Surface modification of titania aerogel films by oxygen plasma treatment for enhanced dye adsorption
Resumo:
Titania aerogels were synthesized by sol-gel route followed by ambient pressure subcritical drying technique. The aerogels synthesized in the present work possess a maximum surface area of 252 m(2)/g. The pore size distribution is between 2 and 30 nm which confirms their mesoporosity. The oxygen plasma treatment on titania aerogel thin films improved the surface area up to 273 m(2)/g and produced additional hydrophilic groups on the surface. It is confirmed by BET surface area, XPS and thermal analysis in conjunction with dye adsorption studies. After plasma treatment the dye adsorption capacity was increased 2.5 times higher than that of untreated aerogel film. The increased surface area and the hydrophilic groups generated on the titania aerogel surface during plasma treatment are responsible for enhanced dye adsorption. The overall nanoporous morphology of titania aerogel is preserved after plasma treatment. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This work describes the deposition, annealing and characterisation of semi-insulating oxygen-doped silicon films at temperatures compatible with polysilicon circuitry on glass. The semi-insulating layers are deposited by the plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition technique from silane (SiH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) and helium (He) gas mixtures at a temperature of 350 °C. The as-deposited films are then furnace annealed at 600 °C which is the maximum process temperature. Raman analysis shows the as-deposited and annealed films to be completely amorphous. The most important deposition variable is the N2O SiH4 gas ratio. By varying the N2O SiH4 ratio the conductivity of the annealed films can be accurately controlled, for the first time, down to a minimum of ≈10-7Ω-1cm-1 where they exhibit a T -1 4 temperature dependence indicative of a hopping conduction mechanism. Helium dilution of the reactant gases is shown to improve both film uniformity and reproducibility. A model for the microstructure of these semi-insulating amorphous oxygen-doped silicon films is proposed to explain the observed physical and electrical properties. © 1995.

We investigate the morphological stability of epitaxial thin elastic films on a substrate by the Casimir force between the film surface and a flat plate. Critical undulation wavelengths are derived for two different limit conditions. Consideration of the Casimir force in both limit cases decreases the critical wavelength of the surface perturbation.

A temperature-controlled pool boiling (TCPB) device has been developed to study the bubble behavior and heat transfer in pool boiling phenomenon both in normal gravity and in microgravity. A thin platinum wire of 60 mu m in diameter and 30 mm in length is simultaneously used as heater and thermometer. The fluid is R113 at 0.1 MPa and subcooled by 26 degrees C nominally for all cases. Three modes of heat transfer, namely single-phase natural convection, nucleate boiling, and two-mode transition boiling, are observed in the experiment both in microgravity aboard the 22nd Chinese recoverable satellite and in normal gravity on the ground before and after the space flight. Dynamic behaviors of vapor bubbles observed in these experiments are reported and analyzed in the present paper. In the regime of fully developed nucleate boiling, the interface oscillation due to coalescence of adjacent tiny bubbles is the primary reason of the departure of bubbles in microgravity. On the contrary, in the discrete bubble regime, it's observed that there exist three critical bubble diameters in microgravity, dividing the whole range of the observed bubbles into four regimes. Firstly, tiny bubbles are continually forming and growing on the heating surface before departing slowly from the wire when their sizes exceed some value of the order of 10(-1) mm. The bigger bubbles with about several millimeters in diameter stay on the wire, oscillate along the wire, and coalesce with adjacent bubbles. The biggest bubble with diameter of the order of 10 mm, which was formed immediately after the onset of boiling, stays continuously
Lateral motion and departure of vapor bubbles in nucleate pool boiling on thin wires in microgravity

A space experiment on bubble behavior and heat transfer in subcooled pool boiling phenomenon has been performed utilizing the temperature-controlled pool boiling (TCPB) device both in normal gravity in the laboratory and in microgravity aboard the 22(nd) Chinese recoverable satellite. The fluid is R113 at 0.1 MPa and subcooled by 26 degrees C nominally. A thin platinum wire of 60 mu m in diameter and 30mm in length is simultaneously used as heater and thermometer. Only the lateral motion and the departure of discrete vapor bubbles in nucleate pool boiling are reported and analyzed in the present paper. A scale analysis on the Marangoni convection surrounding a bubble in the process of subcooled nucleate pool boiling leads to formulas of the characteristic velocity of the lateral motion and its observability. The predictions consist with the experimental observations. Considering the Marangoni effect, a new qualitative model is proposed to reveal the mechanism underlying the bubble departure processes and a quantitative agreement can also be acquired.

A new set of experimental data of subcooled pool boiling on a thin wire in rnicrogravity aboard the 22nd Chinese recoverable satellite is reported in the present paper. The temperature-control led heating method is used. The results of the experiments in normal gravity before and after the flight experiment are also presented, and compared with those in microgravity. The working fluid is degassed R113 at 0.1 MPa and subcooled by 26 degrees C nominally. A thin platinum wire of 60 mu m in diameter and 30 mm in length is simultaneously used as heater and thermometer. It is found that the heat transfer of nucleate pool boiling is slightly enhanced in microgravity comparing with those in normal gravity. It is also found that the correlation of Lienhard and Dhir can predict the CHF with good agreement, although the range of the dimensionless radius is extended by three or more decades above the originally set limit. Three critical bubble diameters are observed in microgravity, which divide the observed vapor bubbles into four regimes with different sizes. Considering the Marangoni effect, a qualitative model is proposed to reveal the mechanism underlying the bubble departure processes, and a quantitative agreement can also be acquired.

The interaction of SO_2 with γ - Al_2O_3 and the deposition of H_2 permselective SiO_2 films have been investigated. The adsorption and oxidative adsorption of SO_2 on γ - Al_2O_3 have been examined at temperatures 500-700°C by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). At temperatures above 500°C most of SO_2 adsorbed on the strong sites on alumina. The adsorbed SO_2 species was characterized by an IR band at 1065 cm^(-1). The equilibrium coverage and initial rate of adsorption decreased with temperature suggesting a two-step adsorption. When γ - Al_2O_3 was contacted with a mixture of SO_2 and O_2, adsorption of SO_2 and oxidation of the adsorbed SO_2 to a surface sulfate characterized by broad IR bands at 1070 cm^(-1), 1390 cm^(-1) took place. The results of a series of TGA experiments under different atmospheres strongly suggest that surface SO_2 and surface sulfate involve the same active sites such that SO_2 adsorption is inhibited by already formed sulfate. The results also indicate a broad range of site strengths.
The desorption of adsorbed SO_2 and the reductive desorption of oxidatively adsorbed SO_2 have been investigated by microreactor experiments and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Temperature programmed reduction (TPR) of adsorbed SO_2 showed that SO_2 was desorbed without significant reaction with H_2 when H_2 concentration was low while considerable reaction occurred when 100% H_2 was used. SO_2 adsorbed on the strong sites on alumina was reduced to sulfur and H_2S. The isothermal reduction experiments of oxidatively adsorbed SO_2 reveal that the rate of reduction is very slow below 550°C even with 100% H_2. The reduction product is mainly composed of SO_2. TPR experiments of oxidatively adsorbed SO_2 showed that H_2S arose from a sulfate strongly chemisorbed on the surface.
Films of amorphous SiO_2 were deposited within the walls of porous Vycor tubes by SiH_4 oxidation in an opposing reactants geometry : SiH_4 was passed inside the tube while O_2 was passed outside the tube. The two reactants diffused opposite to each other and reacted within a narrow front inside the tube wall to form a thin SiO_2 film. Once the pores were plugged the reactants could not reach each other and the reaction stopped. At 450°C and 0.1 and 0.33 atm of SiH_4 and O_2, the reaction was complete within 15 minutes. The thickness of the SiO_2 film was estimated to be about 0.1 µm. Measurements of H_2 and N_2 permeation rates showed that the SiO_2 film was highly selective to H_2 permeation. The H_2:N_2 flux at 450°C varied between 2000-3000.
Thin SiO_2 films were heat treated in different gas mixtures to determine their stability in functioning as high-temperature hydrogen-permselective membranes. The films were heat-treated at 450-700°C in dry N_2, dry O_2, N_2-H_2O, and O_2-H_2O mixtures. The permeation rates of H_2 and N_2 changed depending on the original conditions of film formation as well as on the heat treatment. Heating in dry N_2 slowly reduced the permeation rates of both H_2 and N_2. Heating in a N_2-H_2O atmosphere led to a steeper decline of H_2 permeability. But the permeation rate of N_2 increased or decreased according to whether the film deposition had been carried out in the absence or presence of H_2O vapor, respectively. Thermal treatment in O_2 caused rapid decline of the permeation rates of H_2 and N_2 in films that were deposited under dry conditions. The decline was moderate in films deposited under wet conditions.

In this paper, GdFeCo/DyFeCo exchange-coupled double-layer films used for center aperture type magnetically induced super resolution were investigated through experiments and theoretical calculation. The samples were prepared by magnetron sputtering method. The polar Kerr effect was measured to prove the spin reorientation of the readout layer. Theoretical study of magnetization profiles was performed on the basis of the mean-field theory and the continuum model. The theoretical results showed that the magnetization orientation of the readout layer changed gradually from in-plane to out-of-plane with the rise of the temperature. Theoretical analysis explained the experimental results successfully. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Crystallization in amorphous Ge2Sb2Te5 films by irradiation with femtosecond laser was investigated. The reflectivity and X-ray diffraction measurements confirmed that the crystalline state has been achieved in amorphous Ge2Sb2Te5 films under the irradiation of fermosecond laser with an average power of 65 mW at a frequency of 1000 Hz and a pulsed width of 120 fs. The surface morphology before and after femtosecond laser irradiation was studied by scanning electron microscope; results showed that the surface of films with irradiation of femtosecond laser was composed of some the crystallized micro-region. Spin-coated films of nickel 1,6,10,15,19,24,28,33-octa-iso-pentyloxy-2,3-naphthalocyanine complex were obtained and characterized by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. A linear relationship between the absorbance and solution concentration was observed. Low concentration solutions could afford smooth and homogeneous film surfaces as indicated by atomic force microscopy. The film structure was studied by small angle X-ray diffraction. The films were used for NO2 sensing experiments. The results indicate that the elevation of sensing temperature can shorten the response time and increase recovery ratio and response magnitude of the sensing films. High NO2 concentration can also shorten response time. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Optical properties were investigated of ZnO thin films grown oil (100) gamma-LiAlO2 (LAO) substrates by pulsed laser deposition method. C-axis oriented ZnO film was grown oil (100) LAO substrate at the substrate temperature of 550 degrees C. The transmittances of the films were over 85%. Peaks attributed to excitons were seen in the absorption spectra, indicating that the thin films have high crystallinity. Photoluminescence spectra were observed at room temperature; the peak at 550 urn is ascribed to oxygen vacancies in the ZnO films caused by the diffusion of Li from the substrate into the film during deposition. A series of silver films with different thickness were prepared under identical conditions by direct current magnetron sputtering. The optical properties of the silver films were measured using spectrophotometric techniques and the optical constants were calculated from reflection and transmission measurements made at near normal incidence. The results show that the optical properties and constants are affected by films' thickness. Below the critical thickness of 17 nm at which Ag film forms a continuous film, the optical properties and constants vary significantly as the thickness of films increases and then tends to a stable value which is reached at 41 nm. X-ray diffraction measurements were carried out to examine the structure and stress evolution of the Ag films as a function of films' thickness. It was found that the interplanar distance of (111) orientation decreases when the film thickness increases and tends to be close to that of bulk material. The compressive strains also decrease with increasing thickness. (C) 2007 Published by Elsevier B.V.
