BACKGROUND: Reducing the complexity of major depressive disorder by symptom-based subtypes constitutes the basis of more specific treatments. To date, few studies have empirically derived symptom subtypes separated by sex, although the impact of sex has been widely accepted in depression research. METHODS: The community-based sample included 373 males and 443 females from the Zurich Program for Sustainable Development of Mental Health Services (ZInEP) manifesting depressive symptoms in the past 12 months. Latent Class Analysis (LCA) was performed separately by sex to extract sex-related depression subtypes. The subtypes were characterized by psychosocial characteristics. RESULTS: Three similar subtypes were found in both sexes: a severe typical subtype (males: 22.8%; females: 35.7%), a severe atypical subtype (males: 17.4%; females: 22.6%), and a moderate subtype (males: 25.2%; females: 41.8%). In males, two additional subgroups were identified: a severe irritable/angry-rejection sensitive (IARS) subtype (30%) comprising the largest group, and a small psychomotor retarded subtype (4%). Males belonging to the severe typical subtype exhibited the lowest masculine gender role orientation, while females of the typical subtype showed more anxiety disorders. The severe atypical subtype was associated with eating disorders in both sexes and with alcohol/drug abuse/dependence in females. In contrast, alcohol/drug abuse/dependence was associated with the severe IARS subtype in males. LIMITATIONS:The study had a cross-sectional design, allowing for no causal inferences. CONCLUSIONS:This study contributes to a better understanding of sex-related depression subtypes, which can be well distinguished on the basis of symptom profiles. This provides the base for future research investigating the etiopathogenesis and effective treatment of the heterogeneous depression disorder.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING THE STUDY: Racetrack injuries are of welfare concern and prevention of injuries is an important goal in many racing jurisdictions. Over the years this has led to more detailed recording of clinical events on racecourses. However, risk factor analyses of clinical events at race meetings have never been reported for Switzerland OBJECTIVE: To identify discipline-specific factors that influence the occurrence of clinical events during race meetings with the ultimate aim to improve the monitoring and safety on racetracks in Switzerland and optimise racehorse welfare. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study of horse race data collected by the Swiss horse racing association. METHODS: All race starts (n = 17,670, including 6,198 flat, 1,257 obstacle and 10,215 trot race starts) recorded over a period of four years (2009-2012) were analysed in multivariable mixed effect logistic regression models including horse and racecourse related data. The models were designed to identify discipline specific factors influencing the occurrence of clinical events on racecourses in Switzerland. RESULTS: Factors influencing the risk of clinical events during races were different for each discipline. The risk of a clinical event in trot racing was lower for racing on a Porphyre-sand track than on grass tracks. Horses whose driver was also their trainer had an approximately two times higher risk for clinical events. In obstacle races, longer distances (2401-3300 m and 3301-5400 m respectively) had a protective effect compared to racing over shorter distances. In flat racing, five racecourses reported significantly less clinical events. In all three disciplines, finishing 8th place or later was associated with clinical events. CONCLUSIONS: Changes in management that aim to improve the safety and welfare of racehorses, such as racetrack adaptations, need to be individualised for each discipline.

The goal of this work has been to calibrate sensitivities and fragmentation pattern of various molecules as well as further characterize the lab model of the ROSINA Double Focusing Mass Spectrometer (DFMS) on board ESA’s Rosetta spacecraft bound to comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. The detailed calibration and characterization of the instrument is key to understand and interpret the results in the coma of the comet. A static calibration was performed for the following species: Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, H2O, N2, CO2, CH4, C2H6, C3H8, C4H10, and C2H4. The purpose of the calibration was to obtain sensitivities for all detectors and emissions, the fragmentation behavior of the ion source and to show the capabilities to measure isotopic ratios at the comet. The calibration included the recording of different correction factors to evaluate the data, including a detailed investigation of the detector gain. The quality of the calibration that could be tested for different gas mixtures including the calibration of the density inside the ion source when calibration gas from the gas calibration unit is introduced. In conclusion the calibration shows that DFMS meets the design requirements and that DFMS will be able to measure the D/H at the comet and help shed more light on the puzzle about the origin of water on Earth.

In this work, electrophoretic preconcentration of protein and peptide samples in microchannels was studied theoretically using the 1D dynamic simulator GENTRANS, and experimentally combined with MS. In all configurations studied, the sample was uniformly distributed throughout the channel before power application, and driving electrodes were used as microchannel ends. In the first part, previously obtained experimental results from carrier-free systems are compared to simulation results, and the effects of atmospheric carbon dioxide and impurities in the sample solution are examined. Simulation provided insight into the dynamics of the transport of all components under the applied electric field and revealed the formation of a pure water zone in the channel center. In the second part, the use of an IEF procedure with simple well defined amphoteric carrier components, i.e. amino acids, for concentration and fractionation of peptides was investigated. By performing simulations a qualitative description of the analyte behavior in this system was obtained. Neurotensin and [Glu1]-Fibrinopeptide B were separated by IEF in microchannels featuring a liquid lid for simple sample handling and placement of the driving electrodes. Component distributions in the channel were detected using MALDI- and nano-ESI-MS and data were in agreement with those obtained by simulation. Dynamic simulations are demonstrated to represent an effective tool to investigate the electrophoretic behavior of all components in the microchannel.

Steroid binding proteins are an obvious choice in the search for genetic factors in plasma that might predispose to upper body obesity, a risk factor for non-insulin dependent diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The two steroid binding proteins studied by isoelectric focusing were sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), the transport protein for sex hormones and corticosteroid binding globulin (CBG), the transport protein for corticosteroids. Auto-radiography and immunoblotting on polyacrylamide gels were used to detect polymorphism in SHBG. Immunoblotting on agarose gels was used to visualize corticosteroid binding globulin. SHBG showed similar structural variation in American Caucasians, American Blacks and Canadian Indians. Two alleles (1, 2) were hypothesized with highly polymorphic frequencies in all three ethnic groups. CBG was not found to be polymorphic, but two variants were found in Caucasian male twins and in a Black individual. The finding of a good assay and a polymorphic system for SHBG are the first steps for additional studies into disease associations. ^

The tuna stomach database from AZTI-Tecnalia corresponds to 7 years of sampling from 2004 to 2011. Due to the absence of continuity in the different projects dealing with the feeding ecology of tunas, the sampling could not be performed every year for both species, and no sample was collected in 2008. However, the fish stomach content record contents composition - by prey weight - of 1525 albacore caught in the Bay of Biscay and surrounding waters of the North Atlantic Drift Region in 2005 (n=397), 2006 (n=196), 2007 (n=37), 2009 (n=95), 2010 (n=566) and 2011 (n=234) ; and of 686 bluefin tunas caught in the Southeastern Bay of Biscay in 2004 (n=32), 2005 (n=36), 2006 (n=3), 2009 (n=257), 2010 (n=233) and 2011 (n=125). Samples have been obtained from scientific research surveys (using a variety of different fishing gears), from commercial fisheries catches, from individual fish voluntarily sampled by recreational fishermen and from fish accidentally stranded on coastlines. Each predator is identified by an ID and its length and wet weight are given. In case the wet weight could not be measured, it was estimated through a length-weight relationship equation and is indicated in the comment for the Predator mass column. The total weight of each prey is given, as well as the weight of each prey taxonomic group in each stomach.

The coastal upwelling system off the coast of Peru is characterized by high biological activity and a pronounced subsurface oxygen minimum zone, as well as associated emissions of atmospheric trace gases such as N2O, CH4 and CO2. From 3 to 23 December 2012, R/V Meteor (M91) cruise took place in the Peruvian upwelling system between 4.59 and 15.4°S, and 82.0 to 77.5°W. During M91 we investigated the composition of the sea-surface microlayer (SML), the oceanic uppermost boundary directly subject to high solar radiation, often enriched in specific organic compounds of biological origin like chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and marine gels. In the SML, the continuous photochemical and microbial recycling of organic matter may strongly influence gas exchange between marine systems and the atmosphere. We analyzed SML and underlying water (ULW) samples at 38 stations focusing on CDOM spectral characteristics as indicator of photochemical and microbial alteration processes. CDOM composition was characterized by spectral slope (S) values and excitation-emission matrix fluorescence (EEMs), which allow us to track changes in molecular weight (MW) of DOM, and to determine potential DOM sources and sinks. Spectral slope S varied between 0.012 to 0.043 1 nm-1 and was quite similar between SML and ULW, with no significant differences between the two compartments. Higher S values were observed in the ULW of the southern stations below 15°S. By EEMs, we identified five fluorescent components (F1-5) of the CDOM pool, of which two had excitation/emission characteristics of amino-acid-like fluorophores (F1, F4) and were highly enriched in the SML, with a median ratio SML : ULW of 1.5 for both fluorophores. In the study region, values for CDOM absorption ranged from 0.07 to 1.47 m-1. CDOM was generally highly concentrated in the SML, with a median enrichment with respect to the ULW of 1.2. CDOM composition and changes in spectral slope properties suggested a local microbial release of DOM directly in the SML as a response to light exposure in this extreme environment. In a conceptual model of the sources and modifications of optically active DOM in the SML and underlying seawater (ULW), we describe processes we think may take place (Fig. 1); the production of CDOM of higher MW by microbial release through growth, exudation and lysis in the euphotic zone, includes the identified fluorophores (F1, F2, F3, F4, F5). Specific amino-acid-like fluorophores (F1, F4) accumulate in the SML with respect to the ULW, as photochemistry may enhance microbial CDOM release by (a) photoprotection mechanisms and (b) cell-lysis processes. Microbial and photochemical degradation are potential sinks of the amino-acid-like fluorophores (F1, F4), and potential sources of reworked and more refractory humic-like components (F2, F3, F5). In the highly productive upwelling region along the Peruvian coast, the interplay of microbial and photochemical processes controls the enrichment of amino-acid-like CDOM in the SML. We discuss potential implications for air-sea gas exchange in this area.

The North-South Economic Corridor (NSEC), the road between Bangkok and Kunming, China, including the Laos route (R3B) and the Myanmar route (R3B), has been developed since 1998 following the GMS program. The region covering Yunnan Province in China, Shan State in Myanmar, Northern Laos and Northern Thailand has historical and ethnic closeness, and is a comparatively poor mountainous, boundary area. In the wake of the development of the NSEC, however, the region has started to show signs of change. Consequently, a review is to be carried out concerning the movement of people and cars, border trade and the situation concerning the progress of border economic zones at the five nodal border points in the four countries, and over three routes: R3A, R3B, and the Mekong River route.

The efficiency of a Laue lens for X and Gamma ray focusing in the energy range 60 ÷ 600 keV is closely linked to the diffraction efficiency of the single crystals composing the lens. A powerful focusing system is crucial for applications like medical imaging and X ray astronomy where wide beams must be focused. Mosaic crystals with a high density, such as Cu or Au, and bent crystals with curved diffracting planes (CDP) are considered for the realization of a focusing system for X rays, owing to their high diffraction efficiency. In this work, a comparison of the efficiency of CDP crystals and mosaic crystals was performed on the basis of the theory of X-ray diffraction. Si, GaAs and Ge CDP crystals with optimized thicknesses and moderate radii of curvature of several tens of metres demonstrate comparable or superior performance with respect to the higher atomic number mosaic crystals generally used. A simplified approach for calculating the integrated reflectivity of the crystals is applied. A bending technique used during this work to realize CDP crystals consists in a controlled surface damaging induced by a mechanical lapping process. A compressive strained layer of few micrometres in thickness is generated and causes the convex curvature of the damaged side of the crystal. Another new bending technique is developed and the main results are shown. The process consists on a film deposition of a selected bi-component epoxy resin on one side of crystal, made uniform in thickness by mean of a spin-coater. Choosing the speed of spin-coating, so changing the thickness of the film, a control of radius of curvature can be obtained. Moreover the possibility to combine the two bending technique to obtain CDP crystal with a stronger curvature in rather thick crystals was demonstrated. Detailed characterization of Si, and GaAs CDP crystals at low and high x-ray energies are performed on flat and bent crystals obtained with the damaging and the resin deposition technique. As expected an increase of diffraction efficiency in asymmetrical diffraction geometry in CDP crystals with respect to the flat ones is observed. On the other hand an unexpected increase of the integrated intensity in symmetrical geometry, not predicted by the theory, is observed in all the measurements performed with different set up. The experimental trend of the integrated reflectivity as a function of the radius of curvature is in a good agreement with that predicted by the theory of bent perfect crystals, so it is possible to conclude that the surface damage has a limited effect on the crystal reflectivity. A study of the integrated reflectivity in the energy range of interest (100÷350 keV) in CDP crystals realized with damaging and resin deposition technique at symmetrical and asymmetrical geometries was performed at ILL Institute. Also at these energies the diffraction efficiency of bent crystals was much larger (a 12 time increase is observed for bent crystals in asymmetrical 111 geometry) than that measured in flat crystals. The diffraction efficiency of CDP crystals realized with both techniques tends to coincide with that of flat crystals at very high energies (> 200 keV). This suggesting that also real flat perfect crystals can be considered as strongly bent or mosaic crystals at very high X ray energies.
