This paper describes the main characteristics and advantages of convective heating system for refractory lining, compared with conventional heating systems. In addition the main results obtained are presented with its implementation in CSN Blast Furnace #2 and 3 Runners, in terms of cost and equipment availability, as well as the need for ceramic coating to protect the lining against oxidation, arising from excessive air combustion. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Background and Purpose: The evidence of the benefits from regular physical activity to hypertensives is based on dry land training studies. Therefore, the aim of this study is to compare the effect of aquatic exercise with dry land training on hypertensive women. Methods: This is a randomized controlled study with 52 post-menopausal hypertensive women. The patients were randomly allocated in three groups: water aerobic training group (n=19), dry land aerobic training group (n=19) and a non-intervention control group (n=14). The training protocol was performed by 12weeks. Results: There were no differences among the three groups concerning basal blood pressure (BP) and biochemical variables. In water group, there was a statistically significant reduction of systolic BP from 136±16mmHg at zero week to 124±18mm Hg at 11th week and 124±15mmHg at 12th week. In dry land training group, there was a statistically significant reduction of systolic BP from 138±15mmHg at zero week to 125±10mmHg at 7th week, 127±10mmHg at 10th week and 126±9mmHg at 12th week. The control group presented no change in any of the assessed variables. No changes were carried out in any antihypertensive medications during study. Discussion: This is a randomized controlled study that demonstrates the antihypertensive efficacy of aerobic aquatic exercise. © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The study is aimed to evaluate the efficiency of ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) as a simple strategy focused on sample preparation for metal determination in biological samples. The extraction of sodium and potassium extraction was carried out from swine feed followed by determination of the concentration of these metals by flame atomic emission spectrometry (FAES). The experiment was performed to cover the study of the variables influencing the extraction process and its optimal conditions (sample mass, particle size, acid concentration, sonication time and ultrasound power); the determination of these analytical characteristics and method validation using certified reference material; and the analysis of pre-starter diets. The optimal conditions established conditions were as follows: mass: 100 mg, particle size:<60 μm, acid concentration: 0.10 mol L-1 HCl, sonication time: 50 s and ultrasound power: 102 W. The proposed method (UAE) was applied in digestibility assays of those nutrients present in different piglet pre-starter feeds and their results proved to be compatible with those obtained from mineralized samples (P < 0.05). The ultrasound extraction method was demonstrated to be an excellent alternative for handless sampling and operational costs and the method also has the advantage of does not generating toxic residues that may negatively affect human health and contaminate the environment. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. To appraise the oral health knowledge of parents and children from the quilombola communities located in the Ribeira Valley, Sao Paulo. Methods Preventive and educational activities in oral health were developed with children in the communities (Andre Lopes, Ivaporunduva, Pedro Cubas and Sapatu) including lectures, guidance on tooth brushing techniques, supervised mass brushing, detection of tooth biofilm and topical application of fluoride. Parents also participated in the activities. They were evaluated on the oral health of their children by means of a standard questionnaire. The water supply of the communities was also analyzed. Results The children participated enthusiastically and responsively in the preventive and educational activities. As to the questionnaires, 56% of parents stated that their children’s oral health was poor and 47.2% of them usually follow up on their children’s oral hygiene until they are approximately six years old, but this follow-up is not frequent. Conclusion We conclude that quilombola parents and children have very little knowledge about oral health. Therefore increased attention to oral health is required in these communities by means of frequent oral health education and promotion.

The time to reach the maximum response of arterial pressure, heart rate and vascular resistance (hindquarter and mesenteric) was measured in conscious male spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) and normotensive control rats (NCR; Wistar; 18-22 weeks) subjected to electrical stimulation of the aortic depressor nerve (ADN) under thiopental anesthesia. The parameters of stimulation were 1 mA intensity and 2 ms pulse length applied for 5 s, using frequencies of 10, 30, and 90 Hz. The time to reach the hemodynamic responses at different frequencies of ADN stimulation was similar for SHR (N = 15) and NCR (N = 14); hypotension = NCR (4194 +/- 336 to 3695 +/- 463 ms) vs SHR ( 3475 +/- 354 to 4494 +/- 300 ms); bradycardia = NCR (1618 +/- 152 to 1358 +/- 185 ms) vs SHR (1911 +/- 323 to 1852 +/- 431 ms), and the fall in hindquarter vascular resistance = NCR (6054 +/- 486 to 6550 +/- 847 ms) vs SHR (4849 +/- 918 to 4926 +/- 646 ms); mesenteric = NCR (5574 +/- 790 to 5752 +/- 539 ms) vs SHR (5638 +/- 648 to 6777 +/- 624 ms). In addition, ADN stimulation produced baroreflex responses characterized by a faster cardiac effect followed by a vascular effect, which together contributed to the decrease in arterial pressure. Therefore, the results indicate that there is no alteration in the conduction of the electrical impulse after the site of baroreceptor mechanical transduction in the baroreflex pathway (central and/or efferent) in conscious SHR compared to NCR.

The pathogenic mechanisms of thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO) are not entirely known and the imbalance of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) plays a role in vascular diseases. We evaluated the MMP-2 and MMP-9 circulating levels and their endogenous tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMP-1 and TIMP-2) in TAO patients with clinical manifestations. The study included 20 TAO patients (n = 10 female, n = 10 male) aged 38-59 years under clinical follow-up. The patients were classified into two groups: (1) TAO former smokers (n = 11) and (2) TAO active smokers (n = 9); the control group included normal volunteer non-smokers (n = 10) and active smokers without peripheral artery disease (n = 10). Patient plasma samples were used to analyze MMP-2 and MMP-9 levels using zymography, and TIMP-1 and TIMP-2 concentrations were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. The analysis of MMP-2/TIMP-2 and MMP-9/TIMP-1 ratios (which were used as indices of net MMP-2 and MMP-9 activity, respectively) showed significantly higher MMP-9/TIMP-1 ratios in TAO patients (p < 0.05). We found no significant differences in MMP-2/TIMP-2 ratios (p > 0.05). We found higher MMP-9 levels and decreased levels of TIMP-1 in the TAO groups (active smokers and former smokers), especially in active smokers compared with the other groups (all p < 0.05). MMP-2 and TIMP-2 were not significantly different in patients with TAO as compared to the control group (p > 0.05). In conclusion, our results showed increased MMP-9 and reduced TIMP-1 activity in TAO patients, especially in active smokers compared with non-TAO patients. These data suggest that smoke compounds could activate MMP-9 production or inhibit TIMP-1 activity.

Preformed structural reinforcements have shown good performance in crash tests, where the great advantage is their weight. These reinforcements are designed with the aim of increasing the rigidity of regions with large deformations, thus stabilising sections of the vehicle that work as load path during impact. The objective of this work is to show the application of structural reinforcements made of polymeric material PA66 in the field of vehicle safety, through finite element simulations. Simulations of frontal impact at 50 km/h and in ODB (offset deformable barrier) at 57 km/h configurations (standards such as ECE R-94 and ECE R-12) were performed in the software LS-DYNA R (R) and MADYMO (R). The simulations showed that the use of polymeric reinforcements leads to a 70% reduction in A-pillar intrusion, a 65% reduction in the displacement of the steering column and a 59% reduction in the deformation in the region of the occupant legs and feet. The level of occupant injuries was analysed by MADYMO (R) software, and a reduction of 23.5% in the chest compression and 80% in the tibia compression were verified. According to the standard, such conditions lead to an improvement in the occupant safety in a vehicle collision event.

Statistical modelling and statistical learning theory are two powerful analytical frameworks for analyzing signals and developing efficient processing and classification algorithms. In this thesis, these frameworks are applied for modelling and processing biomedical signals in two different contexts: ultrasound medical imaging systems and primate neural activity analysis and modelling. In the context of ultrasound medical imaging, two main applications are explored: deconvolution of signals measured from a ultrasonic transducer and automatic image segmentation and classification of prostate ultrasound scans. In the former application a stochastic model of the radio frequency signal measured from a ultrasonic transducer is derived. This model is then employed for developing in a statistical framework a regularized deconvolution procedure, for enhancing signal resolution. In the latter application, different statistical models are used to characterize images of prostate tissues, extracting different features. These features are then uses to segment the images in region of interests by means of an automatic procedure based on a statistical model of the extracted features. Finally, machine learning techniques are used for automatic classification of the different region of interests. In the context of neural activity signals, an example of bio-inspired dynamical network was developed to help in studies of motor-related processes in the brain of primate monkeys. The presented model aims to mimic the abstract functionality of a cell population in 7a parietal region of primate monkeys, during the execution of learned behavioural tasks.
