Electrochemical processes in industrial effluents have been studied as a means to obtain higher efficiency in wastewater treatment. Heterogeneous photocatalysis appears as a low-cost alternative through the use of lower wattage lamps and thermal TiO2 films. Photocatalysis became a clean process for water treatment due to hydroxyl radicals generated on semiconductor surface. Such radicals are able to degrade several organic compounds. This study used different electrodes and analytical methods for degradation of phenol molecules to reduce treatment costs, improve efficiency, and identify compounds formed during the decomposition of phenolic molecules. Thermal growth of TiO2 film was observed on the titanium electrode in rutile form. Application of an electrical potential on the Ti/TiO2 working electrode increases efficiency in reducing concentration of phenol after photocatalytic treatment. Still, high energy radiation (UVC) showed best degradation rates in photolytic process. Different compounds formed during the degradation of phenol were also identified in the UVC-PE treatment.

The present work illustrates the effect of electrolyte composition on the self-organized TiO2 nanotube arrays electrode preparation. The influence of structural and surface morphology of the TiO2 nanotube-like anode on their photoactivity and photoelectrocatalytic performance was also investigated. TiO2 nanotubular array electrodes are grown by anodization of Ti foil in 0.25wt % NH4F/glycerol/water, but nanowires can be obtained in 4% HF-DMSO as supporting electrolyte, even when both are subjected to electrochemical anodization at 30V during 50 h. The morphological characteristics are analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FEG-SEM). The electrodes were successfully applied in photoelectrocatalytic oxidation of 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODAN) in aqueous solution, as a model of a harmful pollutant. Complete removal of the aromatic amine was obtained after 3 hours of photoelectrocatalytic treatment on nanotubular arrays electrodes.

We present a new strategy for the label-free electrochemical detection of DNA hybridization for detecting hepatitis C virus based on electrostatic modulation of the ion-exchange kinetics of a polypyrrole film deposited at microelectrodes. Synthetic single-stranded 18-mer HCV genotype-1-specific probe DNA has been immobilized at a 2,5-bis(2-thienyl)-N-(3-phosphoryl-n-alkyl)pyrrole film established by electropolymerization at the previously formed polypyrrole layer. HCV DNA sequences (244-mer) resulting from the reverse transcriptase-linked polymerase chain reaction amplification of the original viral RNA were monitored by affecting the ion-exchange properties of the polypyrrole film. The performance of this miniaturized DNA sensor system was studied in respect to selectivity, sensitivity, and reproducibility. The limit of detection was determined at 1.82 x 10(-21) mol L-1. Control experiments were performed with cDNA from HCV genotypes 2a/c, 2b, and 3 and did not show any unspecific binding. Additionally, the influence of the spacer length of 2,5-bis(2-thienyl)-N-(3-phosphoryl-n-alkyl)pyrrole on the behavior of the DNA sensor was investigated. This biosensing scheme was finally extended to the electrochemical detection of DNA at submicrometer-sized DNA biosensors integrated into bifunctional atomic force scanning electrochemical microscopy probes. The 18-mer DNA target was again monitored by following the ion-exchange properties of the polypyrrole film. Control experiments were performed with 12-base pair mismatched sequences.

The electrochemical behavior of SnO2-SbOx, based electrodes, with and without the addition of RuO2, was studied by cyclic voltammetry, service life measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 0.5 M H2SO4 the physical characteristics of these materials were investigated using SEM, EDX and XRD. The resulting cyclic voltammograms obtained using SnO2-SbOx, and SnO2-SbOx-RuO2(x), x = 30, 5, 1 and 0.4 % showed that the OER overpotential decreased with the addition of RuO2. In the repetitive triangular potential voltammetry applied to the SnO2 electrode without and with RuO2 (1%), a higher anodic current is observed during the first potential scan; it is explained in terms of the oxidation of the Ti substrate. The addition of 1% RuO2 increased the service life from 8 to 20 hours at 10 mAcm(-2), while at 50 mAcm(-2) this increase was from 1 to 8 hours. AC Impedance diagrams obtained for the Ti/SnO2-SbOx and Ti/SnO2-SbOx-RuO2 electrodes at the rest potential and at a potential in the OER region can be explained by a single equivalent circuit containing two elements in series. The results showed that the charge transfer resistance and the resistance of the oxide film are lower in the oxide film containing RuO2. Surface analysis of Ti/SnO2-SbOx, revealed that it is relatively porous and formed by clusters of small particles. The Ti/SnO2-SbOx-RuO2 (1%) film is more compact, though. XRD analysis showed that a Sn1-xTixO2 oxide is formed on the Ti/SnO2-SbOx with 1% and without RuO2 electrodes.

The authors investigated the influence of defects on the piezoelectric and dielectric properties of Bi4Ti3O12 (BIT), SrBi4Ti4O15 (SBTi) and CaBi4Ti4O15 (CBTi144) thin films by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy measurements. In the SBTi film, Sr which is a nonpolarizable ion restricting the movement of Ti4+ ions and thus leads to a low piezoresponse. Meanwhile, the oxygen environment is quite different in the BIT and CBTi144 films exhibiting excellent piezoelectric properties. The piezoelectric coefficient and the dielectric behavior were larger for a-b axis oriented than for c axis-oriented films due to the defects created during the films crystallization. Prussian blue [PB, iron(III) hexacyanoferrate(II)] films are effective for the electrocatalysis of the persulfate (peroxodisulfate)/sulfate redox system. This has been exploited in the voltammetric determination of persulfate anions using a PB-modified platinum disc electrode. A linear correlation between electrocatalytic current and persulfate concentration was found for the range 5 x 10(-5) to 3 x 10(-3) mol dm(-3), using 0.100 mol dm(-3) potassium chloride as supporting electrolyte at pH 4. This analytical method has the advantages of speed and ease of operation in relation to traditional titrimetric methods for persulfate determination. The applicability of the method to the determination of persulfate in a commercial hair bleaching 'booster' product is demonstrated. (C) 2000 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work we describe a versatile and very sensitive way for copper quantification by potentiometric stripping analysis using gold electrodes obtained from recordable compact disks (CDs). This new source of electrodes (CDtrodes) shown similar performance to the commercial gold electrodes with superior versatility and lower cost. Recordable CDs contains a highly pure gold film with thickness between 50 and 100 nm and superficial area of ca. 100 cm(2). The working electrode developed was used successfully in stationary cell and many experimental parameters have been optimized. For copper, the detection limit attained was 30 ng L-1 (600 s deposition time) with remarkable precision (standard deviation of 1.8 % for 20 repetitive measurements using 25 mu gL(-1) of copper with 60 s of deposition time). The gold electrode developed was used for analysis of copper in sugar cane spirits and tap water samples. The results were compared with those obtained by atomic absorption spectroscopy.

Mercury thin films prepared by electrochemical deposition on Pt-Ir alloy and after partial removing of mercury at different temperatures were studied by means of an interferometric surface mapping microscope and by X-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy. Mercury film samples having mercury partially removed by anodic stripping at a potential more positive than the corresponding peak in the voltammogram were also studied using the same techniques. For blank samples the surface topographic studies showed well defined grain boundaries. Mercury film samples when heated up to different temperatures showed as material is removed and that the surface roughness decreases as the temperature increases. For samples heated up to 800 degrees C the surface roughness is approximately the same that for the blank. A model for the interphase of volumetric mercury electrodeposited on a Pt-Ir alloy has been proposed using samples both electrochemically and thermally removed of their Hg coatings. The model includes a layered three-region structure, containing at least two Pt-Hg intermetallics: PtHg4 and PtHg2. A substrate modified region, iridium rich, has also been detected. dThe detection of aromatic compounds from pesticides and industrial wastewater has become of great interest, since these compounds withstand chemical oxidation and biological degradation, accumulating in the environment. In this work, a highly sensitive biosensor for detecting catechol was obtained with the immobilization of Cl-catechol 1,2-dioxygenase (CCD) in nanostructured films. CCD layers were alternated with poly(amidoamine) generation 4 (PAMAM G4) dendrimer using the electrostatic layer-by-layer (LbL) technique. Circular dichroism (CD) measurements indicated that the immobilized CCD preserved the same conformation as in solution. The thickness of the very first CCD layers in the LbL films was estimated at ca. 3.6 nm, as revealed by surface plasmon resonance (SPR). PAMAM/CCD 10-bilayer films were employed in detecting diluted catechol solutions using either an optical or electrical approach. Due to the mild immobilization conditions employed, especially regarding the pH and ionic strength of the dipping solutions, CCD remained active in the films for periods longer than 3 weeks. The optical detection comprised absorption experiments in which the formation of cis-cis muconic acid, resulting from the reaction between CCD and catechol, was monitored by measuring the absorbance at 260 nm after film immersion in catechol solutions. The electrical detection was carried out using LbL films deposited onto gold-interdigitated electrodes immersed in aqueous solutions at different catechol concentrations. Using impedance spectroscopy in a broad frequency range (1Hz-1kHz), we could detect catechol in solutions at concentrations as low as 10(-10) M. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Cromoglycate is accumulated on a poly-L-lysine (PLL) modified carbon electrode best from pH 4 solution, where it is anionic and the PLL is cationic, and at which pH the cromoglycate gives a good reduction peak at -0.82 V. The PLL film can be regenerated readily by washing the electrode with 3 M sodium hydroxide solution, in which the PLL is deprotonated. Regeneration of the film is not required as frequently when larger amounts of PLL are incorporated into it. This allows standard addition procedures to be carried out without regenerating the electrode. Linear calibration graphs have been obtained typically in the range 0.1 - 1.5 mug ml(-1). Detection limits have been calculated to be 10 ng ml(-1). The standard addition method has been applied satisfactorily to diluted urine solutions. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

A flow-injection system with a glassy carbon disk electrode modified with Prussian Blue film is proposed for the determination of persulfate in commercial samples of hair bleaching boosters by amperometry. The detection was obtained by chronoamperometric technique and the sample is injected into the electrochemical cell in a wall jet configuration. Potassium chloride at concentration of 0.1 mol L-1 acted as sample carrier at a flow rate of 4.0 mL min-1 and supporting-electrolyte. For 0.025 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) applied voltage, the proposed system handles ca. 160 samples per hour (1.0 10-4 - 1.0 10-3 mol L-1 of persulfate), consuming about 200 μL sample and 11 mg KCl per determination. Typical linear correlations between electrocatalytic current and persulfate concentration was ca. 0.9998. The detection limit is 9.0 10-5 mol L-1 and the calculated amperometric sensibility 3.6 103 μA L mol -1. Relative standard deviation (n =12) of a 1.0 10-4 mol L-1 sample is about 2.2%. The method was applied to persulfate determination in commercial hair-bleaching samples and results are in agreement with those obtained by titrimetry at 95% confidence level and good recoveries (95 - 112%) of spiked samples were found. © 2003 by MDPI.
