Temporary help agencies and workers' occupational mobility

This paper focuses on the occupational mobility of temporary helpagency workers by studying their job-to-job upgrading chances as opposedto those who have not been hired through these intermediaries. A screeningapproach to the role of those labor brokers suggests that agency workersmay expect greater chances of upgrading from one occupation to another.Results obtained with a sample of Spanish workers show that workingthrough those intermediaries comparatively offers stronger prospects ofoccupational upgrading for workers of a medium qualification level. Thisbasic result is reinforced when the existence of self-selection into thistype of intermediated work is appropriately taken into account.

The use of derivatives in the Spanish mutual fund industry

We study the use of derivatives in the Spanish mutual fund industry. The picture that emerges from our analysis is rather negative. In general, the use of derivatives does not improve the performance of the funds. In only one out of eight categories we find some (very weak and not robust) evidence of superior performance. In most of the cases users significantly underperform non users. Furthermore, users do not seem to exhibit superior timing or selectivity skills either, but rather the contrary. This bad performance is only partially explained by the larger fees funds using derivatives charge. Moreover,we do not find evidence of derivatives being used for hedging purposes. We do find evidence of derivatives being used for speculation. But users in only one category exhibit skills as speculators. Finally, we find evidence of derivatives being used to manage the funds cash inflows and outflows more efficiently.

La Crema: A case study of mutual fire insurance

We analyze a mutual fire insurance mechanism usedin Andorra, which is called La Crema in the locallanguage. This mechanism relies on households'announced property values to determine how much ahousehold is reimbursed in the case of a fire andhow payments are apportioned among other households.The only Pareto eficient allocation reachablethrough the mechanism requires that all householdshonestly report the true value of their property.However, such honest reporting is not an equilibriumexcept in the extreme case where the property valuesare identical for all households. Nevertheless, as the size of the society becomes large, thebenefits from deviating from truthful reportingvanish, and all of the non-degenerate equilibriaof the mechanism are nearly truthful andapproximately Pareto efficient.

Organização de Sistema de Help Desk O caso da Universidade Jean Piaget de Cabo Verde

Este trabalho de investigação pretende dar a conhecer como se faz e como deve ser feita a organização de um sistema de Help Desk num ambiente universitário. É efectuado um enquadramento teórico sobre Help Desk e o seu enquadramento num ambiente universitário, mostrando a forma de dar suporte aos utilizadores, as funções e competências de um serviço de Help Desk, os cenários e as soluções bem como uma proposta concreta sobre a organização de um sistema de Help Desk. É ainda apresentado o caso da Universidade Jean Piaget de Cabo Verde, o seu enquadramento no Instituto Piaget, a apresentação da Universidade e uma breve descrição da sua estrutura, bem como uma descrição resumida da Divisão Tecnológica da Universidade Jean Piaget, e do seu serviço de Help Desk existente. Por fim faz-se uma proposta de organização de um sistema de Help Desk e são apresentadas algumas sugestões que poderão ser levadas em conta para melhorar a organização do sistema existente.

Diabetische Neuropathien: Klinische Manifestationsformen, Früherkennung und Zuweisung zu einem Neurologen [Diabetic Neuropathies: Clinical sub-Types, Early Detection, and Asking Help from Neurologist].

In diabetes mellitus, it is expected to see a common, mainly sensitive, distal symmetrical polyneuropathy (DPN) involving a large proportion of diabetic patients according to known risk factors. Several other diabetic peripheral neuropathies are recognized, such as dysautonomia and multifocal neuropathies including lumbosacral radiculoplexus and oculomotor palsies. In this review, general aspects of DPN and other diabetic neuropathies are examined, and it is discussed why and how the general practionner has to perform a yearly examination. At the present time, some consensuses emerge to ask help from neurologist when faced to other forms of peripheral neuropathies than distal symmetrical DPN.
