Coordination-Driven Self-Assembly of 2D-Metallamacrocycles Using a New Carbazole-Based Dipyridyl Donor: Synthesis, Characterization, and C-60 Binding Study

A new carbazole-based 90 degrees dipyridyl donor 3,6-di(4-pyridylethynyl)carbazole (L) containing carbazole-ethynyl functionality is synthesized in reasonable yield using the Sonagashira coupling reaction. Multinuclear NMR, electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), including single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis characterized this 90 degrees building unit. The stoichiometry combination of L with several Pd(II)/Pt(II)-based 90 degrees acceptors (1a-1d) yielded 2 + 2] self-assembled metallacycles (2a-2d) under mild conditions in quantitative yields 1a = cis-(dppf)Pd(OTf)(2); 1b = cis-(dppf)Pt(OTf)(2); 1c = cis-(tmen)Pd(NO3)(2); 1d = 3,6-bis{trans-Pt(C C) (PEt3)(2)(NO3))carbazole]. All these macrocycles were characterized by various spectroscopic techniques, and the molecular structure of 2a was unambiguously determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Incorporation of ethynyl functionality to the carbazole backbone causes the resulted macrocycles (2a-2d) to be pi-electron rich and thereby exhibit strong emission characteristics. The macrocycle 2a has a large internal concave aromatic surface. The fluorescence quenching study suggests that 2a forms a similar to 1:1 complex with C-60 with a high association constant of K-sv = 1.0 X 10(5) M-1.

Saline water intrusion from deep artesian sources in McGregor Isles area of Lee County, Florida

Upward leakage of saline water from an artesian aquifer below 1,500 feet has caused an increase in chloride concentration in the lower Hawthorn aquifer from less than 1,000 mg/1 (milligrams per liter) to values ranging from about 1,300 to 15,000 mg/1. Similarly the higher temperatures of the intruding water has caused an increase in water temperatures in the aquifer from 82"F to values ranging from 83 to 93"F. The intruding water moves upward either through the open bore hole of deep wells or test holes, or along a fault or fracture system, which has been identified in the area. From these points of entry into the lower Hawthorn aquifer, the saline water spreads laterally toward the south and southeast, but is generally confined to components of the fault system. The saline water moves upward from the lower Hawthorn aquifer into the upper Hawthorn aquifer through the open bore hole of wells, which connect the aquifers. This movement has resulted in an increase in chloride from less than 200 mg/1 in the unaffected parts of the upper Hawthorn aquifer to values commonly ranging from about 300 to more than 3,000 mg/1 in parts of the aquifer affected by upward leakage. The upper Hawthorn aquifer is the principal source of ground-water supply for public water-supply systems in western Lee County. Similar effects have been noted in the water-table aquifer, where chloride increased from less than 100 to concentrations ranging from about 500 to more than 5,000 mg/1. This was caused by the downward infiltration of water discharged at land surface from wells tapping the lower Hawthorn aquifer. A função educativa da Seção de Extensão Cultural do Museu Nacional na gestão do Educador Paschoal Lemme (1943-1946)

Esta dissertação buscou compreender o papel educativo desempenhado pela Seção de Extensão Cultural (SEC) do Museu Nacional entre os anos de 1943 a 1946, período em que o educador e signatário do Manifesto dos Pioneiros da Educação Nova Paschoal Lemme ocupou a chefia desta Seção. Interessou-nos estudar os aspectos que contribuíram para o fortalecimento da função educativa do Museu, buscando identificar possíveis pontos de aproximação entre as atividades museais desenvolvidas pela SEC e as aspirações pedagógicas do movimento da Escola Nova. Criada por Regimento Interno de 1941, durante a gestão institucional da antropóloga Heloísa Alberto Torres, este departamento estruturava-se em três serviços específicos: o Serviço de Exposições, o Serviço de Publicações e o Serviço de Assistência ao Ensino, nos quais se proclamava como objetivo comum a vulgarização dos conhecimentos científicos e a difusão das estratégias de um ensino dinâmico e prático dos saberes científicos. Auxiliou-nos na apreensão deste objeto o diálogo com as análises construídas por Santos (2008), Berrio (2001), Peixoto (2005), Chagas (2009), Meneses (1994) e Pessanha (1988) acerca da educação como um processo de preservação, produção e comunicação de conhecimentos constitutivos dos patrimônios culturais, consolidando-se, a partir desta perspectiva, não apenas em espaços ditos escolares de formação, mas também em espaços não formais de ensino, a exemplo dos museus e de outras instituições de Cultura. As pesquisas de Sá e Domingues (1996), Pereira (2010), Sily (2012), Sily; Santos (2011), Duarte (2004) e Rangel (2011) foram fundamentais para a compreensão das dimensões e funções educativas do Museu Nacional. Constatamos que a Seção de Extensão Cultural se constituiu entre os anos de 1943 a 1946, como um veículo de difusão dos ideais museais e pedagógicos do movimento da Educação Nova, através da publicação de periódicos destinados especialmente para o público escolar, de aulas práticas realizadas no interior do Museu Nacional, além de visitas de especialistas a instituições de ensino com o objetivo de organizar museus escolares.

The history and research results of the East African Freshwater Fisheries Research Organization from 1946 - 1966.

Continuous research on the freshwater fisheries industry in East Africa, in common with most other African countries, did not commence until the end of the Second World War in 1945. Before the war some work on the fishes and hydrobiology of the lakes of East Africa had been undertaken by a series of scientific expeditions, which were sent out from Europe, between the years 1896 and 1939. These expeditions usually lasted for only a few months, and the collected data were published by young graduates and undergraduates, including such people as Mr. L. C. Beadle, (lately Professor Beadle of Makerere), Mr. V. E. Fuchs (now Sir Vivian Fuchs) and Mr. E. B. Worthington of Gonville and Caius College,Cambridge. Later. Dr. Worthington became Scientific Secretary to the Scientific Council for Africa, Scientific Secretary to the East African High Commission, and played a very large part in the furtherance of fisheries research and management in East Africa.

Stejnulxin, a novel snake C-type lectin-like protein with potent platelet activating activity, was purified and characterized from Trimeresurus stejnegeri venom. Under non-reducing conditions, it migrated on a SDS-polyacrylamide gel with an apparent molecular mass of 120 kDa. On reduction, it separated into three polypeptide subunits with apparent molecular masses of 16 kDa (alpha), 20 kDa (beta(1)) and 22 kDa (beta(2)), respectively. The complete amino acid sequences of its subunits were deduced from cloned cDNAs. The N-terminal sequencing and cDNA cloning indicated that beta(1) and beta(2) subunits of stejnulxin have identical amino acid sequences and each contains two N-glycosylation sites. Accordingly, the molecular mass difference between 1 and 2 is caused by glycosylation heterogenity. The subunit amino acid sequences of stejnulxin are similar to those of convulxin, with sequence identities of 52.6% and 66.4% for the U. and beta, respectively. Stejnulxin induced human platelet aggregation in a dose-dependent manner. Antibodies against UNA inhibited the aggregation response to stejnulxin, indicating that activation of alpha(IIb)beta(3) and binding of fibrinogen are involved in stejnulxin-induced platelet aggregation. Antibodies against GPIbalpha or alpha(2)beta(1) as well as echicetin or rhodocetin had no significant effect on stejnulxin-induced platelet aggregation. However, platelet activation induced by stejnulxin was blocked by anti-GPVI antibodies. In addition, stejnulxin induced a tyrosine phosphorylation profile in platelets that resembled that produced by convulxin. Biotinylated stejnulxin bound specifically to platelet membrane GPVI.

Photoluminescence of aggregated C-60 in nano-size at room temperature

When the aggregation of C-60 is arranged in mono-dispersed state on the ITO substrate, the photoluminescence (PL) spectra are observed clearly. These emission peaks are attributed to recombination of self - trapped excitons, the zero-phonon exciton (R-0) and its phonon replicas.

Structures and vibrational spectra of C-2 and LaC2+ clusters

C-2 and LaC2+ were studied using Hartree-Fock(HF), B3LYP (Becke 3-paremeter-Lee-Yang-Parr) density functional method, second-order Moller-Plesset perturbation (MP2) and coupled cluster singles and doubles with non-iterative triples(CCSD(T)) methods. The basis set employed was LANL1DZ. Geometries, vibrational frequencies and other quantities were reported. The results showed that for C-2, all the methods performed well for low spin state (singlet), while only HF and B3LYP remained so for high spin state (triplet). For LaC2+, four isomers were presented and fully optimized. The results suggested that linear isomers with C-infinity v and D-infinity h symmetries were predicted to be saddle points on the energy surface for all the methods, while for isomers with C-2 upsilon and C-s symmetries, they were local minima except C-2 upsilon at B3LYP level, and were isoenergetic at HF, MP2 and CCSD(T) levels, near isoenergetic at B3LYP level. From the differences between HOMO and LUMO, it is also known that the isomers with C-2 upsilon and C-s symmetries offer the largest values and therefore correspond to the most stable structure. Epitaxial growth of non-c-oriented ferroelectric SrBi2Ta2O9 thin films on Si(100) substrates

Epitaxial SrBi2Ta2O9 (SBT) thin films with well-defined (116) orientation have been grown by pulsed laser deposition on Si(100) substrates covered with an yttria-stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ) buffer layer and an epitaxial layer of electrically conductive SrRuO3. Studies on the in-plane crystallographic relations between SrRuO3 and YSZ revealed a rectangle-on-cube epitaxy with respect to the substrate. X-ray diffraction pole figure measurements revealed well defined orientation relations, viz. SBT(116)\\ SrRuO3(110)\\ YSZ(100)\\ Si(100), SBT[110]\\ SrRuO3[001], and SrRuO3[111]\\ YSZ[110]\\ Si[110].
