A cerâmica do povo Paiter Suruí de Rondônia: continuidade e mudança cultural, 1970-2010

Esta pesquisa é o resultado de um trabalho de campo sobre um aspecto específico da cultura material dos índios Suruí de Rondônia, a cerâmica. A investigação se fez através de levantamento etnográfico, registro fotográfico e vídeo dos procedimentos utilizados por este povo para fabricar suas peças, verificando a localização da matéria-prima, procedimentos de extração deste material, possíveis temperos agregados a argila, técnicas de modelagem, queima, tratamento de superfície e função utilitária e ritualística das peças, com ênfase nas relações sociais envolvidas neste processo. Este estudo propôs-se também a recolher e documentar peças cerâmicas contemporâneas, com a finalidade de comparar a produção atual com as coleções Suruí dos anos 70 e 80 do século XX, do acervo particular da antropóloga Betty Mindlin, e de peças elaboradas em 2010 na aldeia Gãbgir, de modo a verificar, de um lado, a continuidade dos processos tecnológicos e de outro lado as mudanças culturais, em termos de morfologia, volume, acabamento de superfície, além de observar se fatos históricos como os contatos com os não indígenas influíram ou alteraram a produção cerâmica em relação aos processos de manufatura, implementos utilizados, técnicas empregadas, usos e interferências nas relações sociais

This paper proposes to do a field research about an specific feature of the Rondonian Suruí’s material culture, particularly the ceramic. The research is carried out through an ethnographic survey, electronic media (video) and photographic register of the procedures followed by this group in making its clay containers. This search also involves trying to investigate their methods in finding the raw material, the extraction of this material, the possible elements added to the clay, the modeling techniques and the firing process. Additionally It intends to verify the possible relations between the manufactured containers and the Suruí’s myths together with their ritualistic and/or utilitarian function, focusing on the social relations involved in this process. Moreover, This paper also intends to gather and document contemporary ceramic containers comparing the production of the last thirty years of the 20th century, to the anthropologist Betty Mindlin's private collection, as well as to the ceramic manufactured in Gãbgir settlement in 2010 in order to examine, on one hand, the continuity in the technological procedures and, on the other hand, the cultural changes in relation to the clay pieces morphology, volume, surface finishing, as well as observing if historical facts like the contact with the western society influenced or altered the ceramic production in relation to their manufacturing procedures, implements, morphology and techniques, usage and interferences in their social relations
