Indium doped ZnO films were deposited by the pyrosol process on glass substrates at different temperatures from solutions containing In/Zn molar ratios up to 10%. The nanostructure of the films was investigated using grazing-incidence small angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS). The mass density was determined by X-ray reflectivity and the composition by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The GISAXS measurements revealed an anisotropic pattern for films deposited at 573 and 623 K and a isotropic one for those deposited at higher temperatures. The anisotropic patterns indicate the presence of elongated nanopores with their long axes perpendicular to the film surface. In contrast, the isotropic nature of GISAXS patterns of films grown at high temperatures (673 and 723 K) suggests the presence of spherical voids. The pore size distribution function determined from the isotropic patterns indicates a multimodal size distribution. on the other hand, the measured mass density of the doped films with isotropic nanotexture is higher than that of the anisotropic films while the electric resistivity is significantly lower. This is in agreement with the detected strong reduction of the void density and specific surface area at approximately constant pore size.

Undoped and indium-doped Zinc oxide (ZnO) solid films were deposited by the pyrosol process at 450°C on glass substrates from solutions where In/Zn ratio was 2, 5, and 10 at.%. Electrical measurements performed at room temperature show that the addition of indium changes the resistance of the films. The resistivities of doped films are less than non-doped ZnO films by one to two orders of magnitude depending on the dopant concentration in the solution. Preferential orientation of the films with the c-axis perpendicular to the substrate was detected by X-ray diffraction and polarized extended X-ray absorption fine structures measurements at the Zn K edge. This orientation depends on the indium concentration in the starting solution. The most textured films were obtained for solutions where In/Zn ratio was 2 and 5 at.%. When In/Zn = 10 at.%, the films had a nearly random orientation of crystallites. Evidence of the incorporation of indium in the ZnO lattice was obtained from extended X-ray absorption fine structures at the In and Zn K edges. The structural analysis of the least resistive film (Zn/In = 5 at.%) shows that In substitutes Zn in the wurtzite structure. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

We investigated near-infrared-to-blue upconversion from thulium (Tm 3+) doped in tellurite glasses upon continuous wave excitation near 800 nm. We observed an enhancement of over two orders of magnitude of the upconverted emission at ∼480nm when neodymium (Nd 3+) ions were codoped with Tm 3+ ions. For comparison, using a Tm 3+:Nd 3+ codoped fluorozirconate glass as a reference material we observed a 40-fold enhancement of the blue emission. Analysis of the blue emission for samples with different doping levels of Nd 3+ ions showed that energy transfer between Nd 3+ and Tm 3+ is the mechanism responsible for the enhancement in upconversion. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

We have performed an ab initio theoretical investigation of substitutional Mn(Zn) atoms in planar structures of ZnO, viz., monolayer [(ZnO)(1)] and bilayer [(ZnO)(2)] systems. Due to the 2-D quantum confinement effects, in those Mn -doped (ZnO)(1) and (ZnO)(2) structures, the antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling between (nearest neighbor) Mn(Zn) impurities have been strengthened when compared with the one in ZnO bulk systems. On the other hand, we find that the magnetic state of these systems can be tuned from AFM to FM by adding holes, which can be supplied by a p-type doping or even photoionization processes. Whereas, upon addition of electrons (n-type doping), the system keeps its AFM configuration.

This paper reports on the synthesis (chemical co-precipitation reaction) and characterization (X-ray diffraction, magnetization, and electron paramagnetic resonance) of nanosized Cd1-xMnxS particles with manganese concentration up to x = 0.73. Though the literature reports that nanosized (bulk) CdS can incorporate as much as 30% (50%) of manganese ion within its crystal structure we found manganese segregation at the nanoparticle surface at doping levels as low as 14%. We found that both XRD and magnetization data support the presence of the Mn3O4 phase (observed spin-glass transition around 43 K) at the high manganese doping levels whereas the EPR data strongly suggest preferential incorporation of manganese at the nanoparticle's surface, even at low manganese doping levels. Analyses of the experimental data strongly suggest the preparation of well-defined core/shell (Cd1-xMnxS/Mn3O4) structures at higher levels of manganese doping.

We report on a strategy to prepare metal oxides including binary oxide and mixed metal oxide (MMO) in form of nanometer-sized particles using polymer as precursor. Zinc oxide nanoparticles are prepared as an example. The obtained zinc polyacrylate precursor is amorphous as confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The conversion from polymer precursor to ZnO nanocrystals by thermal pyrolysis was investigated by means of XRD, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and electron microscopy. The as-synthesized ZnO consists of many individual particles with a diameter around 40 nm as shown by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The photoluminescence (PL) and electron paramagnetic (EPR) properties of the material are investigated, too. Employing this method, ZnO nanocrystalline films are fabricated via pyrolysis of a zinc polyacrylate precursor film on solid substrate like silicon and quartz glass. The results of XRD, absorption spectra as well as TEM prove that both the ZnO nanopowder and film undergo same evolution process. Comparing the PL properties of films fabricated in different gas atmosphere, it is assigned that the blue emission of the ZnO films is due to crystal defect of zinc vacancy and green emission from oxygen vacancy. Two kinds of ZnO-based mixed metal oxide (Zn1-xMgxO and Zn1-xCoxO) particles with very precise stoichiometry are prepared by controlled pyrolysis of the corresponding polymer precursor at 550 oC. The MMO crystal particles are typically 20-50 nm in diameter. Doping of Mg in ZnO lattice causes shrinkage of lattice parameter c, while it remains unchanged with Co incorporation. Effects of bandgap engineering are seen in the Mg:ZnO system. The photoluminescence in the visible is enhanced by incorporation of magnesium on zinc lattice sites, while the emission is suppressed in the Co:ZnO system. Magnetic property of cobalt doped-ZnO is checked too and ferromagnetic ordering was not found in our samples. An alternative way to prepare zinc oxide nanoparticles is presented upon calcination of zinc-loaded polymer precursors, which is synthesized via inverse miniemulsion polymerization of the mixture of the acrylic acid and zinc nitrate. The as-prepared ZnO product is compared with that obtained from polymer-salt complex method. The obtained ZnO nanoparticles undergo surface modification via a phosphate modifier applying ultrasonication. The morphology of the modified particles is checked by SEM. And stability of the ZnO nanoparticles in aqueous dispersion is enhanced as indicated by the zeta-potential results.
Improvement of LaBr3:5%Ce scintillation properties by Li+, Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+, and Ba2+ co-doping

This paper reports on the effects of Li+, Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+, and Ba2+ co-doping on the scintillation properties of LaBr3:5%Ce3+. Pulse-height spectra of various gamma and X-ray sources with energies from 8 keV to 1.33 MeV were measured from which the values of light yield and energy resolution were derived. Sr2+ and Ca2+ co-doped crystals showed excellent energy resolution as compared to standard LaBr3:Ce. The proportionality of the scintillation response to gamma and X-rays of Ca2+, Sr2+, and Ba2+ co-doped samples also considerably improves. The effects of the co-dopants on emission spectra, decay time, and temperature stability of the light yield were studied. Multiple thermoluminescence glow peaks, decrease of the light yield at temperatures below 295 K, and additional long scintillation decay components were observed and related to charge carrier traps appearing in LaBr3:Ce3+ with Ca2+, Sr2+, and Ba2+ co-doping.

We report the synthesis and characterization of colored ZnO-based powders via solution combustion reaction of urea and zinc nitrate hexahydrate in varying molar ratios between 1:1 and 10:1. Among other techniques, we employ X-ray diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance, and Raman spectroscopy to characterize the products. Within a narrow range of reactant ratios, we reproducibly find an unidentified, crystalline precursor phase related to isocyanuric acid next to ZnO. Finally, we complement our investigations by performing Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis (PGAA) on selected products in order to directly determine elemental bulk compositions and compare these with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. Our data show traces of nitrogen mainly on the surface of the particles, and thus we question the solution combustion method as a reliable synthesis toward N-doped ZnO. Furthermore, we exclude nitrogen as being responsible for the appearance of the four controversially discussed Raman bands superimposed onto the spectrum of pure ZnO (at 275, 510, 582, and 643 cm–1) and show that the combination of PGAA and XPS is an excellent and complementary method to obtain information about the distribution of the elements in question.

Rare-earth co-doping in inorganic materials has a long-held tradition of facilitating highly desirable optoelectronic properties for their application to the laser industry. This study concentrates specifically on rare-earth phosphate glasses, (R2O3)x(R'2O3)y(P2O5)1-(x+y), where (R, R') denotes (Ce, Er) or (La, Nd) co-doping and the total rare-earth composition corresponds to a range between metaphosphate, RP3O9, and ultraphosphate, RP5O14. Thereupon, the effects of rare-earth co-doping on the local structure are assessed at the atomic level. Pair-distribution function analysis of high-energy X-ray diffraction data (Qmax = 28 Å-1) is employed to make this assessment. Results reveal a stark structural invariance to rare-earth co-doping which bears testament to the open-framework and rigid nature of these glasses. A range of desirable attributes of these glasses unfold from this finding; in particular, a structural simplicity that will enable facile molecular engineering of rare-earth phosphate glasses with 'dial-up' lasing properties. When considered together with other factors, this finding also demonstrates additional prospects for these co-doped rare-earth phosphate glasses in nuclear waste storage applications. This study also reveals, for the first time, the ability to distinguish between P-O and PO bonding in these rare-earth phosphate glasses from X-ray diffraction data in a fully quantitative manner. Complementary analysis of high-energy X-ray diffraction data on single rare-earth phosphate glasses of similar rare-earth composition to the co-doped materials is also presented in this context. In a technical sense, all high-energy X-ray diffraction data on these glasses are compared with analogous low-energy diffraction data; their salient differences reveal distinct advantages of high-energy X-ray diffraction data for the study of amorphous materials. © 2013 The Owner Societies.

Gd2O3:Eu3+ (4 mol%) nanophosphor co-doped with Li+ ions have been synthesized by low-temperature solution combustion technique in a short time. Powder X-ray diffractometer (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), UV-VIS and photoluminescence (PL) techniques have been employed to characterize the synthesized nanoparticles. It is found that the lattice of Gd2O3:Eu3+ phosphor transforms from monoclinic to cubic as the Li+-ions are doped. Upon 254 nm excitation, the phosphor showed characteristic luminescence D-5(0) -> F-7(J) (J= 0-4) of the Eu3+ ions. The electronic transition located at 626 nm (D-5(0) -> F-7(2)) of Eu3+ ions was stronger than the magnetic dipole transition located at 595 nm (D-5(0) -> F-7(1)). Furthermore, the effects of the Li+ co-doping as well as calcinations temperature on the PL properties have been studied. The results show that incorporation of Li+ ions in Gd2O3:Eu3+ lattice could induce a remarkable improvement of their PL intensity. The emission intensity was observed to be enhanced four times than that of with out Li+-doped Gd2O3:Eu3+. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved,

Nanostructured GdxZn1-xO thin films with different Gd concentration from 0% to 10% deposited at 400 degrees C using the NSF technique. The films were characterized by structural, surface and optical properties, respectively. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the Gd doped ZnO films have lattice parameters a = 3.2497 angstrom and c = 5.2018 angstrom with hexagonal structure and preferential orientation along (002) plane. The estimated values compare well with the standard values. When film thickness increases from 222 to 240 nm a high visible region transmittance (>70%) is observed. The optical band gap energy, optical constants (n and k), complex dielectric constants (epsilon(r), and epsilon(i)) and optical conductivities (sigma(r), and sigma(i)) were calculated from optical transmittance data. The optical band gap energy is 3.2 eV for pure ZnO film and 3.6 eV for Gd0.1Zn0.9-O film. The PL studies confirm the presence of a strong UV emission peak at 399 nm. Besides, the UV emission of ZnO films decreases with the increase of Gd doping concentration correspondingly the ultra-violet emission is replaced by blue and green emissions.

Thin films of CexZn1-xO thin films were deposited on glass substrates at 400 degrees C by nebulizer spray pyrolysis technique. Ce doping concentration (x) was varied from 0 to 10%, in steps of 2.5%. X-ray diffraction reveals that all the films have polycrystalline nature with hexagonal crystal structure and high preferential orientation along (002) plane. Optical parameters such as; transmittance, band gap energy, refractive index (n), extinction coefficient (k), complex dielectric constants (epsilon(r), epsilon(i)) and optical conductivity (sigma(r), sigma(i)) have been determined and discussed with respect to Ce concentration. All the films exhibit transmittance above 80% in the wavelength range from 330 to 2500 nm. Optical transmission measurements indicate the decrease of direct band gap energy from 3.26 to 3.12 eV with the increase of Ce concentration. Photoluminescence spectra show strong near band edge emission centered similar to 398 nm and green emission centered similar to 528 nm with excitation wavelength similar to 350 nm. High resolution scanning electron micrographs indicate the formation of vertical nano-rod like structures on the film surface with average diameter similar to 41 nm. Electrical properties of the Ce doped ZnO film have been studied using ac impedance spectroscopy in the frequency range from 100 Hz-1 MHz at different temperatures. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. We report the synthesis and physical property characterization of Prfe(1-x)Co(x)AsO (x=0.0-1.0). The studied samples are synthesized by through the solid state reaction route via the vacuum encapsulation method. The pristine compound PrFeAsO does not show superconductivity, but rather exhibits a metallic step like transition due to spin density wave (SOW) ordering of Fe moments (Fe-SDW) below 150 K, Followed by another upward step due to anomalous ordering of Pr moments (Pr-TN) at 12 K. Both the Fe-SDW and Pr-TN temperatures decrease monotonically with Co substitution at Fe site Superconductivity appears in a narrow range of x from 0.07 to 0.25 with maximum T-c at 11.12 K for x=0.15. Samples with x >= 0.25 exhibit metallic behavior right from 300 K down to 2 K, without any Fe-SDW or Pr-TN steps in resistivity. In fact, though Fe-SDW decreases monotonically, the pr(TN) disappeared even with x=0.02. The magneto transport measurements below 14 Ton superconducting polycrystalline Co doped Pi FeAs0 lead to extrapolated values of the upper critical fields H-c2(0)] of up to 60 T. In the present study, we have synthesized Fe, Co and Ni doped BaTiO3 catalyst by a wet chemical synthesis method using oxalic acid as a chelating agent. The concentration of the metal dopant varies from 0 to 5 mol% in the catalysts. The physical and chemical properties of doped BaTiO3 catalysts were studied using various analytical methods such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), BET surface area and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The acidic strength of the catalysts was measured using a n-butylamine potentiometric titration method. The bulk BaTiO3 catalyst exhibits a tetragonal phase with the P4mm space group. A structural transition from tetrahedral to cubic phase was observed for Fe, Co and Ni doped BaTiO3 catalysts with an increase in doped metal concentration from 1 to 5 mol%. The particle sizes of the catalysts were calculated from TEM images and are in the range of 30-80 nm. All the catalysts were tested for the catalytic reduction of nitrobenzene to azoxybenzene. The BaTiO3 catalyst was found to be highly active and less selective compared to the doped catalysts which are active and highly selective towards azoxybenzene. The increase in selectivity towards azoxybenzene is due to an increase in acidic strength and reduction ability of the doped metal. It was also observed that the nature of the metal dopant and their content at the B-site has an impact on the catalytic reduction of nitrobenzene. The Co doped BaTiO3 catalyst showed better activity with only 0.5 mol% doping than Fe and Ni doped BaTiO3 catalysts with maximum nitrobenzene conversion of 91% with 78% selectivity to azoxybenzene. An optimum Fe loading of 2.5 mol% in BaTiO3 is required to achieve 100% conversion with 93% selectivity whereas Ni with 5 mol% showed a conversion of 93% and a azoxybenzene selectivity of 84%.
