Background: Animal studies have suggested that conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a natural component of ruminant meat and dairy products, may confer beneficial effects on health. However, little information on the effects of CLA on immune function is available, especially in humans. Furthermore, the effects of individual isomers of CLA have not been adequately investigated. Objective: This study investigated the effects of supplementing the diet with 3 doses of highly enriched cis-9,trans-11 CLA (0.59, 1.19, and 2.38 g/d) or trans-10,cis-12 CLA (0.63, 1.26, and 2.52 g/d) on immune outcomes in healthy humans. Design: The study had a randomized, double-blind, crossover design. Healthy men consumed 1, 2, and 4 capsules sequentially that contained 80% of either cis-9,trans-11 CLA or trans-10,cis-12 CLA for consecutive 8-wk periods. This regimen was followed by a 6-wk washout and a crossover to the other isomer. Results: Both CLA isomers decreased mitogen-induced T lymphocyte activation in a dose-dependent manner. There was a significant negative correlation between mitogen-induced T lymphocyte activation and the proportions of both cis-9,trans-11 CLA and trans-10,cis-12 CLA in peripheral blood mononuclear cell lipids. However, CLA did not affect lymphocyte subpopulations or serum concentrations of C-reactive protein and did not have any consistent effects on ex vivo cytokine production. Conclusion: CLA supplementation results in a dose-dependent reduction in the mitogen-induced activation of T lymphocytes. The effects of cis-9,trans-l I CLA and trans-10,cis-12 CLA were similar, and there was a negative correlation between mitogen-induced T lymphocyte activation and the cis-9,trans-11 CLA and trans-10,cis-12 CLA contents of mononuclear cells.

Supplementing broiler diets with conventional vegetable oils has little effect on the long-chain n-3 PUFA (LC n-3 PUFA) content of the meat. The present study investigated the effect on fatty acid composition and sensory characteristics of chicken meat when broilers were fed oil extracted from soyabeans (SDASOY) that had been genetically engineered to produce C18 : 4n-3 (stearidonic acid (SDA), 240 mg/g oil). Three diets were fed to 120 birds (eight replicate pens of five birds) from 15 d to slaughter (41–50 d). Diets were identical apart from the oil added to them (45 and 50 g/kg as fed in the grower and finisher phases, respectively), which was either SDASOY, near-isogenic soya (CON) or fish oil (FISH). The LC n-3 PUFA content of the meat increased in the order CON, SDASOY and FISH. In breast meat with skin, the SDA concentration was 522, 13 and 37 (sem 14·4) mg/100 g meat for SDASOY, CON and FISH, respectively. Equivalent values for C20 : 5n-3 (EPA) were 53, 13 and 140 (sem 8·4); for C22 : 5n-3 (docosapentaenoic acid (DPA)) 65, 15 and 101 (sem 3·5); for C22 : 6n-3 (DHA) 19, 9 and 181 (sem 4·4). Leg meat (with skin) values for SDA were 861, 23 and 68 (sem 30·1); for EPA 87, 9 and 258 (sem 7·5); for DPA 95, 20 and 165 (sem 5·0); for DHA 29, 10 and 278 (sem 8·4). Aroma, taste and aftertaste of freshly cooked breast meat were not affected. Fishy aromas, tastes and aftertastes were associated with LC n-3 PUFA content of the meat, being most noticeable in the FISH leg meat (both freshly cooked and reheated) and in the reheated SDASOY leg meat.

The addition of the atropisomeric racemic sulfur compound 4,4′-biphenanthrene-3,3′-dithiol (H2 biphes) to a dichloromethane solution of [{M(μ-OMe)(cod)}2] (M = Rh, Ir, cod = cycloocta-1,5-diene) afforded the dithiolate-bridged complexes [{Rh2(μ-biphes)(cod)2}n] (n = 2 5 or n = 1 6) and [{Ir2(μ-biphes)(cod)2}n]·nCH2Cl27. When 1,1′-binaphthalene-2,2′-dithiol (H2 binas) reacted with [{Ir(μ-OMe)(cod)}2], complex [Ir2(μ-binas)(cod)2] 8 was obtained. Complexes 5 and 6 reacted with carbon monoxide to give the dinuclear tetracarbonyl complex [Rh2(μ-biphes)(CO)4] 9. The reaction of 9 with PR3 provided the mixed-ligand complexes [{Rh2(μ-biphes)(CO)2(PR3)2}2] · xCH2Cl2 (R = Ph, x = 2 10, C6H11, x = 1 11) and [{Rh2(μ-biphes)(CO)3(PR3)}2] · CH2Cl212 (R = OC6H4But-o). The crystal structure of 6 was determined by X-ray diffraction. Reaction of the dithioether ligand Me2biphes with [Rh(cod)2]ClO4 in CH2Cl2 solution afforded the cationic complex [Rh(cod)(Me2biphes)]ClO4 · CH2Cl213. Asymmetric hydroformylation of styrene was performed using the complexes described. The extent of aldehyde conversion ranges from 53 to 100%, with selectivities towards branched aldehydes in the range 51 to 96%. The enantioselectivities were quite low and did not exceed 20%.

Bi(4-x)La(x)Ti(3)O(12) (BLT) ceramics were prepared and studied in this work in terms of La(3+)-modified microstructure and phase development as well as electrical response. According to the results processed from X-ray diffraction and electrical measurements, the solubility limit (XL) of La(3+) into the Bi(4)Ti(3)O(12) (BIT) matrix was here found to locate slightly above x = 1.5. Further, La(3+) had the effect of reducing the material grain size, while changing its morphology from the plate-like form, typical of BIT ceramics, to a spherical-like one. The electrical results presented and discussed here also include the behavior of the temperature of the ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition as well as the normal or diffuse and/or relaxor nature of this transition depending on the La(3+) content. Four new ternary complexes of copper(I) with thiosaccharin and phosphanes were prepared. The reaction of [Cu(4)(tsac)(4)(CH(3)CN)(2)] (1) (tsac: thiosaccharinate anion) with PPh(3) in molar ratios Cu(I)/PPh(3) 1:075 and 1:2 gave the complexes [Cu(4)(tsac)(4)(PPh(3))(3)] center dot CH(3)CN (2) and Cu(tsac)(PPh(3))(2) (3), respectively. The reaction of 1 with Ph(2)PCH(2)PPh(2) (dppm) in molar ratios Cu(I)/dppm 2:1 and 1:1 gave the complexes [Cu(4) (tsac)(4)(dppm)(2)] center dot 2CH(2)Cl(2) (4) and [Cu(2)(tsac)(2)(dppm)(2)] center dot CH(2)Cl(2) (5), respectively. All the compounds have been characterized by spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic methods. Complex 2 presents a tetra-nuclear arrangement with three metal centers in distorted tetrahedral S(2)NP environments, the fourth one with the Cu(I) ion in a distorted trigonal S(2)N coordination sphere, and the tsac anions acting as six electron donor ligands in mu(3)-S(2)N coordination forms. Complex 3 shows mononuclear molecular units with copper(I) in a distorted trigonal planar coordination sphere, built with the exocyclic S atom of a mono-coordinated thiosaccharinate anion and two P-atoms of triphenylphosphane molecules. With dppm as secondary ligand the structures of the complexes depends strongly on the stoicheometry of the preparation reaction. Complex 4 has a centrosymmetric structure. Two triply bridged Cu(2)(tsac)(2)(dppm) units are joined together by the exocyclic S-atoms of two tsac anions acting effectively as bridging tridentate ligands. Complex 5 is conformed by asymmetric dinuclear moieties where the two dppm and one tsac ligands bridge two Cu(I) atoms and the second tsac anion binds one of the metal centers through its exocyclic S-atom.

The exopolysaccharide, Botryosphaeran, produced by the ligninolytic, ascomycetcous fungus Botryosphaeria sp., was isolated from the extracellular fluid by precipitation with ethanol, and purified by gel permeation chromatography to yield a carbohydrate-rich fraction (96%) composed mainly of glucose (98%). Infra-red and C-13 NMR spectroscopy showed that all the glucosidic linkages were in the beta-configuration. Data from methylation analysis and Smith degradation indicated that Botryosphaeran was a (1 --> 3)-beta-(D)-glucan with approx 22% side branching at C-6. The products obtained from partial acid hydrolysis demonstrated that the side branches consisted of single (1 --> 6)-beta-linked glucosyl, and (1 --> 6)-beta-linked gentiobiosyl residues.[GRAPHICS](C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. Botryosphaeran, a new exopolysaccharide from the endophytic fungus Botryosphaeria rhodina MAMB-05, and algal laminarin were hydrolyzed by partially-fractionated enzymes of the beta-glucanolytic complex from Trichoderma harzianum Rifai. beta-Glucanase fractions (F-I and F-II) separated by gel permeation chromatography presented different modes of attack on botryosphaeran and laminarin. Botryosphaeran was hydrolyzed to the extent of 66% (F-I) and 98% (F-II) within 30 min, and its main hydrolysis products were gluco-oligosaccharides of DP >= 4, with lesser amounts of glucose, di- and tri-saccharides. The action of enzyme fractions I and II on laminarin resulted in 15% conversion to glucose, while the percentage of saccharification was radically different (70% for F-I and 25% for F-II). The different product arrays within the polysaccharide hydrolysates can be explained by the difference in the enzymes' specificities within each enzyme fraction, and the molecular structures of the polysaccharides and their complexity.

We consider the supersymmetric extension of the 3-3-1 model with right-handed neutrinos. We study the mass spectra in the scalar and pseudoscalar sectors, and for a given set of the input parameters, we find that the lightest scalar in the model has a mass of 130 GeV and the lightest pseudoscalar has mass of 5 GeV. However, this pseudoscalar decouples from the Z(0) at high energy scales since it is almost a singlet under SU(2)(L)circle timesU(1)(Y).
