Introduction: Parkinson’s disease is a chronic disease of the nervous system that leads to a clinical picture of resting tremor, bradykinesia, muscular rigidity and postural instability. These symptoms, in turn, directly influence the functional independence of the individual. Objective: To analyze the influence of muscle strengthening on functional independence of individuals with Parkinson’s disease. Method: A total of ten subjects of both genders participated in this study. We evaluated the functional independence, strength of lower limbs, grip strength testing and 1 repetition maximum. After the evaluation was performed muscle building program for 12 weeks. Results: There was improvement of functional independence (p = 0.007) and lower limb strength (p = 0.01), as well as an increase in grip strength, both of the dominant hand (p = 0.007) and the non-dominant one (p = 0.02). Conclusion: The muscle strength improved the functional independence of individuals with PD.

Introduction: Some losses resulting from aging can be minimized with the practice of resistive exercises. Objective: To analyze the effects of resistive exercises on flexibility, mobility, muscle strength and balance in the elderly. Method: Twenty elderly individuals were divided between an activity group (AG, n=10; 66.1±6.35 years) and a control group (CG, n=10; 65.4±7.54 years). Mobility, flexibility, muscle strength and balance were evaluated. The AG participated in the training for 13 weeks (one-hour sessions, twice a week). The Wilcoxon non-parametric test (intra-group analysis) was used to analyze the data. A significance level of 5% (p<0.05) was adopted. Results: After training, the AG presented better mobility, lower limb muscle strength, and balance, but no difference in flexibility. Conclusion: The present study allows us to conclude that resistive exercises were able to improve mobility, lower limb muscle strength and balance in elderly individuals.

The six-minute walking test can be affected by several variables, among them, the respiratory and peripheral muscle strength. The objective of this study was to correlate the respiratory muscle strength (maximum inspiratory pressure – MIP; and maximum expiratory pressure – MEP) and the hand grip test (HGT)with the six minute walking test distance in institutionalized elderly. It was included in this study 9 institutionalized elderly with age over 70 years old, both gender, evaluated by means of manometer, dynamometry and six minute walking test. The data were correlated by using the Pearson’s correlation test and the Spearman correlation test. From the evaluated elderly, it was four men and five women, with mean age: 78.8±7.3 years old, MIP: 75.7±33.6 cmH2O, MEP: 62.4±25.0 cmH2O, HGT: 20.4±6.2 kgf (right member) and 20.7±6.8 kgf (left member) and the distance on six minute walking test: 238.5±99.0 meters. There was correlation between expiratory strength and hand grip of both members with the distance on the six minute walking test. It is possible to conclude that there are correlation between expiratory muscle strength with the hand grip test and the functional capacity in institucionalized elderly.

The ankle sprains represent the most common injuries in sports and basketball. In this sense, the use of ankle bracing and strength capacity analysis of the ankle evertor and invertor muscles, have been suggested as preventive measures and important tools for identifying risk factors associated with ankle sprains. However, questions still persist as to effect of the use ankle bracing on biomechanical variables related to the stability of the ankle. For this reason, this study aims to analyze the effect of the use of ankle bracing on peak torque (PT) of ankle evertor and invertor muscles and on eccentric evertor/concentric invertor torque ratio (EVEECC/INVCON), during the basketball match-play simulation. Ten healthy college basketball players, without mechanics or functional ankle instability performed a laboratory-based protocol representative of work rates observed during basketball match-play, in two different situations, with and without use of ankle bracing. The test was composed of a succession of intermittent physical effort equally distributed in four periods of 10 minutes each, considering the mechanical and physiological demands of a basketball match-play. Prior to the start of the trial (Evaluation 1) and after 2° (Evaluation 2) and 4° (Evaluation 3) periods, the subjects performed five maximal isokinetic concentric and eccentric contractions of ankle invertor and evertor muscles, separated by two minutes rest, at 60 °/s and 120 °/s. After testing for normality of data distribution with the Shapiro-Wilk test, was used the ANOVA repeated measures for two factors and post-hoc Bonferroni test for comparison of variables between assessments. Was adopted p < 0.05. There was no significant difference for PT and EVEECC/INVCON torque ratio between assessments. The Post-Activation Potentiation (PAP) offers a proposal to optimize the production of strength and muscular power when performing exercises near maximum to actions previously assessed . The present study aims to show the activation process of postactivation potentiation (PAP) through vertical and plyometric jumps, and explain the user function of these movements. The ratio of post-activation potentiation resulting from plyometric and vertical jumps and explosive strength in the lower limbs aims to improve the potency and maximal strength, proven through studies and protocols detailed here. The results of this research come can be applied both for athletes and for individuals with experience in strength training and jumps (sports like volleyball, basketball and handball). The study was conducted through a literature review, conducted in scientific journals indexed in major databases (PubMed, ISI-Web of Science, SCIELO), books and academic papers (theses and dissertations)

Indoor soccer is a modality of sport similar to football, which is accompanying an increasing of the number of participants. With the growth of this sport, increased as well the number of injuries, which has been requiring greater attention and care from the health professionals. AIMS: To investigate the functional balance before and after an indoor soccer game and analyze the maximum force before and after the game, in order to verify if there is a great loss of muscle strength of knee flexors and extensors during the game. METHODS: The study included seven amateur soccer players. The isokinetic evaluation was made using the Biodex 3 isokinetic dynamometer at velocities of 60°/s and 180°/s with five repetitions at each velocity for each leg. Further, the study analyzed the peak torque of each leg at each speed of the extensor muscles and flexor concentric and eccentric. RESULTS: Compared to the peak torque before and after the game, there were no significant differences. At 60°/s in the non-dominant leg, peak torque decreased after the game of the extensor concentric and eccentric. In the dominant leg there was a decrease of peak torque in eccentric flexion at 60°/s and concentric flexion to 180°/s. Comparing the peak torque between dominance, there was any significant differences in speed. However, in eccentric flexion at 60°/s before the match there was a significant difference. The peak torque of the dominant leg showed better results than the non-dominant leg. Regarding the functional balance there was no statistically significant differences between the muscles involved. CONCLUSION: From the results achieved, it is possible to conclude that the peak torque of flexor eccentric decreases depending on the length of the exercise. This muscle is stronger in the dominant leg, comparing to the non-dominant leg

Among the numerous possibilities of physical exercise, it has been recommended that stretching routines should be incorporated into training programs focused on the elderly population, and that these routines should be preferentially performed on the same strength or aerobic training session. However, studies have shown that muscle strength production can be acutely impaired if it is preceded by static stretching exercises (AE). Although there seems to be a relationship between the number of stretched muscles and strength response, no studies were found examining such relationship in the same study, simultaneously. Thus, the objective of this study is to analyze the acute effect of stretching of different muscle groups on strength performance in older women. Nineteen physically active older women participated in the study (67.8 ± 5.3 years, 68.9 ± 12.4 kg, 157.2 ± 6.4 cm)-usar ponto final em inglês e não vírgula. The participants visited the lab for six consecutive days, three of which were intended to familiarization. Over the next three days, all the participants performed the experimental conditions: control; quadriceps stretching alone and complete stretching, involving the major extensors muscle groups of knees and hips. Both the two stretching conditions were realized with three series of 30s (total volume of 90 seconds for each exercise). All experimental conditions was be performed with an interval of at least 24 hours and order of execution was be randomized. The force transducer was connected to a leg press apparatus, where the isometric force time curve and electromyographic activity of the vastus medial and vastus lateralis were recorded. Measurements were registered immediately after each experimental condition, during five seconds. Several methods are used towards delayed onset muscle soreness appraisal. This study's goal was to investigate, amongst three commonly adopted methods, which one would be the most effective (the one that shows higher values) in the quantification of this phenomenon. 10 male subjects, of age 22.8 ± 3.1 years old, weight 80 ± 12.4 kg, height 174 ± 0.07 cm, without recent experience with strength training (lower limbs) and/or running took place in this study. All subjects carried out a muscle damage induction protocol, which consisted of 30 minute downhill running (-16% or -9.09º) at 80% speed compared to their maximum oxygen consumption. Muscle damage determinants such as isometric peak torque, knee joint range of motion and circumference of the medial portion of the thight were measured before, during, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours after downhill running. The subjective pain perception was measured simultaneously with the other determinants through three different tests: sitting on and getting up of a chair; climbing and descending from a 45cm step; and self thigh palpation. After going through all subjective pain perception tests, the subjects filled out a visual analog scale with their perception of pain. Muscle damage changes over time were compared through variance analysis (ANOVA) one way for repeated measures. Subjective pain perception values obtained in all three different tests were compared through two way ANOVAs for repeated numbers. The significance level adopted in this study was z ≤ 0.05. The results showed that the step test was the on which better evaluated the delayed onset muscle soreness. No significant differences were found through the ADM and CIR recovery markers. Downhil running determined reduced of PTI (~22.4%).
