Transgenic mice expressing the sequences coding for the envelope proteins of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) in the liver have been used as a model of the HBV chronic carrier state. We evaluated the possibility of inducing a specific immune response to the viral envelope antigens and thus potentially controlling chronic HBV infection. Using HBV-specific DNA-mediated immunization in this transgenic model, we show that the immune response induced after a single intramuscular injection of DNA resulted in the complete clearance of circulating hepatitis B surface antigen and in the long-term control of transgene expression in hepatocytes. This response does not involve a detectable cytopathic effect in the liver. Adoptive transfer of fractionated primed spleen cells from DNA-immunized mice shows that T cells are responsible for the down-regulation of HBV mRNA in the liver of transgenic mice. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a potential immunotherapeutic application of DNA-mediated immunization against an infectious disease and raises the possibility of designing more effective ways of treating HBV chronic carriers.

We perform numerical simulations, including parallel tempering, a four-state Potts glass model with binary random quenched couplings using the JANUS application-oriented computer. We find and characterize a glassy transition, estimating the critical temperature and the value of the critical exponents. Nevertheless, the extrapolation to infinite volume is hampered by strong scaling corrections. We show that there is no ferromagnetic transition in a large temperature range around the glassy critical temperature. We also compare our results with those obtained recently on the “random permutation” Potts glass.

We investigate the critical properties of the four-state commutative random permutation glassy Potts model in three and four dimensions by means of Monte Carlo simulations and a finite-size scaling analysis. By using a field programmable gate array, we have been able to thermalize a large number of samples of systems with large volume. This has allowed us to observe a spin-glass ordered phase in d=4 and to study the critical properties of the transition. In d=3, our results are consistent with the presence of a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, but also with different scenarios: transient effects due to a value of the lower critical dimension slightly below 3 could be very important.

This study analyzes the Turkish case as a model country for the state-building processes in the Arab world in the aftermath of the Arab revolts that took place in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya. To this end, it deals with the Turkish case in three phases: the founding of the Turkish Republic, political developments until 2002, and the post-2002 Justice and Development Party period. The study focuses on state-society relations manifested in the form of a secular-religious cleavage intertwined with problematic civil-military relations. Each phase of Turkey’s history is compared to cleavages and civil-military relations in Egypt, Tunisia and Libya. After analyzing the constitution-making processes in the latter three countries following the Arab revolts, the study concludes by discussing the viability of the Turkish model in the light of Turkey’s search for a new constitution.
