Besides the formal publications held in the library (books, annual reports. Journals and reprints) a considerable quantity of unpublished Information on subjects relevant to freshwater fisheries in East Africa is held on various departmental files, etc.in Jinja. This material is extremely valuable: firstly because it is usually of immediate reference to current research work at EAFFRO, and secondly because it usually exists only as original material: no other copies are available elsewhere.

The term ‘refugia’ was originally used to describe the restricted full-glacial locations of modern mid- and high-latitude taxa, especially trees and shrubs. We discuss the extension of this original use to other situations, including its widening to encompass ‘interglacial refugia’. Recent genetic work with modern populations suggests that, at the glacial–interglacial transition, those taxa that did vastly increase their ranges and abundances did so from a small subset of their full-glacial populations. We suggest that ‘bottleneck’ might be a more appropriate term to use for temporarily reduced populations, to indicate continuity of the populations, and that individualistic response of taxa to climate change appears to extend to intra-specific levels. The extent to which expanded populations contribute to long-term genetic pools remains uncertain.

Programmatic form-finding and the visual analysis of creative works (architecture, sound, sculpture, painting, music or dance) can be combined to develop “alchemical” processes for the computational exploration of form. This paper reports two project-based form exploration experiments using such a process. The first experiment develops a process for capturing, manipulating and generating form based on a piece of dance choreography. The second experiment explores the decompression of space and architectural elements encoded within the Duchamp painting “Nude descending a staircase”. A discussion for incorporating programmatic strategies and for developing an innovative approach to conceptual form processing based on the language of geometry is presented.

Purpose: – This paper seeks to examine the adoption of an environmental management system (EMS) in government departments involved in one Australian state and identify the key factors that contribute to successful adoption.

Design/methodology/approach: – Data were collected through semi-structured interviews conducted with environmental coordinators involved in the EMS adoption. The external consultant appointed by the Environmental Protection Authority who provided the training on behalf of the government departments was also interviewed.

Findings: – The results from the analysis shows that environmental coordinators valued the training as it enhanced their knowledge and skills. They experienced a combination of both tangible and intangible benefits. The lack of contribution and support from top management; difficulty in accessing resources; and resistance from employees were the main challenges experienced during EMS implementation. Recommendations made by the interviewees included: providing training to top management to increase their understanding of the EMS process and its benefits; selection of the right champion; provision of adequate resources; and, training of employees.

Research limitations/implications: – The findings are based on interviews conducted in only one Australian state and no follow up interviews could be undertaken to track the progress made by various departments.

Originality/value: – The findings of this paper are original as no other similar study has been undertaken in this Australian state documenting the experiences of environmental coordinators when implementing an EMS. Our findings have practical implications for public sector organisations and government departments implementing EMS.

The thesis is a work of original creative fiction, in which an agoraphobic writer liberates himself from his prison using his writing. The novel employs metafictional techniques and a bifocal narrative. The exegesis explores creativity and originality in modern literature, using both the thesis and contemporary criticism.

The thesis consists of a creative component: a novel in multiple first-person voices, and a theoretical component: investigating the interaction between conscious and unconscious processes, in creative writing. The concept of alterity as ‘otherness’, at the heart of the theoretical inquiry, derives its momentum from the experience of the operation of the ‘other’ in the ‘I’ in narrative composition.

The food industry has been rapidly modernized, and with this the disposal and the consumption of industrialized food has been increasing continually. These products lose their original morphological characteristics, requiring fast and reliable tests that could help to identify the species in question, as most fraudulent behavior in the milk and dairy industry (meat and fish) is carried out where there is partial or total exchange of the original material for other with less value at market. Nowadays there is a lot of techniques that can be used for the identification of animal species, based on muscle protein, or DNA analysis. In the case of protein based analysis, we can mention several types of electrophoresis and immunologic methods, as ELISA. In the case of DNA based methods, we have several assays that use the amplification of DNA fragments, known as PCR, as proof. All these techniques have advantages and disadvantages that can be affected by factors- the sample condition, or the degree of relation between the species in question. Because of this, it’s necessary that a continuous study looking for the improvement of the available techniques, making sure that the confirmation of food authenticity is in place. This is to ensure the true product value, to comply with labeling regulationand and protect the consumer of frauds
