A Predictive Perfomance Model for Superscalar Processors

Designing and optimizing high performance microprocessors is an increasingly difficult task due to the size and complexity of the processor design space, high cost of detailed simulation and several constraints that a processor design must satisfy. In this paper, we propose the use of empirical non-linear modeling techniques to assist processor architects in making design decisions and resolving complex trade-offs. We propose a procedure for building accurate non-linear models that consists of the following steps: (i) selection of a small set of representative design points spread across processor design space using latin hypercube sampling, (ii) obtaining performance measures at the selected design points using detailed simulation, (iii) building non-linear models for performance using the function approximation capabilities of radial basis function networks, and (iv) validating the models using an independently and randomly generated set of design points. We evaluate our model building procedure by constructing non-linear performance models for programs from the SPEC CPU2000 benchmark suite with a microarchitectural design space that consists of 9 key parameters. Our results show that the models, built using a relatively small number of simulations, achieve high prediction accuracy (only 2.8% error in CPI estimates on average) across a large processor design space. Our models can potentially replace detailed simulation for common tasks such as the analysis of key microarchitectural trends or searches for optimal processor design points.

Apuntes en torno al pensamiento político de Joseph Ratzinger

Un ameno libro de circunstancia sobre la elección de Benedicto XVI, publicado apenas un mes después de esta, me servirá para iniciar mi exposición sobre la persona y labor de Joseph Ratzinger. Allí el autor, Alfredo Urdaci, ensaya una interesante tesis, ¿cómo fue posible tal elección? Porque si bien Ratzinger estaba entre los papables, no era muy probable que realmente fuera elegido. Tenía y –por qué no decirlo– sigue teniendo oposición dentro de la Curia y dentro de algunos sectores de la Iglesia. Y cómo no habría de levantarla un cardenal tan políticamente incorrecto como Ratzinger. No me detengo en sus distintas declaraciones a lo largo de su carrera, pero sí me gustaría presentar un par de frases suyas dichas tan solo días antes de su elección como Papa.

Resumen: El presente texto analiza dos cuestiones centrales en el pensamiento de Joseph Ratzinger: por un lado, el problema de la racionalidad del derecho y, en segundo lugar, el fundamento del Estado de Derecho en el mundo moderno. Para tal fin, previo diagnóstico sobre la situación jurídica contemporánea, se analizan ambos tópicos de acuerdo a los principales discursos realizados por el Cardenal Ratzinger y luego papa Benedicto XVI llegando a la conclusión de que el problema subyacente a ambos es el problema de la verdad tanto metafísica como moral.

We conducted a field experiment between August 2001 and February 2002 in Kings Bay, FL, USA, designed to determine whether the amount of time allowed for wild celery (Vallisneria americana Michx) transplants to establish altered the effect of herbivorous manatees (Trichechus manatus L.)on their survival.

Doente e encarcerado defendeu-se com extraordinário vigor, mas foi condenado a internamento numa casa jesuítica e proibido de pregar. Retirou-se em 1681 para o Brasil, onde trabalhou na edição completa dos Sermoens, iniciada em 1679. Voz sagrada... é um suplemento às Vozes saudosas. Foi publicado, após a morte do autor, por Francisco Luiz Ameno em 1748. Reconnaissance of the geology and ground-water resources of Columbia County, Florida

The Floridan aquifer was found to be principal source of ground water in the area, containing artesian water in the northern part of Columbia County, and being recharged in the southern part of the county. A few wells in the northern part of the county tap water present in sediments that lie above the Floridan aquifer. These shallow waters are generally high in iron and tannic acid. The details on the geology and hydrology necessary to conserve and utilize the water available to the residents of Columbia County are presented in this study. (PDF contains 86 pages)

Luis de Menezes, terceiro Conde da Ericeira, nasceu em Lisboa em 1632 e suicidou-se em 1690. Foi chamado de Colbert português por ter estimulado a introdução das artes fabris e industriais em Portugal. Escreveu ‘Historia de Portugal restaurado offerecida ao Illustmo e Excellentmo Senhor D. Joseph Mascarenhas’ em duas partes: a primeira, em 1679 e a segunda, em 1698. A mesma historia obteve depois diversas reimpressões, a saber: Parte I, dividida nos tomos I e II, Lisboa, na Oficina de Domingos Rodrigues, em 1751; Parte II, dividida nos tomos III e IV, Lisboa, na Oficina dos herdeiros de Antonio Pedroso Galram, em 1751. Saiu uma terceira vez em Lisboa em 1759. Segundo Inocêncio, ‘compreende esta historia a narração de todos os sucessos militares e políticos ocorridos em Portugal, desde a restauração de 1640 até o ano de 1668, em que se celebraram as pazes com o reino de Castela’

Aucourt Padilha nasceu em Lisboa, em 6 de junho de 1704. Cavalheiro da Ordem de Cristo e Secretário da Mesa do Desembargo do Paço escreveu, além desta obra, ‘Memorias historicas, geográficas e politicas, observadas de Paris a Lisboa’, em 1746, e ‘Memorias da Serenissima Senhora D. Isabel Luisa Josepha, que foi jurada princeza d'estes reinos’, em 1748, entre outras. Inocêncio define ‘Raridades da natureza, e da arte’ como ‘livro de muita curiosidade e recreação, para o tempo em que seu autor o publicou’

O autor esclarece, no prefácio da obra, ter sido ela redigida "aos trambolhos e às carreiras" e tratar-se de uma experiência num gênero novo - o ensaio. Mas J. Navarro de Andrade, na introdução de seu texto "Viagem ao Araguaia" diz o seguinte de José Vieira Couto de Magalhães : despretensioso, é, contudo, o conto aludido, um trabalho de merecimento, pena é que o autor não produzisse nesse sentido outros escritos, e seguisse outra vereda da vida.

Coral Remote Sensing Workshop: Proceedings and Recommendations, 17-18 September, Sheraton, Brickell Ave, Miami FL

Coral reefs exist in warm, clear, and relatively shallow marine waters worldwide. These complex assemblages of marine organisms are unique, in that they support highly diverse, luxuriant, and essentially self-sustaining ecosystems in otherwise nutrient-poor and unproductive waters. Coral reefs are highly valued for their great beauty and for their contribution to marine productivity. Coral reefs are favorite destinations for recreational diving and snorkeling, as well as commercial and recreational fishing activities. The Florida Keys reef tract draws an estimated 2 million tourists each year, contributing nearly $800 million to the economy. However, these reef systems represent a very delicate ecological balance, and can be easily damaged and degraded by direct or indirect human contact. Indirect impacts from human activity occurs in a number of different forms, including runoff of sediments, nutrients, and other pollutants associated with forest harvesting, agricultural practices, urbanization, coastal construction, and industrial activities. Direct impacts occur through overfishing and other destructive fishing practices, mining of corals, and overuse of many reef areas, including damage from souvenir collection, boat anchoring, and diver contact. In order to protect and manage coral reefs within U.S. territorial waters, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the U.S. Department of Commerce has been directed to establish and maintain a system of national marine sanctuaries and reserves, and to monitor the condition of corals and other marine organisms within these areas. To help carry out this mandate the NOAA Coastal Services Center convened a workshop in September, 1996, to identify current and emerging sensor technologies, including satellite, airborne, and underwater systems with potential application for detecting and monitoring corals. For reef systems occurring within depths of 10 meters or less (Figure 1), mapping location and monitoring the condition of corals can be accomplished through use of aerial photography combined with diver surveys. However, corals can exist in depths greater than 90 meters (Figure 2), well below the limits of traditional optical imaging systems such as aerial or surface photography or videography. Although specialized scuba systems can allow diving to these depths, the thousands of square kilometers included within these management areas make diver surveys for deeper coral monitoring impractical. For these reasons, NOAA is investigating satellite and airborne sensor systems, as well as technologies which can facilitate the location, mapping, and monitoring of corals in deeper waters. The following systems were discussed as having potential application for detecting, mapping, and assessing the condition of corals. However, no single system is capable of accomplishing all three of these objectives under all depths and conditions within which corals exist. Systems were evaluated for their capabilities, including advantages and disadvantages, relative to their ability to detect and discriminate corals under a variety of conditions.
