YouTubers as satirists: humour and remix in online video

This article aims to discuss the role humour plays in politics, particularly in a media environment overflowing with user-generated video. We start with a genealogy of political satire, from classical to Internet times, followed by a general description of “the Downfall meme,” a series of videos on YouTube featuring footage from the film Der Untergang and nonsensical subtitles. Amid video-games, celebrities, and the Internet itself, politicians and politics are the target of such twenty-first century caricatures. By analysing these videos we hope to elucidate how the manipulation of images is embedded in everyday practices and may be of political consequence, namely by deflating politicians' constructed media image. The realm of image, at the centre of the Internet's technological culture, is connected with decisive aspects of today's social structure of knowledge and play. It is timely to understand which part of “playing” is in fact an expressive practice with political significance.

The wedding of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles: royal mediation and press mediatization

Bearing in mind the relationship between discourse and society at large, this article addresses the way the British monarchy represented Charles’s second marriage and the way the media constructed their accounts in the period from 10 February (announcement) until 9 April 2005 (wedding) in relation to wider issues such as power relations, newspaper economic structures and popular culture. Particular attention is paid to the multifunctional features of discourse (i.e. its ideational, interpersonal and textual functions), which requires a contextualized reading of a dual process of mediation: on the one hand, the staging of the ceremony by St. James’s Palace and its strategy for attaining monologic closure and, on the other hand, discursive representations by the British press open to a polyphony of voices and discursive frames

Gás sulfídrico nas redes de águas residuais

Os colaboradores que realizam a sua atividade profissional, no setor das águas residuais, reconhecem que a sua atividade é perigosa. Esse conhecimento, foi adquirido pela experiência obtida ao longo dos anos, pelas várias formações e pelas notícias de acidentes, muitas vezes mortais, que têm acontecido na atividade. Muita das vezes, os colaboradores têm dificuldade em aceitar o risco, porque na realidade não existe um histórico conhecido do que se passa no interior das redes de drenagem de águas residuais e consideram que o risco é apenas teórico. Os portugueses são um Povo muito ligado à Cultura Popular,e são os ditados populares que melhor sintetiza as ideias expressas pelos trabalhador português “Ver para Crer, Como São Tomé” (SOUSA, Marcelo Rebelo de, Os Evangelhos de 2001, Lisboa, Bertrand Editora, 2001]. O objetivo principal com este trabalho, foi evidenciar que existem gases no interior das caixas de visita, mas principalmente, demostrar que seu aparecimento e respetiva concentração, é variável e que ocorre sem aviso prévio! Tornando assim, os trabalhos no interior das caixas de visita e das redes de drenagem de águas residuais domesticas, locais perigosos para quem opera no seu interior, sem a correta utilização dos equipamentos de proteção individual, (Epis e Epc). Sendo necessário, reforçar, a constante informação e formação para a utilização dos equipamentos de proteção individual e coletiva. Com o presente estágio, pretendeu-se iniciar um registo histórico de medições nas redes de drenagem de águas residuais domésticas. Com o resultado das medições que serão obtidas, pretende-se uma “Radiografia Fotográfica” ao interior das caixas de visitas das redes de drenagem de águas residuais. Com os resultados deste estudo, pretende-se contribuir de forma clara e objetiva, para os perigos iminentes que existem efetivamente, no interior das redes de saneamento, com a presença de altas concentrações de gás sulfídrico, nocivo para a vida humana!

A Cidade do Trabalho: usos do património industrial (S. João da Madeira)

S. João da Madeira é uma localidade que desde cedo construiu os seus discursos em torno da identidade local sob o epíteto de Cidade do Trabalho. Mais recentemente, desde a última década do século XX, a cidade começou a olhar para a sua dimensão industrial do ponto de vista do seu cunho patrimonial, dentro do quadro emergente das políticas culturais e de identidade, no qual as identidades particulares – como à escala local – se querem afirmar no plano global. Partindo de uma primeira análise dos processos contemporâneos de patrimonialização do industrial no contexto de S. João da Madeira, concretizados pela via dos museus e do turismo, num trabalho de projeto que se apresenta como fase de investigação preliminar de um futuro trabalho de doutoramento, questiona-se como a antropologia poderá pensar o conceito de cultura popular fora dos contextos normalmente a estes atribuídos e como, consequentemente, poderá problematizar as fronteiras daquilo que poderá ser considerado ou não Património Cultural Imaterial (PCI), categoria com a qual a disciplina está historicamente comprometida.

Southern Modernisms. Critical Stances through Regional Appropriations. Conference proceedings

The hegemonic definition of Modernism has been subjected to an intense critical revision process that began several decades ago. This process has contributed to the significant broadening of the modernist canon by challenging its primal essentialist assumptions and formalist interpretations in the fields of both the visual arts and architecture. This conference aims to further expand this revision, as it seeks to discuss the notion of “Southern Modernisms” by considering the hypothesis that regional appropriations, both in Southern Europe and the Southern hemisphere, entailed important critical stances that have remained unseen or poorly explored by art and architectural historians. In association with the Southern Modernisms research project (FCT – EXPL/CPC-HAT/0191/2013), we want to consider the entrenchment of southern modernisms in popular culture (folk art and vernacular architecture) as anticipating some of the premises of what would later become known as critical regionalism. It is therefore our purpose to explore a research path that runs parallel to key claims on modernism’s intertwinement with bourgeois society and mass culture, by questioning the idea that an aesthetically significant regionalism – one that resists to the colonization of international styles and is supported by critical awareness – occurred only in the field of architecture, and can only be represented as a postmodernist turn. Southern modernisms from A to Z and back again

The book now being published results from a research project entitled Southern Modernisms that ran from March 2014 to May 2015 with FCT funding. The aim of the project was to explore the possibility of constructing a more inclusive, plural notion of modernism through the revision of Modernism’s prevailing definition – its stylistic focus, its formalist and anti-representative bias, as well as its autonomic assumptions, or, as far as architecture is concerned, its functionalist credo. This critical undertaking was grounded on the hypothesis that southern European modernisms featured a strong entrenchment in popular culture (folk art and vernacular architecture), and that this characteristic could be understood as anticipating some of the premises of, what would later become known as, critical regionalismo. Lexicultura na Língua Chinesa e na Lexicografia Bilingue de Chinês-Português

No contexto de internacionalização de hoje, acompanhando os contactos cada vez mais intensos entre o mundo chinês e o mundo lusófono, é exigida a maior atenção à questão da lexicultura na comunicação interlingual e intercultural, pois o que preocupa as partes envolvidas não é apenas descodificar os signos meramente linguísticos, mas também perceber a cultura que a língua, nomeadamente as unidades lexicais transportam, visando um comportamento culturalmente correto e adequado nessa comunicação. Partindo desta preocupação, este trabalho tenta, através da abordagem e análise da língua, da escrita e do léxico chineses, comprovar que o chinês, devido às suas peculiaridades inexistentes em outras línguas do mundo, constitui o vivo exemplo que exemplifica e alarga o conceito de lexicultura, pois a própria língua, sobretudo a sua escrita e as suas unidades lexicais, além de refletirem a cultura popular e partilhada, também contam verdadeiras histórias da Humanidade e da China. Baseando-se nesta abordagem e análise, a tese apresenta um novo modelo de dicionário cultural chinês-português, com propostas concretas de seleção de vedetas para a sua macroestrutura e de definição de vedetas na sua microestrutura, ao serviço da comunicação entre os dois mundos em questão.

La figura di Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) in Tajna Nikole Tesle (1980)

Nikola Tesla è considerato, dai divulgatori scientifici che di lui si occupano, una figura chiave nella storia della scienza moderna e contemporanea, per l’importanza che hanno avuto le sue ricerche nello sviluppo di tecnologie del XX e XXI secolo. La sua attuale scarsa fama nel piano accademico contrasta con un’abbondante presenza di un Nikola Tesla come personaggio di finzione nelle arti popolari. Questa ricezione ambigua di Tesla potrebbe essere di fatto relazionata con il carattere utopico e visionario delle sue speranze nella scienza come mezzo di conoscenza per il miglioramento della società umana. Questo breve saggio si propone di analizzare come venga presentato il personaggio di Nikola Tesla nel lungometraggio jugoslavo Tajna Nikole Tesle, contribuendo così alla comprensione di come la narrativa di finzione possa sfruttare l’immagine di uno scienziato relativamente agli interessi politici legati a specifici contesti socio-storici.

Antibacterial and antifungal activity of extracts and exudates of the Amazonian medicinal tree Himatanthus articulatus (Vahl) Woodson (common name: sucuba)

Himatanthus articulatus (Vahl) Woodson is a tree found in the northern Amazon savannahs (common name: sucuba) that is used in local Amerindian medicine. Leaf, bark and branch wood methanol extracts, sequentially obtained hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts and latex were evaluated for antifungal and antibacterial activities against American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) and local clinical strains using the disc diffusion method. Methanol extracts and latex inhibited Candida albicans, leaf methanol extracts inhibited Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis and bark methanol extracts inhibited B. subtilis. Active extracts inhibited the ATCC and clinical strains. Polar antifungal and antibacterial principles in latex and extracts are thought to be responsible for the inhibition.

Manufacturing and characterization of a recombinant adeno-associated virus type 8 reference standard material.

Gene therapy approaches using recombinant adeno-associated virus serotype 2 (rAAV2) and serotype 8 (rAAV8) have achieved significant clinical benefits. The generation of rAAV Reference Standard Materials (RSM) is key to providing points of reference for particle titer, vector genome titer, and infectious titer for gene transfer vectors. Following the example of the rAAV2RSM, here we have generated and characterized a novel RSM based on rAAV serotype 8. The rAAV8RSM was produced using transient transfection, and the purification was based on density gradient ultracentrifugation. The rAAV8RSM was distributed for characterization along with standard assay protocols to 16 laboratories worldwide. Mean titers and 95% confidence intervals were determined for capsid particles (mean, 5.50×10(11) pt/ml; CI, 4.26×10(11) to 6.75×10(11) pt/ml), vector genomes (mean, 5.75×10(11) vg/ml; CI, 3.05×10(11) to 1.09×10(12) vg/ml), and infectious units (mean, 1.26×10(9) IU/ml; CI, 6.46×10(8) to 2.51×10(9) IU/ml). Notably, there was a significant degree of variation between institutions for each assay despite the relatively tight correlation of assay results within an institution. This outcome emphasizes the need to use RSMs to calibrate the titers of rAAV vectors in preclinical and clinical studies at a time when the field is maturing rapidly. The rAAV8RSM has been deposited at the American Type Culture Collection (VR-1816) and is available to the scientific community.

Hacer castells, construir nación: castells, modelo festivo y catalanismo

Este trabajo propone un análisis del proceso del catalanismo, los modelos festivos y los castells para interpretar el modo en que esta relación es histórica y ha pasado por diferentes etapas. Si bien el catalanismo se había aliado con las sardanas hasta los años cincuenta, lo que se ha denominado el modelo festivo de la Catalunya Vella, a partir de este momento y con el inicio de la modernidad castellera, las alianzas se afianzan con los castells, el modelo festivo de la Catalunya Nova. Esto se produce porque los castells pueden hacer frente a los retos de la nueva realidad española y del nuevo nacionalismo que guiará el proceso de construcción de la Cataluña en que vivimos actualmente

Broadcast Yourself! Internet and playful media practices

In this paper we want to present a work- in-progress research about video self production on the Internet that is part of a broader research project which explores the ways current media practices convey a 'playful' relationship with digital technologies in popular culture.

Infancy Gospels. Stories and Identities

Even though the canonical Jesus' infancy stories have always provoked great interest in popular culture and in the arts, they have been neglected in research during the last decades due to the relatively late date of their redaction. Since the monograph by Raymond Brown, The Birth of the Messiah , the researchers working on this topic have not attempted to consider its historical impact. In this volume, an international team of scholars proposes firstly a reconsideration of the historical background of these stories in terms of early Jewish and Christian identity quests. Secondly, they deal with early Christian questions on Jesus' infancy and childhood through canonical and apocryphal Gospels including information from Patristic and documentary literature. On the theological level, this volume illustrates the impact that these apocryphal texts, recognized as "useful for the soul" (a phrase coined by François Bovon), have had on the Christian faith.
