A damage detection and imaging methodology based on symmetry of neighborhood sensor path and similarity of signal patterns with respect to radial paths in a circular array of sensors has been developed It uses information regarding Limb wave propagation along with a triangulation scheme to rapidly locate and quantify the severity of damage without using all of the sensor data. In a plate like structure, such a scheme can be effectively employed besides full field imaging of wave scattering pattern from the damage, if present in the plate. This new scheme is validated experimentally. Hole and corrosion type damages have been detected and quantified using the proposed scheme successfully. A wavelet based cumulative damage index has been studied which shows monotonic sensitivity against the severity of the damage. which is most desired in a Structural Health Monitoring system. A sensitive and rapid bioassay of inhibin is described. Swiss albino female mice, 27 days old, weighing 25-30 g, were primed with 20 IU hCG, given in 2 equal doses, administered at 0900 h and 1800 h. An increment of 200% in uterine weight could be observed when the animals were autopsied the next day at 1000 h. The validity of the endpoint chosen, as a function dependent on FSH, was shown by the fact that neutralization of endogenous FSH by FSH antiserum led to an inhibition of uterine weight increase. Further injection of the inhibin material caused an actual reduction in the heightened levels of FSH (ng/ml) brought about by hCG: Control, 207 ± 13.6; hCG, 365 ± 28.8 and hCG inhibin, below the detection level of radioimmunoassay. Inhibin preparation from ovine testicular extract when tested at 3 dose levels showed a dose dependent and significant suppression in uterine weight increase. The assay was statistically validε = 2.5; slope = 23.9; λ = 0.104 and intra- and interassay variation = 8.3% and 11.7%, respectively. Since the mouse uterine weight assay is specific, has greater sensitivity and is uniformly reproducible, it is suggested that this assay procedure is ideally suited to assess the activity of different inhibin test preparations as well as to follow the purification of inhibin activity from crude material.

We report the rapid solution combustion synthesis and characterization of Ag-substituted LaMnO3 phases at relatively low temperature using oxalyl dihydrazide, as fuel. Structural parameters were refined by the Rietveld method using powder X-ray diffraction data. While the parent LaMnO3 crystallizes in the orthorhombic structure, the Ag-substituted compounds crystallize in the rhombohedral symmetry. On increasing Ag-content, unit cell volume and Mn-O-Mn bond angle decreases. The Fourier transform infra red spectrum shows two absorption bands corresponding to Mn-O stretching vibration (v(s) mode) and Mn-O-Mn deformation vibration (v(b) mode) around 600 cm(-1) and 400 cm(-1) for the compositions x = 0.0, 0.05 and 0.10, respectively. Electrical resistivity measurements reveal that composition-controlled metal to insulator transition, with the maximum metal to insulator being 280 K for the composition La0.75Ag0.25MnO3. Increase in magnetic moment was observed with increase in Ag-content. The maximum magnetic moment of 35 emu/g was observed for the composition La0.80Ag0.20MnO3. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. The identification of small molecules that affect T cell activation is an important area of research. Three molecules that regulate plant growth and differentiation, but not their structurally similar analogs, were identified to enhance primary mouse CD4(+) T cell activation in conjunction with soluble anti-CD3 stimulation: Indoleacetic acid (natural plant auxin), 1-Napthaleneacetic acid (synthetic plant auxin) and 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (synthetic plant auxin and herbicide). These effects are distinct in comparison to Curcumin, the well known phenolic immunomodulator, which lowers T cell activation. An investigation into the mechanisms of action of the three plant growth regulators revealed a rapid induction of reactive oxygen species (ROS), mainly comprising H2O2 . In addition, these three molecules synergize with soluble anti-CD3 signaling to enhance intracellular Ca2+ concentrations Ca2+](i), leading to greater T cell activation, e.g. induction of CD25 and IL-2. Enhanced production of TNF alpha and IFN gamma by CD4+ T cells is also observed upon plant growth regulator treatment with soluble anti-CD3. Interestingly, maximal IL-2 production and CD4(+) T cell cycle progression are observed upon activation with soluble anti-CD3 and phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA), a phorbol ester. Additionally, stimulation with PMA and Ionomcyin (a Ca2+ ionophore), which activates T cells by circumventing the TCR, and plant growth regulators also demonstrated the role of the strength of signal (SOS): T cell cycle progression is enhanced with gentle activation conditions but decreased with strong activation conditions. This study demonstrates the direct effects of three plant growth regulators on CD4(+) T cell activation and cycling. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Some recent observations at Pic-du-Midi (Mulleret al., 1992a) suggest that the photospheric footpoints of coronal magnetic field lines occasionally move rapidly with typical velocities of the order 3 km s–1 for about 3 or 4 min. We argue that such occasional rapid footpoint motions could have a profound impact on the heating of the quiet corona. Qualitative estimates indicate that these occasional rapid motions can account for the entire energy flux needed to heat the quiet corona. We therefore carry out a mathematical analysis to study in detail the response of a vertical thin flux tube to photospheric footpoint motions in terms of a superposition of linear kink modes for an isothermal atmosphere. We find the resulting total energy that is asymptotically injected into an isothermal atmosphere (i.e., an atmosphere without any back reflection). By using typical parameter values for fast and slow footpoint motions, we show that, even if the footpoints spend only 2.5% of the time undergoing rapid motions, still these rapid motions could be more efficient in transporting energy to the corona than the slow motions that take place most of the time.

Octabromotetraphenylporphyrin adopts a severe saddle-shaped distorted structure owing to the steric crowding of heavy bromine substituents. The rate enhancement of porphyrin metalation reaction is primarily due to the nonplanarity of the ring while the electronic effect diminishes the affinity of the porphyrin towards metal ions.

Nanoscale dispersions of intermetallic Ti2Ni particles in an ordered TiNi intermetallic matrix have been produced by rapid solidification processing of near equiatomic TiNi alloys containing small amount of Si utilising the principle of kinetic competition in the undercooled liquid, A detailed characterisation of the microstructures obtained by different processing conditions was carried out to establish the trend of the refinement of the scale of microstructure. The observed microstructural conditions are rationalised in terms of a metastable phase diagram and the Uhlmann, Chalmers and Jackson theory of the trapping of second phase particles by a moving interface.

Fast protein liquid chromatography (FPLC) system using Mono Q (HR 5/5) anion-exchange column chromatography followed by highly cross-linked urea-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (urea-PAGE) was used for the purification of lysine-specific tRNA (tRNA(Lys)) from rat liver. Crude tRNA from rat liver was fractionated with a linear gradient of NaCl (0.3-0.8 M) in triethanolamine-HCl buffer, pH 4.5, and the activity of tRNA(Lys) was found to elute between 0.51 and 0.57 M NaCl. Using this concentration range of NaCl, tRNA(Lys) was refractionated on the same column with a shallow gradient, where a single peak of tRNA(Lys) activity was obtained. tRNA(Lys)-rich fractions recovered from the second run were electrophoretically separated on 16% polyacrylamide-7 M urea gel into one major band and three minor bands. The major band showed a specific activity of 997 pmols/A260 U for tRNALys with a 43-fold purification and approximately 17% recovery. The minor bands displayed negligible or no activity for lysine. tRNA(Lys) obtained by this method was found to be homogeneous by competitive aminoacylation. The advantages of FPLC followed by urea-PAGE in the purification of an amino acid-specific tRNA over conventional column chromatography are discussed.

The use of microwave heating technique for the acceleration of ortho ester Claisen rearrangement (a three step transformation) is described. Irradiation of a DMF solution of the allyl alcohol 5, triethyl orthoacetate and propionic acid (catalytic) in an Erlenmeyer flask for 10 minutes in a microwave oven generated the ester 8 in 83% yield. Analogously, ortho ester Claisen rearrangement of a variety of allyl and propargyl alcohols (9, 12-22) were achieved. The formation of the diester 10 from 2-butyne-1,4-diol (9) via the ortho ester Claisen rearrangement of two allyl alcohol moieties (involving sh steps) in 15 minutes, demonstrates the versatility of the microwave heating technique.

Nanometric aggregates of solids can be classified into two types, nanograined or nanophased materials and nanocomposites. In the present paper after a brief review including the relation between size and boundary fraction, the basic principles that can be utilized to synthesize these materials from liquid route has been discussed. We shall present examples to show that with proper choice of systems and conditions it is possible to obtain nanocomposites in systems showing clustering tendencies in liquid as well as the systems exhibiting ordering tendencies leading to compound formation

Tetragonal ZrO2 was synthesized by the solution combustion technique using glycine as the fuel. The compound was characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and BET surface area analysis. The ability of this compound to adsorb dyes was investigated, and the compound had a higher adsorption capacity than commercially activated carbon. Infrared spectroscopic observations were used to determine the various interactions and the groups responsible for the adsorption activity of the compound. The effects of the initial concentration of the dye, temperature, adsorbent concentration, and pH of the solution were studied. The kinetics of adsorption was described as a first-order process, and the relative magnitudes of internal and external mass transfer processes were determined. The equilibrium adsorption was also determined and modeled by a composite Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm.
