Common factors in Latin America's business cycles

This paper constructs new business cycle indices for Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Mexico based on common dynamic factors extracted from a comprehensive set of sectoral output, external trade, fiscal and financial variables. The analysis spans the 135 years since the insertion of these economies into the global economy in the 1870s. The constructed indices are used to derive a business cyc1e chronology for these countries and characterize a set of new stylized facts. In particular, we show that ali four countries have historically displayed a striking combination of high business cyc1e volatility and persistence relative to advanced country benchmarks. Volatility changed considerably over time, however, being very high during early formative decades through the Great Depression, and again during the 1970s and ear1y 1980s, before declining sharply in three of the four countries. We also identify a sizeable common factor across the four economies which variance decompositions ascribe mostly to foreign interest rates and shocks to commodity terms of trade.

The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the actual nature of the Scientific Journalism, studying the historical facts from these informations segment, their matters production and the news industries that work with these specific niche of the contemporary journalism. It is taken into account the educational potential of the specialized journalism and it is considered the communication as a transdiciplinary science. To get into this point it was elected as an analyze category the Reception it Mediation Studies specially the north-americans theories besides the utilization also of the reportage concept to identify how to establish the epistemological relations between Communication and Education. Among the objectives of this dissertation are the investigation of the scientific character of the journalism; the analysis of the theoretical currents of Pedagogy that are based on the theory of Social Communication, as for example the Total Language and the analysis of the industrial and technological characteristics of the most important scientific and cultural magazines of Brazil, Northeast and Natal

Connection coefficients and zeros of orthogonal polynomials

We discuss an old theorem of Obrechkoff and some of its applications. Some curious historical facts around this theorem are presented. We make an attempt to look at some known results on connection coefficients, zeros and Wronskians of orthogonal polynomials from the perspective of Obrechkoff's theorem. Necessary conditions for the positivity of the connection coefficients of two families of orthogonal polynomials are provided. Inequalities between the kth zero of an orthogonal polynomial p(n)(x) and the largest (smallest) zero of another orthogonal polynomial q(n)(x) are given in terms of the signs of the connection coefficients of the families {p(n)(x)} and {q(n)(x)}, An inequality between the largest zeros of the Jacobi polynomials P-n((a,b)) (x) and P-n((alpha,beta)) (x) is also established. Antitumor properties of Ganoderma lucidum polysaccharides and terpenoids

Ganoderma lucidum is an edible medicinal mushroom with immunomodulatory and antitumor properties, which are mainly attributed to polysaccharides and triterpenes that can be isolated from mycelia, fruiting bodies and spores. G. lucidum has been us d in a powdered form, as a medicinal beverage and a nutraceutical food (usually dried). In the present review we report some historical facts and the experimental evidence that polysaccharides and triterpenes obtained from this mushroom present potential antitumor activity. Direct effects on tumor cells include induction of apoptosis and interference in the cell cycle, whereas indirect effects are based on the modulation of immune response, usually impaired by cancer cells. Data indicate that G. lucidum can be used as a complementary tool for treatment of cancer patients. © by São Paulo State University.
