From medical librarian to informacionist: semantic traces of their profiles and areas of performance

This literature review retakes the discussion of the profiles and competences of the information area professional, specifically, in the health field. Therefore, the aim here is to outline the new fields of performance for the informationist and the profiles required in the health context.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the new low-addition (add) (+3.00 diopter [D]) ReSTOR multifocal IOL compared with the preceding ReSTOR model with +4.00 D add. SETTING: University Eye Hospital, Tuebingen, Germany. DESIGN: Comparative case series. METHODS: Patients with a +3.00 D or +4.00 D add multifocal IOL were examined for uncorrected and distance-corrected visual acuity at distance, intermediate, and near. A defocus profile was assessed, individual reading distance and the distance for lowest intermediate visual acuity were determined. Patient satisfaction was evaluated with a standardized questionnaire. Contrast sensitivity was tested under mesopic and photopic conditions. RESULTS: Uncorrected and distance-corrected intermediate visual acuities were statistically significantly better in the +3.00 D add group (24 eyes) than in the +4.00 D add group (30 eyes); distance and near visual acuities were not different between groups. The defocus profile significantly varied between groups. The +4.00 D add group had a closer reading distance (33.0 cm) than the +3.00 D add group (43.5 cm), a closer point of lowest intermediate visual acuity (65.8 cm versus 86.9 cm) and worse lowest intermediate visual acuity (20/59 +/- 4.5 letters [SD] versus 20/48 +/- 5.5 letters). Thus, patients in the +3.00 D add group reported being more satisfied with intermediate visual acuity. The +3.00 D add group reported more glare but less halos than the +4.00 D add group; contrast sensitivity was not different. CONCLUSION: The lower addition resulted in a narrower defocus profile, a farther reading distance, and better intermediate visual acuity and thus increased patient satisfaction.

Roots of Pfaffia paniculata have been well documented for multifarious therapeutic values and have also been used for cancer therapy in folk medicine. This study has been performed in a human breast tumor cell line, the MCF-7 cells. These are the most commonly used model of estrogen-positive breast cancer, and it has been originally established in 1973 at the Michigan Cancer Foundation from a pleural effusion taken from a woman with metastatic breast cancer. Butanolic extract of the roots of P. paniculata showed cytotoxic effect MCF-7 cell line. as determined with crystal violet assay, cellular death with acridine orange/ethidium bromide staining, and cell proliferation with immunocytochemistry of bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU). Subcellular alterations were evaluated by electron microscopy. Cells treated With butanolic extract showed degeneration of cytoplasmic components and profound morphological and nuclear alterations. The results show that this butanolic extract indeed presents cytotoxic substances, and its fractions merit further investigations. (C) 2008 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

This study evaluated whether the four gonadorelin products that are commercially available in the United States produce comparable ovulation responses in lactating cows. Dairy cows at 7 d after last gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) treatment of Ovsynch (Day 7), with a corpus luteum (CL) >= 15 mm and at least one follicle >= 10 mm, were evaluated for response to GnRH treatment. Selected cows were randomized to receive (100 mu g; im): (1) Cystorelin (n = 146): (2) Factrel (n = 132): (3) Fertagyl (n = 140); or (4) Ovacyst (n = 140). On Day 14, cows were examined for Ovulation by detection of an accessory CL. Circulating luteinizing hormone (LH) concentrations were also evaluated in some cows after treatment with 100 mu g (n = 10 per group) or 50 mu g (n = 5 per group) GnRH. Statistical analyses were performed with the procedures MIXED and GLIMMIX of the SAS program. Percentage of cows ovulating differed (P < 0.01) among groups, with that for Factrel being lower (55.3%) than that for Cystorelin (76.7%), Fertagyl (73.6%), or Ovacyst (85.0%), There was no effect of batch, parity, or follicle size on ovulation response. but increasing body condition score decreased Ovulation response. There was a much greater LH release in cows treated with 100 mu g than in those treated with 50 mu g, but there were no detectable differences among products in time to LH peak, peak LH concentration, or area under the LH curve and no treatment effects nor treatment by time interactions on circulating LH profile. Thus, ovulation response to Factrel on Day 7 of the cycle was lower than that for other commercial GnRH products, although a definitive mechanism for this difference between products was not demonstrated. Uses a sample of 622 day and overnight visitors to the O’ Reilly’s/Green Mountains site of Lamington National Park, Queensland, Australia, to identify their socio-economic and other pertinent characteristics and the main reasons and attributes that attract them to the site. Particular attention is given to birds and their attributes as attractions. The primary economic injection accruing locally as a result of visits is examined and the difference that the presence of birds makes to local expenditure by visitors is explored. The extent of support for and objection to the introduction of a fee for entering Lamington National Park is estimated. The many suggestions received from visitors for environmental improvements at this site are discussed. It is suggested that unless a way can be found to regulate the number of visitors to this site and obtain extra funds to finance improvements at this site, the magnitude of many of these problems will grow. This will necessitate a fresh look at the desirability or otherwise for charging entry fees to Lamington National Park.

Background: We compared the circulating levels of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2. MMP-9, tissue inhibitors of metal loproteinase (TIMP)-1, TIMP-2, and MMP-9/TIMP-1 and MMP-2/TIMP-2 ratios in migraine patients without aura (MWA) and in migraine patients with aura (MA) with those found in healthy subjects (controls). Methods: We studied 80 migraine (40 MWA and 40 MA) women and 40 controls. Pro-MMP-2 levels were determined by zymography and MMP-9, TIMP-1, and TIMP-2 levels were determined by ELISA. Results: While we found similar TIMP-2 levels, higher plasma pro-MMP-2 and pro-MMP-2/TIMP-2 ratios were found in MWA and MA patients compared with controls (P<0.05). Higher TIMP-1 levels and lower MMP-9/TIMP-1 ratio were found in MA, but not in MWA, patients compared with controls (P<0.05). We found no significant differences when patients without headache attack were compared with patients having a headache attack (all P<0.05). Conclusions: We showed an increased net MMP-2 activity in MWA and MA. The increased MMP-9/TIMP-1 ratios in MWA patients contrast with the lower MMP-9/TIMP-1 ratios in MA patients and may reflect pathophysiological differences between these conditions. A dynamic modelling methodology, which combines on-line variable estimation and parameter identification with physical laws to form an adaptive model for rotary sugar drying processes, is developed in this paper. In contrast to the conventional rate-based models using empirical transfer coefficients, the heat and mass transfer rates are estimated by using on-line measurements in the new model. Furthermore, a set of improved sectional solid transport equations with localized parameters is developed in this work to reidentified on-line using measurement data, the model is able to closely track the dynamic behaviour of rotary drying processes within a broad range of operational conditions. This adaptive model is validated against experimental data obtained from a pilot-scale rotary sugar dryer. The proposed modelling methodology can be easily incorporated into nonlinear model based control schemes to form a unified modelling and control framework.place the global correlation for the computation of solid retention time. Since a number of key model variables and parameters are identified on-line using measurement data, the model is able to closely track the dynamic behaviour of rotary drying processes within a broad range of operational conditions. This adaptive model is validated against experimental data obtained from a pilot-scale rotary sugar dryer. The proposed modelling methodology can be easily incorporated into nonlinear model based control schemes to form a unified modelling and control framework.

This paper compares two hypothetical and identical vehicle deceleration profiles mirrored in time, one linearly descending with time and the other linearly ascending with time. The differences of such profiles on occupant velocity differential and by implication, injury levels at the point of occupant impact are presented. An indifference point is established to assist in comparing which occupant body part will benefit from the altered crash pulse. It is shown that for occupant proximity distances below the indifference point, an ascending profile results in lower injury risk. Above the indifference point, the result is reversed.
