In 1994 the Iowa Department of Transportation constructed a 7.2-mile Portland Cement Concrete overlay project in Iowa County on Iowa Highway 21. The research work was conducted in cooperation with the Department of Civil Engineering and the Federal Highway Administration under the Iowa Highway Research Board project HR-559. The project was constructed to evaluate the performance of an ultrathin concrete overlay during a 5-year period. The experiment included variables of base surface preparation, overlay depth, joint spacing, fiber reinforcement, and the sealed or non-sealed joints. The project was instrumented to measure overlay/base interface temperatures and strains. Visual distress surveys and deflection testing were also used to monitor performance. Coring and direct shear testing was accomplished 3 times during the research period. Results of the testing and monitoring are identified in the report. The experiment was very successful and the results provide an insight into construction and design needs to be considered in tailoring a portland cement concrete overlay to a performance need. The results also indicate a method to monitor bond with nondestructive methods.

In this paper are described the results of a research project that had the objective of developing construction procedures for restoring load transfer in existing jointed concrete pavements and of evaluating the effectiveness of the restoration methods. A total of 28 test sections with various load transfer devices were placed. The devices include split pipe, figure eight, vee, double vee, and dowel bars. Patching materials used on the project included three types of fast-setting grouts, three brands of polymer concrete, and plain portland cement concrete. The number and spacing of the devices and dowel bars were also variables in the project. Dowel bars and double vee devices were used on the major portion of the project. Performance evaluations were based on deflection tests conducted with a 20,000-lb axle load. Horizontal joint movement measurements and visual observations were also made. The short-term performance data indicate good results with the dowel bar installations regardless of patching materials. The sections with split pipe, figure eight, and vee devices failed in bond during the first winter cycle. The results with the double vee sections indicate the importance of the patching material to the success or failure of the load transfer system: some sections are performing well and other sections are performing poorly with double vee devices. Horizontal joint movement measurements indicate that neither the dowel bars nor the double vee devices are restricting joint movement.

The Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) has become the "standard" for deflection testing of pavements. Iowa has used a Road Rater since 1976 to obtain deflection information. A correlation between the Road Rater and the FWD was needed if Iowa was going to continue with the Road Rater. Comparative deflection testing was done using a Road Rater Model 400 and a Pynatest 8000 FWD on 26 pavement sections. The SHRP contractor, Braun Intertec Pavement, Inc., provided the FWD testing. The r^2 for the linear correlations ranged from 0.90 to 0.99 for the different pavement types and sensor locations.

The use of Railroad Flatcars (RRFCs) as the superstructure on low-volume county bridges has been investigated in a research project conducted by the Bridge Engineering Center at Iowa State University. These bridges enable county engineers to replace old, inadequate county bridge superstructures for less than half the cost and in a shorter construction time than required for a conventional bridge. To illustrate their constructability, adequacy, and economy, two RRFC demonstration bridges were designed, constructed, and tested: one in Buchanan County and the other in Winnebago County. The Buchanan County Bridge was constructed as a single span with 56-ft-long flatcars supported at their ends by new, concrete abutments. The use of concrete in the substructure allowed for an integral abutment at one end of the bridge with an expansion joint at the other end. Reinforced concrete beams (serving as longitudinal connections between the three adjacent flatcars) were installed to distribute live loads among the RRFCs. Guardrails and an asphalt milling driving surface completed the bridge. The Winnebago County Bridge was constructed using 89-ft-long flatcars. Preliminary calculations determined that they were not adequate to span 89 ft as a simple span. Therefore, the flatcars were supported by new, steel-capped piers and abutments at the RRFCs' bolsters and ends, resulting in a 66-ft main span and two 10-ft end spans. Due to the RRFC geometry, the longitudinal connections between adjacent RRFCs were inadequate to support significant loads; therefore, transverse, recycled timber planks were utilized to effectively distribute live loads to all three RRFCs. A gravel driving surface was placed on top of the timber planks, and a guardrail system was installed to complete the bridge. Bridge behavior predicted by grillage models for each bridge was validated by strain and deflection data from field tests; it was found that the engineered RRFC bridges have live load stresses significantly below the AASHTO Bridge Design Specification limits. To assist in future RRFC bridge projects, RRFC selection criteria were established for visual inspection and selection of structurally adequate RRFCs. In addition, design recommendations have been developed to simplify live load distribution calculations for the design of the bridges. Based on the results of this research, it has been determined that through proper RRFC selection, construction, and engineering, RRFC bridges are a viable, economic replacement system for low-volume road bridges.

This Phase II follow-up study of IHRB Project TR-473 focused on the performance evaluation of rubblized pavements in Iowa. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the structural condition of existing rubblized concrete pavements across Iowa through Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) tests, Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) tests, visual pavement distress surveys, etc. Through backcalculation of FWD deflection data using the Iowa State University's advanced layer moduli backcalculation program, the rubblized layer moduli were determined for various projects and compared with each other for correlating with the long-term pavement performance. The AASHTO structural layer coefficient for rubblized layer was also calculated using the rubblized layer moduli. To validate the mechanistic-empirical (M-E) hot mix asphalt (HMA) overlay thickness design procedure developed during the Phase I study, the actual HMA overlay thicknesses from the rubblization projects were compared with the predicted thicknesses obtained from the design software. The results of this study show that rubblization is a valid option to use in Iowa in the rehabilitation of portland cement concrete pavements provided the foundation is strong enough to support construction operations during the rubblization process. The M-E structural design methodology developed during Phase I can estimate the HMA overlay thickness reasonably well to achieve long-lasting performance of HMA pavements. The rehabilitation strategy is recommended for continued use in Iowa under those conditions conducive for rubblization.

As truck traffic on Iowa secondary roads has increased, engineers have moved to concrete pavements of greater depths. Early designs included thickened edge pavements and depths of seven inches or greater. The designs typically did not have load transfer devices installed in the transverse joints and relied on aggregate interlock for this purpose. In some cases, aggregate interlock was not adequate to deal with the soils and traffic conditions and faulting of the joints has begun to appear. Engineers are now faced with the need to install or retrofit load transfer in the joints to preserve the pavements. Questions associated with this decision range from the type of dowel material to dowel diameter, spacing, number of bars, placement method, and construction techniques to be used to assure reduction or elimination of faulting. Buena Vista County constructed a dowel bar retrofit project on one mile of road. The plan called for addition of the dowels (2, 3, or 4) in the outer wheel path only and surface grinding in lieu of asphalt overlay. The project included the application of elliptical- and round-shaped dowels in a rehabilitation project. Dowel material types included conventional epoxy-coated steel and fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP). This work involved the determination of relative costs in materials to be used in this type of work and performance of FRP and elliptical-shaped steel dowels in the retrofit work. The results indicate good performance from each of the bar configurations and use the results of ride and deflection testing over the research period to project the benefits that can be gained from each configuration vs. the anticipated construction costs. The reader is cautioned that this project could not relate the number of dowels required to the level of anticipated truck traffic for other roads that might be considered.

To provide insight into subgrade non-uniformity and its effects on pavement performance, this study investigated the influence of non-uniform subgrade support on pavement responses (stress and deflection) that affect pavement performance. Several reconstructed PCC pavement projects in Iowa were studied to document and evaluate the influence of subgrade/subbase non-uniformity on pavement performance. In situ field tests were performed at 12 sites to determine the subgrade/subbase engineering properties and develop a database of engineering parameter values for statistical and numerical analysis. Results of stiffness, moisture and density, strength, and soil classification were used to determine the spatial variability of a given property. Natural subgrade soils, fly ash-stabilized subgrade, reclaimed hydrated fly ash subbase, and granular subbase were studied. The influence of the spatial variability of subgrade/subbase on pavement performance was then evaluated by modeling the elastic properties of the pavement and subgrade using the ISLAB2000 finite element analysis program. A major conclusion from this study is that non-uniform subgrade/subbase stiffness increases localized deflections and causes principal stress concentrations in the pavement, which can lead to fatigue cracking and other types of pavement distresses. Field data show that hydrated fly ash, self-cementing fly ash-stabilized subgrade, and granular subbases exhibit lower variability than natural subgrade soils. Pavement life should be increased through the use of more uniform subgrade support. Subgrade/subbase construction in the future should consider uniformity as a key to long-term pavement performance.

The Iowa Department of Transportation (IaDOT) was interested in investigating the use of epoxy adhesive anchorages for the attachment of posts used in the BR27C combination bridge rail system. Alternative anchorage concepts were developed using a modified version of the ACI 318-11 procedures for embedded anchor design. Four design concepts were developed for review by IaDOT, including: (1) a four-bolt square anchorage, (2) a four-bolt spread anchorage, (3) a twobolt centered anchorage, and (4) a two-bolt offset anchorage. IaDOT representatives selected the four-bolt spread anchorage and the two-bolt offset anchorage as the preferred designs for evaluation. In addition to these two proposed configurations, IaDOT also requested that the researchers evaluate a third option that had been previously installed on the US-20 bridge near Hardin, IA. The proposed alternative anchorages and the original cast-in-place anchorage for the BR27C combination bridge rail were evaluated through dynamic component testing. The test of the original cast-in-place anchorage was used a baseline for comparison with the alternative designs. Test no. IBP-1 of the original cast-in-place anchorage developed a peak load of 22.9 kips (101.9 kN) at a deflection of 1.5 in. (38 mm). All three of the tested alternative anchorages provided greater load capacity than the original cast-in-place design and were deemed acceptable surrogates. Of the three alternative designs, the two-bolt offset design was deemed the best option.

Portland cement concrete (PCC) pavement undergoes repeated environmental load-related deflection resulting from temperature and moisture variations across pavement depth. This has been recognized as resulting in PCC pavement curling and warping since the mid-1920s. Slab curvature can be further magnified under repeated traffic loads and may ultimately lead to fatigue failures, including top-down and bottom-up transverse, longitudinal, and corner cracking. It is therefore significant to measure the “true” degree of curling and warping in PCC pavements, not only for quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) purposes, but also for better understanding of its relationship to long-term pavement performance. Although several approaches and devices—including linear variable differential transducers (LVDTs), digital indicators, and some profilers—have been proposed for measuring curling and warping, their application in the field is subject to cost, inconvenience, and complexity of operation. This research therefore explores developing an economical and simple device for measuring curling and warping in concrete pavements with accuracy comparable to or better than existing methodologies. Technical requirements were identified to establish assessment criteria for development, and field tests were conducted to modify the device to further enhancement. The finalized device is about 12 inches in height and 18 pounds in weight, and its manufacturing cost is just $320. Detailed development procedures and evaluation results for the new curling and warping measuring device are presented and discussed, with a focus on achieving reliable curling and warping measurements in a cost effective manner.

Four series of five specimens each were investigated for static and fatigue strength. These four series differed in that there were two variables, the first being the subsidence of concrete around reinforcing bars and the second being shrinkage due to two different curing conditions. The combinations of these variables were then compared to each other by use of, load-deflection curves and S-H fatigue curves.

L?objectif de ce travail de thèse est l?étude des changements conformationels des biomacromolecules à l?échelle d?une molécule unique. Pour cela on a utilisé la Microscopie à Force Atomique (AFM) appliqué à l?étude des protéines et des acides nucléiques déposés sur une surface. Dans ce type de microscopie, une pointe très fine attachée à l?extrémité d?un levier est balayée au dessus d?une surface. L?interaction de la pointe avec la surface de l?échantillon induit la déflection du levier et ce phénomène permet de reconstruire la topographie de l?échantillon. Très importante dans cette technique est la possibilité de travailler en liquide. Cela permet de étudier les biomolécules en conditions quasi-physiologiques sans qu?elles perdent leur activité. On a étudié GroEL, la chaperonin de E.coli, qui est un homo oligomère avec une structure à double anneau qui joue un rôle très important dans le repliement des protéines dénaturées et celles qui viennent d?être synthétisées. En particulier on a focalisé notre attention sur la stabilité mécanique et sur les changements conformationels qui ont lieu pendant l?activité de GroEL. Une analyse détaillée des changements dans la stabilité mécanique et des effets produits par la liaison et l?hydrolyse de l?ATP est présentée dans ce travail. On a montré que le point le plus faible dans la structure de GroEL est l?interface entre les deux anneaux et que l?étape critique dans l?affaiblissement de la structure est l?hydrolyse de l?ATP. En ce qui concerne le changement conformationel, le passage d?une surface hydrophobe à hydrophile, induit par l?hydrolyse de l?ATP, a été montré. Ensuite on a étudié le changement dans la conformation et dans la topologie de l?ADN résultant de l?interaction avec des molécules spécifiques et en réponse à l?exposition des cellules de E.coli à des conditions de stress. Le niveau de surenroulement est un paramètre très sensible, de façon variée, à tous ces facteurs. Les cellules qui ont crus à de températures plus élevées que leur température optimale ont la tendance à diminuer le nombre de surenroulements négatif pour augmenter la stabilité thermique de leur plasmides. L?interaction avec des agents intercalant induit une transition d?un surenroulement négatif à un surenroulement positif d?une façon dépendante de la température. Finalement, l?effet de l?interaction de l?ADN avec des surfaces différentes a été étudié et une application pratique sur les noeuds d?ADN est présentée.<br/><br/>The aim of the present thesis work is to study the conformational changes of biomacromolecules at the single molecule level. To that end, Atomic Force Microcopy (AFM) imaging was performed on proteins and nucleic acids adsorbed onto a surface. In this microcopy technique a very sharp tip attached at the end of a soft cantilever is scanned over a surface, the interaction of the tip with the sample?s surface will induce the deflection of the cantilever and thus it will make possible to reconstruct the topography. A very important feature of AFM is the possibility to operate in liquid, it means with the sample immersed in a buffer solution. This allows one to study biomolecules in quasi-physiological conditions without loosing their activity. We have studied GroEL, the chaperonin of E.coli, which is a double-ring homooligomer which pays a very important role in the refolding of unfolded and newly synthetized polypeptides. In particular we focus our attention on its mechanical stability and on the conformational change that it undergoes during its activity cycle. A detailed analysis of the change in mechanical stability and how it is affected by the binding and hydrolysis of nucleotides is presented. It has been shown that the weak point of the chaperonin complex is the interface between the two rings and that the critical step to weaken the structure is the hydrolysis of ATP. Concerning the conformational change we have directly measured, with a nanometer scale resolution, the switching from a hydrophobic surface to a hydrophilic one taking place inside its cavity induced by the ATP hydrolysis. We have further studied the change in the DNA conformation and topology as a consequence of the interaction with specific DNA-binding molecules and the exposition of the E.coli cells to stress conditions. The level of supercoiling has been shown to be a very sensitive parameter, even if at different extents, to all these factors. Cells grown at temperatures higher than their optimum one tend to decrease the number of the negative superhelical turns in their plasmids in order to increase their thermal stability. The interaction with intercalating molecules induced a transition from positive to negative supercoiling in a temperature dependent way. The effect of the interaction of the DNA with different surfaces has been investigated and a practical application to DNA complex knots is reported.<br/><br/>Observer les objets biologiques en le touchant Schématiquement le Microscope a Force Atomique (AFM) consiste en une pointe très fine fixée a l?extrémité d?un levier Lors de l?imagerie, la pointe de l?AFM gratte la surface de l?échantillon, la topographie de celui-ci induit des déflections du levier qui sont enregistrées au moyen d?un rayon laser réfléchi par le levier. La résolution de l?instrument est fonction entre autre de la dureté, de la rugosité de l?échantillon et de la forme de la pointe. Selon l?échantillon et la pointe utilisée la résolution de l?AFM peut aller de 0.1 A (sur des cristaux) a quelque dizaine de nanomètres (sur des cellules). Cet instrument est particulierment intéressant en biologie en raison de sa capacité à imager des échantillons immergés dans un liquide, c?est à dire dans des conditions quasiphysiologiques. Dans le cadre de ce travail nous avons étudié les changements conformationels de molécules biologiques soumises à des stimulations externes. Nous avons essentielment concentré notre attention sur des complexes protéiques nommé Chaperons Moléculaires et sur des molécules d?ADN circulaire (plasmides). Les Chaperons sont impliqués entre autre dans la résistance des organismes vivants aux stress thermiques et osmotiques. Leur activité consiste essentielment à aider les autres protéines à être bien pliés dans leur conformation finale et, en conséquence, à eviter que ils soient dénaturées et que ils puissent s?agréger. L?ADN, quant à lui est la molécule qui conserve, dans sa séquence, l?information génétique de tous les organismes vivants. Ce travail a spécifiquement concerné l?étude des changements conformationels des chaperonins suit a leur activation par l?ATP. Ces travaux ont montrés a l?échelle de molécule unique la capacité de ces protéines de changer leur surface de hydrophobique a hydrophilique. Nous avons également utilisé l?AFM pour étudier le changement du nombre des surenroulements des molécules d?ADN circulaire lors d?une exposition à un changement de température et de force ionique. Ces travaux ont permis de montrer comment la cellule regle le nombre de surenroulements dans ces molécules pour répondre et contrôler l?expression génétique même dans de conditions extrêmes. Pour les deux molécules en général, c?était très important d?avoir la possibilité de observer leur transitions d?une conformation a l?autre directement a l?échelle d?une seul molécule et, surtout, avec une résolution largement au dessous des la longueur d?onde de la lumière visible que représente le limite pour l?imagerie optique.

RESUME Les follicules des vibrisses des rongeurs sont représentés sous la forme d'une carte topographique dans le cortex à tonneaux. Lorsque un groupe de vibrisses est coupé pendant plusieurs jours chez un rongeur adulte, en laissant les autres vibrisses intactes, le champ réceptif des neurones du cortex à tonneaux est modifié, ce qui démontre que les cartes corticales sont plastiques. Dans notre étude, une expérience sensorielle a été induite chez une souris adulte se comportant librement en stimulant chroniquement une de ses vibrisses pendant 24h. Par une analyse des potentiels de champ locaux, nous démontrons que les caractéristiques spatiotemporelles du flux d'excitation évoqué par la vibrisse principale (VP) dans la colonne corticale correspondante à la vibrisse stimulée n'est pas altéré. Par contre, l'enregistrement des potentiels d'actions d'un total de 1041 neurones à travers le cortex à tonneaux révèlent plusieurs modifications de l'activité neuronale. L'activité spontanée ainsi que la réponse évoquée par la VP sont déprimées dans la colonne corticale stimulée (nombre moyen de potentiels d'action évoqués par la VP diminue de 25 % et 36% dans la couche IV et les couches II&III). La réponse des neurones à la vibrisse stimulée diminue également dans les colonnes corticales adjacentes, «non-stimulées». La dépression de l'activité spontanée et de la réponse à la VP est localisée à la colonne corticale stimulée. Dans le tonneau stimulé, la première partie de la réponse à la VP n'est pas affaiblie, démontrant que la dépression de la réponse n'est pas due à un phénomène de plasticité sous-corticale ou thalamocorticale. La stimulation chronique d'une vibrisse entraîne une augmentation du nombre de synapses GABAergiques dans la couche IV du tonneau correspondant (Knott et al, 2002). Dès lors, nos résultats suggèrent qu'une augmentation de l'inhibition dans le tonneau stimulé serait à l'origine de la diminution des potentiels d'action évoqués par la vibrisse stimulée et en conséquence de l'amplitude du flux d'excitation vers les couches II&III puis vers les colonnes corticales adjacentes. Toutes les réponses des neurones du tonneau stimulé ne sont pas déprimées. Les réponses des neurones à la vibrisse voisine caudale à VP diminuent dans la couche IV (42%) et dans les couches II&III (52%) mais pas les réponses aux 7 autres vibrisses voisines. Les entrées synaptiques en provenance de la vibrisse caudale pourraient avoir été spécifiquement déprimées en raison d'une décorrélation prolongée entre l'activité évoquée dans les chemins sensoriels relatifs à la vibrisse stimulée et à la vibrisse caudale, spécificité qui découlerait du fait que, parmi les vibrisses voisines à la VP, la vibrisse caudale génère les réponses les plus fortes dans la colonne corticale. Quatre jours après l'arrêt de la stimulation, l'activité neuronale n'est plus déprimée; au contraire, nous observons une potentiation des réponses à la VP dans la couche IV de la colonne corticale stimulée. De plus, nous montrons que l'expression des protéines GLT-1 et GLAST, deux transporteurs astrocytaires du glutamate, est augmentée de ~2.5 fois dans la colonne corticale stimulée, indiquant l'existence d'une «plasticité gliale» et suggérant que les cellules gliales participent activement à l'adaptation du cerveau à l'expérience. ABSTRACT In the barrel cortex, mystacial whisker follicles are represented in the form of a topographie map. The selective removal of a set of whiskers while sparing others for several days in an adult rodent alters receptive field of barrel cortex neurons, demonstrating experience-dependent plasticity of cortical maps. Here sensory experience was altered by chronic stimulation of a whisker for a 24h period in a freely behaving adult mouse. By means of an evoked local field potential analysis, we show that chronic stimulation does not alter the flow of excitation evoked by the principal whisker (PW) in the stimulated barrel column. However, the recording of neuronal firing from a total of 1041 single units throughout the barrel cortex reveals several changes in neuronal activity. Immediately after chronic stimulation, spontaneous activity as well as PW-responses are depressed in the stimulated barrel column (mean number of spikes per PW-deflection decreases by 25% and 36% in layer IV and layers II&III, respectively). Neuronal responses towards the chronically stimulated whisker are also significantly depressed in layers II&III of the adjacent "non-stimulated" barrel' columns. The depression of both spontaneous activity and PW-responses are restricted to the stimulated ban-el column. The earliest time epoch of the PW-response in the stimulated barrel is not depressed, demonstrating that the decrease of cortical responses is not due to subcortical or thalamocortical plasticity. The depression of PW-response in the stimulated barrel correlates with an increase in the number of GABAergic synapses in layer IV (Knott et al., 2002). Therefore, our results suggest that an increase in inhibition within the stimulated barrel may reduce its excitatory output and accordingly the flow of excitation towards layers and the subsequent horizontal spread into adjacent barrel columns. Not all responses of neurons in the stimulated barrel are depressed. Neuronal responses towards the caudal in-row whisker decrease by 42% in layer IV and 52% in layers MM but responses to the other 7 immediate surround whiskers (SWs) are not affected. The synaptic inputs from the SW that elicit the strongest responses in the stimulated barrel may have been specifically depressed following a prolonged period of diminished coherence between neuronal activity evoked in the pathways from the chronically stimulated whisker and from its surrounding in-row whisker. Four days after the cessation of the stimulation, depression of neuronal activity is no longer present; on the contrary, we observe a small but significant potentiation of PW-responses in layer IV of the stimulated barrel column. Moreover we show that the expression of astrocytic glutamate transporters GLT-1 and GLAST proteins were both upregulated by ~2.5 fold in the stimulated barrel column, which indicates that glial cells exhibit experience-dependent functional changes and could actively take part in the adaptation of the cerebral cortex to experience.

In order that the radius and thus ununiform structure of the teeth and otherelectrical and magnetic parts of the machine may be taken into consideration the calculation of an axial flux permanent magnet machine is, conventionally, doneby means of 3D FEM-methods. This calculation procedure, however, requires a lotof time and computer recourses. This study proves that also analytical methods can be applied to perform the calculation successfully. The procedure of the analytical calculation can be summarized into following steps: first the magnet is divided into slices, which makes the calculation for each section individually, and then the parts are submitted to calculation of the final results. It is obvious that using this method can save a lot of designing and calculating time. Thecalculation program is designed to model the magnetic and electrical circuits of surface mounted axial flux permanent magnet synchronous machines in such a way, that it takes into account possible magnetic saturation of the iron parts. Theresult of the calculation is the torque of the motor including the vibrations. The motor geometry and the materials and either the torque or pole angle are defined and the motor can be fed with an arbitrary shape and amplitude of three-phase currents. There are no limits for the size and number of the pole pairs nor for many other factors. The calculation steps and the number of different sections of the magnet are selectable, but the calculation time is strongly depending on this. The results are compared to the measurements of real prototypes. The permanent magnet creates part of the flux in the magnetic circuit. The form and amplitude of the flux density in the air-gap depends on the geometry and material of the magnetic circuit, on the length of the air-gap and remanence flux density of the magnet. Slotting is taken into account by using the Carter factor in the slot opening area. The calculation is simple and fast if the shape of the magnetis a square and has no skew in relation to the stator slots. With a more complicated magnet shape the calculation has to be done in several sections. It is clear that according to the increasing number of sections also the result will become more accurate. In a radial flux motor all sections of the magnets create force with a same radius. In the case of an axial flux motor, each radial section creates force with a different radius and the torque is the sum of these. The magnetic circuit of the motor, consisting of the stator iron, rotor iron, air-gap, magnet and the slot, is modelled with a reluctance net, which considers the saturation of the iron. This means, that several iterations, in which the permeability is updated, has to be done in order to get final results. The motor torque is calculated using the instantaneous linkage flux and stator currents. Flux linkage is called the part of the flux that is created by the permanent magnets and the stator currents passing through the coils in stator teeth. The angle between this flux and the phase currents define the torque created by the magnetic circuit. Due to the winding structure of the stator and in order to limit the leakage flux the slot openings of the stator are normally not made of ferromagnetic material even though, in some cases, semimagnetic slot wedges are used. In the slot opening faces the flux enters the iron almost normally (tangentially with respect to the rotor flux) creating tangential forces in the rotor. This phenomenon iscalled cogging. The flux in the slot opening area on the different sides of theopening and in the different slot openings is not equal and so these forces do not compensate each other. In the calculation it is assumed that the flux entering the left side of the opening is the component left from the geometrical centre of the slot. This torque component together with the torque component calculated using the Lorenz force make the total torque of the motor. It is easy to assume that when all the magnet edges, where the derivative component of the magnet flux density is at its highest, enter the slot openings at the same time, this will have as a result a considerable cogging torque. To reduce the cogging torquethe magnet edges can be shaped so that they are not parallel to the stator slots, which is the common way to solve the problem. In doing so, the edge may be spread along the whole slot pitch and thus also the high derivative component willbe spread to occur equally along the rotation. Besides forming the magnets theymay also be placed somewhat asymmetric on the rotor surface. The asymmetric distribution can be made in many different ways. All the magnets may have a different deflection of the symmetrical centre point or they can be for example shiftedin pairs. There are some factors that limit the deflection. The first is that the magnets cannot overlap. The magnet shape and the relative width compared to the pole define the deflection in this case. The other factor is that a shifting of the poles limits the maximum torque of the motor. If the edges of adjacent magnets are very close to each other the leakage flux from one pole to the other increases reducing thus the air-gap magnetization. The asymmetric model needs some assumptions and simplifications in order to limit the size of the model and calculation time. The reluctance net is made for symmetric distribution. If the magnets are distributed asymmetrically the flux in the different pole pairs will not be exactly the same. Therefore, the assumption that the flux flows from the edges of the model to the next pole pairs, in the calculation model from one edgeto the other, is not correct. If it were wished for that this fact should be considered in multi-pole pair machines, this would mean that all the poles, in other words the whole machine, should be modelled in reluctance net. The error resulting from this wrong assumption is, nevertheless, irrelevant.

Shading treatments of 50% of the incident radiation were applied to the semidwarf wheat cultivar Leones INTA before and after anthesis in two field experiments in Argentina in 1987 and 1988. The treatments reduced biological (above-ground dry matter) yield, grain yield and number of grains/m2. Number of grains/m2 was closely and linearly correlated with ear dry weight at anthesis and with the photothermal quotient, calculated from 20 days before to 10 days after anthesis. Grain yield was sink limited, and the shading treatments reduced sink strength. The contribution of preanthesis assimilates to grain yield was smaller in the shaded crops than in the unshaded controls; in unshaded crops, almost 40% of grain yield was contributed by preanthesis assimilates whilst in preanthesis shaded crops this contribution was negligible. The proportion of preanthesis assimilates contributed to the grain was closely related to the decrease in stem dry weight during grain filling. The effects of shading on main stems and tillers were the same.

Työn tavoitteena oli kehittää nopeasti konvergoiva kuorielementti epälineaarisesti joustavien kappaleiden analysointiin. Kuorielementti perustuu absoluuttisten solmukoordinaattien menetelmään ja se hyödyntää kaarevuuden kuvausta elastisten voimien määrityksessä. Kehitettyä elementtiä verrattiin kontinuumimekaniikalla kehitettyyn kuorielementtiin ja kaupallisen elementtimenetelmän kuorielementtiin. Yksinkertaisimman kuormitustapauksen tuloksia verrattiin teknisen taivutusteorian mukaiseen analyyttiseen ratkaisuun. Staattisten testien tulokset tässä työssä kehitetyllä kuorielementillä vastasivat hyvin kaupallisella elementtimenetelmällä saatuja tuloksia. Deformaatioiden ollessa geometrisesti lineaarisella alueella, kehitetyllä kuorielementillä saadut tulokset vastasivat paremmin sekä analyyttistä ratkaisua että kaupallisella elementtimenetelmällä saatuja tuloksia kuin aiemman kontinuumimekaniikkaan perustuvan kuorielementin tulokset. Kehitetyn kuorielementin ongelmana verrattuna kontinuumimekaniikkaan perustuvaan elementtiin on monimutkaisempi kinematiikan kuvaus. Tästä on seurauksena laskenta-ajan huomattava kasvaminen. Jatkossa kannattaisi keskittyä numeeristen ratkaisumenetelmien kehittämiseen.
