According to life-history theory, individuals optimize their decisions in order to maximize their fitness. This raises a conflict between parents, which need to cooperate to ensure the propagation of their genes but at the same time need to minimize the associated costs. Trading-off between benefits and costs of a reproduction is one of the major forces driving demographic trends and has shaped several different parental care strategies. Using little penguins (Eudyptula minor) as a model, we investigated whether individuals of a pair provide equal parental effort when raising offspring and whether their behavior was consistent over 8 years of contrasting resource availability. Using an automated identification system, we found that 72% of little penguin pairs exhibited unforced (i.e., that did not result from desertion of 1 parent) unequal partnership through the postguard stage. This proportion was lower in favorable years. Although being an equal pair appeared to be a better strategy, it was nonetheless the least often observed. Individuals that contributed less than their partner were not less experienced (measured by age), and gender did not explain differences between partners. Furthermore, birds that contributed little or that contributed a lot tended to be consistent in their level of contribution across years. We suggest that unequal effort during breeding may reflect differences in individual quality, and we encourage future studies on parental care to consider this consistent low and high contributor behavior when investigating differences in pair investment into its offspring. Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) is a method for the systematic analysis of cases. A holistic view of cases and an approach to causality emphasizing complexity are some of its core features. Over the last decades, QCA has found application in many fields of the social sciences. In spite of this, its use in feminist research has been slower, and only recently QCA has been applied to topics related to social care, the political representation of women, and reproductive politics. In spite of the comparative turn in feminist studies, researchers still privilege qualitative methods, in particular case studies, and are often skeptical of quantitative techniques (Spierings 2012). These studies show that the meaning and measurement of many gender concepts differ across countries and that the factors leading to feminist success and failure are context specific. However, case study analyses struggle to systematically account for the ways in which these forces operate in different locations.

PURPOSE: To analyze the outcomes of intracorneal ring segment (ICRS) implantation for the treatment of keratoconus based on preoperative visual impairment. DESIGN: Multicenter, retrospective, nonrandomized study. METHODS: A total of 611 eyes of 361 keratoconic patients were evaluated. Subjects were classified according to their preoperative corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) into 5 different groups: grade I, CDVA of 0.90 or better; grade II, CDVA equal to or better than 0.60 and worse than 0.90; grade III, CDVA equal to or better than 0.40 and worse than 0.60; grade IV, CDVA equal to or better than 0.20 and worse than 0.40; and grade plus, CDVA worse than 0.20. Success and failure indices were defined based on visual, refractive, corneal topographic, and aberrometric data and evaluated in each group 6 months after ICRS implantation. RESULTS: Significant improvement after the procedure was observed regarding uncorrected distance visual acuity in all grades (P < .05). CDVA significantly decreased in grade I (P < .01) but significantly increased in all other grades (P < .05). A total of 37.9% of patients with preoperative CDVA 0.6 or better gained 1 or more lines of CDVA, whereas 82.8% of patients with preoperative CDVA 0.4 or worse gained 1 or more lines of CDVA (P < .01). Spherical equivalent and keratometry readings showed a significant reduction in all grades (P ≤ .02). Corneal higher-order aberrations did not change after the procedure (P ≥ .05). CONCLUSIONS: Based on preoperative visual impairment, ICRS implantation provides significantly better results in patients with a severe form of the disease. A notable loss of CDVA lines can be expected in patients with a milder form of keratoconus.

Most online assessment systems now incorporate social networking features, and recent developments in social media spaces include protocols that allow the synchronisation and aggregation of data across multiple user profiles. In light of these advances and the concomitant fear of data sharing in secondary school education this papers provides important research findings about generic features of online social networking, which educators can use to make sound and efficient assessments in collaboration with their students and colleagues. This paper reports on a design experiment in flexible educational settings that challenges the dichotomous legacy of success and failure evident in many assessment activities for at-risk youth. Combining social networking practices with the sociology of education the paper proposes that assessment activities are best understood as a negotiable field of exchange. In this design experiment students, peers and educators engage in explicit, "front-end" assessment (Wyatt-Smith, 2008) to translate digital artefacts into institutional, and potentiality economic capital without continually referring to paper based pre-set criteria. This approach invites students and educators to use social networking functions to assess “work in progress” and final submissions in collaboration, and in doing so assessors refine their evaluative expertise and negotiate the value of student’s work from which new criteria can emerge. The mobile advantages of web-based technologies aggregate, externalise and democratise this transparent assessment model for most, if not all, student work that can be digitally represented.

In the global knowledge economy, knowledge-intensive industries and knowledge workers are extensively seen as the primary factors to improve the welfare and competitiveness of cities. To attract and retain such industries and workers, cities produce knowledge-based urban development strategies, and therefore such strategising has become an important development mechanism for cities and their economies. The paper discusses the critical connections between knowledge city foundations and integrated knowledge-based urban development mechanisms in both the local and regional level. In particular, the paper investigates Brisbane’s knowledge-based urban development strategies that support gentrification, attraction, and retention of investment and talent. Furthermore, the paper develops a knowledge-based urban development assessment framework to provide a clearer understanding of the local and regional policy frameworks, and relevant applications of Brisbane’s knowledge-based urban development experience, in becoming a prosperous knowledge city. The paper, with its knowledge-based urban development assessment framework, scrutinises Brisbane’s four development domains in detail: economy; society; institutional; built and natural environments. As part of the discussion of the case study findings, the paper describes the global orientation of Brisbane within the frame of regional and local level knowledge-based urban development strategies performing well. Although several good practices from Brisbane have already been internationally acknowledged, the research reveals that Brisbane is still in the early stages of its knowledge-based urban development implementation. Consequently, the development of a monitoring system for all knowledge-based urban development at all levels is highly crucial in accurately measuring the success and failure of specific knowledge-based urban development policies, and Brisbane’s progress towards a knowledge city transformation.

It is more that 20 years since the “Social Control of the Drink Driver” edited by Laurence, Snortum and Zimring (1988) were published. It was, and remains a major examination of the issue involving 17 scientists from all relevant disciplines and policy centres and represents the current practice and experience at the time. While much of, but by no means all, the content is centred on the North American experience the scholarship and range of research data explored through the investigative lens of lawyers, pharmacologists, psychologists, sociologists, criminologists and economists covers all the major issues being examined in Europe, and Australia at the time. More importantly, it presents the policy aspirations and goals of nine countries and includes a comparison of deterrence and the legal context in six countries; emerging technologies for control and the potential contributions of education and rehabilitation. The experience of promoting evidence based policies and practices are generally experienced in all countries as both laborious and painfully slow. However, this ICADTS meeting in Norway provides an opportunity to challenge these feelings by re-examining the current situation compared with that documented over 20yrs ago. This presentation will undertake a reality check on just what we have achieved within that time and try to attribute success and failure towards recommendations for our future endeavours.

Morris' (1986) analysis of the factors affecting project success and failure is considered in relation to the psychology of judgement under uncertainty. A model is proposed whereby project managers may identify the specific circumstances in which human decision-making is prone to systematic error, and hence may apply a number of de-biasing techniques.

The nursing literature suggests that talking and listening to patients about issues associated with death and dying, is both important and difficult, and may be improved with training. This discussion presents the results of recent nursing research to confirm, and elaborate on, this theme. In this research participants touched on many central issues in communicating with patients that included articulating a sense of discomfort and inadequacy about the whole process, detailing the innumerable blocks to open communication [e.g., interference, denial, unrealistic optimism, resistance, collusion and anger] and sharing their sense of success and failure. The insights of nurses who participated in this research testify to the ongoing need to prioritize the development of nursing skills and support in this challenging but important area.

Demixing is the task of identifying multiple signals given only their sum and prior information about their structures. Examples of demixing problems include (i) separating a signal that is sparse with respect to one basis from a signal that is sparse with respect to a second basis; (ii) decomposing an observed matrix into low-rank and sparse components; and (iii) identifying a binary codeword with impulsive corruptions. This thesis describes and analyzes a convex optimization framework for solving an array of demixing problems.
Our framework includes a random orientation model for the constituent signals that ensures the structures are incoherent. This work introduces a summary parameter, the statistical dimension, that reflects the intrinsic complexity of a signal. The main result indicates that the difficulty of demixing under this random model depends only on the total complexity of the constituent signals involved: demixing succeeds with high probability when the sum of the complexities is less than the ambient dimension; otherwise, it fails with high probability.
The fact that a phase transition between success and failure occurs in demixing is a consequence of a new inequality in conic integral geometry. Roughly speaking, this inequality asserts that a convex cone behaves like a subspace whose dimension is equal to the statistical dimension of the cone. When combined with a geometric optimality condition for demixing, this inequality provides precise quantitative information about the phase transition, including the location and width of the transition region.

O presente estudo traz como lócus central de interesse apreender as percepções que alunos formandos do ensino médio de uma escola estadual do município do Rio de Janeiro, possuem sobre suas chances de terem ascensão educacional, via ingresso no ensino superior, focalizando, em especial, como percebem as contribuições da escola e da classe social a que pertencem nesse processo. O estudo foi realizado apenas durante o turno da manhã, utilizando-se de aporte teórico-metodológico ancorado nas pesquisas sobre os efeitos das escolas, campo de estudo que se iniciou fora do Brasil, e que recentemente tem experimentado mais entrada no campo educacional brasileiro. Esta pesquisa congregou o uso das metodologias quantitativa e qualitativa, com aplicação de questionários estruturados a todos os alunos formandos, bem como buscou conhecer mais das expectativas destes estudantes, através de entrevistas semi-estruturadas realizadas com dois alunos de cada turma. Estudos apontam que, ainda que os fatores extra-escolares, especialmente aqueles relacionados às condições socioeconômicas dos indivíduos, exerçam forte influência sobre o desempenho escolar dos alunos, sobre suas trajetórias escolares, e, posteriormente, sobre suas trajetórias profissionais, outros trabalhos vêm sugerindo que há mais elementos que precisam ser introduzidos na análise, elementos estes que dizem respeito a aspectos relacionados à própria escola, que se convencionou chamar no Brasil como efeitos das escolas, ou simplesmente, efeito-escola. Acredita-se, segundo esta perspectiva de análise, que as escolas podem vir a afetar as trajetórias dos alunos, assim como suas expectativas de vida e suas motivações, embaralhando a influência dos fatores socioeconômicos, que, ainda que presentes, não seriam os únicos condicionantes. Estas pesquisas revelam que, depois de controladas as variáveis concernentes às condições socioeconômicas dos indivíduos, os dados sugeririam que as escolas exerceriam influência sobre o desempenho dos alunos, em maior ou menor grau, com maior ou menor êxito, mostrando que as escolas podem fazer diferença, e que não são apenas os fatores extra-escolares os únicos determinantes para o sucesso e insucesso escolar dos indivíduos.

Os desequilíbrios na escala de capacidades militares, econômicas, tecnológicas, de território e população entre Estados formalmente soberanos configuram um sistema internacional de relações assimétricas que pressupõe desafios relativamente maiores para as políticas externas dos países periféricos. Entretanto, em contextos de assimetria em uma relação bilateral, é possível constatar que a parte fraca pode, sob certas condições, sustentar com sucesso preferências divergentes das formuladas pela contraparte mais forte. Esta é uma pesquisa histórica comparativa que, através da comparação entre casos de divergência e crise na história das relações bilaterais do Brasil e do México frente aos Estados Unidos, se propõe a indagar que condições permitem a sustentação das preferências formuladas pelos governantes da parte mais fraca de uma díade assimétrica. Uma afirmação central desta pesquisa postula que variáveis de política doméstica devem ser levadas em conta para explicar o sucesso da parte fraca, em particular, a formação de coalizões de apoio à política externa amplas, plurais e heterogêneas. A comparação inclui casos de sucesso e insucesso na sustentação de preferências formuladas pelos governos do Brasil e do México, de forma a avaliar a presença ou ausência desse tipo de coalizão em cada conjuntura. A partir da consulta de estudos prévios, jornais e revistas publicadas nas respectivas épocas, arquivos diplomáticos e documentos oficiais, foi possível mapear o omportamento de atores relevantes para a política externa em cada caso e avaliar sua adesão ou não às preferências postuladas pelos responsáveis da condução da política externa. A inclusão na análise de duas conjunturas de alinhamento dos governantes do Brasil e do México com as preferências de Washington permitiu afirmar a importância do apoio interno para a sustentação de preferências capazes de gerar clivagens muito intensas no âmbito das relações do Brasil e do México frente aos Estados Unidos.
