Under hot-forming conditions characterized by high homologous temperatures and strain-rates, metals usually exhibit rate-dependent inelastic behavior. An elastic-viscoplastic constitutive model is presented here to describe metal behavior during hot-forming. The model uses an isotropic internal variable to represent the resistance offered to plastic deformation by the microstructure. Evolution equations are developed for the inelastic strain and the deformation resistance based on experimental results. A methodology is presented for extracting model parameters from constant true strain-rate compression tests performed at different temperatures. Model parameters are determined for an Al-1Mn alloy and an Al-Mg-Si alloy, and the predictions of the model are shown to be in good agreement with the experimental data. The crystal structures and magnetic properties of five new transition metal-azido complexes with two anionic [pyrazine-2-carboxylate (pyzc) and p-aminobenzoate (paba)] and two neutral [pyrazine (pyz) and pyridine (py)] coligands are reported All five complexes were synthesized bysolvothermal methods The complex [Co-2(pyzc)(2)(N-3)(2)(H2O)(2)](n) (1) is 1D and exhibit canted antiferromagnetism, while the 3D complex [MnNa(pyzc)(N-3)(2)(H2O)(2)](n) (2) has a complicated structure and is weakly ferromagnetic in nature [Mn-2(paba)(2)(N-3)(2)(H2O)(2)](n) (3). is a 2D sheet and the Mn-II ions are found to be antiferromagnetically coupled The isostructural 2D complexes [Cu-3(pyz)(2)(N-3)(6)](n) (4) and [Cu-3(py)(2)(N-3)(6)](n) (5) resemble remarkably in their magnetic properties exhibiting moderately strong ferromagnetism. Density functional theory calculations (B3LYP functional) have been performed to provide a qualitative theoretical interpietation of the overall magnetic behavior shown by these complexes.

A detailed study, involving the synthesis of a single-source precursor containing two metal ions sharing the same crystallographic site, has been undertaken to elucidate the use of such a single-source precursor in a CVD process for growing thin films of oxides comprising these two metals, ensuring a uniform composition and distribution of metal ions. The substituted complexes Cr1-xAlx(acac)(3), where acac = acetyl-acetonate, have been prepared by a co-synthesis method, and characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy. TGA/DTA measurements, and single crystal X-ray diffraction at low temperature. All the studied compositions crystallize in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c with Z = 4 in the unit cell. It was observed that the ratio (Al:Cr) of the site occupancy for the metal ions, obtained from single crystal refinement, is in agreement with the results obtained from complexometric titrations. All the solid state structures have the metal in an octahedral environment forming six-membered chelate rings. M-O acac bond lengths and disorder in the terminal carbon have been studied in detail for these substituted metal-organic complexes. One composition among these was chosen to evaluate their suitability as a single-source precursor in a LPMOCVD process (low-pressure metal-organic chemical vapour deposition) for the deposition of a substituted binary metal oxide thin film. The resulting thin films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and infrared spectroscopy. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Pyridinium poly(hydrogen fluoride) reacts with the oxide of vanadium(V) and chlorides of chromium(III), iron (III) and Co(II) at room temperature forming the pyridinium salts of hexafluoro vanadate(V), hexafluorochromate(III), hexafluoroferrate(III) and hexafluorocobaltate(II) in near quantitative yields (80%). These pyridinium salts are the precursors for the preparation of the alkali metal hexafluorometallates by metathetic reactions in acetonitrile medium with the corresponding metal chlorides. The prepared salts have been identified by their infrared spectral data and elemental analysis.

The use of a number of perovskite phases M MO3-x, as the only forming additive in ZnO ceramics, produces a high nonlinearity index, ?(up to 45), where M is a multivalent transition?metal ion and M is an alkaline earth or a rare?earth ion. From this study, the formation parameters crucial to high nonlinearity, such as nonstoichiometry in the as?received ZnO powder, low x values of the additives and fast cooling rate after the sintering, are explainable on the basis of a depletion layer formation at the presintering stage. This is because of the surface states arising out of the chemisorbed oxygen. The depletion layer is retained during sintering as a result of the higher valence state of M ions, preferentially present at the grain?boundary regions. The fast cooling freezes in the high?temperature concentration of donor?type defects, thereby decreasing the depletion layer width.

A new water soluble cationic imidazopyridine species, viz. (1E)-1-((pyridin-2-yl)methyleneamino)-3-(3(pyridin-2-yl) imidazo1,5-a]pyridin-2(3H)-yl)propan-2-ol (1), as a metal chelator is prepared as its PF6 salt and characterized. Compound 1 shows fluorescence at 438 nm on excitation at 342 nm in Tris-HCl buffer giving a fluorescence quantum yield (phi) of 0.105 and a life-time of 5.4 ns. Compound 1, as an avid DNA minor groove binder, shows pUC19 DNA cleavage activity in UV-A light of 365 nm forming singlet oxygen species in a type-II pathway. The photonuclease potential of 1 gets enhanced in the presence of Fe2+, Cu2+ or Zn2+. Compound 1 itself displays anticancer activity in HeLa, HepG2 and Jurkat cells with an enhancement on addition of the metal ions. Photodynamic effect of 1 at 365 nm also gets enhanced in the presence of Fe2+ and Zn2+. Fluorescence-based cell cycle analysis shows a significant dead cell population in the sub-G1 phase of the cell cycle suggesting apoptosis via ROS generation. A significant change in the nuclear morphology is observed from Hoechst 33258 and an acridine orange/ethidium bromide (AO/EB) dual nuclear staining suggesting apoptosis in cells when treated with 1 alone or in the presence of the metal ions. Apoptosis is found to be caspase-dependent. Fluorescence imaging to monitor the distribution of 1 in cells shows that 1 in the presence of metal ions accumulates predominantly in the cytoplasm. Enhanced uptake of 1 into the cells within 12 h is observed in the presence of Fe2+ and Zn2+.

The thiocarbohydrazone Schiff-base ligand with a nitrogen and sulphur donor was synthesized through condensation of pyridine-2-carbaldehyde and thiocarbohydrazide. Schiff-base ligands have the ability to conjugate with metal salts. A series of metal complexes with a general formula [MCl(2)(H(2)L)]center dot nH(2)O (M=Ni, Co, Cu and Zn) were synthesized by forming complexes of the N(1),N5-bis[pyridine-2-methylene]thiocarbohydrazone (H2L) Schiff-base ligand. These metal complexes and ligand were characterized by using ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR), (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopy and mass spectroscopy, physicochemical characterization, CHNS and conductivity. The biological activity of the synthesized ligand was investigated by using Escherichia coli DNA as target. The DNA interaction of the synthesized ligand and complexes on E. coli plasmid DNA was investigated in the aqueous medium by UV-Vis spectroscopy and the binding constant (K(b)) was calculated. The DNA binding studies showed that the metal complexes had an improved interaction due to trans-geometrical isomers of the complexes than ligand isomers in cis-positions. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. A reaction of copper acetate, 5-nitroisophthalic acid in a water-methanol mixture under solvothermal condition results in a new metal-organic framework compound, [Cu(5)(mu(3)-OH)(2)(H(2)O)(6){(NO(2))-C(6)H(3)-(COO)(2)}(4)]center dot 5H(2)O, (1). The compound contains Cu5 pentameric cluster units connected by 5-nitro isophthalate (NIPA) moieties forming a CdCl(2)-like layer, which are further connected by another NIPA moiety forming the three-dimensional structure. The water molecules in (1) can be reversibly adsorbed. The removal of water accompanies a change in the colour as well as a structural re-organization. Magnetic studies suggest strong antiferromagnetie correlations between the Cu5 cluster units. The compound (1) exhibits heterogeneous Lewis acid catalysis for the cyanosilylation of imines with more than 95 % selectivity. Compound (1) has been characterized by IR, UV-vis, TGA, powder XRD studies.

Two copper-containing compounds [Cu(3)(mu(3)-OH)(2)-(H(2)O)(2){(SO(3))-C(6)H(3)-(COO)(2)}(CH(3)COO)] , I, and [Cu(5)(mu(3)-OH)(2)(H(2)O)(6){(NO(2))-C(6)H(3)-(COO)(2)}(4)]center dot 5H(2)O, II, were prepared using sulphoisophthalic and nitroisophthalic acids. The removal of the coordinated water molecules in the compounds was investigated using in situ single crystal to single crystal (SCSC) transformation studies, temperature-dependent powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The efficacy of SCSC transformation studies were established by the observation of dimensionality cross-over from a two-dimensional (I) to a three-dimensional structure, Cu(6)(mu(3)-OH)(4){(SO(3))-C(6)H(3)-(COO)(2)}(2)(CH(3)COO)(2), Ia, during the removal of the coordinated water molecules. Compound H exhibited a structural reorganization forming Cu(5)(mu(2)-OH)(2){(NO(2))C(6)H(3)-(COO)(2))(4)], Ha, possessing trimeric (Cu(3)O(12)) and dimeric (Cu(2)O(8)) copper clusters. The PXRD studies indicate that the three-dimensional structure (Ia) is transient and unstable, reverting back to the more stable two-dimensional structure (I) on cooling to room temperature. Compound Ha appears to be more stable at room temperature. The rehydration/dehydration studies using a modified TGA setup suggest complete rehydration of the water molecules, indicating that the water molecules in both compounds are labile. A possible model for the observed changes in the structures has been proposed. Magnetic studies indicate changes in the exchanges between the copper centers in Ha, whereas no such behavior was observed in Ia.

Dendrimers are ideal platforms to study multivalent effects due to the presence of uniform end groups at their peripheries. This report concerns with a study of multivalent dendritic catalysts, both within and across dendrimer generations, and their effects to mediate C-C bond forming reactions on multivalent substrates that have two and three acrylate reactive sites. As many as fourteen multivalent dendritic catalysts were prepared using 0-3 generations of poly(propyl ether imine) dendrimers, incorporated with Pd(II) catalytic sites, both within and across the dendrimer generations. C-C Bond forming reactions of these substrates with iodobenzene, mediated by uniform concentration of the metal across all catalysts, showed formation of partially and fully functionalized cinnamates in varying ratios, depending on the extent of clustering of catalytic moieties at the peripheries of dendrimers within a dendrimer generation. In a given generation, higher clustering of catalytic moieties greatly assisted multiple C-C bond formations than presenting the same in lesser number. The studies demonstrate true benefits of clustering catalytic moieties within a dendrimer generation and the beneficial effects applicable to catalysis of substrates presenting more than one reactive center. A hydrothermal reaction of cobalt nitrate, 4,4'-oxybis(benzoic acid) (OBA), 1,2,4-triazole, and NaOH gave rise to a deep purple colored compound Co-4(triazolate)(2)(OBA)(3)], I, possessing Co-4 clusters. The Co-4 clusters are connected together through the tirazolate moieties forming a two-dimensional layer that closely resembles the TiS2 layer. The layers are pillared by the OBA units forming the three-dimensional structure. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first observation of a pillared TiS2 layer in a metal-organic framework compound. Magnetic studies in the temperature range 1.8-300 K indicate strong antiferromagetic interactions for Co-4 clusters. The structure as well as the magnetic behavior of the present compound has been compared with the previously reported related compound Co-2(mu 3-OH)(mu(2)-H2O)(pyrazine)(OBA)(OBAH)] prepared using pyrazine as the linker between the Co-4 clusters.

Sequential transformation in a family of metal-organic framework compounds has been investigated employing both a solid-state as well as a solution mediated route. The compounds, cobalt oxy-bis(benzoate) and manganese oxybis(benzoate) having a two-dimensional structure, were reacted with bipyridine forming cobalt oxy-bis(benzoate)-4,4'-bipyridine and manganese oxy-bis(benzoate)-4,4'-bipyridine, respectively. The bipyridine containing compounds appear to form sequentially through stable intermediates. For the cobalt system, the transformation from a two-dimensional compound, Co(H2O)(2)(OBA)] (OBA = 4,4'-oxy-bis(benzoate)), I, to two different three-dimensional compounds, Co(bpy)(OBA)]center dot bpy, II, (bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine) and Co(bpy)(0.5)(OBA)], III, and reversibility between II and III have been investigated. In the manganese system, transformation from a two-dimensional compound, Mn(H2O)(2)(OBA)], Ia, to two different three-dimensional compounds, Mn (bpy)(OBA)]center dot bpy, Ha and Ha to Mn(bpy)(0.5)(OBA)], Ilia, has been investigated. It has also been possible to identify intermediate products during these transformation reactions. The possible pathways for the formation of the compounds were postulated.

The feasibility of using transition metal fragments to stabilize B2H4 in planar configuration by donating 2 electrons to the boron moiety is investigated. Building upon the existing theoretical and experimental data and aided by the isolobal analogy, the model transition metal complexes Cr(CO)(4)B2H4 (6), Mn(CO)-CpB2H4 (7), Fe(CO)(3)B2H4 (8) and CoCpB2H4 (9) are chosen to illustrate this unique bonding feature bond strengthening with pi-back donation. Other possible types of complexes with B2H4 and the metal fragment are also explored and the energies are compared. One of the low energy isomers wherein the planar B2H4 interacts with the metal fragment in an in-plane fashion represents a unique case study for the Dewar-Chatt-Duncanson model. In this complex the back-donation from the metal fills the p bonding orbital between the two boron atoms thus forming a B=B double bond.

The study of models for ``metal-enzyme-substrate'' interaction has been a proactive area of research owing to its biological and pharmacological importance. In this regard the ternary copper uracil complex with 1,10-phenanthroline represents metal-enzyme-substrate system for DNA binding enzymes. The synthesis of the complex, followed by slow evaporation of the reaction mixture forms two concomitant solvatomorph crystals viz., {Cu(phen)(mu-ura)(H2O)](n)center dot H2O (1a)} and {Cu(phen)(mu-ura)(H2O)](n)center dot CH3OH (1b)}. Both complexes are structurally characterized, while elemental analysis, IR and EPR spectra were recorded for 1b (major product). In both complexes, uracil coordinates uniquely via N1 and N3 nitrogen atom acting as a bidentate bridging ligand forming a 1-D polymer. The two solvatomorphs were quantitatively analyzed for the differences with the aid of Hirshfeld surface analysis. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We employed in situ pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to investigate the mechanism of the metal-insulator transition (MIT) in NdNiO3 (NNO) thin films, grown on NdGaO3(110) and LaAlO3(100) substrates. In the metallic phase, we observe three-dimensional hole and electron Fermi surface (FS) pockets formed from strongly renormalized bands with well-defined quasiparticles. Upon cooling across the MIT in NNO/NGO sample, the quasiparticles lose coherence via a spectral weight transfer from near the Fermi level to localized states forming at higher binding energies. In the case of NNO/LAO, the bands are apparently shifted upward with an additional holelike pocket forming at the corner of the Brillouin zone. We find that the renormalization effects are strongly anisotropic and are stronger in NNO/NGO than NNO/LAO. Our study reveals that substrate-induced strain tunes the crystal field splitting, which changes the FS properties, nesting conditions, and spin-fluctuation strength, and thereby controls the MIT via the formation of an electronic order parameter with QAF similar to (1/4,1/4,1/4 +/- delta).
