A produção de lixo pela humanidade é inevitável, porém, o destino dos residuos sólidos e seu acondicionamento inadequado têm trazido graves problemas ambientais. Dentre os resíduos sólidos, os plásticos merecem destaque, pois cresceram significativamente em uso e descarte, totalizando 20% do volume mundial de lixo. Isto decorre de algumas das propriedades destes materiais, como durabilidade, resistência, leveza e baixo custo de produção. Nas grandes cidades brasileiras, 7% do lixo produzido correspondem a produtos de plástico em filme, geralmente usado em aplicações de curta duração, como o polietileno. Este material persiste no ambiente por décadas, sendo, portanto, resistente à degradação. Diversos destinos podem ser tomados pelo resíduo de polietileno descartado, como a deposição em lixões e aterros sanitários, incineração, reciclagem e biodegradação. A biodegradação pode ser definida como a degradação catalisada por atividade biológica, levando, no final do processo, à mineralização e/ou formação de biomassa. Na natureza, a destruição destes materiais se dá, na verdade, por meio da “degradação ambiental”, na qual atuam sinergeticamente a biodegradação, a fotooxidação, a termo-oxidação e a hidrólise. Neste sentido, desde os anos 1970, diferentes formulações foram propostas para otimizar a susceptibilidade do PE à degradação ambiental. Sabe-se que o PE está sujeito a sofrer mudanças quando exposto à luz ultravioleta e/ou ao calor, e que estas modificações podem alterar a resposta dos microrganismos no processo de biodegradação. Desta forma, este estudo analisou as modificações ocasionadas por tratamentos com luz ultravioleta, calor e exposição ao sol, bem como a resposta da microbiota natural do solo a estes tratamentos, através de análises de espectroscopia... Currently the market share gains and complying fully with the demand in the market is considered essential for the companies survival against the competitors. This work aims to analyze the packing standardization as a strategy to increase production capacity. As result it was implemented a project to standardize the primary packaging of products offered, so it was possible to reduce inventory, increased productivity, improved workload of line operators and decrease the complexity of the planning of the primary packaging and production planning as well, all these factors contributing to cost reduction and increased competitiveness

This research is based on the reflection about the current culture of fruit packages, the standard that states the format and its materials, in the context of a contemporaneous design. It covers space representation issues, material and form representation in addition to the conditioner of the format of the pack as standard load and not the product itself. To analyze the factors related to packaging, we studied the systematic thinking, holistic or ecological and data were arranged in the form of systemic mind maps. The research aims to contribute with information to help in diagnosing the problem in its complexity and interconnected web of factors in order to facilitate better planning of packaging for fruit culture in a future sustainable society.

This paper presents some results of MFI and OIT tests performed on HDPE geomembranes of 0,8 and 2,5 mm that were exposed to weathering effects and leachate after 30 months (2,5 years). The aim of this work is the evaluation of the oxidative degradation process by comparison of fresh and exposed samples results. The expositing and tests were performed according the following standards recommendations: ASTM D1435 (weathering), ASTM D5747 e D5322 (leachate), ASTM D1238 (MFI) e D3895 (OIT). The results shows, for instance, that the MFI values presented high increases on the HDPE (2.5 mm) showing that polymeric chain break occurred for both exposures and, therefore, oxidative degradation. Concerning the OIT values all the geomembranes presented very low values even in the fresh samples. This demonstrates that there wasn’t an antioxidant package appropriate for these membranes.

The constant petrol fuel leak in gas stations has caused concern in many countries around the world. Those fuels have toxic organic compounds in their composition, like Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH), which are harmful to the human health. In this work the efficiency of the protection layer with a High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) membrane of 2.5 mm thickness was evaluated. The study was based in the diffusive process in the intact membrane by a permeameter developed to evaluate the diffusive process. The membrane was putted in the middle of the system to separate two sides: a local soil impregnated with diesel oil (in one side) and pure water (in the other side). The chromatography technique was conducted to evaluate the contamination in the pure water. The analyses were made monthly in a total period of 6 months of research. The results tests show that the membrane was less effective to antracene and naphthalene compounds. Despite that, the results showed that the HDPE membrane is a good alternative to prevent contamination of water and soil by the compounds under study up to one year, based on the performance in the time of study.

The species Artemisia annua L. (Asteraceae) is native to China and has artemisinin as its main active component, substance that is considered a potent antimalarial drug. With the increased interest in natural active principles, studies related to post-harvest and storage of vegetable material become important for better conservation of its phytotherapic properties. Therefore, the present study had as objectivedefine the best storage conditions to preserve and keep the quality of phytotherapic drugs. Leaves of A. annua dried were stored for six months in polyethylene bags wrapped in Kraft paper and packed in four treatments: at ambient condition, refrigerated at 4 ± 2 oC, using normal packing, and using vacuum packing. Samples were taken for microbiological, moisture content, and level of artemisinin analyses before the experiment begun and at 30, 90, 120 and 180 days. The results of microbiological tests showed no significant contamination, as well as the moisture content of the stored (biological) material, which remain between 5% and 10%, keeping within acceptable parameters. The ambient without vacuum treatment (SVA) was the treatment that better maintained the sample stability during 180 days, however, the refrigerated without vacuum (SVR) showed greater efficiency to conserve the content of artemisinin.

In the postharvest management, the fruits can be exposed to injuries that depreciated the quality and the shelf life. Thus, it was evaluated the modified atmosphere effects on guavas var. Paluma subjected to different mechanical damages. Once harvested, the fruits were selected, sanitized and submitted to the treatments T1 (control) - without injuries or packaging in bags of low density polyethylene (LDPE); T2 - without injuries + LDPE bags; T3 - damage by fall of 1 m + LDPE bags; T4 - damage by compression of 9 N + LDPE bags; T5 - damage by fall of 1 m + damage by compression of 9 N + LDPE bags and T6 - damage by fall of 1 m + damage by compression of 9 N without LDPE bags. The treatments were kept in cold storage at 10 ± 1 o C and 94 ± 2% de R.H. The analysis of CO2/ethylene production, enzymatic activity, total and soluble pectins, pulp firmness, titratable acidity (TA), soluble solids (SS), reducing sugars and ascorbic acid were performed every 10 days of refrigeration, and an additional day outside cold storage (22 ± 1o C and 75 ± 3% R.H.) for 30 days. Guavas packed in LDPE bags, not subject to mechanical damage, presented the best quality standards. The fruits suffered only one kind of damage, when packaged, presented satisfactory pattern compared to the fruits without package and not exposed to any mechanical damages. Applying the two kinds of damages, the LDPE packaging was not adequate to decrease the metabolic rate of these fruits, making them unfit for marketing.

BASF SA in partnership with packaging suppliers represent a remarkable scene in the Brazilian market in the agrochemicals sector. In 2014, the Department of Agro from BASF Packaging, identified in its production process certain deformation of its rigid packaging during the filling process of pesticides. This phenomenon is probably caused by the low resistance to compression that the package is used. In order to eliminate the deformation of rigid packaging arising from the filling step, a study will be conducted in conjunction with the supplier JET UNIPAC whose on line problems occurred more frequently. The study is to identify the strength of the rigid containers standardize a compression resistance value at which the package is not deformed after the filling step. This study will present an investigation through experiments combined with theoretical concepts in order to determine possible causes for the emergence of this phenomenon. At the end of the study, a solution to eliminate or reduce to the maximum the packaging deformation problem appears
