P>Estimates of effective elastic thickness (T(e)) for the western portion of the South American Plate using, independently, forward flexural modelling and coherence analysis, suggest different thermomechanical properties for the same continental lithosphere. We present a review of these T(e) estimates and carry out a critical reappraisal using a common methodology of 3-D finite element method to solve a differential equation for the bending of a thin elastic plate. The finite element flexural model incorporates lateral variations of T(e) and the Andes topography as the load. Three T(e) maps for the entire Andes were analysed: Stewart & Watts (1997), Tassara et al. (2007) and Perez-Gussinye et al. (2007). The predicted flexural deformation obtained for each T(e) map was compared with the depth to the base of the foreland basin sequence. Likewise, the gravity effect of flexurally induced crust-mantle deformation was compared with the observed Bouguer gravity. T(e) estimates using forward flexural modelling by Stewart & Watts (1997) better predict the geological and gravity data for most of the Andean system, particularly in the Central Andes, where T(e) ranges from greater than 70 km in the sub-Andes to less than 15 km under the Andes Cordillera. The misfit between the calculated and observed foreland basin subsidence and the gravity anomaly for the Maranon basin in Peru and the Bermejo basin in Argentina, regardless of the assumed T(e) map, may be due to a dynamic topography component associated with the shallow subduction of the Nazca Plate beneath the Andes at these latitudes.

Vector field formulation based on the Poisson theorem allows an automatic determination of rock physical properties (magnetization to density ratio-MDR-and the magnetization inclination-MI) from combined processing of gravity and magnetic geophysical data. The basic assumptions (i.e., Poisson conditions) are: that gravity and magnetic fields share common sources, and that these sources have a uniform magnetization direction and MDR. In addition, the previously existing formulation was restricted to profile data, and assumed sufficiently elongated (2-D) sources. For sources that violate Poisson conditions or have a 3-D geometry, the apparent values of MDR and MI that are generated in this way have an unclear relationship to the actual properties in the subsurface. We present Fortran programs that estimate MDR and MI values for 3-D sources through processing of gridded gravity and magnetic data. Tests with simple geophysical models indicate that magnetization polarity can be successfully recovered by MDR-MI processing, even in cases where juxtaposed bodies cannot be clearly distinguished on the basis of anomaly data. These results may be useful in crustal studies, especially in mapping magnetization polarity from marine-based gravity and magnetic data. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In medical processes where ionizing radiation is used, dose planning and dose delivery are the key elements to patient safety and treatment success, particularly, when the delivered dose in a single session of treatment can be an order of magnitude higher than the regular doses of radiotherapy. Therefore, the radiation dose should be well defined and precisely delivered to the target while minimizing radiation exposure to surrounding normal tissues [1]. Several methods have been proposed to obtain three-dimensional (3-D) dose distribution [2, 3]. In this paper, we propose an alternative method, which can be easily implemented in any stereotactic radiosurgery center with a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) facility. A phantom with or without scattering centers filled with Fricke gel solution is irradiated with Gamma Knife(A (R)) system at a chosen spot. The phantom can be a replica of a human organ such as head, breast or any other organ. It can even be constructed from a real 3-D MR image of an organ of a patient using a computer-aided construction and irradiated at a specific region corresponding to the tumor position determined by MRI. The spin-lattice relaxation time T (1) of different parts of the irradiated phantom is determined by localized spectroscopy. The T (1)-weighted phantom images are used to correlate the image pixels intensity to the absorbed dose and consequently a 3-D dose distribution with a high resolution is obtained.

To investigate the role of β-(1-3)-D-glucan on 99mTc labelled Escherichia coli translocation and cytokines secretion in rats submitted to small bowel ischemia/reperfusion injury. Methods: Five groups (n=10 each) of Wistar rats were subjected to control(C), sham(S), group IR subjected to 45 min of bowel ischemia/60 min of reperfusion(I/R), and group I/R+glucan subjected to 45 min of bowel ischemia/60 min of reperfusion(I/R) and injected with 2mg/Kg intramuscular. Translocation of labelled bacteria to mesenteric lymph nodes, liver, spleen, lung and serum was determined using radioactivity/count and colony forming units/g(CFU/g). Serum TNFα, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10 were measured by ELISA. Results: CFU/g and radioactivity/count were higher in I/R than in I/R+glucan rats. In C, S and S+glucan groups, bacteria and radioactivity/count were rarely detected. The I/R+glucan rats had enhancement of IL-10 and suppressed production of serum TNFα, IL-1β and, IL-6, compared to I/R untreated animals. Conclusion: The β-(1-3)-D-glucan modulated the production of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines during bowel ischemia/reperfusion, and attenuated translocation of labelled bacteria

A set of NIH Image macro programs was developed to make qualitative and quantitative analyses from digital stereo pictures produced by scanning electron microscopes. These tools were designed for image alignment, anaglyph representation, animation, reconstruction of true elevation surfaces, reconstruction of elevation profiles, true-scale elevation mapping and, for the quantitative approach, surface area and roughness calculations. Limitations on time processing, scanning techniques and programming concepts are also discussed.

The presence of porosities at the dentin/adhesive interface has been observed with the use of new generation dentin bonding systems. These porosities tend to contradict the concept that etching and hybridization processes occur equally and simultaneously. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the micromechanical behavior of the hybrid layer (HL) with voids based on a self-etching adhesive system using 3-D finite element (FE) analysis. Three FE models (Mr) were built: Mr, dentin specimen (41x41x82 μm) with a regular and perfect (i.e. pore-free) HL based on a self-etching adhesive system, restored with composite resin; Mp, similar to M, but containing 25% (v/v) voids in the HL; Mpp, similar to Mr, but containing 50% (v/v) voids in the HL. A tensile load (0.03N) was applied on top of the composite resin. The stress field was obtained by using Ansys Workbench 10.0. The nodes of the base of the specimen were constrained in the x, y and z axes. The maximum principal stress (σmax) was obtained for all structures at the dentin/adhesive interface. The Mpp showed the highest peak of σmax in the HL (32.2 MPa), followed by Mp (30 MPa) and Mr (28.4 MPa). The stress concentration in the peritubular dentin was high in all models (120 MPa). All other structures positioned far from voids showed similar increase of stress. Voids incorporated into the HL raised the σmax in this region by 13.5%. This behavior might be responsible for lower bond strengths of self-etching and single-bottle adhesives, as reported in the literature.

Objectives: Based on a maxillary premolar restored with laminate veneer and using the 3-D finite element analysis (FEA) and mCT data, the aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different types of buccal cusp reduction on the stress distribution in the porcelain laminate veneer and in the resin luting cement layer. Methods: Two 3-D FEA models (M) of a maxillary premolar were built from mCT data. The buccal cusp reduction followed two configurations: Mt-buccal cusp completely covered by porcelain laminate veneer; and Mp-buccal cusp partially covered by porcelain laminate veneer. The loading (150 N in 458) was performed on the top of the buccal cusp. The finite element software (Ansys Workbench 10.0) was used to obtain the maximum shear stress (σmax) and maximum principal stress (σmax). Results: The Mp showed reduced the stress (σmax) in porcelain laminate veneer (from-2.3 to 24.5 MPa) in comparison with Mt (from-5.3 to 27.4 MPa). The difference between the peak and lower stress values of σmax in Mp (-6.8 to 26.7 MPa) and Mt (-5.3 to 27.4 MPa) was similar for the resin luting cement layer. The structures not exceeded the ultimate tensile strength or the shear bond strength. Conclusions: Cusp reduction did not affect significant increase in σmax and τmax. The Space Vector PWM implementation and operation for a Four-leg Voltage Source Inverter (VSI) is detailed and discussed in this paper. Although less common, four-leg VSIs are a viable solution for situations where neutral connection is necessary, including Active Power Filter applications. This topology presents advantages regarding the VSI DC link and capacitance, which make it useful for high power devices. Theory, implementation and simulations are also discussed in this paper. © 2011 IEEE.

The aimof this study was to evaluate the stress distribution on bone tissue with a single prosthesis supported by implants of large and conventional diameter and presenting different veneering materials using the 3-D finite elementmethod. Sixteenmodels were fabricated to reproduce a bone block with implants, using two diameters (3.75 × 10 mmand 5.00 × 10 mm), four different veneering materials (composite resin, acrylic resin, porcelain, and NiCr crown), and two loads (axial (200 N) and oblique (100 N)). For data analysis, the maximum principal stress and vonMises criterion were used. For the axial load, the cortical bone in allmodels did not exhibit significant differences, and the trabecular bone presented higher tensile stresswith reduced implant diameter. For the oblique load, the cortical bone presented a significant increase in tensile stress on the same side as the loading for smaller implant diameters. The trabecular bone showed a similar but more discreet trend. There was no difference in bone tissue with different veneering materials. The veneering material did not influence the stress distribution in the supporting tissues of single implant-supported prostheses. The large-diameter implants improved the transference of occlusal loads to bone tissue and decreased stress mainly under oblique loads.Oblique loading was more detrimental to distribution stresses than axial loading. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. O método de empilhamento sísmico CRS simula seções sísmicas ZO a partir de dados de cobertura múltipla, independente do macro-modelo de velocidades. Para meios 2-D, a função tempo de trânsito de empilhamento depende de três parâmetros, a saber: do ângulo de emergência do raio de reflexão normal (em relação à normal da superfície) e das curvaturas das frentes de onda relacionadas às ondas hipotéticas, denominadas NIP e Normal. O empilhamento CRS consiste na soma das amplitudes dos traços sísmicos em dados de múltipla cobertura, ao longo da superfície definida pela função tempo de trânsito do empilhamento CRS, que melhor se ajusta aos dados. O resultado do empilhamento CRS é assinalado a pontos de uma malha pré-definida na seção ZO. Como resultado tem-se a simulação de uma seção sísmica ZO. Isto significa que para cada ponto da seção ZO deve-se estimar o trio de parâmetros ótimos que produz a máxima coerência entre os eventos de reflexão sísmica. Nesta Tese apresenta-se fórmulas para o método CRS 2-D e para a velocidade NMO, que consideram a topografia da superfície de medição. O algoritmo é baseado na estratégia de otimização dos parâmetros de fórmula CRS através de um processo em três etapas: 1) Busca dos parâmetros, o ângulo de emergência e a curvatura da onda NIP, aplicando uma otimização global, 2) busca de um parâmetro, a curvatura da onda N, aplicando uma otimização global, e 3) busca de três parâmetros aplicando uma otimização local para refinar os parâmetros estimados nas etapas anteriores. Na primeira e segunda etapas é usado o algoritmo Simulated Annealing (SA) e na terceira etapa é usado o algoritmo Variable Metric (VM). Para o caso de uma superfície de medição com variações topográficas suaves, foi considerada a curvatura desta superfície no algoritmo do método de empilhamento CRS 2-D, com aplicação a dados sintéticos. O resultado foi uma seção ZO simulada, de alta qualidade ao ser comparada com a seção ZO obtida por modelamento direto, com uma alta razão sinal-ruído, além da estimativa do trio de parâmetros da função tempo de trânsito. Foi realizada uma nálise de sensibilidade para a nova função de tempo de trânsito CRS em relação à curvatura da superfície de medição. Os resultados demonstraram que a função tempo de trânsito CRS é mais sensível nos pontos-médios afastados do ponto central e para grandes afastamentos. As expressões da velocidade NMO apresentadas foram aplicadas para estimar as velocidades e as profundidades dos refletores para um modelo 2-D com topografia suave. Para a inversão destas velocidades e profundidades dos refletores, foi considerado o algoritmo de inversão tipo Dix. A velocidade NMO para uma superfície de medição curva, permite estimar muito melhor estas velocidades e profundidades dos refletores, que as velocidades NMO referidas as superfícies planas. Também apresenta-se uma abordagem do empilhamento CRS no caso 3-D. neste caso a função tempo de trânsito depende de oito parâmetros. São abordadas cinco estratégias de busca destes parâmetros. A combinação de duas destas estratégias (estratégias das três aproximações dos tempos de trânsito e a estratégia das configurações e curvaturas arbitrárias) foi aplicada exitosamente no empilhamento CRS 3-D de dados sintéticos e reais.
