Through layer-by-layer assembly, the bis-Keggin-type heteropolyanion K10H3 [Nd(SiMo7W4O39)(2)] XH2O was successfully immobilized on a glassy carbon electrode surface grafted covalently by 4-aminobenzoic acid. The electrochemical behavior of the heteropolyanion was investigated. Cyclic voltammetry proved the uniform growth of the film. However, the characteristic redox peaks of the heteropolyanion in the film were deformed with increasing of the number of the multilayer film. The effect of pH on the redox behaviors of [Nd(SiMo7W4)(2)](13-) in the film was discussed. The multilayer film electrodes have excellent electrocatalytic activities to the reduction of BrO3-, HNO2 and H2O2.

The conductive alpha (2)-K7P2W17VO62/graphite/organoceramic composite was prepared by dispersing alpha (2)-K7P2W17VO62 and graphite powder in a propyltrimethoxysilane-based sol-gel solution; it was used as the electrode material for an amperometric hydrogen peroxide sensor. The modified electrode had a homogeneous mirror-like surface and showed well defined cyclic voltammograms. Square-wave voltammetry was employed to study the pH-dependent electrochemical behavior of c alpha (2)-K7P2W17VO62 doped in the graphite organoceramic matrix, and the experiment showed that both protons and sodium cations participated in the odor process. A hydrodynamic voltammetric experiment was performed to characterize the electrode as an amperometric sensor for the determination of hydrogen peroxide. The sensor can be renewed easily in a repeatable manner by a mechanical polishing step and has a long operational lifetime. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A new class of polyoxomelalate (POM)-modified electrodes is fabricated by the sol-gel technique and demonstrated for nitrite sensing. The electrode material comprises an interconnected dispersion of graphite powder and a uniform dispersion of isopolymolybdic anions (Mo8O26) in a porous methylsilicate matrix. The chemically modified electrodes showed well-defined cyclic voltammograms with three reversible redox couples in acidic aqueous solutions because of the good physicochemical compatibility of Mo8O26 and the carbon ceramic matrix. The Mo8O26-modified electrodes show good stability and reproducibility, especially the renewal repeatability by simple polishing in the event of surface fouling. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. Stable lipid film was made by casting dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and rutin onto the surface of a glassy carbon (GC) electrode. The electrochemical behavior of rutin in the DPPC film was studied. The modified electrode coated with rutin gave quasi-reversible reduction-oxidation peak on cyclic voltammogram in the phosphate buffer (pH 7.4). The peak current did not decrease apparently after stored at 4 degreesC for 8 hours in refrigerator. This model of biological membrane was used to investigate the oxidation of dihydronicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) by rutin. Rutin in the film acts as a mediator. The modified electrode shows a great enhancement and the anodic peak potential was reduced by about 220 mV in the oxidation of 5 X 10(-3) mol L-1 NADN compared with that obtained at a bare glassy carbon electrode. Novel ceramic-carbon electrodes (CCEs) containing 1:12-phosphomolybdic acid (PMo12) were constructed by homogeneously dispersing PMo12 and graphite powder into methyltrimethoxysilane-derived gel. Peak currents for the PMo12-doped CCE were surface-controlled at lower scan rates but diffusion-controlled at higher scan rates and peak potentials shifted to the negative potential direction with increasing pH. In addition, the electrode exhibited electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of ascorbic acid. The PMo12-modified CCE presented good chemical and mechanical stability and good surface renewability (ten successive polishing resulted in less than 5% relative standard deviation). 4-Aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA) was covalently grafted on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by amine cation radical formation in the electrooxidation process of the amino-containing compound. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurement proves the presence of 4-carboxylphenylamine monolayer on the GCE. The redox responses of various electroactive probes were investigated on the 4-ABA-modified GCE. Electron transfer to Fe(CN)(6)(3-) in solutions of various pHs was studied by both cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance analysis on the modified electrode. Changes in the solution pH value result in the variation of the terminal group charge state, based on which surface pK(a) values are estimated. The 4-ABA-modified GCE was used as a suitable charged substrate to fabricate polyoxometalates-consisting (POM-consisting) monolayer and multilayer films through layer-by-layer assembly based on electrostatic attraction. Cyclic voltammetry shows the uniform growth of these three-dimensional multilayer films. Taking K10H3[Pr-(SiMo7W4O39)(2)]. H2O (abbreviated as Pr(SiMo7W4)(2)), for example, the preparation and electrochemical behavior of its monolayer and multilayer film had been investigated in detail. This modification strategy is proven to be a general one suitable for anchoring many kinds of POMs on the 4-ABA-modified GCE.

A new type of silicomolybdate-methylsilicate-graphite composite material was prepared by the sol-gel technique and used for the fabrication of an amperometric nitrite sensor. The silicomolybdic anion acts as a catalyst, the graphite powder ensures conductivity by percolation, the silicate provides a rigid porous backbone and the methyl groups endow hydrophobicity and thus limit the wetting section of the modified electrode. Cyclic voltammetry, square-wave voltammetry and chronoamperometry were employed to characterize the sensor. The amperometric nitrite sensor exhibited a series of good properties: high sensitivity (1.771 mu A mmol(-1) dm(3)), a short response time (7 s), remarkable long-term stability and especially reproducibility of surface renewal in the event of electrode surface fouling.

A new type of organic-inorganic composite material was prepared by sol-gel method, and a peroxidase biosensor was fabricated by simply dropping sor-gel-peroxidase mixture onto glassy carbon electrode surface. The sol-gel composite film and enzyme membrane were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and EQCM, the electrochemical behavior of the biosensor was studied with potassium hexacyanoferrate(II) as a mediator, and the effects of pH and operating potential were explored for optimum analytical performance by using amperometric method. The response time of the biosensor was about 10 s; the linear range was up to 3.4 mM with a detection limit of 5 x 10(-7) M. The sensor also exhibited high sensitivity (15 mu A mM(-1)) and good long-term stability. In addition, the performance of the biosensor was investigated using flow injection analysis (FIA), and the determination of hydrogen peroxide in real samples was discussed. The sol-gel technique was used here to construct heteropolyanion-containing modified electrodes. This involves two steps, i.e. the first forming a functionalized sol-gel thin film on the surface of the glassy carbon electrode and then immersing the electrode into a heteropolyanion solution to incorporate the heteropolyanion into the sol-gel film. Here a Dawson-type heteropolyanion, K6P2W18O62 (P2W18), was used as a representative to illuminate the behavior of the as-prepared composite film. The electrochemical performance of the P2W18-modified electrode was studied with respect to the pH effect and long-term stability. The modified electrode exhibited a high electrocatalytic response for the reduction of BrO3- and NO2-. Steady-state amperometry was applied to characterize the electrode as an amperometric sensor for the determination of NO2-. The sensor had a linear range from 0.02 to 34 mM and a detection limit of 5 x 10(-6) M. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Through layer-by-layer assembly, undecatungstozincates monosubstituted by transition metals Mn, ZnW11 Mn (H2O) O-39(8-) was successfully immobilized on a glassy carbon electrode surface grafted covalently by 4-aminobenzoic acid. The electrochemical behavior of these polyoxometalates was investigated. Cyclic voltammetry proves the uniform growth of the film. They exhibit some special electrochemical properties in the films, different from those in homogeneous aqueous solution. The effect of pH on the redox behavior of ZnW11Mn(H2O)O-39(8-) in the film was discussed in detail. The multilayer film electrodes have an excellent electrocatalytic response to the reduction of H2O2 and BrO3-, and to the oxidation of ascorbic acid.

9,10-Phenanthrenequinone (PQ) supported on graphite powder by adsorption was dispersed in propyltrimethoxysilane-derived gels to yield a conductive composite which was used as electrode material to fabricate a PQ-modified carbon ceramic electrode. In this configuration, PQ acts as a catalyst, graphite powder guarantees conductivity by percolation, the silicate provides a rigid porous backbone, and the propyl groups endow hydrophobicity and thus limit the wetting region of the modified electrode. Square-wave voltammetry was exploited to investigate the pH-dependent electrochemical behavior of the composite electrode and an almost Nernstian response was obtained from pH 0.42 to 6.84. Because the chemically modified electrode can electrocatalyze the reduction of iodate in acidic aqueous solution (pH 2.45), it was used as an amperometric sensor for the determination of iodate in table salt. The advantages of the electrode are that it can be polished in the event of surface fouling, it is simple to prepare, has excellent chemical and mechanical stability, and the reproducibility of surface-renewal is good.

A stable lipid cast film was made by casting a lipid in chloroform onto a glassy carbon electrode. We imbedded a new mediator norepinephrine into this lipid cast film, which was considered as a biological membrane model. Through electro catalytic oxidation of ascorbic acid by this system, the anodic overpotential was reduced by about 250 mV compared with that obtained at a bare glassy carbon electrode. The electrochemical behavior of norepinephrine in the cast film was controlled by diffusion. The obtained diffusion coefficient of ascorbic acid was 1.87 x 10(-5) cm 2 s(-1). The catalytic current increased linearly with the concentration of ascorbic acid in the range from 0.5 to 10 mM. Using cyclic voltammetry, we obtained two peaks for ascorbic acid and uric acid in the same solution. The separation between the two peaks is about 147 mV. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. Manganous hexacyanoferrate (MnHCF) supported on graphite powder was dispersed into methyltrimethoxysilane-derived gels to yield a conductive composite, which was used as electrode material to construct a renewable three-dimensional MnHCF-modifed electrode. MnHCF acts as a catalyst, graphite powder ensures conductivity by percolation, the silicate provides a rigid porous backbone, and the methyl groups endow hydrophobicity and thus limit the wetting section of the modified electrode. Cyclic voltammetry was exploited to investigate the dependence of electrochemical behavior on supporting electrolytes containing various cations. The chemically modified electrode can electrocatalytically oxidize L-cysteine, and exhibits a distinct advantage of polishing in the event of surface fouling, as well as simple preparation, good chemical and mechanical stability, and good repeatability of surface renewal.

A hydrogen peroxide biosensor based on sol-gel-derived glasses doped with poly(ester sulfonic acid) Eastman AQ 55D was constructed. Thionine (TH), as a mediator, was incorporated in this matrix by electrostatic force between TH+ and the negatively charged sulfonic acid group in Eastman AQ polymer. Performance and characteristics of the sensor were evaluated with respect to response time, sensitivity and storage stability. The enzyme electrode has a sensitivity of 11.36 muA mM(-1) with a detection limit of 5.0 x 10(-7) M H2O2, and the sensor achieved 95% of the steady state current within 20 s. Cobalt(II) hexacyanoferrate (CoHCF) was deposited on graphite powder by an in situ chemical deposition procedure and then dispersed into methyltrimethoxysilane-derived gels to prepare a surface-renewable CoHCF-modified electrode. The electrochemical behavior of the modified electrode in different supporting electrolyte solutions was characterized by cyclic voltammetry. In addition, square-wave voltammetry was employed to investigate the pNa-dependent electrochemical behavior of the electrode. The CoHCF-modified electrode showed a high electrocatalytic activity toward thiosulfate oxidation and could thus be used as an amperometric thiosulfate sensor.
