Purpose. To compare the intraocular pressure (IOP) before and after Laser In Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK), measured by Diaton, Perkins, and noncontact air pulse tonometers. Methods. Fifty-seven patients with a mean age of 34.88 were scheduled for myopia LASIK treatment. Spherical equivalent refraction (SER), corneal curvature (K), and central corneal thickness (CCT) and superior corneal thickness (SCT) were obtained before and after LASIK surgery. IOP values before and after surgery were measured using Diaton, Perkins, and noncontact air pulse tonometers. Results. The IOP values before and after LASIK surgery using Perkins tonometer and air tonometers were statistically significant (). However, no significant differences were found () for IOP values measured with Diaton tonometer. CCT decreases significantly after surgery () but no statistical differences were found in SCT (). Correlations between pre- and postsurgery were found for all tonometers used, with and for the air pulse tonometer, and for Perkins, and and for Diaton. Conclusion. Transpalpebral tonometry may be useful for measuring postsurgery IOP after myopic LASIK ablation because this technique is not influenced by the treatment.

Embora a sazonalidade climática seja menos evidente nas regiões tropicais que nas temperadas, muitas espécies tropicais apresentam crescimento rítmico. A avaliação do crescimento em circunferência do tronco (CCT) permitirá obter informações sobre o desenvolvimento dos indivíduos de espécies arbóreas desta região. Esse estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o CCT de 11 espécies arbóreas de uma floresta estacional semidecidual no sul do Brasil, visando testar duas hipóteses: (i) existe sazonalidade no CCT das árvores e este crescimento está relacionado às variações climáticas da região de estudo; (ii) as características dos indivíduos (posição sociológica, altura da árvore, grau de ocupação por lianas, deciduidade e diâmetro à altura do peito) influenciam no incremento acumulado em circunferência. Para detectar a periodicidade do CCT foram implantadas faixas dendrométricas permanentes no tronco (altura do DAP) de 156 indivíduos. O acompanhamento do crescimento foi realizado mensalmente por um período de 18 meses. Foram feitas correlações do CCT mensal com a precipitação, temperatura e fotoperíodo para verificar a influencia dos fatores ambientais e análise de covariância para averiguar se as características dos indivíduos também interferiram no incremento acumulado em circunferência do tronco. As espécies apresentaram um padrão sazonal de CCT, com as maiores taxas de crescimento de outubro a dezembro, sendo que os parâmetros ambientais avaliados atuaram em conjunto - principalmente o fotoperíodo e a temperatura - promovendo essa sazonalidade e confirmando a primeira hipótese. Considerando as características dos indivíduos, somente o diâmetro do tronco correlacionou-se negativamente com o incremento acumulado em circunferência (b = -0,32; p = 0,02), aceitando parcialmente a segunda hipótese.

Recent years have seen an increased acceptance of social transfers as part of renewed efforts at poverty alleviation policies based on social risk management. There has been an instance in the use and promotion of conditional cash transfer (CCT) policies by multilateral development agencies (MDAs). One case is the Philippines. The ideational basis of CCTs can be traced to the influence of neostructuralism in Latin America. One facet of this was an attempt to reconcile neoliberal strategies of development with aspirations for guaranteed minimum incomes. The adoption of CCTs was mediated by MDA s that further reduced the modest concessions to poor people's rights implicit in Latin American programs. The Philippines demonstrates that MDAs have promoted a more heavily securitised and compliance-focused versions of CCTs that was derived the Colombian security state. Although small grants are welcomed by poor households, they have acted to further enforce state control while maintaining a neoliberal policy focus.

BACKGROUND: The Hall Technique (HT) is a carious primary molar treatment that does not require local analgesia, carious tissue removal or tooth preparation. The carious lesions in carefully selected teeth are sealed with a stainless steel crown (preformed metal crown). The study aims are to determine the clinical effectiveness, acceptability and cost-effectiveness of the HT for management of carious lesions in young dental patients. METHODS/DESIGN: Children, aged 3-7years, with a primary molar tooth with a carious lesion extending no further than the middle third of dentine, with no signs or symptoms of pulp inflammation or infection, and attending one of three community agencies are recruited. Target sample size is 220. A control tooth with an intra-coronal restoration is sourced from the same mouth. The primary outcome is the period of time free from further treatment. The assessments are scheduled at 6, 12 and 24months. In addition to the clinical assessment, acceptability of the HT will be assessed via questionnaires among patients and their primary carers at baseline, 6, 12 and 24months. Cost-outcome description and cost-effectiveness analysis from healthcare provider and societal perspective will be conducted. DISCUSSION: The clinical effectiveness, acceptability and cost-effectiveness of the HT in the community dental setting will be evaluated. The results of this study will determine the implementation of HT in the management of dental caries in young children.

In the present study, investigations are focused on microstructural evolution and the resulting hardness during continuous cooling transformation (CCT) in a commercial vanadium microalloyed steel (30MSV6). Furthermore, the effects of cooling rate and austenite grain size (AGS) on CCT behavior of the steel have been studied by employing high-resolution dilatometry. Quantitative metallography accompanied with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has efficiently confirmed the dilatometric measurements of transformation kinetics and austenite decomposition products. A semi-empirical model has been proposed for prediction of microstructural development during austenite decomposition of the steel and the resultant hardness. The model consists of 8 sub-models including ferrite transformation start temperature, ferrite growth, pearlite start temperature, pearlite growth, bainite start temperature, bainite growth, martensite start temperature and hardness. The transformed fractions of ferrite, pearlite and bainite have been described using semi-empirical Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov (JMAK) approach in combination with Scheil's equation of additivity. The JMAK rate parameter for bainite has been formulated using a diffusion-controlled model. Predictions of the proposed model were found to be in close agreement with the experimental measurements.

An inverse model is proposed to construct the mathematical relationship between continuous cooling transformation (CCT) kinetics with constant rates and the isothermal one. The kinetic parameters in JMAK equations of isothermal kinetics can be deduced from the experimental CCT kinetics. Furthermore, a generalized model with a new additive rule is developed for predicting the kinetics of nucleation and growth during diffusional phase transformation with arbitrary cooling paths based only on CCT curve. A generalized contribution coefficient is introduced into the new additivity rule to describe the influences of current temperature and cooling rate on the incubation time of nuclei. Finally, then the reliability of the proposed model is validated using dilatometry experiments of a microalloy steel with fully bainitic microstructure based on various cooling routes.

Purpose: to determine whether pupil dilation affects biometric measurements and intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation made using the new swept-source optical coherence tomography-based optical biometer (IOLMaster 700©; Carl Zeiss Meditec, Jena, Germany). Procedures: eighty-one eyes of 81 patients evaluated for cataract surgery were prospectively examined using the IOLMaster 700© before and after pupil dilation with tropicamide 1%. The measurements made were: axial length (AL), central corneal thickness (CCT), aqueous chamber depth (ACD), lens thickness (LT), mean keratometry (MK), white-to-white distance (WTW) and pupil diameter (PD). Holladay II and SRK/T formulas were used to calculate IOL power. Agreement between measurement modes (with and without dilation) was assessed through intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and Bland-Altman plots. Results: mean patient age was 75.17 ± 7.54 years (range: 57–92). Of the variables determined, CCT, ACD, LT and WTW varied significantly according to pupil dilation. Excellent intraobserver correlation was observed between measurements made before and after pupil dilation. Mean IOL power calculation using the Holladay 2 and SRK/T formulas were unmodified by pupil dilation. Conclusions: the use of pupil dilation produces statistical yet not clinically significant differences in some IOLMaster 700© measurements. However, it does not affect mean IOL power calculation.

Purpose To compare measurements taken using a swept-source optical coherence tomography-based optical biometer (IOLmaster 700) and an optical low-coherence reflectometry biometer (Lenstar 900), and to determine the clinical impacts of differences in their measurements on intraocular lens (IOL) power predictions. Methods Eighty eyes of 80 patients scheduled to undergo cataract surgery were examined with both biometers. The measurements made using each device were axial length (AL), central corneal thickness (CCT), aqueous depth (AQD), lens thickness (LT), mean keratometry (MK), white-to-white distance (WTW), and pupil diameter (PD). Holladay 2 and SRK/T formulas were used to calculate IOL power. Differences in measurement between the two biometers were determined using the paired t-test. Agreement was assessed through intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and Bland–Altman plots. Results Mean patient age was 76.3±6.8 years (range 59–89). Using the Lenstar, AL and PD could not be measured in 12.5 and 5.25% of eyes, respectively, while IOLMaster 700 took all measurements in all eyes. The variables CCT, AQD, LT, and MK varied significantly between the two biometers. According to ICCs, correlation between measurements made with both devices was excellent except for WTW and PD. Using the SRK/T formula, IOL power prediction based on the data from the two devices were statistically different, but differences were not clinically significant. Conclusions No clinically relevant differences were detected between the biometers in terms of their measurements and IOL power predictions. Using the IOLMaster 700, it was easier to obtain biometric measurements in eyes with less transparent ocular media or longer AL.

Previous coflow scheduling proposals improve the coflow completion time (CCT) over per-flow scheduling based on prior information of coflows, which makes them hard to apply in practice. State-of-art information-agnostic coflow scheduling solution Aalo adopts Discretized Coflow-aware Least-Attained-Service (D-CLAS) to gradually demote coflows from the highest priority class into several lower priority classes when their sent-bytes-count exceeds several predefined demotion thresholds. However, current design standards of these demotion thresholds are crude because they do not analyze the impacts of different demotion thresholds on the average coflow delay. In this paper, we model the D-CLAS system by an M/G/1 queue and formulate the average coflow delay as a function of the demotion thresholds. In addition, we prove the valley-like shape of the function and design the Down-hill searching (DHS) algorithm. The DHS algorithm locates a set of optimal demotion thresholds which minimizes the average coflow delay in the system. Real-data-center-trace driven simulations indicate that DHS improves average CCT up to 6.20× over Aalo.

In current data centers, an application (e.g., MapReduce, Dryad, search platform, etc.) usually generates a group of parallel flows to complete a job. These flows compose a coflow and only completing them all is meaningful to the application. Accordingly, minimizing the average Coflow Completion Time (CCT) becomes a critical objective of flow scheduling. However, achieving this goal in today's Data Center Networks (DCNs) is quite challenging, not only because the schedule problem is theoretically NP-hard, but also because it is tough to perform practical flow scheduling in large-scale DCNs. In this paper, we find that minimizing the average CCT of a set of coflows is equivalent to the well-known problem of minimizing the sum of completion times in a concurrent open shop. As there are abundant existing solutions for concurrent open shop, we open up a variety of techniques for coflow scheduling. Inspired by the best known result, we derive a 2-approximation algorithm for coflow scheduling, and further develop a decentralized coflow scheduling system, D-CAS, which avoids the system problems associated with current centralized proposals while addressing the performance challenges of decentralized suggestions. Trace-driven simulations indicate that D-CAS achieves a performance close to Varys, the state-of-the-art centralized method, and outperforms Baraat, the only existing decentralized method, significantly.
