This paper traces the development of the Victorian Certificate of Education and in particular the common English Field of Study demonstrating that the VCE is the culmination of many forces acting both within and from outside education. Changes in education are traced and the stimuli for these changes are shown to be economic, social, political and educational.

Hope of education : Somali families and social connection

This thesis examines Somali parents' experience of their children's education after settling in Melbourne following the outbreak of civil war in Somalia in 1991. The research found that Somali parents instigate connections with teachers to generate social capital to enhance their children's education.

Role of school principals within a context of changes in the management of Victorian education 1982-1992

Change occured rapidly and was far reaching in Victoria's educational system in the 1980's and early 1990s. The Labour Party for the first time in 27 years formed a government in 1982. The Educational Minister sought input from many of the groups within the education community and the resulting Ministerial Papers set scence for change. Principles of Victorian Schools were now required to operate within a climate of participative democrary and this brought changes to the way ion which they had been used to operating. As more and more changes took place there were some changes of direction which affected the context within which affected the context within which principals principals operated. How did this affect the role of of the principals? What were the changes in their practices and organisation of work?

Implementation of clinical practice guidelines using simulation in education

Background: Underpinning the Department of Human Services (DHS) “Future directions for Victoria’s maternity services” strategy in Victoria, are the principles of achieving the right balance between primary level care and access to appropriate levels of medical care by making the best use of the complementary skills of midwives, GPs and obstetricians. Planning new models of care have exposed a need to upskill many clinicians in providing evidence based pregnancy care. A statewide education program conducts 1 day workshops to multidisciplinary forums in Victoria. The program content is developed with each service and simulation activities are incorporated in the workshop to provide a realistic environment for practising skills related to the implementation of clinical practice guidelines.

Method: Post workshop surveys are completed anonymously by participants using a five point Likert scale to evaluate their experiences in peer learning, the use of simulation, reflective practice and communication skills training. Open ended responses were analysed thematically.

Results: In 2007, 14 workshops were conducted with 254 clinicians attending. The survey response rate was 80%. Participants responded ‘strongly agree’ or ‘agree’ that the workshop: enhanced their ability to access current pregnancy care research and information 193/ 204(95%), challenged them to think more broadly 192/204(94%), provided an opportunity to reflect on their communication skills during the simulation actives 197/201 (96%) and provided a valuable opportunity for observing the communication skills of their peers 197/ 201(98%).

Conclusion: Providing opportunities for peer learning in pregnancy education is valuable and the use of simulation can play an important role in overcoming barriers to implementing guidelines.

Using the Victorian Curriculum and Standards Framework in music education

This research examined the usefulness of the Victorian Curriculum and Standards Framework as the basis for school music education in Victoria. Interviews with experienced primary and secondary teachers sought to determine the extent to which the Curriculum and Standards Framework had impacted upon their classroom teaching practice and contributed to an understanding of learning in music education.

Contextualising learning through the participatory construction of an environmental education programme

Strengthening links between school and community is critical for improving people's participation in environmental issues. However, Mexican education programmes are generally unrelated to rural students' life experience and are planned without considering either teachers' or students' opinions. This article describes the participatory construction of a preparatory school environmental education (EE) programme in Ixtlan de Juarez, a Mexican indigenous community internationally recognised for sustainable forest management. The qualitative research methods used are based on the action research methodology. Results from interviews conducted with the preparatory school's headmaster, the coordinator, and nine teachers provided the needed documentation of the school site for contextualising learning activities. Feedback during focus groups with six students, three teachers, five local communal authorities, and two researchers highlighted that all participants perceived the need for creating an educational programme focused on local forest management. The contents and activities of the programme were designed by the focus group's participants. The programme has been continuously taught by teachers and forest workers since 2005 and was officially integrated with the preparatory school science curriculum in 2006. This participative educational experience has thus transformed the mandatory school curriculum in Ixtlan.

A snapshot of science education in kindergarten settings

Across Victoria, early childhood practitioners are incorporating science activities into daily experiences for their children. A small research project, which asked teachers to describe what they did in science and how they did it, has highlighted some interesting differences. This paper will describe case studies of four kindergarten settings and some of the experiences undertaken by the children—both as part of the formal program and through incidental play. It will consider these through a socio-cultural framework, noting how teachers used their understandings of play and language theories, to enhance children's understandings in science.

Futures for teachers? Unravelling global agencies development agendas in education and training and lifelong learning

This 20-page paper was presented in June 2001 at an invitational conference hosted by the Education Policy Research Group at Keele University. The theme of the conference was “travelling policy/local spaces: globalisation, identities and education policy in Europe“. The paper is organised in three sections, firstly examining the local impact of the application of a global development agenda on educational practices in Victoria, Australia, then analysing policy texts issued by the OECD, Unesco, and the Word Bank, and finally interpreting the data in the light of interagency politics and the authors‘ reading of the global-local dynamics of the educational restructuring in Victoria.
