Expendable bathythermograph data collected by the Ships of Opportunity (SOOP) - Ocean Monitoring Program are analyzed for seasonal and inter-annual variations of the cold pool. Two major SOOP transects within the Middle Atlantic Bight (Southern New England and New York) have been analyzed for the years common to both (1977-81). During the years 1977-81, over 200 transects were occupied, and almost 3,000 XBT's were dropped. Results show that the cold pool is formed with the onset of spring warming and persists until fall overturn, is consistent year to year in both area and weighted average annual temperature, and advects water from the northeast to the southwest. Results also show a 100-d lag in minimum temperature between the Southern New England and New York transects. DitTerences in bathymetry between the two transects and their influence on the cold pool are also discussed. Plots of average (1977-81) bottom temperature for both transects are discussed and show consistent annual weighted mean temperature and areas. Bottom temperature plots for individual years, as well as maximum and minimum bottom temperature plots, are presented as Appendix figures. (PDF file contains 28 pages.)

[EN] Enforcement of rural policy measures within National Parks may have a particular importance as they may contribute to reach socioeconomic objectives devised for such areas. So this paper approaches as case study the application of a relevant rural development measure in the Northumberland National Park (NNP) –England, North East— over the period 2000-2008 in order to explore whether NNP makes any difference in terms of enforcing rural policy measures. The main research findings indicate that NNP may have some sort of positive impact on rural development, but support relying on tourism monoculture may be a background reason for undesired negative consequences.

This brief report concentrates on the effect of low pH on the initial stages of decomposition and the conditioning of incoming particulate carbon or detritus by microbes, particularly certain genera of filamentous bacteria. Although many previous reports have concentrated on bacterial decomposition processes, little attention has been given to the composition of the bacterial community and the role of its component parts, particularly in nutrient-poor waters which are provided with sources of organic carbon and reducing power in the form of poor quality detritus.

The Hall coefficient and resistance in several specimens of an amorphous metallic alloy containing 80 at.% palladium and 20 at.% silicon have been investigated at temperatures between 4.2°K and room temperature. An ideal limiting behavior of these transport coefficients was analyzed on the basis of the nearly free electron model to yield a carrier density of 9 x 1022 cm.-3, or about 1.7 electrons per palladium atom, and a mean free path of about 9Å which is almost constant with temperature. The deviations of the individual specimens from this ideal behavior, which were small but noticeable in the relative resistivity and much greater in the Hall coefficient, can be explained by invoking disk-shaped crystalline regions with low resistivity and a positive Hall coefficient. A detailed calculation shows how a volume fraction of such crystalline material too small to be noticed in X-ray diffraction could have a significant effect on the resistivity and a much greater effect on the Hall coefficient.

Observations were made on crayfish burrows in five locations on the Great Ouse River. The burrow densities and the relative abundance of crayfish were observed. Also, laboratory experiments were carried out in order to study the characteristics and mechanisms of burrowing.

This study looks at the distribution and magnitude of acidification and eutrophication in south-east England where there are no natural lakes but a large number of shallow artificial ponds. The study area is defined as the region lying within a 100 km radius of central London but excluding the area within the M25 motorway. Water samples were taken from 120 sites between mid-January and the end of February 1990, with a subsequent monthly survey of a subset of 31 of these waters. Twelve chemical variables were measured in the laboratory using standard techniques. PH values for the full dataset ranged from 3.2 to 8.4, although the majority of sites had pH values in the range 7.0 to 8.5; only five sites had a pH of less than 6.0. The five low pH sites expectedly had low alkalinities and are the only sites with values below 0.1 meq per litre. Concentrations of calcium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, chloride, sulphate and nitrate had normal distributions. The majority of sites had total phosphorus concentrations in the range 25 to 200 mu g per litre, although 10 sites had concentrations above 400 mu g per litre. The low number of acid sites suggests that surface water acidity is not a widespread regional problem in south-east England. However the survey shows that a large number of standing waters in the region have high total phosphorus and nitrate concentrations, and 89% may be considered moderately to considerably eutrophic.

To date, research on the ecology and conservation of wetland invertebrates has concentrated overwhelmingly on fully aquatic organisms. Many of these spend part of their life-cycle in adjacent terrestrial habitats, either as pupae (water beetles) or as adults (mayflies, dragonflies, stoneflies, caddisflies and Diptera or true-flies). However, wetland specialist species also occur among several families of terrestrial insects (Williams & Feltmate 1992) that complete their whole life-cycle in the riparian zone or on emergent vegetation. There are 441 terrestrial invertebrate species which characteristically occur in riparian habitats along British rivers. Most of these species belong to two families of predatory beetles: the ground beetles (Carabidae) and the rove beetles (Staphylinidae). This paper describes the diversity of ground and rove beetles around ponds, summarises life-histories, hibernation strategies, and morphological and behavioural adaptions.

Although the toxicity of cyanobacteria has been known for many years, cyanobacteria-related problems in the UK were generally limited in frequency. However, this all changed and became of national concern following the exceptional environmental conditions in the autumn of 1989, when widespread cyanobacterial blooms and scums developed in fresh waters. This paper summarises the Environment Agency's monitoring programme for freshwater algae since 1991 and describes the actions the Environment Agency has taken as a result of the monitoring data.

A decline in the abundance of blackback flounders, together with the withdrawal of vessels from this fishery, has resulted in a lowered catch in recent years compared to the peak period 1928 through 1931. Data obtained from U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service Hatchery catch records and from fishermen's log book records show a drop in abundance of 63 per cent from the early 1930's to the present in the Boothbay Harbor region and of 31 to 40 per cent in the area south of Cape Cod. Information on the early life history and distribution of young blackback flounders and the size and age composition and distribution of fish subject to the commercial and sport fisheries indicates that the young are the product of local spawning and that the sport and commercial fisheries draw on a resident stock of primarily adult fish.

The bilayer quantum Hall state at total filling factor νT=1, where the total electron density matches the degeneracy of the lowest Landau level, is a prominent example of Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons. A macroscopically ordered state is realized where an electron in one layer is tightly bound to a "hole" in the other layer. If exciton transport were the only bulk transportmechanism, a current driven in one layer would spontaneously generate a current of equal magnitude and opposite sign in the other layer. The Corbino Coulomb drag measurements presented in this thesis demonstrate precisely this phenomenon.

Excitonic superfluidity has been long sought in the νT=1 state. The tunneling between the two electron gas layers exihibit a dc Josephson-like effect. A simple model of an overdamped voltage biased Josephson junction is in reasonable agreement with the observed tunneling I-V. At small tunneling biases, it exhibits a tunneling "supercurrent". The dissipation is carefully studied in this tunneling "supercurrent" and found to remain small but finite.
