Genetic parameters and relationships of heifer pregnancy and age at first calving with weight gain, yearling and mature weight in Nelore cattle

The objectives of the current study were to investigate the additive genetic associations between heifer pregnancy at 16 months of age (HP16) and age at first calving (AFC) with weight gain from birth to weaning (WG), yearling weight (YW) and mature weight (MW), in order to verify the possibility of using the traits measured directly in females as selection criteria for the genetic improvement of sexual precocity in Nelore cattle. (Co)variance components were estimated by Bayesian inference using a linear animal model for AFC, WG, YW and MW and a nonlinear (threshold) animal model for HP16. The posterior means of direct heritability estimates were: 0.45 +/- 0.02; 0.10 +/- 0.01; 023 +/- 0.02; 0.36 +/- 0.01 and 0.39 +/- 0.04, for HP16, AFC, WG, YW and MW, respectively. Maternal heritability estimate for WG was 0.07 +/- 0.01. Genetic correlations estimated between HP16 and WG, YW and MW were 0.19 +/- 0.04; 0.25 +/- 0.06 and 0.14 +/- 0.05, respectively. The genetic correlations of AFC with WG, YW and MW were low to moderate and negative, with values of -0.18 +/- 0.06; -0.22 +/- 0.05 and -0.12 +/- 0.05, respectively. The high heritability estimated for HP16 suggests that this trait seem to be a better selection criterion for females sexual precocity than AFC. Long-term selection for animals that are heavier at young ages tends to improve the heifers sexual precocity evaluated by HP16 or AFC. Predicted breeding values for HP16 can be used to select bulls and it can lead to an improvement in sexual precocity. First quantized approaches to neutrino oscillations and second quantization

Neutrino oscillations are treated from the point of view of relativistic first quantized theories and compared to second quantized treatments. Within first quantized theories, general oscillation probabilities can be found for Dirac fermions and charged spin 0 bosons. A clear modification in the oscillation formulas can be obtained and its origin is elucidated and confirmed to be inevitable from completeness and causality requirements. The left-handed nature of created and detected neutrinos can also be implemented in the first quantized Dirac theory in the presence of mixing; the probability loss due to the changing of initially left-handed neutrinos to the undetected right-handed neutrinos can be obtained in analytic form. Concerning second quantized approaches, it is shown in a calculation using virtual neutrino propagation that both neutrinos and antineutrinos may also contribute as intermediate particles. The sign of the contributing neutrino energy may have to be chosen explicitly without being automatic in the formalism. At last, a simple second quantized description of the flavor oscillation phenomenon is devised. In this description there is no interference terms between positive and negative components, but it still gives simple normalized oscillation probabilities. A new effect appearing in this context is an inevitable but tiny violation of the initial flavor of neutrinos. The probability loss due to the conversion of left-handed neutrinos to right-handed neutrinos is also presented.

First-order formalism for dark energy and dust

This work deals with a first-order formalism for dark energy and dust in standard cosmology, for models described by a real scalar field in the presence of dust in spatially flat space. The field dynamics may be standard or tachyonic, and we show how the equations of motion can be solved by first-order differential equations. We investigate a model to illustrate how the dustlike matter may affect the cosmic evolution using this framework.

Comparison of the caries-preventive effect of a glass ionomer sealant and fluoride varnish on newly erupted first permanent molars of children with and without dental caries experience

Purpose: This longitudinal clinic study evaluated the effect of a glass ionomer sealant (GIS) and a fluoride varnish (FV) in the prevention of dental decay on newly erupted permanent molars of children with and without caries experience. Materials and methods: Eighty children, aged 6-8 years, with all four newly erupted first permanent molars, were divided into two groups. Group 1 consisted of 53 children without caries experience and group 2 consisted of 27 children with dental caries experience. Permanent molars of the right side were sealed with GIS and the fluoride varnish was applied on the other two permanent first molars. Evaluation of GIS retention and the effectiveness of both materials in the prevention of dental caries were performed after 6, 12 and 18 months. Results: After 18 months, of the 299 teeth, 271 (91%) showed no caries lesions and 28 presented caries lesions (9%). Teeth sealed with GIS had more carious lesions (15) than teeth with fluoride varnish (13). Most of the teeth (70%) that presented carious lesions were in group 2. Of the 138 sealed teeth, only one showed GIS to be totally present, 95 were partially present and 42 teeth were absent. Conclusion: The caries-preventive effect was very similar between both treatments. The presence of dental caries prevailed in the children with caries experience. © 2013 Informa Healthcare.

First-principles simulation of elastic constants and electronic properties of GaN

The electronic and structural properties and elastic constants of the wurtzite phase of GaN, was investigated by computer simulation at Density Functional Theory level, with B3LYP and B3PW hybrid functional. The electronic properties were investigated through the analysis of the band structures and density of states, and the mechanical properties were studied through the calculus of the elastic constants: C11, C33, C44, C12, and C13. The results show that the maximum of the valence band and the minimum of the conduction band are both located at the Γ point, indicating that GaN is a direct band gap semiconductor. The following constants were obtained for B3LYP and B3PW (in brackets): C11 = 366.9 [372.4], C33 = 390.9 [393.4], C44 = 99.1 [96.9], C12 = 143.6 [155.2], and C13 = 107.6 [121.4].

The first report of the qnrB19, qnrS1 and aac(6 ')-Ib-cr genes in urinary isolates of ciprofloxacin-resistant Escherichia coli in Brazil

In this study, we investigated the presence of plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) genes among 101 ciprofloxacin-resistant urinary Escherichia coli isolates and searched for mutations in the quinolone-resistance-determining regions (QRDRs) of the DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV genes in PMQR-carrying isolates. Eight isolates harboured the qnr and aac(6')-Ib-cr genes (3 qnrS1, 1 qnrB19 and 4 aac(6')-Ib-cr). A mutational analysis of the QRDRs in qnr and aac(6')-Ib-cr-positive isolates revealed mutations in gyrA, parC and parE that might be associated with high levels of resistance to quinolones. No mutation was detected in gyrB. Rare gyrA, parC and parE mutations were detected outside of the QRDRs. This is the first report of qnrB19, qnrS1 and aac(6')-Ib-cr-carrying E. coli isolates in Brazil.

First direct mass measurements on nobelium and lawrencium with the Penning trap mass spectrometer SHIPTRAP

Das Penningfallen-Massenspektrometer SHIPTRAP wurde gebaut um HochprÄazi-rnsionsmassenmessungen an schweren Radionukliden durchzufÄuhren, die in Fusions-rnreaktionen produziert und vom Geschwindigkeitsfilter SHIP vom Primärstrahl sepa-rnriert werden. Es besteht aus einer Gaszelle zur Abbremsung der hochenergetis-rnchen Reaktionsprodukte, einem RFQ-Kühler und Buncher zur Kühlung und Akku-rnmulation der Ionen und einem Doppel-Penningfallen-System um Massenmessungenrndurchzuführen. Die Masse wird durch die Messungen der Zyklotronfrequenz desrnentsprechenden Ions in einem starken homogenen Magnetfeld bestimmt. Diese Fre-rnquenz wird mit der Frequenz eines wohlbekannten Referenzions verglichen. Mitrndieser Methode können relative Fehler in der Größenordnung von 10^-8 erreicht werden. Kürzlich konnten die Massen der Nobeliumisotope 252-254No (Z=102) und desrnLawrenciumisotops 255Lr (Z=103) erstmals erfolgreich gemessen werden. Dies warenrndie ersten direkten Massenmessungen an Transuranen. Die Produktionrate dieserrnAtome lag bei etwa eins pro Sekunde und weniger. Die Ergebnisse der Massenmes-rnsungen an Nobelium bestätigen die früheren Massenwerte, die aus Q_alpha-Messungenrnabgeleitet wurden. Im Fall von 255Lr wurde der Massenexzess, der bis dahin nur ausrnsystematischen Trends abgeschätzt wurde, zum ersten Mal direkt bestimmt. DiesernErgebnisse sind ein erster Schritt für die an SHIPTRAP geplante Erforschung derrnRegion der Transurane. Das Hauptziel ist hierbei die Bestimmung der Endpunkternder alpha-Zerfallsketten, die in superschweren Elementen in der Nähe der vorhergesagtenrnStabilitätsinsel ihren Ursprung nehmen.
