Studies on reactivation of regressing bonnet monkey corpus luteum on day 1 of menses: A pilot study

Studies on functional characteristics of the regressing primate corpus luteum (CL) to luteotrophic stimulus on day 1 of the non-fertile menstrual cycle are scarce. Recombinant human luteinizing hormone (rhLH) (20 IU/Kg BW; n = 10) or human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) (180 IU; n = 6) were administered intravenously to female bonnet monkeys on day 1 of menses. Exogenous treatment of rhLH or hCG caused a significant increase in circulating progesterone (P4) levels 2-4 hours post treatment (P < 0.05). Lutectomy prior to onset of menses confirmed that CL is the site of the increased P4 concentrations. Increased levels of phosphorylated P44/42 MAPK, MKK3/6 activation and concomitant histological changes were observed within 4 hours in CL of monkeys receiving hCG treatment. The results from this study demonstrate the acute progesterone synthesizing capacity of regressing monkey CL after LH or hCG challenge. This has potential implications for interpreting the steroidogenic response after gonadotropin stimulation tests in the early follicular phase of the normal ovulatory and anovulatory women undergoing controlled ovarian stimulation protocols as part of assisted reproductive technology (ART) and in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Ring opening of activated cyclopropanes with NIS/NaN3: synthesis of C-1 linked pseudodisaccharides

NIS/NaN3 mediated ring opening of various donor-acceptor cyclopropanes has been investigated. The study shows the necessity of the donor oxygen lone pair in such ring opening reactions. This methodology has been utilized in the synthesis of C-1 linked pseudodisaccharides through the use of click chemistry. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Exclusive ring opening of gem-dihalo-1,2-cyclopropanated oxyglycal to oxepines in AgOAc

Treatment of gem-dihalo-1,2-cyclopropanated D-oxyglycal with primary, secondary, and unsaturated alcohols, in the presence of AgOAc, leads to the formation of chloro-oxepines exclusively. Reaction of the resulting 2-chloro-oxepines with excess alcohol in the presence of AgOAc, do not promote further reactions. This result is in contrast to the reactions of D-glucal derived halo-oxepine with alcohols known previously that lead to the formation of furanoses as the major product under similar reaction conditions. Observation of this study consolidates the reactivity differences of gem-dihalo-1,2-cyclopropanated oxyglycals, as compared to gem-dihalo- 1,2-cyclopropanated glycals. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Novel synthesis of carbohydrate fused alpha-amino gamma-lactams and glycopeptides by NIS mediated ring opening of donor-acceptor substituted cyclopropanes

alpha-Amino gamma-lactams have been synthesized from carbohydrate derived cyclopropanecarboxylates using N-iodosuccinimide (NIS) and NaN3. Cyclopropane ring opening with NIS and NaN3 in different solvents has been studied. Reductive cyclization of the intermediate di-azides leads to the carbohydrate fused alpha-amino gamma-lactam and gamma-lactams. Additionally, the methodology has been successfully extended to the synthesis of a glycopeptide. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Tetrathiomolybdate-Mediated Ring Opening of Isatoic Anhydrides: An Entry to S-Alkyl or S-Aryl 2-Aminobenzenecarbothioate Derivatives

Decarboxylative thioesterification of isatoic anhydrides mediated by benzyl(triethyl)ammonium tetrathiomolybdate gave the corresponding S-alkyl or S-aryl 2-aminobenzenecarbothioate derivatives at 60 degrees C. At ambient temperature, organic disulfides were reductive cleaved in the presence of tetrathiomolybdate to generate thiolate anions in situ; this was followed by attack on isatoic anhydrides to give the corresponding S-alkyl or S-aryl 2-aminobenzenecarbothioate derivatives. Additionally, it was shown that multistep reactions could be performed with tetrathiomolybdate, starting with an alkyl halide as a precursor of an alkyl disulfide, which, in turn, was used for ring opening of isatoic anhydrides.

One-pot synthesis of functionalized beta-amino sulfides/beta-amino selenides via ring opening of cyclic sulfamidates

A number of functionalized beta-amino and gamma-amino sulfides and selenides have been synthesized involving a one-pot process of ring opening of cyclic sulfamidates with `in situ' generated thiolate and selenoate species from diaryl disulfides and diphenyl diselenide using rongalite. A mild and efficient method has been developed for the synthesis of cysteines from serine.

A Mild Protocol for the Regioselective Ring Opening of Doubly Activated Cyclopropanes by Using Selenolates Generated in Situ: Synthesis of Functionalized Organoselenium Compounds

A variety of functionalized organoselenium compounds were synthesized from doubly activated cyclopropanes and diselenides in the presence of sodium borohydride. A range of substituents were stable under these reaction conditions. Additionally, we extended the scope of the method by reducing nitro groups in the products to give the corresponding selenium-containing unnatural amino acids.

Tandem aziridine ring opening-disulfide formation-reduction-Michael addition in one-pot mediated by tetrathiomolybdate

A detailed study of tetrathiomolybdate mediated tandem regio- and stereoselective ring opening of aziridine, disulfide formation, reduction of disulfide bond and Michael reaction in a one-pot operation is reported. This constitutes four reactions that take place in one-pot operation. In the reaction of BnEt3N](4)MoS4 with an aziridine derived from cyclohexene and in the absence of Michael acceptor intermediates sulfonamidodisulfide and sulfonamidothiol were isolated and fully characterized. It has also been shown that it is possible to carry out selective opening of the aziridine ring in the presence of an epoxide. By incorporating a suitable Michael acceptor as part of the substrate, intramolecular 1,4-addition could be performed, to achieve the synthesis of sulfur containing acyclic, cyclic amino acid ester derivatives and thia-bicyclo3.3.1]nonane derivatives in good yields. Gold catalyzed intramolecular hydroalkoxylation assisted ring opening of furans to the corresponding saturated gamma-keto esters

A facile ring opening of furans in furyl propargyl alcohols to the corresponding saturated gamma-keto esters is observed in the gold(III) chloride catalyzed reaction with MeOH. It is found that the ring opening of furan is driven by the intramolecular hydroalkoxylation. Mitigating the intramolecular hydroalkoxylation led to the expected conjugated enyne resulting from the dehydration. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A porous bulk metallic glass with unidirectional opening pores

Porous Zr-based bulk metallic glass (PMG) with unidirectional opening pores is prepared by electrochemical etching of tungsten wires of the W/bulk metallic glass (BMG) composites. The porosity and pore size can be controlled by adjusting the tungsten wires. The PMG showed no measurable loss in thermal stability as compared to the monolithic Zr-based BMG by water quenching and is more ductile and softer than the pore-free counterpart. The specific surface area of the PMGs is calculated to be 0.65, 3.96, and 10.54 m(2)/kg for 20, 60, and 80 vol % porosity, respectively. (c) 2007 The Electrochemical Society.

La reflexión sobre la temporalidad en la teología de Henri de Lubac

Si bien la preocupación por la temporalidad no asume en Henri de Lubac un desarrollo sistemático, sin embargo es posible encontrarla como una temática subyacente y transversal en muchos de sus textos, relacionada estrechamente con la reflexión sobre el valor y el sentido de la historia. El autor propone indagar sobre el valor de lo temporal en la confrontación con las doctrinas del budismo, del humanismo ateo y de Joaquín de Fiore. El misterio del sobrenatural es la cuestión teológica elegida para exponer la respuesta y posición del teólogo francés en relación a la temporalidad. Finalmente la apertura de perspectivas críticas permitirá prolongar su pensamiento en preocupaciones actuales.

Birkenhead Sixth Form College implemented a virtual network to open up remote access to the college network for its students, staff and governors. In particular, for childcare students on work placements, this has meant 24/7 secure access to their work and resources, and the ability to make timely updates to their work evidence logs. The impact is better continuity of learning and a dramatic increase in the hand-in rate for work. For the staff, governors and college as a whole, the benefits of anytime-access to the network are more than were envisaged at the outset; not only is it saving them valuable time and eliminating the need for large print runs, it is expected to bring cost-savings to the College in the long term.
