The variation of the interdiffusion coefficient with the change in composition in the Nb-Mo system is determined in the temperature range of 1800 °C to 1900 °C. It was found that the activation energy has a minimum at around 45 at. pct Nb. The values of the pre-exponential factor and the activation energy for diffusion are compared with the data available in the literature. Further, the impurity diffusion coefficients of Nb in Mo and Mo in Nb are calculated.

Al-4.4 a/oZn and Al-4.4 a/oZn with Ag, Ce, Dy, Li, Nb, Pt, Y, or Yb, alloys have been investigated by resistometry with a view to study the solute-vacancy interactions and clustering kinetics in these alloys. Solute-vacancy binding energies have been evaluated for all these elements by making use of appropriate methods of evaluation. Ag and Dy additions yield some interesting results and these have been discussed in the thesis. Solute-vacancy binding energy values obtained here have been compared with other available values and discussed. A study of the type of interaction between vacancies and solute atoms indicates that the valency effect is more predominant than the elastic effect.

Nonconventional heptacoordination in combination with efficient magnetic exchange coupling is shown to yield a 1-D heteronuclear {(FeNbIV)-Nb-II} compound with remarkable magnetic features when compared to other Fe(II)-based single chain magnets (SCM). Cyano-bridged heterometallic {3d-4d} and {3d-5d} chains are formed upon assembling Fe(II) bearing a pentadentate macrocycle as the blocking ligand with octacyano metallates, [M(CN)(8)](4-) (M = Nb-IV, Mo-IV, W-IV.) X-ray diffraction (single-crystal and powder) measurements reveal that the [{(H2O)Fe(L-1)}{M(CN)(8)}{Fe(L-1)}](infinity) architectures consist of isomorphous 1-D polymeric structures based on the alternation of {Fe(L-1)}(2+) and {M(CN)(8)}(4-) units (L-1 stands for the pentadentate macrocycle). Analysis of the magnetic susceptibility behavior revealed cyano-bridged {Fe-Nb} exchange interaction to be antiferromagnetic with J = -20 cm(-1) deduced from fitting an Ising model taking into account the noncollinear spin arrangement. For this ferrimagnetic chain a slow relaxation of its magnetization is observed at low temperature revealing a SCM behavior with Delta/k(B) = 74 K and tau(0) = 4.6 x 10(-11) s. The M versus H behavior exhibits a hysteresis loop with a coercive field of 4 kOe at 1 K and reveals at 380 mK magnetic avalanche processes, i.e., abrupt reversals in magnetization as H is varied. The origin of these characteristics is attributed to the combination of efficient {Fe-Nb} exchange interaction and significant anisotropy of the {Fe(L-1)) unit. High field EPR and magnetization experiments have revealed for the parent compound [Fe(L-1)(H2O)(2)]Cl-2 a negative zero field splitting parameter of D approximate to -17 cm(-1). The crystal structure, magnetic behavior, and Mossbauer data for [Fe(L-1)(H2O)(2)]Cl-2 are also reported.

Nb3Sn growth following the bronze technique, (i.e. by interdiffusion between Cu(Sn) alloy (bronze) and Nb) is one of the important methodologies to produce this superconductor. In this study, we have addressed the confusion over the growth rate of the Nb3Sn phase. Furthermore, a possible explanation for the corrugated layer in the multifilamentary structure is discussed. Kirkendall marker experiments were conducted to study the relative mobilities of the species, which also explained the reason for finding pores in the product phase layer. The diffusion characteristics of the Fe-Nb system were investigated using the diffusion couple technique. The average interdiffusion coefficient was calculated for the Fe2Nb Laves and the FeNb mu phases.The possible diffusion mechanism was predicted by using the calculated values of the activation energy for diffusion. Kirkendall marker experiments were conducted to determine the relative mobilities of the species. Fe was found to have a faster diffusion rate than Nb in both phases.

An optical investigation of the high-temperature structural phase transition in gel-grown single crystals of CslO4 is reported. This crystal undergoes a phase transition from the room-temperature orthorhombic phase of symmetry Pnma to a tetragonal phase at 150°C. The birefringence Δn = |na-nb| falls abruptly at Tc, indicating the first-order nature of the phase transition. Microscopic examination has revealed the existence of ferroelastic domains in the crystal. The domain structure and its dependence on temperature was studied in detail. The experimental results suggest that this crystal can be assigned to the ferroelastic Aizu species 4/mmmFmmm (p).

New protonated layered oxides, HMWO6·1.5H2O (M=Nb or Ta), have been synthesized by topotactic exchange of lithium in trirutile LiMWO6 with protons by treatment with dilute HNO3. The tetragonal cell constants are a=4.71 (2) and c=25.70 (8)Å for HNbWO6·1.5H2O and a=4.70 (2) and c=25.75 (9) Å for HTaWO6·1.5H2O. Partially hydrated compounds, HMWO6·0.5H2O and anhydrous compounds, HMWO6 retain the layered structure. The structure of these oxides consists of MWO6 sheets built up of M/W-oxygen octahedra with rutile type corner- and edge-sharing. Interlayer protons in HMWO6 are exchanged with Li+, Na+, K+ and Tl+. HMWO6 exhibit Brønsted acidity intercalating n-alkylamines and pyridine.

Tiivistelmä – Referat – Abstract Anorexi ses i Finland som en psykisk sjukdom med en psykopatologi, som bland andra innefattar rädsla för att bli fet. I min undersökning har jag fått fram tre huvudteman, som förutom andra bakomliggande omständigheter, bidragit till ett insjuknande. De handlar om anorexi som livsstil, bantning och viljan att leva sunt och äta rätt. Med den vaknande sexualiteten väcks intresset för det andra könet och för kroppens utseende i övrigt. I bakgrunden finns känslor av bl.a. ensamhet, ett sökande efter den egna personligheten, ångest och depression. Jag har byggt min studie på patienternas egna berättelser om sitt liv. Perspektivet är samhällsinriktat, och som analysmetod har jag använt mig av narrativet. Jag har lånat idéer både från Vilma Hänninens (1999), Gerhard Riemann och Fritz Schützes (1991) narrativa modeller, och rör mig mellan dem båda. Jag har i första hand intresserat mig för tiden före insjuknandet och de bakomliggande orsaker, som kan tänkas befrämja insjuknandet. Jag har speglat anorektikernas problematik i bl.a. Anthony Giddens (1997) och Zygmund Baumans (1999) teorier om det postmoderna samhället, och ser ätstörningar som en uttrycksform för dåligt befinnande. Samhällsklimatet har blivit hårdare och omsorgen om personer i omgivningen har glömts bort. Vi lever, enligt Giddens (1997), i en skenande värld, viket betyder att förändringarna påverkar existerande beteendemönster i större omfattning och på ett djupare plan än tidigare. Enligt Pennanen (2000) är målsättningen för ätstörningspatienter stressande, svåruppnådd och svårkontrollerbar. Mina informanter berättar om höga målsättningar, prestationskrav, dålig självkänsla och skam över sina kroppar. För att tillfriskna behövs stöd. Men det vikigaste är att personen själv vill bli frisk, och själv ta ansvar för sitt tillfrisknande. Sjukdomen är individuell. The microstructural evolution on aging a Co-3 wt pct Ti-2 wt pct Nb alloy has been followed by transmission electron microscopy and diffraction to show that the solid solution decomposed by the spinodal mode. The strengthening observed has been correlated with the differences in lattice parameters of the coexisting phases. It has been suggested that materials with interesting and useful bulk non-linear optical properties might result by substituting vanadium, the lightest element in the group V of periodic table, for Nb or Ta atoms along with Li and three oxygens. It is with this motivation that we have been making attempts to grow single crystals of LiNbO3 doped with various concentrations of V2O5. Unfortunately the results obtained on the ceramic samples of this material have not been very encouraging, owing to their hygroscopic nature. However, our attempts to prepare both ceramic and single-crystalline samples of potassium lithium niobate (K3Li2Nb5O15; KLN) doped V2O5 were successful. In this letter we report the preliminary results concerning our studies on the effect of V2O5 doping on the structural as well as topographic features of both ceramic and single-crystalline samples of KLN.

The nonlinear current voltage characteristics of a point contact convey information about various excitations in the metal. We have made a poin~ contact study on a superconductor to see the band gap and on a normal metal to see Ihe transport characteristics.

The dielectric response of pulsed laser ablated Bi-1 Zn-5(1) Nb-0(1) O-5(7) (BZN) thin films are investigated within the temperature range of 300-660 K and frequency range of 100 Hz-100 kHz Thin film exhibited a strong dielectric relaxation behavior A sharp rise in dielectric constant of BZN thin film at high temperatures is related to disorder in canon and anion lattices Observed dielectric relaxation implies a redistribution of charges within the unit cell This phenomenon suggests that the large change in dielectric constant is due to a dynamical rise of dipolar fluctuations in the unit cell XPS spectra of BZN (A(2)B(2)O(6)O') cubic pyrochlore confirm that the relaxation corresponds to the ionic hopping among the A and O' positions of several local potential minima Barrier height for hopping is distributed between 0 and 0 94 eV The O is spectrum confirms presence of two types of oxygen in BZN thin film The disorder in charge neutralized thin film is correlated with XPS spectra (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved
