LECO analysis, pyrolysis assay, and bitumen and elemental analysis were used to characterize the organic matter of 23 black shale samples from Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 93, Hole 603B, located in the western North Atlantic. The organic matter is dominantly gas-prone and/or refractory. Two cores within the Turonian and Cenomanian, however, contained significant quantities of well-preserved, hydrogen-enriched, organic matter. This material is thermally immature and represents a potential oil-prone source rock. These sediments do not appear to have been deposited within a stagnant, euxinic ocean as would be consistent with an "oceanic anoxic event." Their organic geochemical and sedimentary character is more consistent with deposition by turbidity currents originating on the continental shelf and slope.

Leg 94 Sites are located in a large geographic area of the northeastern Atlantic. Clay mineral analyses of the sediments recovered on Leg 94 (Eocene to the present), together with results obtained from previous DSDP legs (47B, 48, 80, 81, 82), provide greater insight into the paleoenvironmental evolution of the northeastern Atlantic. The characteristics of Eocene clay sediments are regional, reflecting, in the absence of strong bottom currents, the influence of neighboring petrographic environments: basic volcanic rocks (Sites 403-406, 552, and 608) and acid volcanic rocks (Sites 508 to 510). During the Oligocene, atmospheric circulation patterns left their mineralogical signatures in the southern part of the area investigated (Sites 558 and 608), whereas during the Miocene the intrusion of northern water masses led to the gradual homogenization of the clay sedimentation throughout the North Atlantic. In the late Pliocene, input from glacial sources became widespread.

Pigmy Basin sediments cored in Hole 619 of Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 96 are silty clays composed, on the average, of < 1% sand, 37% silt, 48% clay, and 14% carbonate minerals. Except for minor grain dissolution in some silt grains, there is no distinctive variation with depth in either composition or texture of the sand- and silt-sized minerals. This suggests a constant source of sediment supply and little diagenetic alteration of these size fractions. Clay minerals are dominated by smectite or, more precisely, montmorillonite. On the average, the clay-sized fraction consists of 48% smectite and mixed layer minerals, 30% illite, and 23% total kaolinite and chlorite. There appears to be a slight decrease in smectite and concomitant increases in other clay minerals with depth. These changes are further substantiated by the variations of ammonium acetate exchangeable K+, Mg2+, and Na+ in bulk samples. Thus, incipient diagenesis of Pigmy Basin sediments is evidenced in the mineralogical and associated chemical characteristics of the clay fractions.

Glauconite-rich sediments have been encountered at two horizons during drilling in the southwest Rockall Plateau. The younger of these horizons lies at the base of a deep-sea ooze sequence and is of early or middle Miocene age. Glauconite formed in situ during periods of nondeposition related to strong bottom-water currents, in water depths of as much as 2500 m - five times greater than previously accepted limits for glauconite formation. The older horizon, of early Eocene age, is a record of the major transgression coincident with the separation of Rockall and Greenland. Isotopic age dating of the Miocene glauconites gives results in relatively close accord with their biostratigraphic age. However, an Eocene (NP12) glauconite gives a highly discrepant date (36.5 m.y. ago). One possible explanation is that the Eocene glauconites have continued to evolve after burial by the diagenetic uptake of potassium from the surrounding mud matrix, a possibility denied to the Miocene glauconites by the relative scarcity of available potassium in the nannofossil-foraminiferal ooze matrix.

Sr and Nd isotopic composition of 23 basalts from Sites 556-559 and 561-564. are reported. The 87Sr/86Sr ratios in fresh glasses and leached whole rocks range from 0.7025 to 0.7034 and are negatively correlated with the initial 143Nd/ 144Nd compositions, which range from 0.51315 to 0.51289. The Sr and Nd isotopic compositions (in glasses or leached samples) lie within the fields of mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB) and ocean island basalts (OIB) from the Azores on the Nd-Sr mantle array/fan plot. In general, there is a correlation between the trace element characteristics and the 143Nd/144Nd composition (i.e., samples with Hf/Ta>7 and (Ce/Sm)N<1 [normal-MORB] have initial 143Nd/144Nd>0.51307, whereas samples with Hf/Ta<7 and (Ce/Sm)N>1 (enriched-MORB) have initial 143Nd/144Nd compositions <0.51300). A significant deviation from this general rule is found in Hole 558, where the N-MORB can have, within experimental limits, identical isotopic compositions to those found in associated E-MORB. The plume-depleted asthenosphere mixing hypothesis of Schilling (1975), White and Schilling (1978) and Schilling et al. (1977) provides a framework within which the present data can be evaluated. Given the distribution and possible origins of the chemical and isotopic heterogeneity observed in Leg 82 basalts, and some other basalts in the area, it would appear that the Schilling et al. model is not entirely satisfactory. In particular, it can be shown that trace element data may incorrectly estimate the plume component and more localized mantle heterogeneity (both chemical and isotopic) may be important.

Cenozoic sediments recovered from Sites 548, 549, and 550 were the objects of mineralogical (bulk sample and <2 - µm fraction) and geochemical (HCl extract) studies. Thin sections of rock pebbles embedded in sediments (upper levels at Site 548, particularly) were examined on a polarizing microscope. This study outlines the vertical and lateral variation and evolution of the sedimentation. In the Paleocene and lower Eocene, the clay fraction is abundant and smectite is practically the sole existing clay mineral. High Mn, Al, Fe, Mg, and K contents were measured in HCl extracts. Through the middle Eocene, carbonates become more abundant - highly dominant at Site 548. Metal contents in HCl extracts are very low. The clay fraction, although dominated at all sites by smectites, becomes richer in illite and poorly crystallized chlorite. At the middle/upper Miocene boundary, a significant decrease in the smectite/(illite + chlorite) ratio occurs at all sites, and this decrease continues into the middle Pliocene. This decrease is marked by an abrupt increase of quartz at Site 548. At the two other sites, carbonates remain highly predominant; HCl extracts reflect the relative abundance of the clay and carbonate fractions. After a brief recurrence of smectite in a high-metal-content interval, illite and chlorite become the dominant clay minerals in the upper Pliocene and the Pleistocene, where numerous variations in mineralogical composition occur in the clay fraction (Sites 548 and 549) or in non-clay components (Site 548). Several pebbles of various nature and origin, encountered in different levels of this interval at Site 548, appear to have an ice-rafting origin. This study points out three main breaks in the general evolution of the sedimentation: the first, corresponding to the lower/middle Eocene boundary, is marked by the increase of carbonates and associated elements; the second, corresponding to the middle/upper Miocene boundary, is marked by a major decrease of the smectite/(illite + chlorite) ratio at all sites and by a massive appearance of quartz at Site 548; and the third, which occurred toward the late Pliocene, is marked by the dominance of primary clay minerals and the arrival of ice-rafted pebbles. Our interpretation of results considers paleohydrological and paleoclimatic phenomena. It is suggested that the major middle/late Miocene break was associated with an increase of the deep bottom-water circulation between the Norwegian Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, and/or a climatic evolution: humidification and cooling of climate. The changes toward the late Pliocene appear to have been the first effects of the glaciations at the end of Cenozoic.

Alteration products of basalts from the four holes drilled during Leg 81 were studied and found to be characterized by the widespread occurrence of trioctahedral clay minerals (Mg smectite to chlorite). In some cases zeolites (analcite, chabazite) are associated with the saponite. A more oxidizing stage is marked by a saponite-celadonite association, presenting the geochemical characteristics of hydrothermal processes. Later stages of alteration are represented by palagonitization and subaerial weathering at two sites. These different alteration processes of basalts from Leg 81 record the paleoenvironment during the first opening stages of the Northeast Atlantic Ocean in the Paleocene-Eocene periods.

The Leg 80 basalts drilled on the Porcupine Abyssal Plain 10 km southwest of Goban Spur (Hole 550B) and on the western edge of Goban Spur (Hole 551), respectively, are typical light-rare-earth-element- (LREE-) depleted oceanic tholeiites. The basalts from the two holes are almost identical; most of their primary geochemical and mineralogical characteristics have been preserved, but they have undergone some low-temperature alteration by seawater, such as enrichment in K, Rb, and Cs and development of secondary potassic minerals of the "brownstone facies." K/Ar dating fail to give realistic emplacement ages; the apparent ages obtained become younger with alteration (causing an increase in K2O). Hole 551 basalts are clearly different from the continental tholeiites emplaced on the margins of oceanizing domains during the prerift and synrift stages.

Early Miocene to Quaternary benthic foraminifers have been quantitatively studied (>63 ?m size fraction) in a southwest Pacific traverse of DSDP sites at depths from about 1300 to 3200 m down the Lord Howe Rise (Site 590,1299 m; Site 591, 2131 m; Site 206, 3196 m). Benthic foraminiferal species smaller than 150 µm are by far dominant in the samples, averaging from 78 to 89% of the total benthic foraminiferal assemblages in the three sites examined. Although about 150 benthic foraminiferal species or taxonomic groups have been identified, only a few species dominate the assemblages. These dominant species include Epistominella exigua, E. rotunda, and Globocassidulina subglobosa, which prevail in the three sites, and Oridorsalis umbonatus, E. umbonifera, and Cassidulina carinata, which occur usually in frequencies of between 10 and 30%. Faunal changes in Neogene benthic foraminiferal assemblages are not similar in each of the three sites, but faunal successions are most similar between the two shallowest sites. The deepest site differs in composition and distribution of dominant species. There are three intervals during which the most important changes occur in benthic foraminiferal assemblages: the early middle Miocene (14 Ma; the Orbulina suturalis Zone and the Globorotalia fohsi s.l. Zone); the late Miocene (6 Ma; the Globigerina nepenthes Zone) and near the Pliocene/Pleistocene boundary at about 2 Ma. A Q-mode factor analysis of the faunal data has assisted in recognizing assemblage changes during the Neogene at each of the sites. Early Miocene assemblages were dominated by Globocassidulina subglobosa at Site 590 (1299 m), by G. subglobosa and Oridorsalis umbonatus at Site 591 (2131 m), and by G. subglobosa, E. exigua, and Bolivina pusilla at Site 206 (3196 m). In the early middle Miocene at Sites 590 and 591, a marked increase occurred in the frequencies of E. exigua. Epistominella exigua reached maximum abundance in the early Miocene in the deeper Site 206, and in the middle and early late Miocene in the shallower Sites 590 and 591. In the late Miocene, a spike occurred in the frequencies of E. umbonifera in Site 206, whereas the dominant species changed from E. exigua to E. rotunda at Site 590. Latest Miocene to late Pliocene assemblages were dominated by E. rotunda at Site 590, by E. exigua at Site 591, and by G. subglobosa-E. exigua (early Pliocene) and E. rotunda-E. exigua (late Pliocene) at Site 206. At the Pliocene/Pleistocene boundary, E. exigua temporarily diminished in importance at Sites 591 and 206. Quaternary assemblages were dominated by E. rotunda and Cassidulina carinata at Site 590, by E. rotunda at Site 591, and by E. exigua at Site 206. These major faunal changes are all associated with known major paleoceanographic events-the middle Miocene development of the Antarctic ice sheet; the latest Miocene global cooling and increased polar glaciation; and the onset of quasiperiodic glaciation of the Northern Hemisphere. These major paleoceanographic events undoubtedly had a profound effect on the intermediate and deep water mass structure of the Tasman Sea as recorded by changes in benthic foraminiferal assemblages.

Three phases of volcanism have been recognized in the lower Paleogene sequence of the southwest Rockall Plateau which are related to the onset of seafloor spreading in the NE Atlantic. The earliest, Phase 1, is marked by a sequence of tholeiitic basalts and hyaloclastites which form the dipping reflector sequence in Edoras Basin. Phase 2 is characterized by tuffs and lapilli tuffs of air-fall origin, ranging in composition from basic to intermediate. They were generated by highly explosive igneous activity due to magma-water interaction, and terminate at the level of a major transgression. Subsequently, volcanism reverted to tholeiitic basalt type, producing the thin tuffs and minor basalt flows of Phase 3. Alteration of the volcanic glass and diagenesis of the tuffs and lapilli tuffs has been considerable in many cases, with a large number of diagenetic mineral phases observed, including smectite, celadonite, analcime, phillipsite, clinoptilolite, mordenite, and calcite. Although calcite is the latest observed diagenetic cement, it nevertheless occurred relatively early, in one case totally preserving basaltic glass from alteration.

The geochemical studies of Sites 534 and 391 and their comparison allow us to improve the chemical characterization of different geological formations dating from the early Callovian to the Maestrichtian along the continental margin of eastern North America. Three of the formations are favorable for the preservation of organic matter: (1) the unnamed formation (middle Callovian to Oxfordian), (2) the Blake-Bahama Formation (Berriasian to Barremian), and (3) the Hatteras Formation (Aptian to Cenomanian). The organic matter is mainly detrital, except for a few organic-rich layers where a contribution of aquatic material occurs. In these organic-rich layers, the petroleum potential is medium to good. Maturation has not quite reached the beginning of the oil window even for the deepest organic material.

At DSDP Sites 534 (Central Atlantic) and 535 and 540 (Gulf of Mexico), and in the Vocontian Basin (France), Lower Cretaceous deposits show a very pronounced alternation of limestone and marl. This rhythm characterizes the pelagic background sedimentation and is independent of detritic intercalations related to contour and turbidity currents. Bed-scale cycles, estimated to be 6000-26,000 yr. long, comprise major and minor units. Their biological and mineralogic components, burrowing, heavy isotopes C and O, and some geochemical indicators, vary in close correlation with CaCO3 content. Vertical changes of frequency and asymmetry of the cycles are connected with fluctuations of the sedimentation rate. Plots of cycle thickness ("cyclograms") permit detailed correlations of the three areas and improve the stratigraphic subdivision of Neocomian deposits at the DSDP sites. Small-scale alternations, only observed in DSDP cores, comprise centimetric to millimetric banding and millimetric to micrometric lamination, here interpreted as varvelike alternations between laminae that are rich in calcareous plankton and others rich in clay. The laminations are estimated to correspond to cycles approximately 1,3, and 13 yr. in duration. The cyclic patterns appear to be governed by an interplay of continental and oceanic processes. Oceanic controls express themselves in variations of the biogenic carbonate flux, which depends on variations of such elements as temperature, oxygenation, salinity, and nutrient content. Continental controls modulate the influxes of terrigenous material, organic matter, and nutrients derived from cyclic erosion on land. Among the possible causes of cyclic sedimentation, episodic carbonate dissolution has been ruled out in favor of climatic fluctuations with a large range of periods. Such fluctuations are consistent with the great geographic extension shown by alternation controls and with the continuous spectrum of scales that characterizes limestone-marl cycles. The climatic variations induced by the Earth's orbital parameters (Milankovitch cycles) could be connected to bed-interbed alternations.

Analyses of extractable organic matter from selected core samples obtained at DSDP Site 535 in the eastern Gulf of Mexico show that the asphalt (or tar) and adjacent oil stains in Lower Cretaceous fractured limestones have a common origin and are not derived from the surrounding organic-matter-rich limestones. Organic matter indigenous to those surrounding limestones was shown to be thermally immature and incapable of yielding the hydrocarbon mixture discovered. In contrast, the oil-stained and asphaltic material appears to be a post-migration alteration product of a mature oil that has migrated from source rocks deeper in the section, or from stratigraphically equivalent but compositionally different source-facies down-dip from the drill site. Further, hydrocarbons of the altered petroleum residues were shown to be similar to Sunniland-type oils found in Lower Cretaceous rocks of South Florida. The results suggest that shallowwater, platform-type source-rock facies similar to those that generated Sunniland-type oils, or deeper-water facies having comparable oil-generating material, are present in this deep-water (> 3000 m) environment. These findings have important implications for the petroleum potential in the eastern Gulf of Mexico and for certain types of deep-sea sediments.

Two trenches off Japan were explored during DSDP Leg 87. One is the Nankai Trough and the other is the Japan Trench; Site 582 is located on the floor of the former and Site 584 is situated on the deep-sea terrace of the latter. Cores from Site 582 and 584 consist mainly of hemipelagic sediments and diatomaceous silts and mudstone, respectively. In this report we analyze the chemistry of the interstitial water and sediments, as well as the sediment mineralogy. Sulfate reduction is accompanied by the production of secondary pyrite, which is rich in the sediment at both sites. Dissolved Ca concentration is relatively low and changes only slightly at both sites, probably because of the formation of carbonate with high alkalinity. Concentrations of dissolved Mg decrease with depth at Site 584. The dissolved Mg depletion probably results from the formation of Mg-rich carbonate and/or ion exchange and reaction between interstitial water and clay minerals. Higher Si/Al values are due to biogenic opal in the sediments and roughly correlate with higher values of interstitial water SiO2. Increases in dissolved Li concentrations may be related to its release from clay minerals, to advection that results from dewatering, and/or to fluid transport.
