Mesopelagic fish were collected using a 1 m**2 Double-MOCNESS (Multiple Opening and Closing Net and Environmental Sensing System) and 4.5 m**2 IKMT (Isaacs-Kidd midwater trawl). The main portion of the IKMT was 20 mm knotted nylon, and the tail bag was 3 mm knotless nylon. Oblique IKMT tows were made to a maximum depth of 500 m at a tow speed of 3.5 knots. The original cruise plan intended for nighttime IKMT tows, but tow times varied due to operational constraints. The MOCNESS was equipped with 20 nets of 333 µm mesh size; 10 nets per side. The towing speed was 2 knots. Samples were collected to a maximum depth of 1250 m. The first oblique nets sampled from the surface to the max depth, and the other nets sampled depth stratified bins of the water column. MOCNESS hauls were performed during day and night to investigate diel vertical migrations. Mesoplelagic fish were processed on board. All fish were picked from all IKMT nets, most oblique MOCNESS nets, and the left side nets of the depth stratified MOCNESS samples. The Depth stratified nets from the right side of the MOCNESS frame were preserved in 5 % formalin for future quantitative analyses of the nekton. Fish were identified to the lowest possible taxa using Whitehead et al. (1984) and Fahay (2007). Standard length of each fish was measured to the nearest 0.1 mm using a digital caliper. Measured and identified fish were frozen in an -80 °C freezer, and shipped to the University of Hamburg at the end of the cruise.

RV POSEIDON cruise POS264 was carried out by the Institut für Meereskunde of the University of Hamburg and staff from the Niels Bohr Instituttet for Astronomi, Fysik og Geofysik of the University of Copenhagen also participated. The cruise had several objectives: - to educate undergraduate students in the handling of oceanographic instrumentation and in the collection and analysis of field data, - to map the cold overflow through the Faroe-Bank Channel from the Norwegian Sea into the Icelandic Basin and to study its short-time variability and - to quantify the contributions of the water masses which are involved in the mixing of the overflow plume with its ambient water. The planning and preparation of the cruise involved the participating students and was carried out during seminars, both at the Universities of Hamburg and Copenhagen. Following a review of the recent literature and an analysis of historical data the observational programme was designed. Hydrographic and current profiling stations were occupied along several sections crossing the overflow. The experiment was financed by the University of Hamburg. Temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen data from CTD stations are presented. The temperature and salinity data were quality controlled and calibrated. Oxygen data are not calibrated as no oxygen samples were taken additionally during the cruise.

We used a novel system of three continuous wave Doppler radars to successfully record the directivity of i) Strombolian explosions from the active lava lake of Erebus volcano, Antarctica, ii) eruptions at Stromboli volcano, Italy, and iii) a man-made explosion in a quarry. Erebus volcano contains a convecting phonolite lava lake, presumably connected to a magma chamber at depth. It is one of the few open vent volcanoes that allow a direct observation of source processes during explosions. Its lava lake is the source of frequent violent Strombolian explosions, caused by large gas bubbles bursting at the lake surface. The exact mechanism of these bubble bursts is unclear, as is the mechanism of the creation of the infrasound signal accompanying the explosions. We use the Doppler radar data to calculate the directivity of Strombolian eruptions at Erebus. This allows us to derive information about the expected type of infrasound source pattern (i.e. the role of a dipole in addition to the monopole signature) and the physical structure of the volcano. We recorded 10 large explosions simultaneously with three radars, enabling us to calculate time series of 3D directivity vectors (i.e. effectively 4D), which describe the direction of preferred expansion of the gas bubble during an explosion. Such directivity information allows a comparison to dipole infrasound radiation patterns recorded during similar explosions only a few weeks later. Video observations of explosions support our interpretation of the measurements. We conclude that at Erebus, the directivity of explosions is mainly controlled by random processes. Since the geometry of the uppermost conduit is assumed to have a large effect on the directivity of explosions, the results suggest a largely symmetrical uppermost conduit with a vertical axis of symmetry. For infrasound recordings, a significant dipole signature can be expected in addition to the predominant monopole signature.
