Choice of an appropriate branding strategy is a critical determinant of new product success. Prior work on fast-moving-consumer-goods (FMCG) prescribes that new products carry new (vs. existing) brand names to appeal to earlier adopters - a critical target for new products. However, such a prescription may not be prudent for high-technology (HT) products, as they often involve considerably more consumer perceived risk than FMCG. By drawing on Dowling and Staelin's (1994) framework of perceived-risk handling, we propose that both earlier and later adopters will favor existing brands to cope with the elevated risk associated with an innovative HT product. Two studies - one conducted in an experimental setting and the other in a field setting - support the proposition that both earlier and later adopters respond more favorably to existing (vs. new) brands on innovative HT products.

O presente trabalho situa a investigação em torno do marketing, particularmente do branding, territorial numa perspectiva holística e consubstanciadora de comportamentos, identidade e desenvolvimento territorial. Nesse âmbito, focaliza-se na problemática da amplitude e heterogeneidade de actores com capacidade de impacte na construção e transmissão da marca territorial e na necessidade da sua contemplação nos pressupostos de branding para a sustentação efectiva das marcas territoriais. A tese defendida advoga a relevância de empreender marcas territoriais assentes na colaboração e integração dos stakeholders no processo construtivo, de forma a potenciar a relação directa entre o branding, a identidade e comportamento territorial e aumentar o output da marca. Nesse sentido, essa orientação é consubstanciada sob a edificação conceptual de Stakeholders Based Branding e procede-se à exploração e aferição de contributos para o seu desenvolvimento e modelização. Empiricamente e tendo por base uma abordagem descritiva e exploratória, a investigação orienta-se a um trabalho de natureza qualitativa e interpretativa que estuda, neste âmbito e através da metodologia de Grounded Theory, 6 casos de estudo de municípios portugueses, através de 48 entrevistas em profundidade realizadas a líderes políticos e stakeholders territoriais e dados secundários. Os resultados obtidos em campo demonstram a relação entre a integração de stakeholders e o sentimento de branding e imagem territorial, reiterando que quanto mais envolvidos os stakeholders se sentem no processo construtivo da marca territorial, mais tendem a assumir a sua auto-imputação e que os territórios com posturas mais colaborativas na construção de branding são os que tendem a possuir auto-imagens e imagens públicas mais positivas. Paralelamente permitem aferir um conjunto de factores impulsores, implementados e/ou idealizados, tidos como relevantes para promover uma orientação de Stakeholders Based Branding, nos respectivos territórios. Do percurso investigativo emana um constructo de Stakeholders Based Branding, com carácter indutivo, respeitando os pressupostos da Grounded Theory e assente na modelização e constituição de proposições teóricas que visam contribuir para orientar a construção de marcas territoriais alicerçadas na integração e colaboração de stakeholders.

This research aims, through performance, fashion photography, video making and the theatrical devices that accompany such practice, to explore the style of a contemporary, largely male, subcultural collective. The common term that joins these loosely bound groups is revival as they appear driven by an impulse to simulate and re-enact the dress, rites and rituals of British and American subcultures from a perceived golden era. The similarities with re-enactment societies are also explored and exploited to the end of developing new style- based aesthetics in male fashion image-making formed around an elaborate re- enactment of Spartacus and the Third Servile Wars. Examined through comparative visuals (revivalists / re-enactors) a common thread is found in the wearing of leather as a metaphor for resistance, style and a pupa-like second skin. Subsequent findings of this research suggest that the cuirass of popular culture emerges as the motorcycle jacket of both the sword and sandal epic and the historical re-enactor. Addressing extremes in narcissistic dress and behaviour amongst certain individuals within these older male communities, this study also questions parts of established theory on subcultural development within the field of cultural studies and postulates on a metaphorical dandy gene. Citing two leading practitioners in the field of fashion photography the work of both Richard Prince and Bruce Weber is viewed through the lens of the subcultural aesthete and conclusions drawn as to their role as agents provocateurs in the development of the fashion image with a revival based narrative. In addition the often used term retro is examined, categorised and granted its own genre within fashion image- making and defined as being separate from the practice element of this research. Reflecting a multi-disciplinary approach that engages the researcher as Bricoleur and participant observer this research operates in the reflexive realm and uses simulation as a key method of enquiry. The practice-led outcome of this investigation takes the form of a final research exhibition that takes the form of a substantial installation of photography, video, clothing and textile prints. The use of spices, common nowadays, was once a sign of high position, luxury and wealth. The value of food ingredients is thus determined by the time in which one lives, that is, it is a product of fashion, since they are always used in a social context. Many plants used as spices enjoyed fame and undeniable importance in the past but their reign was more or less ephemeral, as they were rejected in favour of others for food seasoning, or simply upstaged and/or used for other purposes.

O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar a importância dos stakeholders, particularmente, o caso dos comerciantes locais, que correspondem à recente reformulação da “marca” Porto, enquanto cidade, que resultou na nova imagem “Porto.”, implementada em Setembro de 2014. Visto ser um tema recente, recorreu-se à revisão de literatura para verificar se existe ou não importância na integração desta população, através de um processo de branding conjunto, em parceria com quem na prática empreende a marca. Seguiu-se uma análise mais objetiva, onde se selecionou uma amostra por conveniência, sobre o critério de acessibilidade e ainda realizando um convite para entrevista, junto da organização responsável pelo desenvolvimento da marca, que impremeditávelmente foi declinado. Contudo, prosseguiu-se com o apropositado ingrediente da matéria em pesquisa, que talvez possa responder à desconformidade da organização em prestar esclarecimento. Deste modo, do elemento a ser investigado identificam-se quarenta e um negócios, de diferentes segmentos de mercado (alojamentos turísticos, restauração, garrafeiras e lojas de artesanato local), com uma média de cinco funcionários cada e localizadas na zona histórica da cidade do Porto. Em colaboração com os mesmos, foi produzido um questionário pessoal com os proprietários de cada organização investigada. Daqui resultou o nível de familiaridade, motivações e desejos, assim como nível de envolvimento, aproveitamento e aplicação destes stakeholders, imprenscindíveis à marca. Descobrindo-se que independentemente da consciência sobre a existência de uma marca e de um bom nível de reconhecimento, após o seu lançamento, isto não se correlaciona com o comprometimento disponibilizado por parte de quem a gere, nomeadamente comunicação direcionada para os stakeholders locais. Verificando-se uma incongruência quanto ao empreendimento do conceito de branding colaborativo, identificado na literatura e ao qual se atribuí uma aplicabilidade proveitosa.

Zara was founded in 1975 by Amancio Ortega Gaona, soon becoming the largest and most successful chain of the Galician group Inditex (Industria de Diseño Textil) and a pioneer of the rising fashion category of Fast Fashion. Its innovative vertically-integrated strategies, combined with its emphasis on quality and demand-based offer have shaped the world of fashion and brought forth many questions on its future sustainability and growth. Zara has always relied on its store network for advertising its product offer; allowing its garments to “speak for themselves”. With the continued pressure felt in the industry, management has pressed some concerns about future company growth and creative, innovating solutions must be implemented to guarantee Zara’s future growth. The case-study narrative focuses on these issues and leaves readers with an open question regarding what decision to implement.

Traditional approaches to evaluate performance in hotels, have mainly used financial measures. Building on Speckbacher et al. (2003), this Work Project aims to design and propose a Balanced Scorecard Type II as a performance measurement/management system for the hospitality industry based on data collected at the Luxury Brand Hotels of Pestana Group. The main contribution is to better align the vision, strategy and financial and non-financial performance measures in this category of hotels, in particular those of Pestana Group, and by doing so, lead their managers to focus on what is really critical and, consequently improve the overall performance.

Creativity is important to the growth and development of society, to educational institutions, and to the personal growth of individuals. Students who are aware of their creativity are assumed to have innovative ideas and fresh insights. Limited research has been conducted to see if students can identify their own creative abilities. In this study, I explored the students' perceptions and experiences in a fashion design course. This study documented the creative journey from the concept stage of an apparel collection to the final product. Participants were asked to reflect and document their creative moments, describe a creative process, and identify a creative environment. The participants were students who were enrolled in a fashion design course and were asked to participate in this study because they experienced all stages of the design process. Data were collected through personal reflection surveys, focus groups, and personal interviews. Themes of creative moments that emerged from this study were experiences that the participants had as they proceeded through the stages of the fashion design process. All of the participants identified a creative process, but the stages varied for each participant The participants identified themes related to promoting creativity in an environment, including the atmosphere, creative people, teachers, reflection, student needs, and assignments. The participants identified potential barriers in an environment, including rules and guidelines, teachers, the classroom, deadlines and time, feedback, and other important issues. The results ofthis study suggest that there needs to be a better understanding of creativity and greater support and encouragement for creativity in the classroom. Instructors need to support environments that are conducive to creative development and lead to effective learning for students. Students need to learn how to enhance their creativity as well as understand the barriers that block their creative development.
