We analyze the integrability properties of models defined on the symmetric space SU(2)/U(1) in 3 + 1 dimensions, using a recently proposed approach for integrable theories in any dimension. We point out the key ingredients for a theory to possess an infinite number of local conservation laws, and discuss classes of models with such property, We propose a 3 + 1-dimensional, relativistic invariant field theory possessing a toroidal soliton solution carrying a unit of topological charge given by the Hopf map. Construction of the action is guided by the requirement that the energy of static configuration should be scale invariant. The solution is constructed exactly. The model possesses an infinite number of local conserved currents. The method is also applied to the Skyrme-Faddeev model, and integrable submodels are proposed. (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. B.V. Objectives. To compare the frequency of another primary malignancy in patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) who received radioiodine therapy or not ((131)I). Material and Methods. 168 cases of DTC patients were retrospectively evaluated as to the frequency of another neoplasia by comparing patients with and without it, taking into account clinical, laboratory, and therapeutic parameters. Results. Another primary malignancy occurred in 8.9% of patients. Of these, 53.3% showed the malignancy before (131)I and 46.7% after it. By comparing both groups, the age at the moment of diagnosis of another neoplasia was 46.1 ± 20.2 years for the group before (131)I therapy and of 69.4 ± 11.4 years for the group after it (P = 0.02). Of the 148 patients treated with (131)I, 4.7% developed another malignancy. The latter were older (61 ± 17 years) than those who did not show another cancer type (44.1 ± 14.2 years) (P < 0.05). Conclusion. The frequency of another neoplasia found after (131)I was similar to that found before (131)I.

Mirabegron is the first β3-adrenoceptor (AR) agonist approved for treatment of overactive bladder syndrome (OAB). This study aimed to investigate the effects of β3-adrenoceptor (AR) agonist mirabegron in mouse urethra. The possibility that mirabegron exerts α1-AR antagonism was also tested in rat smooth muscle preparations presenting α1A- (vas deferens and prostate), α1D- (aorta) and α1B-AR (spleen). Functional assays were carried out in mouse and rat isolated tissues. Competition assays for the specific binding of [(3) H]Prazosin to membrane preparations of HEK 293 cells expressing each of the human α1-ARs, as well as β-AR mRNA expression and cyclic AMP measurements in mouse urethra were performed. Mirabegron produced concentration-dependent urethral relaxations that were right shifted by the selective β3-AR antagonist L 748,337, but unaffected by β1- and β2-AR antagonists (atenolol and ICI 118,551, respectively). Mirabegron-induced relaxations were enhanced by the phosphodiesterase-4 inhibitor rolipram, and this agonist stimulated cAMP synthesis. Mirabegron also produced rightward shifts in urethral contractions induced by the α1-AR agonist phenylephrine. Schild regression analysis revealed that mirabegron behaves as a competitive antagonist of α1-AR in urethra, vas deferens and prostate (α1A-AR, pA2 ≅ 5.6) and aorta (α1D-AR, pA2 ≅ 5.4), but not in spleen (α1B-AR). The affinities estimated for mirabegron in functional assays were consistent with those estimated in radioligand binding with human recombinant α1A- and α1D-ARs (pKi ≅ 6.0). The effects of mirabegron in urethral smooth muscle are the result of β3-AR agonism together with α1A / α1D-AR antagonism.

Members of the subfamily Alphaherpesvirinae use the epithelium of the upper respiratory and/or genital tract as preferential sites for primary replication. However, bovine herpesvirus 5 (BoHV5) is neurotropic and neuroinvasive and responsible for meningoencephalitis in cattle and in animal models. A related virus, BoHV1 has also been occasionally implicated in natural cases of neurological infection and disease in cattle. The aim of the present study was to assess the in vitro effects of BoHV1 and BoHV5 replication in neuron-like cells. Overall, cytopathic effects, consisting of floating rounded cells, giant cells and monolayer lysis, induced by both viruses at 48 h postinfection (p.i.) resulted in a loss of cell viability and high virus titres (r = 0.978). The BoHV1 Cooper strain produced the lowest titres in neuron-like cells, although viral DNA was detected in infected cells during all experiments. Virus replication in infected cells was demonstrated by immunocytochemistry, flow cytometry and qPCR assays. BoHV antigens were better visualized at 48 h p.i. and flow cytometry analysis showed that SV56/90 and Los Angeles antigens were present at higher levels. In spite of the fact that BoHV titres dropped at 48 h p.i, viral DNA remained detectable until 120 h p.i. Sensitive TUNEL (terminal deoxynucleotidyltransferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labeling) and annexin V assays were used to identify apoptosis. BoHV5 induced death in approximately 50 % of cells within 24 h p.i., similar to what has been observed for BoHV1 Los Angeles. Infection with the BoHV1 Cooper strain resulted in 26.37 % of cells being in the early stages of apoptosis; 63.69 % of infected cells were considered viable. Modulation of mitochondrial function, as measured by mitochondrial membrane depolarization, was synchronous with the virus replication cycle, cell viability and virus titres at 48 h p.i. Our results indicate that apoptosis plays an important role in preventing neuronal death and provides a bovine-derived in vitro system to study herpesvirus-neuron interactions.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant multisystem disorder affecting approximately 1 in 3500 individuals. Patients with the disorder can develop carcinoid tumors, medullary thyroid carcinoma, pheochromocytoma and tumor of the hypothalamus. The association of NF1 with Primary Hyperparathyroidism (HPP) is very rare. We report a 56-year-old woman with NF1 who was referred to our service because of nephrolithiasis. Physical examination revealed the characteristic signs of NF1, and her laboratory calcium profile was compatible with HPP. The patient was referred for parathyroidectomy, but during the surgical work-up she underwent spontaneous remission of her HPP. This case is significant not only for the rarity of this presentation in NF1 patients, but also because of the spontaneous remission of HPP.

Transmissible venereal tumor (TVT) is a neoplasia that develops naturally in dogs. It can be easily transplanted, which demonstrates its ability to spread from animal to animal. Since the Linr-1/c-MYC rearrangement in TVT cells had not been studied at the Veterinary Hospital of the Veterinary School, Unesp in Botucatu, SP, this study aimed to detect this genetic alteration specific to this kind of tumor by means of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Twenty dogs with cytological diagnosis of TVT were used. Samples of neoplastic cells were collected to determine the presence of the Line-1/c-MYC marker. The rearrangement characterized by 340bp amplicons did not vary, in agreement with previous studies using the same methodology. This contributed to a more precise identification of persistent tumor cells in cases in which gross or microscopical detection was not possible.

This work aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of fluxofenim used for seed treatment as safener in wheat, Ônix cultivar, treated with the herbicide S-metolachlor applied in pre-emergence. The study was divided in two steps. The first step consisted of an evaluation of fluxofenim’s safener potential for the reduction of visual symptoms of S-metolachlor injury in the field, and the treatments were S-metolachlor at 1,440 and 2,880 mL i.a. ha-1 and fluxofenim at 0, and 40 mL per 100 kg of seeds, and a control without herbicide. The second step was to evaluate glutathione S-transferase activity (GST). Herbicide phytotoxity was measured by way of visual symptoms at 3, 7, 15, and 30 days after emergence (DAE), dry matter from roots and leaves at 10 DAE. For the determination of GST activity, the canopy of plants was collected at 10 DAE and 15 days after treatment application. The wheat presented low tolerance to S-metolachlor at both rates, and fluxofenim increased S-metolachlor selectivity to wheat but not sufficiently, reducing plant population to a nonacceptable level. Gluthationa S-transferase activity for wheat increased when seeds treated with fluxofenim were submitted to S-metolachlor at 1,440 mL a.i. ha-1.
