High-quality self-assembled V(2)O(5) nanofiber-bundles (NBs) are synthesized by a simple and direct hydrothermal method using a vanadium(V) hydroxylamido complex as a vanadium source in the presence of HNO(3). The possible reaction pathway for the formation of V(2)O(5) NBs is discussed and demonstrated that HNO(3) functions both as an oxidizing and as an acidification agent. V(2)O(5) NBs are single-crystals of an orthorhombic phase that have grown along the [010] direction. A bundle is made of indefinite numbers of homogeneous V(2)O(5) nanofibers where nanofibers have lengths up to several micrometres and widths ranging between 20 and 50 nm. As-prepared V(2)O(5) NBs display a high electrochemical performance in a non-aqueous electrolyte as a cathode material for lithium ion batteries. Field emission properties are also investigated which shows that a low turn-on field of similar to 1.84 V mu m(-1) is required to draw the emission current density of 10 mu Lambda cm(-2).

[(eta(6)-C(10)H(14))RuCl(mu-Cl)](2) (eta(6)-C(10)H(14) = eta(6)-p-cymene) was subjected to a bridge-splitting reaction with N,N',N `'-triarylguanidines, (ArNH)(2)C=NAr, in toluene at ambient temperature to afford [(eta(6)-C(10)H(14))RuCl{kappa(2)(N,N')((ArN)(2)C-N(H)Ar)}] (Ar = C(6)H(4)Me-4 (1), C(6)H(4)(OMe)-2 (2), C(6)H(4)Me-2 (3), and C(6)H(3)Me(2)-2,4 (4)) in high yield with a view aimed at understanding the influence of substituent(s) on the aryl rings of the guanidine upon the solid-state structure, solution behavior, and reactivity pattern of the products. Complexes 1-3 upon reaction with NaN(3) in ethanol at ambient temperature afforded [(eta(6)-C(10)H(14))RuN(3){kappa(2)(N,N')((ArN)(2)C-N(H)Ar)}] (Ar = C(6)H(4)Me-4 (5), C(6)H(4)(OMe)-2 (6), and C(6)H(4)Me-2 (7)) in high yield. [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of 5-7 with RO(O)C-C C-C(O)OR (R = Et (DEAD) and Me (DMAD)) (diethylacetylenedicarboxylate, DEAD; dimethylacetylenedicarboxylate, DMAD) in CH(2)Cl(2) at ambient temperature afforded [(eta(6)-C(10)H(14))Ru{N(3)C(2)(C(O)OR)(2)}{kappa(2)(N,N')((ArN)(2) C-N(H)Ar)}center dot xH(2)O (x = 1, R = Et, Ar = C(6)H(4)Me-4 (8 center dot H(2)O); x = 0, R = Me, Ar = C(6)H(4)(OMe)-2 (9), and C(6)H(4)Me-2 (10)) in moderate yield. The molecular structures of 1-6, 8 center dot H(2)O, and 10 were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction data. The ruthenium atom in the aforementioned complexes revealed pseudo octahedral ``three legged piano stool'' geometry. The guanidinate ligand in 2, 3, and 6 revealed syn-syn conformation and that in 4, and 10 revealed syn-anti conformation, and the conformational difference was rationalized on the basis of subtle differences in the stereochemistry of the coordinated nitrogen atoms caused by the aryl moiety in 3 and 4 or steric overload caused by the substituents around the ruthenium atom in 10. The bonding pattern of the CN(3) unit of the guanidinate ligand in the new complexes was explained by invoking n-pi conjugation involving the interaction of the NHAr/N(coord)Ar lone pair with C=N pi* orbital of the imine unit. Complexes 1, 2, 5, 6, 8 center dot H(2)O, and 9 were shown to exist as a single isomer in solution as revealed by NMR data, and this was ascribed to a fast C-N(H)Ar bond rotation caused by a less bulky aryl moiety in these complexes. In contrast, 3 and 10 were shown to exist as a mixture of three and five isomers in about 1:1:1 and 1.0:1.2:2:7:3.5:6.9 ratios, respectively in solution as revealed by a VT (1)H NMR, (1)H-(1)H COSY in conjunction with DEPT-90 (13)C NMR data measured at 233 K in the case of 3. The multiple number of isomers in solution was ascribed to the restricted C-N(H)(o-tolyl) bond rotation caused by the bulky o-tolyl substituent in 3 or the aforementioned restricted C-NH(o-tolyl) bond rotation as well as the restricted ruthenium-arene(centroid) bond rotation caused by the substituents around the ruthenium atom in 10.

New 2-chloro-3-formyl quinoline oxime esters were synthesized by the reaction of 2-chloro-3-formyl quinoline oximes with various benzoyl chlorides in the presence of triethyl amine and dichloromethane at 0 degrees C. The DNA photo cleavage studies of some new oxime esters were investigated by neutral agarose gel electrophoresis at different concentrations (40 mu M and 80 mu M). Analysis of the cleavage products in agarose gel indicated that few of quinoline oxime esters (3d-i) converted into supercoiled pUC19 plasmid DNA to its nicked or linear form. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. The transition metal complexes of salicylhydrazone of anthranilhydrazide (H2L) were synthesised. The structures of metal complexes were characterized by various spectroscopic [IR, NMR, UV-Vis, EPR], thermal and other physicochemical methods. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction study of [Cu(HL)Cl]center dot H2O reveal its orthorhombic system with space group P2(1)2(1)2 and Z=4. The copper center has a distorted square planar geometry with ONO and Cl as the donor atoms. The ligand and its metal chelates have been screened for their antimicrobial and anti-tubercular activities using serial dilution method. Metal complexes in general have exhibited better antibacterial and antifungal activity than the free ligand and in few cases better than the standard used. Among the bacterial strains used, the complexes are highly potent against Gram-positive strains compared to Gram-negative. Anti-tubercular activity exhibited by the Co(II) complex is comparable with the standard used. (C) 2011 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

A method to convert 2-hydroxy glycol ester to the corresponding corresponding 2-deoxy-2-C-alkyl glycol in a facile manner, through key reactions including (i) C-allylation at C-1, (ii) Wittig reaction, and (iii) Cope rearrangement of a 1,5-diene derivative, is reported. The alpha-anomer of the 1,5-diene derivative underwent Cope rearrangement to afford 2-deoxy-2-C-glycal derivative, whereas the beta-anomer was found to be unreactive. Employing this sequence, was transformed to 3,4,6-tri-O-benzyl-2-deoxy-2-C-alkyl-1,5-anhydro-D-arabino-hex-1-enitol. 2-Deoxy-2-C-alkyl glycol derivative is a suitable glycosyl donor to prepare 2-deoxy-2-C-alkyl glycosides, mediated through haloglycosylation and a subsequent dehalogenation. A number of 2-deoxy-2-C-alkyl glycosides, with both glycosyl and nonglycosyl moieties at the reducing end, are thus prepared from the glycol.

Surfactant protein A (SP-A), which is a lung innate immune system component, is known to bind glycolipids present at the cell surface of a mycobacterial pathogen. Lipoarabinomannan (LAM), a component of mycobacterial thick, waxy cell wall, is one of the glycolipid ligands for SP-A. In order to assess binding of synthetic glycolipids with SP-A and the glycosidic linkage preferences for the interaction, beta-arabinofuranoside trisaccharide glycolipids constituted with beta-(1 -> 2), beta-(1 -> 3) and beta-(1 -> 2), beta-(1 -> 5) linkages relevant to LAM were synthesized through chemical glycosylations. The efficacies of synthetic glycolipids to interact with SP-A were assessed by using the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technique, from which association-dissociation rate constants and equilibrium binding constants were derived. The equilibrium binding constants of the interaction of two constitutionally varying beta-arabinofuranoside glycolipids with SP-A were found to be in the millimolar range. A comparison of the results with few alpha-anomeric arabinofuranoside glycolipids showed that glycolipids with beta-anomeric linkages were having relatively lower equilibrium binding constants than those with alpha-anomeric linkages in binding to the protein, whereas oligosaccharides alone, without lipidic chains, exhibited higher equilibrium binding constants. Further, the synthetic compounds inhibited the growth of mycobacteria and affected sliding motilities of the bacteria, although to an extent relatively lesser than that of synthetic compounds constituted with alpha-anomeric linkages.

Condensation reaction involving substituted aminobenzoic acids (2-aminobenzoic acid and 4-aminobenzoic acid) and acetylacetone results in the formation of ketoimines [CH3C(= O)CH2C(CH3)(= NAr)] (Ar = C6H4COOH-4; 1 and C6H4COOH-2 2). Compounds 1 and 2 have been characterized by spectroscopic techniques and by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The absorption, emission and lifetime measurement studies have also been performed for the new compounds. While compound 1 forms a linear chain type of aggregation though intermolecular hydrogen bonding, compound 2 forms a discrete dimer in the solid state.

Divalent metal complexes of general formula M(2-nb)(2)(mc)(2)].2(2-nbH), where M = Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) or Zn(II), 2-nbH = 2-nitrobenzoic acid and mc = methyl carbazate (NH2NHCOOCH3), have been prepared and characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic methods. Single-crystal X-ray study of the Cu(II) complex revealed that the molecule is centrosymmetric, with two N,O-chelating mc ligands in equatorial positions and a pair of monodentate 2-nb anions in the axial positions. The lattice 2-nbH molecules help to establish the packing of monomers through hydrogen-bonding interactions. Thermal stability and reactivity of the complexes were studied by TG-DTA. Emission studies show that these complexes are fluorescent.

Taurine conjugates of two cholic acid derived oligomers with different spacers between the cholic acid units were synthesized. These molecules self-assemble in aqueous media. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) values were measured by using fluorescence spectroscopic analysis and the aggregates were characterized by dynamic light scattering and electron microscopy. The cooperativity of the cholic acid units in these tetramers to solubilize cholesterol was investigated. The ability of these molecules to act as nanocarriers for liphophilic dyes was also studied.

In search for a new antioxidant and antimicrobial agent with improved potency, we synthesized a series of benzofuran based 1,3,5-substituted pyrazole analogues (5a-l) in five step reaction. Initially, o-alkyl derivative of salicyaldehyde readily furnish corresponding 2-acetyl benzofuran 2 in good yield, on treatment with 1,8-diaza bicyclo5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) in the presence of molecular sieves. Further, aldol condensation with vanillin, Claisen-Schmidt condensation reaction with hydrazine hydrate followed by coupling of substituted anilines afforded target compounds. The structures of newly synthesized compounds were confirmed by IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, mass, elemental analysis and further screened for their antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Among the tested compounds 5d and 5f exhibited good antioxidant property with 50% inhibitory concentration higher than that of reference while compounds 5h and 5l exhibited good antimicrobial activity at concentration 1.0 and 0.5 mg/mL compared with standard, streptomycin and fluconazole respectively. Thiourea-based antithyroid drugs are effectively used for the treatment of hyperthyroidism. In this paper, we describe the synthesis of new trisulfides (11-12) from the commonly used thiourea-based antithyroid drugs such as 6-n-propyl-2-thiouracil (PTU) and 6-methyl-2-thiouracil (MTU) in the reaction with I-2/KI system. Structural analysis by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed the stabilization of trisulfides by a lactam-lactim tautomerism facilitating effective intramolecular as well as intermolecular non-covalent interactions. Although the structures of both trisulfides were found to be quite similar, a notable difference in the intermolecular interactions was observed between compounds 11 and 12 leading to different structural patterns. Structural stabilization of these trisulfides by tautomerism followed by intramolecular as well as intermolecular H-bonds makes these molecules as perfect examples in molecular recognition with self-complementary donor and acceptor units within a single molecule. Tert-butyl 2,2-bis(2,4-dinitrophenyl)ethanoate was prepared from the ethanolic solution of 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene, tert-butyl 3-oxobutanoate and triethylamine. Acetyl group in tert-butyl 3-oxobutanoate has cleaved off during the formation of the title molecule. UV-VIS, IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, Proton-Proton COSY data and single crystal XRD results support the proposed structure. Flammability test, impact sensitivity test and TG/DTA studies at different heating rates on the synthesized molecule imply that it is an insensitive high energy density material.

Treatment of the chloro-substituted diboradiferrocene derivative 1 with Me3SiOMe and subsequent hydrolysis resulted in formation of the novel organometallic bis(borinic acid) derivative 3. The assembly of 3 into supramolecular structures via hydrogen bonding and reversible covalent boron-oxygen bond formation was explored. Upon crystallization from acetone or THF one-dimensional chains form in which molecules of 3 alternately serve as hydrogen bond donors and acceptors. The additional OH hydrogens that are not involved in hydrogen bonding within the polymeric chains undergo hydrogen bonding to the solvent molecules. Removal of the solvent was achieved at moderate temperature under high vacuum. While the polymeric chains remain intact, in the absence of the solvent as a hydrogen bond acceptor, short contacts to the Cp rings of neighboring polymer strands lead to a network-like structure. At higher temperatures, further dehydration occurs with formation of B-O-B linkages as confirmed by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Oligomers with up to 15 repeating units (30 ferrocenes) were detected.
