We propose a simple method to detect the relative strength of Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions in quantum wells (QWs) without relying on the directional-dependent physical quantities. This method utilizes the two different critical gate voltages that leading to the remarkable signals of SU(2) symmetry, which happens to reflect the intrinsic-structure-inversion asymmetry of the QW. We support our proposal by the numerical calculation of in-plane relaxation times based on the self-consistent eight-band Kane model. We find that the two different critical gate voltages leading to the maximum spin-relaxation times [one effect of the SU(2) symmetry] can simply determine the ratio of the coefficients of Rashba and Dresselhaus terms. Our proposal can also be generalized to extract the relative strengths of the spin-orbit interactions in quantum-wire and quantum-dot structures.

We theoretically investigate the electron transport and spin polarization of two coupled quantum wells with Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction. In analogy with the optical dual-channel directional coupler, the resonant tunneling effect is treated by the coupled-mode equations. We demonstrate that spin-up and -down electrons can be completely separated from each other for the system with an appropriate system geometry and a controllable barrier. Our result provides a new approach to construct spin-switching devices without containing any magnetic materials or applying a magnetic field. (C) 2008 American Institute of Physics. Coherence evolution and echo effect of an electron spin, which is coupled inhomogeneously to an interacting one-dimensional finite spin bath via hyperfine-type interaction, are studied using the adaptive time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group method. It is found that the interplay of the coupling inhomogeneity and the transverse intrabath interactions results in two qualitatively different coherence evolutions, namely, a coherence-preserving evolution characterized by periodic oscillation and a complete decoherence evolution. Correspondingly, the echo effects induced by an electron-spin flip at time tau exhibit stable recoherence pulse sequence for the periodic evolution and a single peak at root 2 tau for the decoherence evolution, respectively. With the diagonal intrabath interaction included, the specific feature of the periodic regime is kept, while the root 2 tau-type echo effect in the decoherence regime is significantly affected. To render the experimental verifications possible, the Hahn echo envelope as a function of tau is calculated, which eliminates the inhomogeneous broadening effect and serves for the identification of the different status of the dynamic coherence evolution, periodic versus decoherence.

Current fluctuations can provide additional insight into quantum transport in mesoscopic systems. The present work is carried out for the fluctuation properties of transport through a pair of coupled quantum dots which are connected with ferromagnetic electrodes. Based on an efficient particle-number-resolved master equation approach, we are concerned with not only fluctuations of the total charge and spin currents, but also of each individual spin-dependent component. As a result of competition among the spin polarization, Coulomb interaction, and dot-dot tunnel coupling, rich behaviors are found for the self- and mutual-correlation functions of the spin-dependent currents.

InGaN/GAN multiple quantum wells grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition were irradiated with the electron beam from a low energy accelerator. The electron irradiation induced a redshift by 50 meV in the photoluminescence spectra of the electron-irradiated InGaN/GaN quantum wells, irrespective of the exposure time to the electron beam which ranges from 10 to 1000s. The localization parameter extracted from the temperature-dependent photoluminescence spectra was found to increase in the Irradiated samples. Analysis of the intensity of the longitudinal optical phonon sidebands showed the enhancement of the exciton-phonon coupling, indicating that the excitons are more strongly localized in the irradiated InGaN wells. The change in the pholotuminescence spectra. In the irradiated InGa/GAN quantum wells were explained in terms of the increase of indium concentration in indium rich clusters induced by the electron irradiation (C) 2009 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

Starting from effective mass Hamiltonian, we systematically investigate the symmetry of low-dimensional structures with spin-orbit interaction and transverse magnetic field. The position-dependent potentials are assumed to be space symmetric, which is ever-present in theory and experiment research. By group theory, we analyze degeneracy in different cases. Spin-orbit interaction makes the transition between Zeeman sub-levels possible, which is originally forbidden within dipole approximation. However, a transition rule given in this paper for the first time shows that the transition between some levels is forbidden for space symmetric potentials. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. We study electron transport through an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer with a noninteracting quantum dot in each of its arms. Both a magnetic flux phi threading through the AB ring and the Rashba spin-orbit (SO) interaction inside the two dots are taken into account. Due to the existence of the SO interaction, the electrons flowing through different arms of the AB ring will acquire a spin-dependent phase factor in the tunnel-coupling strengths. This phase factor, as well as the influence of the magnetic flux, will induce various interesting interference phenomena. We show that the conductance and the local density of states can become spin polarized by tuning the magnetic flux and the Rashba interaction strength. Under certain circumstances, a pure spin-up or spin-down conductance can be obtained when a spin-unpolarized current is injected from the external leads. Therefore, the electron spin can be manipulated by adjusting the Rashba spin-orbit strength and the structure parameters. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

We have investigated the evolution of exciton state filling in InAs/GaAs quantum dot (QD) structures as a function of the excitation power density by using rnicro-photoluminescence spectroscopy at different temperatures. In addition to the emission bands of exciton recombination corresponding to the atom-like S, P and D, etc. shells of QDs, it was observed that some extra states V between the S and P shells, and D' between the P and D shells appear in the spectra with increasing number of excitons occupying the QDs at a certain temperature. The emergence of these inter-shell excitonic levels is power density and temperature dependent, which is an experimental demonstration of strong exciton-exciton exchange interaction, state hybridization, and coupling of a multi-exciton system in QDs. Parity (P)-odd domains, corresponding to nontrivial topological solutions of the QCD vacuum, might be created during relativistic heavy-ion collisions. These domains are predicted to lead to charge separation of quarks along the orbital momentum of the system created in noncentral collisions. To study this effect, we investigate a three-particle mixed-harmonics azimuthal correlator which is a P-even observable, but directly sensitive to the charge-separation effect. We report measurements of this observable using the STAR detector in Au + Au and Cu + Cu collisions at root s(NN) = 200 and 62 GeV. The results are presented as a function of collision centrality, particle separation in rapidity, and particle transverse momentum. A signal consistent with several of the theoretical expectations is detected in all four data sets. We compare our results to the predictions of existing event generators and discuss in detail possible contributions from other effects that are not related to P violation.

The momentum distributions of recoil ions were measured in the single ionization of neon by electron impact at incident energies between 80 and 2300 eV. It was found that there are a noticeable number of recoil ions carrying large momenta, and the relative contributions of these ions becomes more pronounced with the further decrease of incident electron energy. These observed behaviors indicate that there is a strong projectile-target-core interaction in the single-ionization reaction. By comparing our results with those of electron-neon elastic scattering, we concluded that the elastic scattering of the projectile electron on the target core plays an important role at low and intermediate collision energies.

The paper presents a theoretical study of the dynamics of the H + HCl system on the potential energy surface (PES) of Bian and Werner (Bian, W.; Werner, H. -J., J. Chem. Phys. 2000, 112, 220). A time-dependent wave packet approach was employed to calculate state-to-state reaction probabilities for the exchanged and abstraction channels. The most recent PES for the system has been used in the calculations. Reaction probabilities have also been calculated for several values of the total angular momentum J > 0. Those have then been used to estimate cross sections and rate constants for both channels. The calculated cross sections can be compared with the results of previous quasiclassical trajectory calculations and reaction dynamics experimental on the abstraction channel. In addition, the calculated rate constants are in the reasonably good agreement with experimental measurement.

Chitosan has shown its potential as a non-viral gene carrier and an adsorption enhancer for subsequent drug delivery to cells. These results showed that chitosan acted as a membrane perturbant. However, there is currently a lack of direct experimental evidence of this membrane perturbance effect, especially for chitosans with low molecular weight (LMW). In this report, the interaction between a lipid (didodecyl dimethylammonium bromide; DDAB) bilayer and chitosan with molecular weight (MW) of 4200 Da was studied with cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and surface plasmon resonance (SPR). A lipid bilayer was formed by-fusion of oppositely charged lipid vesicles on a mercaptopropionic acid (MPA)-modified gold surface to mimic a cell membrane. The results showed that the LMW chitosan could disrupt the lipid bilayer, and the effect seemed,to be in a concentration-dependent manner.

By fitting the spinodals of poly(vinyl methyl ether)/deuterated polystyrene (PVME/PSD) systems, the adjustable parameters epsilon (12)* and delta epsilon* in the Sanchez-Balasz lattice fluid (SBLF) theory could be determined for different molecular weights. According to these parameters, Flory-Huggins and scattering interaction parameters were calculated for PVME/PSD with different molecular weights by means of the SELF theory. From our calculation, Flory-Huggins and scattering interaction parameters are both Linearly dependent on the reciprocal of the temperature, and almost linearly on the concentration of PSD. Compared with the scattering interaction parameters, the Flory-Huggins interaction parameters decreased more slowly with an increase in the concentration for all three series of blends.

In situ electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy, alternating current voltammetry, and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance have been employed to follow the potential-dependent adsorption/desorption processes of nucleic acid bases on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) electrode. The results show that (i) potential-dependent adsorption/desorption of nucleic acid bases on HOPG electrode was accompanied by delamination of the HOPG surface, and the delamination initiates from steps or kinks on the electrode surface, which provide highly active sites for adsorption; (ii) the delamination usually occurred when the electrode potential was changed or when the electrode was at potentials where the phase transition of adsorbate occurred. These results suggest that the surface stress resulting from the interaction between the substrate and adsorbate, as well as the interaction due to potential-induced surface charge distribution and the hysteresis of charge equilibrium are the main factors resulting in HOPG delamination.
