The endocannabinoid anandamide, in addition to activating cannabinoid type 1 receptors (CB1), may act as an agonist at transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1) channels. In the periaqueductal gray, CB1 activation inhibits, whereas TRPV1 increases, anxiety-like behavior. In the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), another brain region related to defensive responses, CB1 activation induces anxiolytic-like effects. However, a possible involvement of TRPV1 is still unclear. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that TRPV1 channel contributes to the modulation of anxiety-like behavior in the mPFC. Male Wistar rats (n = 5-7 per group) received microinjections of the TRPV1 antagonist capsazepine (1-60 nmol) in the ventral portion of the mPFC and were exposed to the elevated plus maze (EPM) or to the Vogel conflict test. Capsazepine increased exploration of open arms in the EPM as well as the number of punished licks in the Vogel conflict test, suggesting anxiolytic-like effects. No changes in the number of entries into the enclosed arms were observed in the EPM, indicating that there were no changes in motor activity. Moreover, capsazepine did not interfere with water consumption or nociceptive threshold, discarding potential confounding factors for the Vogel conflict test. These data suggest that TRPV1 in the ventral mPFC tonically inhibits anxiety-like behavior. TRPV1 could facilitate defensive responses opposing, therefore, the anxiolytic-like effects reported after local activation of CB1 receptors.

The lateral part of intermediate layer of superior colliculus (SCI) is a critical substrate for successful predation by rats. Hunting-evoked expression of the activity marker Fos is concentrated in SCI while prey capture in rats with NMDA lesions in SCI is impaired. Particularly affected are rapid orienting and stereotyped sequences of actions associated with predation of fast moving prey. Such deficits are consistent with the view that the deep layers of SC are important for sensory guidance of movement. Although much of the relevant evidence involves visual control of movement, less is known about movement guidance by somatosensory input from vibrissae. Indeed, our impression is that prey contact with whiskers is a likely stimulus to trigger predation. Moreover, SCI receives whisker and orofacial somatosensory information directly from trigeminal complex, and indirectly from zona incerta, parvicelular reticular formation and somatosensory barrel cortex. To better understand sensory guidance of predation by vibrissal information we investigated prey capture by rats after whisker removal and the role of superior colliculus (SC) by comparing Fos expression after hunting with and without whiskers. Rats were allowed to hunt cockroaches, after which their whiskers were removed. Two days later they were allowed to hunt cockroaches again. Without whiskers the rats were less able to retain the cockroaches after capture and less able to pursue them in the event of the cockroach escaping. The predatory behaviour of rats with re-grown whiskers returned to normal. In parallel, Fos expression in SCI induced by predation was significantly reduced in whiskerless animals. We conclude that whiskers contribute to the efficiency of rat prey capture and that the loss of vibrissal input to SCI, as reflected by reduced Fos expression, could play a critical role in predatory deficits of whiskerless rats. Tonic immobility (TI) is an innate defensive behaviour elicited by physical restriction and Postural inversion, and is characterised by a profound and temporary state of akinesis. Our previous studies demonstrated that glutamatergic stimulation of the dorsomedial/dorsolateral Portion of periaqueductal gray matter (dPAG) decreases the duration of TI in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus). Furthermore, evidence suggests that the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) constitutes an important Source of glutamate for the dPAG. Hence, in the current study, we investigated the effects of microinjection of the excitatory amino acid (EAA) agonist DL-homocysteic acid (DLH) and the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist MK-801 into the ACC on the duration of TI in guinea pigs. We also assessed the effect of the NMDA receptor antagonist (MK-801) into the dorsal periaqueductal gray matter (dPAG) prior to DLH microinjection into the ACC on the TI duration in the guinea pig. Our results demonstrated that DLH microinjections into the ACC decreased the duration of TI. This effect was blocked by previous MK-801 microinjections into the ACC or into the dPAG. The MK-801 microinjections alone did not influence TI duration. These results provide the new insight that EAAs in the ACC can decrease the duration of TI. The mechanism seems to be dependent on the NMDA receptors present in the ACC and in the dPAG. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Tonic immobility (TI) is an innate defensive behavior characterized by a state of physical inactivity and diminished responsiveness to environmental stimuli. Behavioral adaptations to changes in the external and internal milieu involve complex neuronal network activity and a large number of chemical neurotransmitters. The TI response is thought to be influenced by serotonin (5-HT) activity in the central nervous system (CNS) of vertebrates, but the neuronal groups involved in the mechanisms underlying this behavior are poorly understood. Owing to its extensive afferents and efferents, the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) has been implicated in a great variety of physiological and behavioral functions. in the current study, we investigated the influence of serotonergic 5-HT(1A) and 5-HT(2) receptor activity within the DRN on the modulation of TI behavior in the guinea pig. Microinjection of a 5-HT(1A) receptor agonist (8-OH-DPAT, 0.01 and 0.1 mu g) decreased TI behavior, an effect blocked by pretreatment with WAY-100635 (0.033 mu g), a 5-HT(1A) antagonist. In contrast, activation of 5-HT(2) receptors within the DRN (alpha-methyl-5-HT, 0.5 mu g) increased the TI duration, and this effect could be reversed by pretreatment with an ineffective dose (0.01 mu g) of ketanserine. Since the 5-HT(1A) and 5-HT(2) agonists decreased and increased, respectively, the duration of TI, different serotonin receptor subtypes may play distinct roles in the modulation of TI in the guinea pig. Tonic immobility (TI) is an innate defensive behavior elicited by physical restriction and postural inversion, and is characterized by a profound and temporary state of motor inhibition. The participation of the periaqueductal gray matter (PAG) in TI modulation has previously been described. In addition, the excitatory amino acids (EAA) are important mediators involved in the adjustment of several defensive responses produced by PAG. In the present study, we investigated the effect of microinjection of the EAA agonist DL-homocysteic acid (DLH) and the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist (MK-801) into the ventrolateral and dorsal PAG over the duration of TI in guinea pigs. Microinjection of 15 nmol/0.2 mu l of DLH into the ventrolateral PAG (vlPAG) and 30 nmol/0.2 mu l of DLH into the dorsal PAG (dPAG) promoted an increase and decrease in TI duration, respectively. These responses were blocked by prior microinjection of the NMDA receptor antagonist, MK-801 (3.6 nmol/0.2 mu l) at the same site. Microinjection of MK-801 alone into the APAG and dPAG did not alter the duration of TI episodes. These results suggest that NMDA receptors are involved in the modulation of TI in both the vlPAG and dPAG. In addition, PAC excitatory amino acids modulate the TI response via columnar organization of the PAC. In this manner, the vlPAG facilitates TI modulation whereas dPAG has an inhibitory role in TI. Tonic immobility behavior (TI) is an innate response characterized by profound motor inhibition that is exhibited by prey when physical contact with a predator is prolonged and the situation inescapable. The periaqueductal gray matter (PAG) is intimately associated with the somatic and autonomic components of defensive reactions. This study investigated whether the TI response was able to recruit specific functional columns of the PAG by examining c-fos immunolocalization in guinea pigs. In the TI group, the innate response was invoked in animals through inversion and physical contention for at least 15 min. In the control group, the animals were physically manipulated only. Our results demonstrate that the defensive behavior of TI is capable of promoting the expression of Fos protein in different areas of the PAG, with higher levels of staining in the ventrolateral (vI) and lateral (I) columns. In addition, our results demonstrate increased Fos immunoreactivity (FOS-IR) in the dorsal raphe nucleus, the Edinger-Westphal nucleus, the cuneiform nucleus and the superior colliculus. In contrast, there were no significant alterations in the number of FOS-IR cells in the inferior colliculus or the oculomotor nucleus. Analysis of the results suggests that neuronal activation after the TI response differs by functional column of the PAG. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ancient mitochondrial DNA sequences were used for investigating the evolution of an entire clade of extinct vertebrates, the endemic tortoises (Cylindraspis) of the Mascarene Islands in the Indian Ocean. Mitochondrial DNA corroborates morphological evidence that there were five species of tortoise with the following relationships: Cylindraspis triserrata ((Cylindraspis vosmaeri and Cylindraspis peltastes) (Cylindraspis inepta and Cylindraspis indica)). Phylogeny indicates that the ancestor of the group first colonized Mauritius where speciation produced C. triserrata and the ancestor of the other species including a second sympatric Mauritian form, C. inepta. A propagule derived from this lineage colonized Rodrigues 590 km to the east, where a second within-island speciation took place producing the sympatric C. vosmaeri and C. peltastes. A recent colonization of Réunion 150 km to the southwest produced C. indica. In the virtual absence of predators, the defensive features of the shells of Mascarene tortoises were largely dismantled, apparently in two stages. 'Saddlebacked' shells with high fronts evolved independently on all three islands. This and other features, such as a derived jaw structure and small body size, may be associated with niche differentiation in sympatric species and may represent a striking example of parallel differentiation in a large terrestrial vertebrate. The history of Mascarene tortoises contrasts with that of the Galápagos, where only a single species is present and surviving populations are genetically much more similar. However, they too show some reduction in anti-predator mechanisms and multiple development of populations with saddlebacked shells.

Whereas terrestrial animal populations might show genetic connectivity within a continent, marine species, such as hermatypic corals, may have connectivity stretching to all corners of the planet. We quantified the genetic variability within and among populations of the widespread scleractinian coral, Plesiastrea versipora along the eastern Australian seaboard (4145 km) and the Ryukyu Archipelago (Japan, 681 km) using sequences of internal transcribed spacers (ITS1-2) from ribosomal DNA. Geographic patterns in genetic variability were deduced from a nested clade analysis (NCA) performed on a parsimony network haplotype. This analysis allowed the establishment of geographical associations in the distribution of haplotypes within the network cladogram, therefore allowing us to deduce phylogeographical patterns based under models of restricted gene flow, fragmentation and range expansion. No significant structure was found among Ryukyu Archipelago populations. The lack of an association between the positions of haplotypes in the cladogram with geographical location of these populations may be accounted for by a high level of gene flow of P. versipora within this region, probably due to the strong Kuroshio Current. In contrast, strong geographical associations were apparent among populations of P. versipora along the south-east coast of Australia. This pattern of restricted genetic connectivity among populations of P. versipora on the eastern seaboard of Australia seems to be associated with the present surface ocean current (the East Australian Current) on this side of the south-western Pacific Ocean.

Este paper defende duas id??ias. A primeira, ?? apresentar os diferentes processos da reforma do Estado mexicano, analisados sob as prioridades diversas no decorrer do tempo. As reformas econ??mica, pol??tica, social e administrativa tiveram prioridades e objetivos divergentes.

In this article we aim to identify and analyze a set of variables related to the organizational and environ-mental strategy that can potentially influence the adoption of the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) in Portuguesecompanies of different sizes. Hypotheses were tested using data obtained from a questionnaire sent to549 privately-owned Portuguese organizations (small and medium enterprises and large companies),with an overall response rate of 28.2%. The results allow us to conclude that the BSC is independent ofthe activity/industry in which the organization operates. Furthermore, we have found that organizationsthat follow a defensive strategy attach greater importance to the BSC financial perspective or equiva-lent. On the other hand, we did not find empirical evidence regarding the possible relationship betweenthe BSC, the type of strategy adopted by the organization, the phase/stage of the life cycle in which theorganization is located, and the environmental intensity competition.

ABSTRACTSocially oriented ventures have provided livelihoods and social recognition to disadvantaged communities in different corners of the world. In some cases, these ventures are the result of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs. In Latin America, this type of undertaking has responded positively to unmet social needs. The social cause drives these organizations and their human resources and they give high value to organizational cause-fit. This paper presents empirical evidence of the effects of perceived cause-fit on several worker attitudes and behaviors. Psychological contract theory was adopted as theoretical background. Employees working in a hybrid (for-profit/socially oriented) Colombian organization created by a CSR program participated in the survey. Data provided by 218 employees were analyzed using PLS structural equation modeling. The results suggest the ideological components of the employee-employer relationship predict positive attitudes and cooperative organizational behaviors towards hybrid organizations.

In sport there is a great need to obtain as much information as possible about the factors which affect the dynamics of play. This study uses sequential analysis and temporal patterns (T-patterns)to examine the evolution of defence (against an equal number of attackers)as used by the Spanish handball team at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. The aim is to help handball coaches (during their training and gathering of professional experience)to understand the importance of the structure of defensive systems. This can be achieved through observational processes that reveal the evolution and adaptation of these defensive systems according to different variables: the match score, the response of the opposing team and progress through the tournament.

In team sports, the spatial distribution of players on the field is determined by the interaction behavior established at both player and team levels. The distribution patterns observed during a game emerge from specific technical and tactical methods adopted by the teams, and from individual, environmental and task constraints that influence players' behaviour. By understanding how specific patterns of spatial interaction are formed, one can characterize the behavior of the respective teams and players. Thus, in the present work we suggest a novel spatial method for describing teams' spatial interaction behaviour, which results from superimposing the Voronoi diagrams of two competing teams. We considered theoretical patterns of spatial distribution in a well-defined scenario (5 vs 4+ GK played in a field of 20x20m) in order to generate reference values of the variables derived from the superimposed Voronoi diagrams (SVD). These variables were tested in a formal application to empirical data collected from 19 Futsal trials with identical playing settings. Results suggest that it is possible to identify a number of characteristics that can be used to describe players' spatial behavior at different levels, namely the defensive methods adopted by the players.
