic attachment of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) to the benzene sulfonic acid monolayer film, which was covalently bound onto glassy carbon electrode by the electrochemical reduction of diazobenzene sulfonic acid. The surface-confined Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) underwent reversible surface process, and reacted with the coreactant, tripropylamine, to produce electrochemiluminescence. In view of the stability of the electrode, the results strongly suggested that light was emitted from the surface-confined Ru(bpy)(3)(2+), not from the detached Ru(bpy)(3)(2+). The Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) modified electrode was used to the determination of tripropylamine. It showed good linearity in the concentration range from 5 muM to 1 muM with a detection limit of 1 muM (S/N = 4). The good stability of the Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) modified electrode also showed that the benzene sulfonic acid monolayer film prepared can be served as an excellent support to construct multilayers. Manganous hexacyanoferrate (MnHCF) supported on graphite powder was dispersed into methyltrimethoxysilane-derived gels to yield a conductive composite, which was used as electrode material to construct a renewable three-dimensional MnHCF-modifed electrode. MnHCF acts as a catalyst, graphite powder ensures conductivity by percolation, the silicate provides a rigid porous backbone, and the methyl groups endow hydrophobicity and thus limit the wetting section of the modified electrode. Cyclic voltammetry was exploited to investigate the dependence of electrochemical behavior on supporting electrolytes containing various cations. The chemically modified electrode can electrocatalytically oxidize L-cysteine, and exhibits a distinct advantage of polishing in the event of surface fouling, as well as simple preparation, good chemical and mechanical stability, and good repeatability of surface renewal.

The thickness of the gold film and its morphology, including the surface roughness, are very important for getting a good, reproducible response in the SPR technique. Here, we report a novel alternative approach for preparing SPR-active substrates that is completely solution-based. Our strategy is based on self-assembly of the gold colloid monolayer on a (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane-modified glass slide, followed by electroless gold plating. Using this method, the thickness of films can be easily controlled at the nanometer scale by setting the plating time in the same conditions. Surface roughness and morphology of gold films can be modified by both tuning the size of gold nanoparticles and agitation during the plating. Surface evolution of the Au film was followed in real time by UV-vis spectroscopy and in situ SPRS. To assess the surface roughness and electrochemical stability of the Au films, atomic force microscopy and cyclic voltammetry were used. In addition, the stability of the gold adhesion is demonstrated by three methods. The as-prepared Au films on substrates are reproducible and stable, which allows them to be used as electrodes for electrochemical experiments and as platforms for studying SAMs.

Cobalt(II) hexacyanoferrate (CoHCF) was deposited on graphite powder by an in situ chemical deposition procedure and then dispersed into methyltrimethoxysilane-derived gels to prepare a surface-renewable CoHCF-modified electrode. The electrochemical behavior of the modified electrode in different supporting electrolyte solutions was characterized by cyclic voltammetry. In addition, square-wave voltammetry was employed to investigate the pNa-dependent electrochemical behavior of the electrode. The CoHCF-modified electrode showed a high electrocatalytic activity toward thiosulfate oxidation and could thus be used as an amperometric thiosulfate sensor.

Graphite powder-supported nickel(II) hexacyanoferrate (NiHCF) was prepared by the in situ chemical deposition method and then dispersed into methyltrimethoxysilane-derived gels to form a conductive composite. The composite was used as electrode material to construct a surface-renewable three-dimensional NiHCF-modified carbon ceramic electrode. Electrochemical behavior of the chemically modified electrode was well characterized using cyclic and square-wave voltammetry. The electrode presented a good electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidization of thiosulfate and thus was used as an amperometric sensor for thiosulfate in the photographic waste effluent. In addition, the electrode exhibited a distinct advantage of surface-renewal by simple mechanical polishing, as well as simple preparation, good chemical and mechanical stability. An acid-stable soybean-peroxidase biosensor was devel oped by immobilizing the enzyme in a sol-gel thin film. Methylene blue was used as a mediator because of its high electron-transfer efficiency. The sol-gel thin film and enzyme membrane were characterized by FT-IR, and the effects of pH, operating potential, and temperature were explored for optimum analytical performance by using the amperometric method. The H2O2 sensor exhibited a fast response (5 s), high sensitivity (27.5 mu A/mM), as well as good thermostability and long-term stability. In addition, the performance of the biosensor was investigated using flow-injection analysis (FIA).

A new nickel (II)-cyanometallates modified on glassy carbon electrode was prepared by a new method and studied by cyclic voltammetry and in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroelectrochemistry. It was found that the NiHCF film existed in two forms: Ni2Fe(II)-(CN)(6) and M2NiFe(II)(CN)(6), Fe(CN)(3)(6-) codeposited in the NiHCF film existing in free cation or bridged-bond state depended on the property of the cations in electrolyte: in NaCl and LiCl solution, it is in bridges-bonded, but in HCl and KCl, it is free.

Plussian blue(PB)/Pt modified electrode Tvas studied in the CdCl2 electrolyte solution by cyclic voltammetry and in situ FTIR spectroelectrochemistry. It was found that Cadmium ion was capable of substituting the high-spin iron of PB in an electrochemically induced substitution reaction and hexacyanoferrate cadmium (CdHCF) can be formed in the PB film. But PB and CdHCF in mixture film showed their own electrochemistry properties without serious effect on each other. The mechanism of substitution reaction has been given in detail.

The film by tetraphenylporphyrin((TPP)H-2) vapor deposition on iron was investigated by means of XPS, SEM and visible spectroscopy. N(1s) binding energy characteristic of(TPP)H-2 was gained directly from the deposited samples. N(1s) binding energy of the surface was greatly changed after the deposited sample was washed with solvent. It is indicated that the deposited film is composed of an outer-layer of physically adsorbed (TPP)H-2, and an inner-layer of chemically modified (TPP)H-2.

A novel organic-inorganic composite film was formed by attaching Keegin-type heteropolyanion, SiW12O404- (devoted briefly as SiW12), on a glassy carbon electrode derivatized by 4-aminophenyl group. The composite film has an ionic bonding character between SiW12 and the surface amino group, which greatly improves the Blm stability and exhibits a more reversible electrochemical behavior. The modified electrode offers an excellent and stable electrocatalytic response for the reduction of nitrite. Possible mechanism was provided for the reaction of nitrite with SiW12O404-/aminophenyl composite film.

A novel poly(vinyl alcohol) grafting 4-vinylpyridine self-gelatinizable copolymer was adapted to immobilize glucose oxidase. The reduction of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was detected at a Prussian Blue (PB) modified graphite electrode. A stable and sensitive glucose amperometric biosensor is described. The copolymer is a good biocompatible polymer in which the glucose oxidase retains high activity. Moreover, the copolymer can adhere firmly to the inorganic PB membrane. The sensor showed an apparent Michaelis-Menten constant of 18 +/- 0.2 mM and a maximum current density of 1.14 mu A cm(-2) mM(-1). The linear range is from 5 mu M to 4.5 mM glucose and the detection limit is 0.5. mu M glucose. The catalytic efficiency of PB for the reduction of H2O2 is higher than that for the oxidation of H2O2. Glucose concentrations in serum samples from healthy persons and diabetic patients were determined using the sensor. The results compared well with those provided by the hospital using a spectroscopy method.

The electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol at the Titanium oxide (TiOx, x<2) film modified with Pt microparticles has been studied. The results show that the modified electrodes exhibit a significant electrocatalytic activity and good stability for the oxidation of methanol. Under the optimal conditions, the peak current density at 0.58 V for the oxidation of methanol in the positive-going sweep is about 526 mA/cm(2) at the scan rate of 5 mV/s in 0.5 mol/L CH3OH and 0.5 mol/L H2SO4 solution and the over potential of the methanol oxidation at the modified electrode increases about 30 similar to 40 mV after 70 minutes at the current density of 100 mA/cm(2) and 50 mA/cm(2). The enhanced electrocatalytic activity and good stability are ascribed to the high dispersion of Pt microparticles in and on the TiOx film and the synergistic effect between Pt microparticles and TiOx.

An electrode modified with a polybasic lanthanide heteropoly tungstate/molybdate complex K10H3[Nd(SiMo7W4O39)(2)] entrapped into polypyrrole (PPy) film, denoted as Nd(SiMo7W4)(2)-PPy, exhibits three couples of two-electron redox waves in pH 1-5 buffer solutions. The redox waves are surface-controlled at lower scan rates and diffusion-controlled at higher scan rates. The effects of pH on the electrochemical behavior of Nd(SiMo7W4)(2) in PPy film were investigated in detail and compared with that of Nd(SiMo7W4)(2) in aqueous solution. The various charge states of PPy during its redox process have peculiar effects on the relationship between pH and formal potentials of Nd(SiMo7W4)(2)-PPy at different acidities. The Nd(SiMo7W4)(2)-PPy cme can remarkably catalyze the electrochemical reduction of bromate with good stability. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
