Over the last 25 years, the effects of fatty acids on the immune system have been characterized using in vitro, animal and human studies. Advances in fatty acid biochemistry and molecular techniques have recently suggested new mechanisms by which fatty acids could potentially modify immune responses, including modification of the organization of cellular lipids and interaction with nuclear receptors. Possibilities for the clinical applications of n-3 PUFA are now developing. The present review focuses on the hypothesis that the anti-inflammatory properties of n-3 PUFA in the arterial wall may contribute to the protective effects of n-3 PUFA in CVD, as suggested by epidemiological and secondary prevention studies. Studies are just beginning to show that dietary n-3 PUFA can be incorporated into plaque lipid in human subjects, where they may influence the morphology and stability of the atherosclerotic lesion.

Purpose of review This review critically evaluates recent studies investigating the effects of fatty acids on immune and inflammatory responses in both healthy individuals and in patients with inflammatory diseases, with some reference to animal studies where relevant. It examines recent findings describing the cellular and molecular basis for the modulation of immune function by fatty acids. The newly emerging area of diet-genotype interactions will also be discussed, with specific reference to the anti-inflammatory effects of fish oil. Recent findings Fatty acids are participants in many intracellular signalling pathways. They act as ligands for nuclear receptors regulating a host of cell responses, they influence the stability of lipid rafts, and modulate eicosanoid metabolism in cells of the immune system. Recent findings suggest that some or all of these mechanisms may be involved in the modulation of immune function by fatty acids. Summary Human studies investigating the relationship between dietary fatty acids and some aspects of the immune response have been disappointingly inconsistent. This review presents the argument that most studies have not been adequately powered to take into account the influence of variation (genotypic or otherwise) on parameters of immune function. There is well-documented evidence that fatty acids modulate T lymphocyte activation, and recent findings describe a range of potential cellular and molecular mechanisms. However, there are still many questions remaining, particularly with respect to the roles of nuclear receptors, for which fatty acids act as ligands, and the modulation of eicosanoid synthesis, for which fatty acids act as precursors.

Advanced prostate cancer is not curable by current treatment strategies indicating a significant need for new chemotherapeutic options. Highly substituted ansatitanocene compounds have shown promising cytotoxic activity in a range of cancers. The objectives of this study are to examine the effects of these titanocene compounds on prostate cancer cells. Prostate cell lines were treated with three novel titanocene compounds and compared to titanocene dichloride and cisplatin. Percent apoptosis, viability and cell cycle were assessed using propidium iodide DNA incorporation with flow cytometry. Cytochrome C was assessed by western blotting of mitochondrial and cytoplasmic fractions. Apoptosis Inducing Factor was assessed by confocal microscopy. These novel compounds induced more apoptosis compared to cisplatin in a dose dependent manner. Compound Y had the most significant effect on cell cycle and apoptosis. Despite the release of cytochrome C from the mitochondrial fraction there was no inhibition of apoptosis with the pan caspase inhibitor, ZVAD-FMK. AIF was shown to translocate from the cytosol to the nucleus mediating a caspase independent cell death. Bcl-2 over expressing PC-3 cells, which were resistant to cisplatin induced apoptosis, underwent apoptosis following treatment with all the titanocene compounds. This study demonstrates possible mechanisms by which these novel titanocene compounds can mediate their apoptotic effect in vitro. The fact that they can induce more apoptosis than cisplatin in advanced cancer cell lines would confer an advantage over cisplatin. They represent exciting new agents with future potential for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer.

Objective: For the evaluation of the energetic performance of combined renewable heating systems that supply space heat and domestic hot water for single family houses, dynamic behaviour, component interactions, and control of the system play a crucial role and should be included in test methods. Methods: New dynamic whole system test methods were developed based on “hardware in the loop” concepts. Three similar approaches are described and their differences are discussed. The methods were applied for testing solar thermal systems in combination with fossil fuel boilers (heating oil and natural gas), biomass boilers, and/or heat pumps. Results: All three methods were able to show the performance of combined heating systems under transient operating conditions. The methods often detected unexpected behaviour of the tested system that cannot be detected based on steady state performance tests that are usually applied to single components. Conclusion: Further work will be needed to harmonize the different test methods in order to reach comparable results between the different laboratories. Practice implications: A harmonized approach for whole system tests may lead to new test standards and improve the accuracy of performance prediction as well as reduce the need for field tests.

Propolis has been used empirically for centuries and it was always mentioned as an immunomodulatory agent. In recent years, in vitro and in vivo assays provided new information concerning its mechanisms of action, thus a review dealing with propolis and the immune system became imperative. This review compiles data from our laboratory as well as from other researchers, focusing on its chemical composition and botanical sources, the seasonal effect on its composition and biological properties, its immunomodulatory and antitumor properties, considering its effects on antibody production and on different cells of the immune system, involving the innate and adaptive immune response. In vitro and in vivo assays demonstrated the modulatory action of propolis on murine peritoneal macrophages, increasing their microbicidal activity. Its stimulant action on the lytic activity of natural killer cells against tumor cells, and on antibody production was demonstrated. Propolis inhibitory effects on lymphoproliferation may be associated to its anti-inflammatory property. In immunological assays, the best results were observed when propolis was administered over a short-term to animals. Propolis antitumor property and its anticarcinogenic and antimutagenic potential are discussed. Since humans have used propolis for different purposes and propolis-containing products have been marketed, the knowledge of its properties with scientific basis is not only of academic interest but also of those who use propolis as well. This review opens a new perspective on the investigation of propolis biological properties, mainly with respect to the immune system. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V.. All rights reserved.

The Columbia Channel (CCS) system is a depositional system located in the South Brazilian Basin, south of the Vitoria-Trindade volcanic chain. It lies in a WNW-ESE direction on the continental rise and abyssal plain, at a depth of between 4200 and 5200 m. It is formed by two depocenters elongated respectively south and north of the channel that show different sediment patterns. The area is swept by a deep western boundary current formed by AABW. The system has been previously interpreted has a mixed turbidite-contourite system. More detailed study of seismic data permits a more precise definition of the modern channel morphology, the system stratigraphy as well as the sedimentary processes and control. The modern CCS presents active erosion and/or transport along the channel. The ancient Oligo-Neogene system overlies a ""upper Cretaceous-Paleogene"" sedimentary substratum (Unit U1) bounded at the top by a major erosive ""late Eocene-early Oligocene"" discordance (D2). This ancient system is subdivided into 2 seismic units (U2 and U3). The thick basal U2 unit constitutes the larger part of the system. It consists of three subunits bounded by unconformities: D3 (""Oligocene-Miocene boundary""), D4 (""late Miocene"") and D5 (""late Pliocene""). The subunits have a fairly tabular geometry in the shallow NW depocenter associated with predominant turbidite deposits. They present a mounded shape in the deep NE depocenter, and are interpreted as forming a contourite drift. South of the channel, the deposits are interpreted as a contourite sheet drift. The surficial U3 unit forms a thin carpet of deposits. The beginning of the channel occurs at the end of U1 and during the formation of D2. Its location seems to have been determined by active faults. The channel has been active throughout the late Oligocene and Neogene and its depth increased continuously as a consequence of erosion of the channel floor and deposit aggradation along its margins. Such a mixed turbidite-contourite system (or fan drift) is characterized by frequent, rapid lateral facies variations and by unconformities that cross the whole system and are associated with increased AABW circulation. Malakoplakia is a rare chronic granulomatous disease of unknown cause. It is thought to be caused by an acquired bactericidal defect of macrophages. Malakoplakia is associated with chronic infections and immunosuppression. Although it occurs mainly in the urinary tract, it has already been reported in almost every organ system. The isolation of bacteria, especially Escherichia coli, is common in malakoplakia patients. Here, we present a case of primary cutaneous malakoplakia in a kidney transplant recipient who had been taking prednisone, tacrolimus, and mycophenolate. Culture of a lesion grew Burkholderia cepacia complex. Treatment with high doses of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole was successful. We also present a systematic review of the literature, identifying 4 previously reported cases of malakoplakia after renal transplantation under similar immunosuppressive therapy, most occurring in the urinary tract or perineum and following benign courses to cure. Data in the literature suggest that malakoplakia has become even rarer since changes were made in the immunosuppressive therapy employed after kidney transplantation.

The objective of this study was to undertake a critical reflection regarding assessment as a managerial tool that promotes the inclusion of nurses in the health system management process. Nurses, because of their education and training, which encompasses knowledge in both the clinical and managerial fields and is centered on care, have the potential to assume a differentiated attitude in management, making decisions and proposing health policies. Nevertheless, it is necessary to first create and consolidate an expressive inclusion in decisive levels of management. Assessment is a component of management, the results of which may contribute to making decisions that are more objective and allow for improving healthcare interventions and reorganizing health practice within a political, economic, social and professional context; it is also an area for the application of knowledge that has the potential to change the current panorama of including nurses in management.

Food intake and nutritional status modify the physiological responses of the immune system to illness and infection and regulate the development of chronic inflammatory processes, such as kidney disease. Adipose tissue secretes immune-related proteins called adipokines that have pleiotropic effects on both the immune and neuroendocrine systems, linking metabolism and immune physiology. Leptin, an adipose tissue-derived adipokine, displays a variety of immune and physiological functions, and participates in several immune responses. Here, we review the current literature on the role of leptin in kidney diseases, linking adipose tissue and the immune system with kidney-related disorders. The modulation of this adipose hormone may have a major impact on the treatment of several immune- and metabolic-related kidney diseases.

[EN]Carbonate system variables were measured in the South Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean along a transect from South Africa to the southern limit of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) from February to March 2008. Eddies detached from the retroflection of the Agulhas Current increased the gradients observed along the fronts. Minima in the fugacity of CO2, fCO2, and maxima in pH on either side of the frontal zone were observed, noting that within the frontal zone fCO2 reached maximum values and pH was at a minimum.Vertical distributions of water masses were described by their carbonate system properties and their relationship to CFC concentrations. Upper Circumpolar Deep Water (UCDW) and Lower Circumpolar Deep Water (LCDW) offered pHT,25 values of 7.56 and 7.61, respectively. The UCDW also had higher concentrations of CFC-12 (>0.2 pmol kg?1) as compared to deeper waters, revealing that UCDW was mixed with recently ventilated waters. Calcite and aragonite saturation states ( ) were also affected by the presence of these two water masses with high carbonate concentrations. The aragonite saturation horizon was observed at 1000m in the subtropical area and north of the Subantarctic Front. At the position of the Polar Front, and under the influence of UCDW and LCDW, the aragonite saturation horizon deepened from 800m to 1500m at 50.37_ S, and reached 700m south of 57.5_ S. High latitudes proved to be the most sensitive areas to predicted anthropogenic carbon increase. Buffer coefficients related to changes in [CO2], [H+] and with changes in dissolved inorganic carbon (CT)and total alkalinity (AT) offered minima values in the Antarctic IntermediateWater and UCDWlayers. These coefficients suggest that a small increase in CT will sharply decrease the status of pH and carbonate saturation. Here we present data that suggest that south of 55_ S, surface water will be under-saturated with respect to aragonite within the next few decades.
