(1) C13H13N3O5, Mr = 291.26, P (1) over bar, a = 7.4629(9), b = 7.9203(9), c = 12.126(2) angstrom, alpha = 86.804(5), beta = 78.471(7), gamma = 69.401(8)degrees, V = 657.3(2)angstrom(3), Z = 2, R-1 = 0.0454; (2) C11H12N2O4, Mr=236.23, Pbca, a=7.2713(9), b=14.234(1), c=20.848(3)angstrom, V= 2157.8(4) angstrom(3), Z=8, R-1=0.0504; (3) C13H13N2O3Cl, Mr = 280.70, P2/n, a = 17.344(2), b = 9.237(1), c = 18.398(2) angstrom; beta = 92.61(2)degrees, V = 2944.4(6) angstrom(3), Z = 8, R-1 = 0.0714. The conformational features of three 4-substituted-3-4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones were investigated by computational and single crystal X-ray crystallographic studies. The geometries were optimized using semiempirical (AM1) and first principle calculations (B3LYP/6-31G**) methods, the rotational barriers for important functional groups were studied. In all structures the pyrimidinone rings are in a more or less distorted boat conformation. The phenyl and the furane rings are almost perpendicular to the best least-squares plane through the dihydropyrimidinone ring.

Complexes of the type [PdX(PPh3)(1)]X [1 = 4-phenyl-3- thiosemicarbazide; X = Cl- (2), Br- (3), I- (4), and SCN- (5)] have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses and IR, UV/Vis, and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The molecular structure of complex 4 was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The binding of the complexes with a purine base (guanosine) was investigated by 1H NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry, which showed the complexes to coordinate to guanosine through N7. A gel electrophoresis assay demonstrated the ability of 2-5 to cleave DNA plasmid. All the complexes were tested in vitro by means of the MTT assay for their cytotoxicity against two murine cell lines, LM3 (mammary adenocarcinoma) and LP07 (lung adenocarcinoma), and compared with cisplatin. Complexes 2-5 exhibited good cytotoxicity that surpasses that of cisplatin in the case of LM3. A series of thiosemicarbazide/phosphane palladium(II) complexes have been synthesized and fully characterized. These complexes are able to cleave DNA plasmid and show cytotoxicity against adenocarcinoma (mammary LM3 and lung LP07), surpassing the cytotoxicity of cisplatin in the case of LM3. Different synthetic routes have been used for the preparation of a new tetranuclear [Fe4O2(O2CCMe3)(8)(bpm)] cluster (1) and a one-dimensional coordination polymer [Fe4O2-(O2CCMe3)(8)(hmta)](n) (2) (bpm = 2,2'-bipyrimidine and hmta = hexamethylenetetramine). For cluster 1, two structural isomers, 1a and 1b center dot 3MeCN, have been found. X-ray crystallographic analysis showed that all complexes consist of a central {Fe-4(mu(3)-O)(2)}(8+) core. In 1a, metal ions in the core are additionally linked by six bridging pivalates as two other pivalates and a bpm ligand are chelated to Fe-III ions, whereas in cluster 1b, metal ions in the {Fe-4(mu(3)-O)(2)}(8+) core are linked by seven bridging pivalates and only one carboxylate as well as bpm are chelated to the iron centers. In coordination polymer 2, [Fe4O2(O2CCMe3)(8)] clusters are bridged by hmta ligands to form zigzag chains. Magnetic measurements have been carried out to characterize these complexes and revealed antiferromagnetic interactions between Fe-III ions with best-fit parameters of J(wb) = -72.2 (1a) and -88.7 cm(-1) (1b) for wing...body interactions.

The anionic cluster Pt-19(CO)(22)](4-) (1), of pentagonal symmetry, reacts with CO and AuPPh3+ fragments. Upon increasing the Au:Pt-19, molar ratio, different species are sequentially formed, but only the last two members of the series could be characterized by X-ray diffraction, namely, Pt-19(CO)(24)(mu(4)-AuPPh3)(3)](-) (2) and Pt-19(CO)(24){mu(4)-Au-2(PPh3)(2)}(2)] (3).The metallic framework of the starting cluster is completely modified after the addition of CO and AuL+, and both products display the same platinum core of trigonal symmetry, with closely packed metal atoms. The three AuL+ units cap three different square faces in 2, whereas four AuL+ fragments are grouped in two independent bimetallic units in the neutral cluster 3. Electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical studies on 2 showed that its redox ability is comparable with that of the homometallic 1.

The reactions of 4,4′-bipyridine with selected trinuclear triangular copper(II) complexes, [Cu3(μ3-OH)(μ-pz)3(RCOO)2Lx], [pz = pyrazolate anion, R = CH3(CH2)n (2 ≤ n ≤ 5); L = H2O, MeOH, EtOH] yielded a series of 1D coordination polymers (CPs) based on the repetition of [Cu3(μ3-OH)(μ-pz)3] secondary building units joined by bipyridine. The CPs were characterized by conventional analytical methods (elemental analyses, ESI-MS, IR spectra) and single crystal XRD determinations. An unprecedented 1D CP, generated through the bipyridine bridging hexanuclear copper clusters moieties, two 1D CPs presenting structural analogies, and two monodimensional tapes having almost exactly superimposable structures, were obtained. In one case, the crystal packing makes evident the presence of small, not-connected pores, accounting for ca. 6% of free cell volume.

The design of upconversion phosphors with higher quantum yield requires a deeper understanding of the detailed energy transfer and upconversion processes between active ions inside the material. Rate equations can model those processes by describing the populations of the energy levels of the ions as a function of time. However, this model presents some drawbacks: energy migration is assumed to be infinitely fast, it does not determine the detailed interaction mechanism (multipolar or exchange), and it only provides the macroscopic averaged parameters of interaction. Hence, a rate equation model with the same parameters cannot correctly predict the time evolution of upconverted emission and power dependence under a wide range of concentrations of active ions. We present a model that combines information about the host material lattice, the concentration of active ions, and a microscopic rate equation system. The extent of energy migration is correctly taken into account because the energy transfer processes are described on the level of the individual ions. This model predicts the decay curves, concentration, and excitation power dependences of the emission. This detailed information can be used to predict the optimal concentration that results in the maximum upconverted emission.

The electronic properties and the low environmental impact of Cu 3 BiS 3 make this compound a promising material for low-cost thin film solar cell technology. From the first principles, the electronic properties of the isoelectronic substitution of S by O in Cu 3 BiS 3 have been obtained using two different exchange-correlation potentials. This compound has an acceptor level below the conduction band, which modifies the opto-electronic properties with respect to the host semiconductor. In order to analyze a possible efficiency increment with respect to the host semiconductor, we have calculated the maximum efficiency of this photovoltaic absorber material.
