Observation of manganese nodules and crusts in the Blake Plateau area

Visual observations of manganese deposits on the Blake plateau from a manned submersible indicate that the occurrence of manganese as nodules, slabs, or pavement may be related to localized environmental conditions. Manganese is concentrated at the crests of sand waves and, in areas of gentle slope, grades locally from nodules to solid pavement.

Mr. John Murray, to whom the specimens of bottom deposits collected by the "Blake" were sent for examination, looked over the whole and selected some typical specimens. These have been described in detail, and he has added some general notes on the specimens characteristic, 1. of the Coast between the Gulf of Maine and Cape Hatteras; 2. of thee coast between Cape Hatteras and Lat. 31? 48' N.; 3. of the coasts around the greater and lesser Antilles ; and, finally, of the Gulf of Mexico and Straits of Florida.

Observation of manganese deposits in the Blake Plateau during Atlantis Cruise 266

Since 1954 the Blake Plateau has interested the geophysical group at Woods HOle. Early cruises gathered data on this region incidental to other work. It became apparent that the area was worthy of more intense study. Questions about the bathymetry and underlying structure had been raised. This is a report of the most recent cruise undertaken to study the northern portion of the Plateau. It is intended to summarize the data collected and to be useful as art aid to investigators in preparation of manuscripts for publication.

An evaluation of DEEPSTAR's operational performance at sea is presented in this report through a description of typical dive procedures and the actual NAVOCEANO dive results.

Two-page handwritten letter from Harvard undergraduate William Prescott to his classmate, Oliver Prescott, that chiefly describes, in florid language, the discipline received by John Rowe (Harvard AB 1783) and others from College officers for disorderly behavior.

Student mathematical notebook of William Tudor, 1795

Notebook containing the handwritten mathematical exercises of William Tudor, kept in 1795 while he was an undergraduate at Harvard College. The volume contains rules, definitions, problems, drawings, and tables on geometry, trigonometry, surveying, calculating distances, sailing, and dialing. Some of the exercises are illustrated with hand-drawn diagrams. The Menusration of Heights and Distances section contains color drawings of buildings and trees, and some have been altered with notes in different hands and with humorous additions. For instance, a drawing of a tower was drawn into a figure titled “Egyptian Mummy.” Some of the images are identified: “A rude sketch of the Middlesex canal,” Genl Warren’s monument on Bunker Hill,” “Noddles Island,” “the fields of Elysium,” and the “Roxbury Canal.” The annotations and additional drawings are unattributed.
